Everyone: "He was a god. He had the powers of gods, his children were pretty much what youd expect from god's children. He was a furtility god" Maisters: "HE WAS A HUNTER OR A KING"
He's very similar to Pan. There's also a Gaelic/Irish myth that shows depictions of THE GREEN MAN. Same beard, flowers, and women!! I have one hanging in my garden. Y'all r so great!!🐺🐲💟🌹🐙😍❄🌞🌠🔥🐊💗
The name of The Reach might refer to the extent of the reach of Garth's Green Hand. It seems many of the Gods and heroes and forms of resurrection are strongly tied to regions of land (and sea).
9:55 "it does mention the possibility of Garth being a darker deity" Offering up your own daughters to get "deflowered" (in big quotation marks) is already plenty dark imho
we appreciate the concern of our favorite gamer...we were a little under the weather and wanted to wait til our voices sounded better to record the audio so people wouldn't feel like they were getting a cold from listening to us
lol ill commit one of my sons, armor up and ride out with you, if my eight year old daughter gives her consent. House Jones is really really small but each of us fights with the strength of several gamers with high XP
Now for my GOT related comment. I'm not saying there's a 100% correlation here, but the passage quoted about "young girls flowered at his smile" reminded me of Melisandre bleeding from her loins at the sight of Bloodraven in her flames. Seeing as the old powers are waking, a lot of them through Bran w/Bloodraven's assistance... I have to wonder if that situation w/Mel is an example.
Ashley of Naath a good possibility for the first men renouncing their gods in favor of the children's is that they saw Garth as an aspect of the gods worshipped by the children and the common ground made them feel comfortable. They are both gods based off nature that require sacrifice.
I like the idea of the God of fertility and agriculture also being the patron God of mankind, seeing as humans are one of the few animals that have a form of agriculture Edit: thanks for the like!
Chad Summerchild damn Chad, this is the second video I've seen you on today, lol, you must be reeeeealy pumped for the high priced fan-fi..i mean the awesomely perfect show, huh
woa woa woa, i have to pause at the 7:00, men offered up their virgin daughters to this king, he begot many children, who in turn had lots of children, in fact a strong portion of they people we have met are descended from this one many. he lived so long ago most of his life is told as legend so we dont really know much about him, he traveled the land spilling over his deeds upon the ground, he changed every society he visited, they either died or followed him and his cause, he was an inclusive man but a king is still a king therefore must punish, noble blood is held in high regard, bastards are raised as sons, equal be separate., acknowledging merit, turned nomadic peoples into states with stationary and constant occupation............. who did i just describe?
you guys outdid yourselves again this is epic and so enlightening. i love a lot of your videos the Machiavelli of westeros is genius, your catlyn sucks videos are strong arguments and entertaining as hell . but these old power awakening series are truly epic, ive watched them all so far and even had trouble following where you intended to go with them because they seemed to rather jump around but todays video ties them all in and its truly awesome. thank you for the upload
we are a little guilty of doing them in the order that most interested us instead of putting this one out there to set up the baseline for where we were going...we were talking about it last night and I think I might put this one 1st in the playlist, or at the very least before the Sword of the Morning video
Def gotta take everything from TWOIAF with at least a grain or two of salt it's a biased work, against magic and I have a snaking suspicion the Targaryens as well. Best way for Citadel to kill the talk of magic is make previous dragonriding kings look like dump while simultaneously bolstering the Baratheon reign.
It's interesting, that all of the descendents of Garth Greenhand founded houses in the Reach...except for Brandon the Bloody Blade :) Your videos are the best! :D
Come on we all know Garth was and alien. 'Greenhand' or little green man. I think I can explain this whole thing. Marklar, these marklars want to change your marklar. They don't want Marklar or any of these marklars to live here because it's bad for their marklar. They use Marklar to try and force marklars to believe they're marklar. If you let them stay here, they will build marklars and marklars. They will take all your marklars and replace them with Marklar. These marklar have no good marklar to live on Marklar, so they must come here to Marklar. Please, let these marklars stay where they can grow and prosper without any marklars, marklars, eh or marklars.
he was one of the first legendary characters from history that we took a serious interest in...we thought he was a God back when we did our king's blood video but hadn't done all the research we have now and weren't sure enough to go for it in that video so we felt like we needed to revisit it
sorry...when we are making them we never know how long they're going to be until they're done, or when we realize that we don't have time to do a topic justice, we have to end with cliffhangers because there is no sense in partially explaining something in a video when its clear that we would need a whole video to explain what we're thinking
I just wish you had a thousand more videos😊 I've watched most of yours at least 3 times😍 The Order of the Green Hand is my favorite GOT channel. Thank you again for your hard work and entertaining theories!
