@@NormanMcGregor I have perfect roof orientation to do this, but it's so much work and additional copper (as it turns out) for my solar well pump application. Thanks for the reply!
The company I bought them from was a Canadian company in Burnaby BC but they closed in the 2008 economic crash. To figure out how many panels you need along with the other equipment you need, you first need to know what loads you want to run and how long they need to run. From there you can figure out what you need.
+1952Jeep When you are ready, there are products to make it easier Plus solar is dropping in $$ and Obama is going to introduce an incentive for you to install! :)
Thanks for sharing. For everyone's benefit - one want to use solid dummy pieces of metal in the edge of last row of panels for S5 holder clip (and those should be of the same size as your panels) to have them secured (panel from one side, similar size piece of metal from another side). Otherwise the holder can slide off the panel at some point. It is especially important for the bottom row. Just take a look into S5 guide. I am also considering S5 products for my project now.
Where can you get these and what do they cost? My roof isn't standing seam it is the overlap rolled type whatever it is called. I don't think these would be open enough to go over the roll type. Do you know if they are made to fit my type metal roof? Thanks for the video.
The company is S-5 and you can get them online at s-5.com/how-to-buy/ They make many different types of clamps for all kinds of metal roofs. I think they are around $5 each here in Canada but check out their website for the current prices.
I'm about to install some on my place in calgary! But my metal roof dont have that thick of an edge. It's like maybe 3 quarters of an inch more rounded
@Norman McGregor thank you. I'm actually installing them this weekend so. Won't be nothing fancy. Just use what I have and maybe fasten 2x4s across lol
@@robertgiroux3658 The nice thing about the s-5 clamps is you don't get holes in your roof. Some people do screw 2x4's to their roof and use a good sealant which will need to be replaced every so often.
I showed them in the video. They are L16 390amphour AGM batteries. Still using them today and they are still delivering top performance. Plus I used them for 5 years previous before I moved here.
Here in Canada, e get lots of snow and I've had no issues in over 10 years with them. S5 also uses these for their snow guards. Don't think snow load is a problem as long as your roof is rated for the load.

www.s-5.com be sure you order the correct clamps for your metal roof profile. You also need their PV kit for each clamp. Excellent Product! Used them to mount the wind supports for my wood stove chimney too!
In most roof mounted applications with rails there are grounding wires that run along the rails. Did you have to add any type of grounding wire to your application to pass an electrical inspection?
The S5 Clamps are in their 3rd year here on Haida Gwaii where we get constant very high winds in Winter with no problems holding at all. I also used them for 5 years in Calgary, Alberta, which has similar extreme weather conditions to you, and never had a problem and the setscrews have never backed off.
I would recommend looking for a local supplier as panels have gotten so inexpensive. You may save a few $$ on price shopping around the country but will more than likely end up spending more because of shipping charges.
thanks I was wondering how to do that, I have a metal roof on mine too, I'm planning on using a cattle gate and attaching it to a telephone pole that remains and then put a wheel on one end of it and let it follow the Sun
I don't think so as the S-5 clamps are designed to attach to a standing rib seam. Check with S-5 though they may have a solution for you. Their website is www.s-5.com .
Its a standing seam type. Most metal roof suppliers can supply this type of product but it is a bit more pricey than regular metal roofing. The advantage of this product is that there are NO Screw holes exposed to the environment and rain which causes leaks.
just wondering I'm planning on building my home just about that size how much did the metal roof cost you? I'm trying to decided if I should go shingle or standing seam
My metal roof cost $1.44/foot. Here it was actually less expensive than regular shingles but on the mainland shingles are usually less expensive. The main advantages for me are, I can add solar panels without putting holes in the roof and the roof will last more than 50 years without needing any repairs. Shingles constantly need repairs and only last 10 - 15 years.
