Thanks for the video. I am curious about the top row. It looked like the panels extended over the ridge. I wonder if the top lip would grab high winds. All other advice seems to make sense. Thanks for your response.

Brent Johnson Ditto. I’ve never seen and install that extended the crest of the roof. Terrible idea.

Depends on where you live, but most places if you solidly install it to the roof truss it won't be a problem. The advantage is that you might get an extra row of panels on the roof AND... it keeps most of the leaves and rain from getting under the panels, so if you have a leak it will be small.

On my house in Montana... the same design lasted for over 20 years before I had to replace it.

Thanks. You have boosted my confidence to do this myself.

How has this held up since it was installed? I'd be worried about the wood expansion/contraction eventually leading to leaks or does the sealant expand enough to be ok? I was trying to figure out the best DIY approach myself as it's very hard to find solar stuff here in Canada, but ended up finding a site but the mounts are like $27 each. Ended up just biting the bullet and buying them. Not sure yet what I'll use for racking, the critical thing is how it's mounted on the roof as you don't want leaks.

Whatever you do, be sure to leave room for expansion between the panels! Don't tighten the connectors so much that the panels can't move. I like that he uses a clamping mount instead of drilling into the panel. The panel temperature can be anywhere from -30F at night to +150F (or more), and this causes contraction and expansion both length and width of the panel.

They don’t expand that much it’s wood

i got quoted $900 shipped for 4 rails for a small 8 panel system using ironridge rails with all the extra parts and flashings too. Sounds like a rip off, so I'm very thankful for these two videos Total Solar. I think I can do it for less than half that price with generic metal rails. I'll let you know how it goes. You hint at a 3rd video, discussing combiner box and inverter hook up, but I can't find it.

What is your spacing for the Supports from Roof to Rail. I am getting anywhere from 2' to 4' all over the internet. Some people using 2' spacing, some people using 4' spacing. I want the rail to be secure ... but do not want overkill so I do not drill to many holes in my roof.

The combination of galvanized steel of the angle bracket and the aluminum of the panel could eventually lead to galvanic corrosion of the aluminum. Did you notice any corrosion on your 20 year old system? (It is more likely to be a problem in wet, humid environments than Wyoming, especially near the ocean, where you get salt mist.)

I'm intend to install here in Florida Panhandle, so pretty humid. Do You recommend any grease or stuff like that to avoid corrosion? Thank for any advice

Problem with the bolts -> ground. If one of your wires goes bare ... the entire system is energized to ground making a nice hefty shock ... #UseCertifiedTechnicians