Hi there. Watched your vids. Love them😍. It gives more clarity to the caracters. Thank you. Loved the tulip fields from Holland Blessings🙏🏻✨ and ❤️ from Holland🌷
I absolutely LOVE your videos and look forward to each one. This is the first I've seen of Garth Greenhand. Your videos and views are different than most (esp. the "Why Catelyn Sucks" series - because most almost glorify her) and that's what makes each video so interesting. Keep up the amazing work :)
We independently research everything and have paid very little attention to other people's theories since the end of our first read a few years ago...at that point, we were unsatisfied with the answers other people had provided to questions we had, and having no idea when TWOW was coming, and we lack the patience to wait, so we decided to try to figure it all out ourselves
Just listened to this again, and had a thought... Does Garth Greenhand's fertility, passed down through his children, give the real reason behind the Rite of the First Night held to even today by the Lords of First Men ancestry in the North?
I'm really enjoying your videos & your channel. I'm a huge mythology/folklore nerd & unfortunately haven't read the GOTs novels but enjoy the show. I know I miss much of subtext & rich fantasy elements of the books. Your videos fill in those blanks for me. And it's wonderful to know someone else saw similar themes of light/dark & chaos/balance of Egyptian mythology being so prevalent. You guys are doing a wonderful job♡
we first caught the mythology stuff when we started researching Bloodraven and weirwoods...at that point we had just started piecing the religions together and were convinced they were vitally important to figuring out what the heck is going on...we were about 90% sure Garth was a god when we made our king's blood video but couldn't place what the significance of it was until we got into the mythology aspects of the story
Unrelated to this specific topic of Garth but sometimes i worry that, after all this time, with all these awesome theories and legends within ASOIAF we either will never get to know 90% of it or if do, the actual events and stories will be nowhere as good as the theories. On a brighter note, your videos are fucking brilliant!
I never gave two shits about Garth Greenhand(even after awoiaf) but after watching this video, I can't fucking wait till next week! lol nice work guys, as usual
We know of some of the gods the First Men worshipped before taking the children's gods. In the story of Durran Godsgrief there was the god of the sea and the goddess of the wind. On the Three Sisters there was the Lord of the Skies and the Lady of the Waves.
That pact... was just an agreement to worship the old gods in front of the Weirwoods.... NOT the weirwoods themselves... and NOT the gods of the children of the forest (unless the children also were worshipping the old gods). It wasn't long before things were conflated and the first men began to take up sacrificing to the weirwoods and regarding them as some sort of representation of the old gods themselves. Seriously, if it's between the god of the living and the god of the death... it's hard for me to think that ALL the children are actually worshipping the god of death. I mean... they are living creatures, after all. I think it's more like achieving a balance between chaos and order... but like anything, polarization happens and pits people against each other. Tastes great/Less filling... lol. Half Full/Half Empty... Something has caused the natural order to be WAY out of balance... and that must be due to the effects of the "magic" in GRRM's universe.
+Delia Hernandez we were a little sick here at the wolfs den and it delayed us a bit because we couldn't record. But don't worry we're not going anywhere
I had to take a hiatus from TH-cam but I have been tempted back. Nicely done video, as usual. Maybe the fertility of Garth is related to the idea of the first night, and the chance of spreading the seed, which is apparently strong! I also find the polygamous marriages interesting and I think there might be more of that which was practiced by the first men before the Andals and the faith put the kibosh to it, as well as blood sacrifice! Looking forward to more more video's from you guys!
