I have a theory that the department of mysteries was built where it was because of the gateway to death. I feel like they wouldn’t have been able to make an actual gateway between life and the afterlife. I think they found it, and decided to build the department around it.

Ugh, haven't read the book, but isn't it Malfoy's time-turner that they are using in The Cursed Child? The one Lucius Malfoy created, that wasn't "signed" into the Ministry. Moreover, I think he created it after the events of the Second Wizarding War.

The place in the department I REALLY am attracted to is that veil to the land of the dead. In the book, it was entrancing, and you could hear whispers from those who have died beyond it. I would definitely want to go in there and explore, even knowing there was no return journey. In Harry Potter lore, death is but the next great adventure.

I always felt that the department of mysteries was the most important place in the entire series. Like it's the place where all of the most powerful and potent magic that we see in the entire series originated from. The concepts of Love, intuition, time, death etc. All things that even muggles possess, but are undeniably magical in nature, originated from there.
The tentacles coming out of the brains were thoughts!! In the order of the phoenix, after Ron gets attacked by the brains, Madame Pomphrey says that thoughts leave deep scars

I think there is a slight plot hole in the statement where the Ministry announces that Muggle-borns are most likely to have obtained magic by force. I did a little research on Squibs and I found out that if a Squib marries a Muggle, the Magical blood that the Squib has will be passed down and can spark up generations later. Just because a Squib is incapable of Magic doesn't mean that they don't have Magical blood. I also think that this is the reason why Professor Slughorn thought that Hermione was related to a well-known wizard with the same surname. Granger may not be a muggle surname at all, but a wizarding surname whose flow was broken because of a Squib being born in the family and generations later, the magic sparks up inside of Hermione.

These were the weirdest scenes in the book. But it tells so much. Even that they’d study Muggle brains - made sense they were threatened by Muggle intelligence having lost the war against them, even Hermione says that Muggle-borns have an advantage because they were so used to “thinking” before magic and continue to “think”.

I always wondered if there was some connection. Like the orphanage had some mysterious power related to the Deparment of mysteries that now one knew about but that is why Tom Riddle ended up there.

I was always curious about the Veil in the Department of Mysteries death room, When Sirius Black is killed by Bellatrix LeStrange, Sirius falls through the Veil as he dies but does a healthy person who passes through the veil die as well or does it not affect them?

There's a theory that the veil was actually built by the Peverell brother who had the resurrection stone. He summoned his wife from the veil. The wife came back neither dead or alive and became depressed because she wasn't supposed to be alive. I bet that what would happen to any ghost who passes through the veil.

How do you become an unspeakable? I've always been so curious as to how you get to work for the dept of mysteries
Like all other ministry of magic jobs.....if there is an opening they must advertise it in some discrete manner and then you apply for it if you have the required level of OWL and NEWT grades in the required subjects.
Or they might recruit like the British spy agencies used to do by tapping potential candidates from university itself therefore in this case that will be Hogwarts with the help of a hogwarts professor.
@@vivek27789 I'd imagine the department is too high value to trust someone outside. I think they recruit people from inside the ministry. Those who have been there for decades and have worked in multiple departments would make the best fit as trustworthy.

I think it only people who can see death are able to hear the voices in the veil. Harry saw his parents, Cedric among others die, Luna saw he mom die and Neville can hear the voices as well (can't remember who he saw die). Ron and Hermione cannot hear the voices because they have never seen someone.

Fun theory: Dumbledore's the leader of the department of mystery. This is one reason he never became the minister of magic and instead kept a career in education.
Explains how the order was allowed to guard the prophecy room.
He gave Hermione the time Turner in order to evaluate her for future employment as well, she would have been the one of the main three least likely to abuse the Turner.
Explains how he knew the power of love would be the only thing to overcome Voldemort.
