    Well... we know it took a while 😂, a lot longer than either of us expected, but with Cataclysm coming out shortly we gave ourselves a kick up the butt and got it done. As it happens just in time for Displate's MEGA Birthday sale. So if you'd like to support us maybe take a look using this link for up to 42% off any plates on the site; ours or anyone else's - it helps us a ton and you can get some cool artwork to hang up. displate.com/preachgaming?art=619e85e06e135

    Most memorable for me was the nerf to healing from WotLK -> Cata. Gone was the volatile, spammy healing, in was the slow, mana-intensive healing. Which undoubtedly had an impact in Heroic Dungeons with pugs.

    • @andromidius
      @andromidius 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      People either love or hate the change. Personally I liked it, healing became a dynamic resource management and encouraged communication. During wrath the healers rarely said a single thing - they just spammed heals non-stop.

    • @iyaramonk
      @iyaramonk 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Healers were the only ones I remember struggling with the new heroics. So in some sense the difficulty was a bit overblown. I did see a fair number of them quit though.

    • @samwise1790
      @samwise1790 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      From my recollection, healing was basically the major reason heroics were difficult. You could hold threat and had the damage, but your healer was struggling with mana or timing/throughput. It seemed be the limiting factor.
      I ran as a war tank in cata with a priest main I've known and played with since vanilla and who I thought was pretty good, and I just felt bad for him. You could hear his frustration with just running out of mana sometimes, or just barely not being able to keep me or others up in some fights. He enjoyed the challenge and generally making healing more complicated, but it seemed just poorly tuned or unfair many times in the way where you'd just have to say 'what was I supposed to do better there? when you were giving it all you had.
      The one-shot mechanics were there as well and people generally were not well practiced at 'dont stand in the colorful circle' after wrath, but that seemed like it would resolve on its own once players knew what was coming.

    • @thisismyyoutubecommentacco6302
      @thisismyyoutubecommentacco6302 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@samwise1790 Another big issue was tanks coming from WOTLK were used to just stacking HP since in ICC with Chill of the Throne mitigation was an afterthought and you just wanted the health to withstand any individual hit since healers were spamming.
      With Cataclysm, warrior and paladins especially really needed to stack mastery to up their block and get as much combat table coverage as possible. That's why one of the best early tanking trinkets was the Impetuous Query dungeon drop (blue item, on use boatload of mastery, 1 min cd) which would smooth out the damage spikes and allow healers to use their slower, less mana-intensive heals vs. their fast mana-intensive heals they had gotten used to spamming in the "wtf is mana" era of wotlk.

    • @samwise1790
      @samwise1790 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thisismyyoutubecommentacco6302 ah yeah thanks for reminding me. I MT'd as a DK in wrath up to the lich king and now youre bringing back memories of changing gear priority to mitigation/mastery, and farming for probably that trinket, though I cant for the life of me remember the name of any single item starting from cata, which was my last real try at any retail wow version.

    Early Cataclysm was, for me, peak WoW gameplay. The zones were awesome, the dungeons were well designed, classes played amazing. Most important of all Tier 11 and Firelands were some of my most enjoyable time raiding heroic 25 man. Bugs in T11 didn't really affect a more casual guild, and the difficulty of Firelands was spot on. It's a shame it all ended on the fat stinker that was Dragonsoul patch.

  • @melissasalt

    For me the biggest legacy of the Cataclysm was that the first instances of being an alliance raider was starting to flounder. I remember having issues with our roster as more slowly saw the horde outcome. By Wod even I had left but it started here in Cataclysm where the factions really started to tilt. Make no mistake I remember Cata very fondly it was also my first one outside of a private server when I finally had my own PC. I loved it, the world bosses were also a forgotten thing but my guild at that time actually organised for it keeping an eye out. I think when I look back nostalgia goggles do take over the people I knew but thats just how it goes. Cata wasn't all bad it had its highs and lows, but for me the highs really did out number the low. Also do you remember the solo firelands shaman trash farm? I sure do and what it did to the AH. LOL thanks peach for the trip down memory lane. Pandaria next I hope?

    @Tehstampede 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Cataclysm was a great demonstration of what happens when the devs try to force people to play the game the way THEY think it should be played, instead of how people enjoy playing the game.
    Edit: You're 100% right about transmog saving the game. One of the things that would make me want to log out right after getting into the game was looking at my character wearing a patchwork quilt most of the time. Back when I was really into WoW I would deliberately wear slightly worse gear if it looked better than the replacement.

    I'm currently playing cata classic. In a 25m heroic raiding guild, and I can honestly say that I'm having a blast with it.
    I think cataclysm always had a great expansion as a foundation. Which was botched originally. But the classic rerelease I'd say has been successful. A few minor bugs here and there, but most have been fixed by now.
    The dungeons were handled well I think. Post nerf dungeons, but even post nerf dungeons are still wipeable if mistakes are made. And we went into those dungeons with a different context/mindset. We had wrath classic with the heroic titan rune dungeons that were incredibly fun and could be difficult too. So most are used to communicating from that. Though I'd argue that the ease of wrath heroics comes a lot from doing those wrath heroics in ICC gear. People outgearing the heroics massively before cata during the ICC content drought.
    So I think those of us playing cata classic now are experiencing it the way it was intended. Those who left wrath classic after cata classic was announced don't know what they're missing. I assume a lot of 'em left because of cata's reputation (subs went down, therefore cata = bad) rather than for what cata actually is.

    Cataclysm has a special place in my heart because it's the one I started playing. I still remember in 2011 my friend inviting me to play and we both created orc warriors. Going through the valley of trials, I opened the map, zoomed out to Durotar, to Kalimdor, and finally to the world map thinking "I will die one day and I will never had explored all this world". I was so naive back then 😅but the first time you play you never forget, it's a mystical experience.