I've watched this again after re-watching the series. I know you guys dive more into the books than the show. but I think the showrunners pay homage to what Martin was wanting to do or is going to do. Like what I asked about with Mance & the sword of the morning in the show. There looks & what they said. "I wish you good fortune in the wars to come" It's like he new the great war was coming. In the first season it was said many times about Jon Arynes last words were "The seed is strong"... If the Green Hand literally was the ancestor too all the houses that have been fighting would be so ironic. Including Targaryens... This is the Adam & Eve with a lot more Eves of The Song of Ice and Fire! Also Lady Crane in season 6 another shout out nice! Oh yeah I forget... How many bastards did Robert have 20 something? How many great houses are there exactly?
thank for the upload I always find you'll videos and channel has the most interesting theory/ideas makes me wonder if you'll have some inside information.
such high quality research and presentation. I put you on the same level as alt shift x, who I consider the best. the insight you bring from the books to someone like me who only watches the show (so far), is invaluable. and you convince me of everything...except Ned being Jon's father; I have my own crazy theory for that.
Yesssss! I really like this "The Old Powers are Waking," series! Could you do a video about the process of researching a topic that goes into making your vids?? Maybe it would be out of place but you guys are so thorough. And I wonder how you get all this info together.
we basically research the particular topic in the text, then when we think we stumbled onto something good, we do background research on it...this particular video is almost exclusively from TWOIAF...it also helps to have the iBooks because they have search functions and author's annotations...then we bounced the ideas back and forth until we come up with something that makes sense and script it and record it
You guys are the best and the worst. I LOVE all your videos, so enlightening and by far the best content out there. But how are you going to leave us with a cliffhanger like that????? Also I commented before that Mel's actress said in an interview that The showrunners told her that Mel is over 200 years old which is too old to be Shiera Seastar. Was wondering if you had a chance to look into that further into that?
Oakenshield! Another name taken from Tolkien character! Yay! And I only noticed on what must be my tenth watching of this video... Which just further proves that what you two do is amazing!
I am listening to this again and something just occurred to me. Is it possible that the Green Men on the Isle of Gods are the clergy of the First Men? I am assuming because their name is "green men" they are somehow connected to Garth the Greenhand.
George gets this from the legend of Osiris, the Inventory Stela from ancient Egypt shows how Osiris founded Egypt, and lives thousands of years. Yet he’s also a God.
The Order of the Green Hand thanks! speaking about anagrams i don't have any particular interest about this character but gendry also is a kind of anagram for reign with the addition of "d". what do you think?
you guys are full of info and i would really like to see a prediction video for TWOW by you guys...Don't worry, you got time to do it since winter is still a long time away...
Garth gives off a strong king Arthur vibe to me. especially given the world of ice and fire description of him being maybe based upon an old watchief or petty king of some kind. That's virtually the exact same archaeological explanation as king Arthur has in real life. a great king who reigned over all thr tribes, plus the map of westeros and esos is a very distorted great Britain and Ireland type of landmass. You have the Britons fighting off a Saxon invasion in Arthur and you have a first man invasion in got so it's many of the same details just shuffled around There's also a bit of the Greek God Dionysus in there. that may be worth looking into as well; including the greenman deity/legend from northern Europe. that matches the "darker god" the green man died and was reborn each year and served as a fertility symbol.
Garth is certainly one of the more interesting characters from the Age of Heroes. He always brings to mind childhood stories of Johnny Appleseed hahaha As always, thank you for the great video.
I have a lingering question for quite a while. If the particular book titled The World of Ice & Fire were written during the Lannister's peak power why it's called the world of ice and fire? the maester yandel or gildain would never thought such title will have so much impact in the wise timeline. That's why at first I thought the book were written after the event of the dream of spring, meaning the war for the dawn 2.0 already happen and won over. That's why these maesters name the book with such title. If it is written in the current timeline (maybe align with book 1-3) why they mention "ice and fire" in the title? what correlation they have with those elements? as if the people of the seven kingdoms will care or have knowledge about it, unlike us who are all fascinated by the novels, therefore familiar with those "ice and fire" thingy
somebody on here is a really big secret Order fan, lol, they always dislike the video within the first couple minutes, you didn't even have enough time to watch the whole video!! lol... as always, love getting my OOTGH fix haha
Can a god truly die? The Maesters are up to something in this story. They have their own agenda. Could Garth still be alive, but imprisoned and incapacitated someplace?
Sounds like Father Time, sleeping beneath the mountain. On the day he wakes the earth dies. But death is just the beginning as destruction is the start of rebirth, as the end of winter is the start of summer.
Writing a fan fiction (because why not), and I am going through lol these video because I want to get the ancient magicks and powers right. This is just quality stuff lol
Isn't the soil of the vale suppose to be the most fertile soil in Westeros but they just have far fewer lands than the reach? That's just what I'm recalling
I wonder where claim that House Dustin are descended from the first King of the First Men comes from then? It would probably be intertwined somewhere here.
They were the First king of the clan of the first men that settled in the North. Like Durran was the first king of the first men who settled in the Stormlands. This was during the age of heroes obviously. Which came to an end, an end that coincided with the beginning of the long night, making Bran the Builder (or one of his cousins) becoming the Last Hero, defeating his father (greatest warrior of the age of heroes, most hated rival/ murderer of the COTF) but due to the laws against kin slaying, he was unable of kill him at the Fist of the First Men. So, knowing his father would one day return, he built the Wall, and built Winterfell, naming it so, not because that’s where he defeated his father, but that’s where he anticipated he’ll be defeated in the future by the last of his line. He then decreed there must always be a Stark in Winterfell for this very same reason, and worked to take control of the North, thus usurping the authority of the Dustin’s, lesser men compared to him who were unable to do anything against the Others.
Everyone: "He was a god. He had the powers of gods, his children were pretty much what youd expect from god's children. He was a furtility god"
Maisters: "HE WAS A HUNTER OR A KING"
He's very similar to Pan. There's also a Gaelic/Irish myth that shows depictions of THE GREEN MAN. Same beard, flowers, and women!! I have one hanging in my garden. Y'all r so great!!🐺🐲💟🌹🐙😍❄🌞🌠🔥🐊💗

Offering up your own daughters to get "deflowered" (in big quotation marks) is already plenty dark imho
I was starting to worry about the Wolf's Den. Was going to call my banners and head that way soon..
we appreciate the concern of our favorite gamer...we were a little under the weather and wanted to wait til our voices sounded better to record the audio so people wouldn't feel like they were getting a cold from listening to us
lol ill commit one of my sons, armor up and ride out with you, if my eight year old daughter gives her consent. House Jones is really really small but each of us fights with the strength of several gamers with high XP
hahahahahha....I'll definitely keep that in mind Sir Jon of House Jones
Jon jones773 u from chicago?
originally from long beach, CA but yes, i am currently located in chi-raq
Garth demanded blood sacrifices? Like the Weirwood trees? Could it be that when he died he went into the first Weirwood Tree?
we have been trying to figure out where he went, but there is no information available

Edit: thanks for the like!
A man needs an endless "The Old Powers Are Waking" series. Be merciful, and never stop doing what you guys do!😊😊😊
hahah we won't! thanks so much
I prayed to the old gods and the new for a new video everyday since the last! Thanks so much. I am always looking forward to ur videos.
Thanks Zena!
Heavy with seed, spreading seed, seed that never runs out.
More like Garth Green Seed
I dont like sand. Its rough, course, irritating and it gets everywhere.
Chad Summerchild
damn Chad, this is the second video I've seen you on today, lol, you must be reeeeealy pumped for the high priced fan-fi..i mean the awesomely perfect show, huh
I fucking hate you, Chad
this guy!
Garth Greensac Sire!
woa woa woa, i have to pause at the 7:00, men offered up their virgin daughters to this king, he begot many children, who in turn had lots of children, in fact a strong portion of they people we have met are descended from this one many. he lived so long ago most of his life is told as legend so we dont really know much about him, he traveled the land spilling over his deeds upon the ground, he changed every society he visited, they either died or followed him and his cause, he was an inclusive man but a king is still a king therefore must punish, noble blood is held in high regard, bastards are raised as sons, equal be separate., acknowledging merit, turned nomadic peoples into states with stationary and constant occupation............. who did i just describe?
Answer:

Genghis Khan
that just made me think of khal drogo too. hmmm
I've read the books I've watched all the episodes, yet i embrace the ASOIAF school that is The Order of the Green Hand...cheers
Thanks! :D
you guys outdid yourselves again this is epic and so enlightening. i love a lot of your videos the Machiavelli of westeros is genius, your catlyn sucks videos are strong arguments and entertaining as hell . but these old power awakening series are truly epic, ive watched them all so far and even had trouble following where you intended to go with them because they seemed to rather jump around but todays video ties them all in and its truly awesome. thank you for the upload

Jon jones773 - yeah I'm still wondering what all this has to do with Khal Drogo. Love every second of it tho.