    Nostalgia has different effects on many based on their experience. WOTLK was my favorite time in WoW as I was part of a top 10 raiding guild on our server. Life was great then. 😎
    In Cata, the extra grinds just to get raid ready and early raids just destroying our previously top 10 raid guild. We fell apart in Cata and the guild disbanded in Cata.
    Cata for me is the lowest point in WoW’s history…. It destroyed my guild and my hardcore raiding experience. From that point on, I only stayed a casual player until I finally quit the game for good.
    I hope those who are excited for Cata Classic have a better experience. 🙇‍♂️

    Vasjir is probably one of the best zones Blizzard ever made. It was full of lore, it explored a part of Azeroth that we never got to see previously, it had a great story, I am really sad they didn't finish the Neptulon raid during the expansion (most likely due to negative backlash, something I don't understand even to this day). As for dungeons, early Cataclysm, precisely because of the difficulty, was the best dungeon experience I ever had in WoW, rivaled only by mythic seasons in Legion and partially in BfA (simply because I found all dungeons there to be amazing). The revamped SFK had such crazy mechanics, which were maybe a bit overtuned and were very unforgiving if you messed something up, but they were still doable, even in relatively crappy gear, as long as people paid attention. Halls of Origination is still one of my favourite dungeons to this day because of its sheer epicness and I'm so god damn sad people are usually skipping 3-4 bosses in that dungeon. Not just because I hate skipping bosses but because I like Egyptian mythology and think Setesh, Ammunae and Isiset have great and interesting mechanics. I also have to mention the two revanmped Zul instances, maybe they aren't on the level of previous raids, but are still very interesting and well done IMHO. I really like the fact you still get an extra mount in Zul'Aman provided that you do the mechanic properly. The last three added dungeons, well, who can hate the Well of Eternity? I was never a HC raiding person, so I kinda welcomed the addition of LFR. It was an interesting time, even with the content drought at the end. But it allowed me to level *all* classes to max level, I really wanted to play and I enjoyed everything I played at the time. It was the first time I tried healers and was maining a resto shammy for a while. Holy priest and holy paladin were similar but different at the same time. DPS was great with survival hunter and frost dk being my favourites. All in all, I cannot hate Cataclysm. It was my first full expansion (as I started in late WotLK, patch 3.3 has just started) and the experience I had was excellent. I had fun. That's all that mattered.

    WOTLK dungeons were being plowed through because Dungeon Finder was introduced at the last patch of the expansion and people were in full ICC gear.
    Cata dungeons were puposefully released overtuned so they would be "hard" aka annoying garbage you had to slog through. The adds that spawned on Ripsnarl in Deadmines had way too much health and could barely be dpsed down to the point where you had to LOS in the ships cabin to aoe them

    What a nostalgic trip through WoW’s first divisive expansion! As someone who mainly pugged content back in those days, it really cannot be understated just how much of a profound impact Cata had when it came to how dungeons were designed and their place in the overall endgame. The backlash Blizzard received over the difficulty basically scared them out of making challenging 5-man content for the two expansions that followed. It wasn’t until the very last patch of WoD that mythic difficulty was introduced, and not until Legion did dungeons finally found their footing as a viable progression endgame. To me, the legacy of Cata is one filled with big missteps and harsh lessons for Blizzard and the player base alike. For those hard lessons learned, I am thankful for Cata and will always remember it fondly.

    The dungeons being harder was only kind of a problem because LFG tool was a thing in Cata. If you had a group of steady group people to group with the Dungeons were pretty much as hard as the BC heroic dungeons. They also completely redesigned a lot of how the game played for a lot of classes.

    Man, I think this is another case of Blizzard learning the wrong lessons from things.
    I was a hardcore WoW player up until Cataclysm. And I was not deterred by the increased difficulty.
    There are a lot of reasons I stopped playing in cataclysm. But the top ones for me are:
    1. The goblin zones and their cars just didn't work for me. It felt like a bridge too far with the cars and paved roads (albeit seussian in their construction).
    2. Leveling was not fun anymore. I am an alt-a-holic. It felt like the questing in leveling had had all teeth removed. Players DO like a challenge. I was trying to introduce a friend to the game at the time and she was just falling asleep bored as we were leveling. So then we tried LFD.
    3. LFD had somehow become worse. In WotLk LFD had already somewhat trivialized dungeons but leveling in Cata, LFD had started that slide into "no chatting whatsoever just W key and go to the next boss" that is now the norm. It was awful. These were not dungeons. They were loot pinatas.
    4. Transmog was just the last straw.
    The thing I remember saying to guildies and in game friends as to why I was quitting was something along the lines of: "This used to be an adventure that a Dungeon Master had set out for me and the friends I would make along the way. Now it just feels like a theme park where I get on the ride with strangers, am told I should be excited by the ride, then I get off again."
    If the end game dungeons really are challenging it might be worth trying cata classic if they have it at that level at launch.

    Cataclysm was the first time I drifted away from WoW. It may have even been the first time I unsubscribed from the game since I started playing in the final months of "vanilla." I remember coming into the game in Cataclysm around Firelands. I can't help but love it because of that even despite it's flaws. I remember being hooked on TB's wipeathon videos and all the guides including yours.
    I think the difficulty (or idea of it by the time I came in) is the reason I'm as die hard for challenging content in the game now.

    Guild perks, rewards & achievements were such a good idea. It's such a shame how it went. I remember when they first came out, everyone in the guild started working towards things. The guild members that didn't raid could work towards things for the guild, everyone could do something & feel that little bit extra involved in the guild.
    I never knew why it went away. Now I do. Sad.