How many more old power episodes will you do i am really anxious for that ashara video
Yeahhh if you guys could stop making me whisper "Oh fuck yeah" under my breath at my work desk, that'd be great.
I'll see what I can do about that
OHHH! snap! I know I'm not the only one who says this when the video ends! BEST ASOIAF channel on youtube, sincere thanks, love QOT.🌹 🌹 🌹 👏 👏
Thank you QOT
Keep em coming, please.
You guys go more in depth than most ASOIAF channels. Love these. Thank you
Thanks Tehn! You're the best! :D
I feel bad for the little girls who got their first period from him smiling at them...
Def gotta take everything from TWOIAF with at least a grain or two of salt
it's a biased work, against magic and I have a snaking suspicion the Targaryens as well.

It's interesting, that all of the descendents of Garth Greenhand founded houses in the Reach...except for Brandon the Bloody Blade :)
Your videos are the best! :D
it is isn't it...thank you so much
Didn't know much about Garth other than some general info, really found this insightful. Can't wait for the next one!
+nick koch thank you Sir. Garth was one of the first legendary characters from history that really caught our eye

Filip Cordas I remember that episode, classic!
Been waiting for your return. I follow many other sites but yours is my favorite. Always the best GoT videos. Thanks for your time and effort.
Thank you so much for watching
I have got to say the content you two put out is remarkable and you deserve more recognition for sure
Thank you so much
Love your videos. I've always been intrigued by Garth Greenhand and the many ancestors that come from him.
he was one of the first legendary characters from history that we took a serious interest in...we thought he was a God back when we did our king's blood video but hadn't done all the research we have now and weren't sure enough to go for it in that video so we felt like we needed to revisit it

Why can't your videos be longer!!!Thanks for working so hard!

I can't get enough of your content!!
I'm so hyped for Bran The Builder!!!
Thanks! Us too!
I can’t help but draw a parallel between Garth Greenhand and the Dagda of Irish Mythology.
1:36 in and I'm on the edge of my seat. This is such a great channel!!!
thank you!
Hi there. Watched your vids. Love them😍. It gives more clarity to the caracters. Thank you.

absolutely brilliant video excited about the detailed breakdown that was amazing to add! can't wait for next one....
Thank you Lady Rhee
and from the loins of garth sprang forth the order of the green hand so ripe with information.
hahahhaa yes
Brandon of the Bloody blade + Rose of Red Lake = Ultimate power couple.
I absolutely LOVE your videos and look forward to each one. This is the first I've seen of Garth Greenhand. we thought about including that in the video...it does seem to make a lot of sense
Good video, guys. Always glad to see a new one.
Thank you
just wanted to say, you two have one of the best ASOIAF channels available, if not THE best
Thank you!!!

Just when things get really interesting, we are stranded in suspense! Yikes! May the fecundity of Garth Greenhand multiply your video output. :)
Lady Green Hand works at a school so she has summers off...Garth has blessed us with more free time to make videos
Great news! Can't wait for more videos. And what do we say to the God of School? Not today.
Great video as always. Keep up the good work guys :) Thank you for sharing the knowledge.
I can't wait! Thanks guys!
Psyched!! Thanks guys for your awesome efforts! 👍👍
thank you for watching
The seed is strong................. "where you think it is, it ain't " ~ ida Rolf
I don't know if this will get seen but I'll ask anyways. This video got me thinking, where did surnames come from in this world?
that is a very good question...it seems like the First Men surnames were somewhat descriptive, but as for the rest I have no idea
11:50 Did not expect to see Guild Wars 2 concept art!
thank for the upload I always find you'll videos and channel has the most interesting theory/ideas makes me wonder if you'll have some inside information.
I wish we had inside information...we definitely use every scrap of publicly available knowledge we can get our hands on though
can't wait until the next one! what a cliffhanger...
Thank you so much...we do what we can
Excellent video guys! The one I've been waiting for.
Thank you Ser!
1...Let's do this
I think I might have just figured out what your numbers mean
I love numbers
that is something I totally understand...that's why it was driving me crazy that I couldn't figure out what yours meant
such high quality research and presentation. I put you on the same level as alt shift x, who I consider the best. the insight you bring from the books to someone like me who only watches the show (so far), is invaluable. and you convince me of everything...except Ned being Jon's father; I have my own crazy theory for that.
Thank you !! We really appreciate it.
Yesssss! I really like this "The Old Powers are Waking," series! Could you do a video about the process of researching a topic that goes into making your vids?? Maybe it would be out of place but you guys are so thorough. And I wonder how you get all this info together.
we basically research the particular topic in the text, then when we think we stumbled onto something good, we do background research on it...this particular video is almost exclusively from TWOIAF...it also helps to have the iBooks because they have search functions and author's annotations...then we bounced the ideas back and forth until we come up with something that makes sense and script it and record it
very nice video, I also like some of the newer thumbnails you guys are working on! Your progress is good.
When you guys extend the metaphor about the "seed bag" bein Garths gnads I picture a dude rolling down the glen w his balls in a wheel barrow.
At 15:31 Rose of Red Lake.... She's beyond stunning!!
I know! I totally agree! I had to sort of make up what they all looked like, but I thought she was perfect. !:)
LETS DO THIS!
I am listening to this again and something just occurred to me. Is it possible that the Green Men on the Isle of Gods are the clergy of the First Men? I am assuming because their name is "green men" they are somehow connected to Garth the Greenhand.
Love your videos. Keep up the great work.
thank you...we will
Yessssssssss been waiting for this one
Hope it was worth the wait
As always. Thanks!
George gets this from the legend of Osiris, the Inventory Stela from ancient Egypt shows how Osiris founded Egypt, and lives thousands of years. Yet he’s also a God.
Get the champagne ready for 20k subscribers mark! Hope you pop a top, celebrate your great achievements! Love QOT.🌹 🌹 👏 👏 👏 👏
Thanks QOT! We will! I don't drink anymore, the Russian in me gets crazy when I have vodka! I will def have to do something to celebrate though. :D
yandel is a kind of anagram for lynda & elio.
good catch!
Another well-researched video!
P.S....fecund has its emphasis on the first syllable.
You have the Britons fighting off a Saxon invasion in Arthur and you have a first man invasion in got so it's many of the same details just shuffled around
There's also a bit of the Greek God Dionysus in there. that may be worth looking into as well; including the greenman deity/legend from northern Europe. that matches the "darker god" the green man died and was reborn each year and served as a fertility symbol.
Garth is certainly one of the more interesting characters from the Age of Heroes. He always brings to mind childhood stories of Johnny Appleseed hahaha As always, thank you for the great video.
so true! and thank you
This is by far one of my all time favorite ASOIAF videos. I listen to this one all the time. Great job Order of the Greenhand.
I can't wait for Sam to meet Arch Maester Gildane. Both of "George's characters" in one scene!
Thought provoking video as always guys, love you stuff! Are most of these stories in TWOIAF?
thank you so much...pretty much all the information about Garth that is available is in TWOIAF
Epic! Can't wait for the next part!
thanks!
somebody on here is a really big secret Order fan, lol, they always dislike the video within the first couple minutes, you didn't even have enough time to watch the whole video!! lol... as always, love getting my OOTGH fix haha
This one was to short lol. Another great video and cant wait til next week :)
sorry Collin! we will have more coming out more per week this summer
Interesting info 😲
Can a god truly die?
The Maesters are up to something in this story. They have their own agenda. Could Garth still be alive, but imprisoned and incapacitated someplace?
answer coming in Bran the Builder's video
Sounds like Father Time, sleeping beneath the mountain. On the day he wakes the earth dies. But death is just the beginning as destruction is the start of rebirth, as the end of winter is the start of summer.
Writing a fan fiction (because why not), and I am going through lol these video because I want to get the ancient magicks and powers right. This is just quality stuff lol
It sounds like Garth was a cross between Pan and Zeus.
Isn't the soil of the vale suppose to be the most fertile soil in Westeros but they just have far fewer lands than the reach? That's just what I'm recalling
been waiting for this :)........
Hope you enjoyed
so Garth walked around with a super soaker? XD
exactly
George taking so long since 2011 for the next book makes sense considering layers in his work.
Oh wow these videos are already over please do another the wars to come video soon :)
Your videos get me too hyped. Next best thing to reading the books.
aww huge compliment! thank you
which video do you discuss the gods of the old men versus the children? i missed that one
another great video!!!
thank you
