      I built a 283, one of the first motors i built and it ran really strong in a 89 s10 with a th-350 trans. Motor was .040 over 289ci, had a set of stock vortec heads, rpm air gap, and a comp 268H .454/.454 lift with a 650 holley dp

    Heck yeah, I'm impressed! Those are bigger numbers than I expected too. Vortecs rock, and the LT4 Hot Cam seems to be a good street piece. I'm a big fan of this kinda combo; mild cam and decent heads. This is so streetable.

  • @HOMEWORK4.0

    2 weeks ago I guessed 395HP spinning to 6300!!! I wasn't too far off and I'm glad it made even more than expected!!! I love it made even more torque but a pretty square motor in the numbers!! I can't wait to see the next video with the spacer!
    Edit: I cannot believe how easy it is to build 400+hp nowadays! Just 20 years ago, you had to buy a Z06 to get 400HPs in a small block!!!

    • @chrisreynolds6520
      @chrisreynolds6520 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Why do you say that? 20 years ago I had a very similar setup in my 1983 G20. 5.7L Vortec with a Hotcam, GMPP Vortec Q-Jet manifold and headers. 407 hp and 438 tq.

    • @HOMEWORK4.0
      @HOMEWORK4.0 ปีที่แล้ว

      @chrisreynolds6520 That's awesome! I'm happy you shared that. Without knowing how much you spent 20 years ago to make 400HP, I guess I was comparing the cost and abundance of 400hp now vs the cost and abundance of 400hp in the 2003 where vettes and vipers had that kind of factory HP. I know it was possible to build a 400hp motor 20 years about, but by today's standards 400HP isn't uncommon. For example, an explorer ST cranks out 400HPs and some KIAs are boasting over 500HPs.

    6:40 .... the GM camshaft you mentioned, 208/221 - .474/.510 - 112LSA, its the exact same camshaft used in the ZZ4 crate engines when available at the time. Nice engine, but this modified vortec 350 is a nice upgrade, even with less compression, 9.3 vs 10.1(zz4) with L98 corvette aluminum heads, known to flow less than the stock vortec heads. I'd gladly take this budget buid vortec 350 over my ZZ4 crate engine currently running in my '79 malibu 2dr coupe anytime.

  • @lluwd
    @lluwd ปีที่แล้ว +3

    thats some awesome numbers! I'm not that surprised though, vortec engines have easily unlockable extra power.
    i pulled a 98 vortec from a pickup with 140k on it, re sealed it, new timing set and hardware, GM ramjet cam, edelbrock intake, shorty headers and slid it into a 93 OBS to replace the blown TBI 350 and wow!! that truck never had that much power before, not 400 hp but waaaaay stronger than TBI or a stock vortec. just from that small RV level ramjet cam, intake and headers and exhaust. it is a different animal.
    idk how much HP i have from that combo, never dynoed. maybe 325-350HP and like around 375 torque? just a guess. its a really strong vortec either way and runs great.
    thatnk you for making these videos, so appreciated.

      I have the summit 8802, and looking at the specs it's almost a 1 to 1 rip off of the GM hot cam. Only real difference is that it hits .525 lift with the 1.5 rockers instead of needing the 1.6 Rocker that the hot cam needs to achieve the same lift. Very happy with how it is working with my SBC, where the old comp cam I had would fall on its face at high rpm. It even plays nice with my Ebay gt45 turbo!

    Really sweet to see the lt4 cam results because I have the lunati 270 voodoo roller for my 383. Identical valve timing as the hot cam just different lobe profile and .549/.565 lift with 1.6 rockers, ground 6.5° advanced vs the lt4's 2° advance.
    385ci somewhere low-mid 9.1 compression. Budget afr 195 heads with 5 angle valve job, smoothed runners, port matched, thin rings, 0.040 quinch, performer quadrajet intake. 450hp I'll be happy but any closer to 500hp I sure wouldn't complain. No matter what it puts out it'll be a major upgrade from the bone stock 120hp/210tq 1985 tbi 4.3 in the el camino running on 5 cylinders😂😂 poor ol gal can't even maintain 60mph at the moment 😢

    Love that I found your channel, doing the exact build I'm looking to do. I'm getting the last things dialed in on my 84 ls camaro but ive been doing a ton of maintenance and refreshing on a 88 TA LB9 T5 car I bought. Here soon I'm hoping to snag a marketplace L31 for cheap and either way I'd like to take it to a local shop to be refreshed. I'm set on the lt4 hotcam as well and your videos have only reinforced it for me.
    I want to keep it a TPI car with a super simple reliable setup that will still be able to be my fair weather daily driver but have enough power to get out of its own way. I'm definitely going to have great low end with the TPI but definitely not going to see near your hp numbers. I scored an old school Street & Performance TPI Intake /w Ported SLP High-Flow runners so hopefully it'll be enough to let the hotcam cook a bit.

Keep the Vortecs alive, I believe they are one of the best GM engines ever made that are affordable. The LS line up is for sure all the craze these days, that said dollar for dollar i'd put the challenge out there the Vortec holds up well.

    since you are running carbs... do you bring the RPMS up to around 1700 and look at the air fuel ratio display. see how close it is to 12.7. change the idle feed restrictions to fix this off idle lean or rich..
    many holleys ship with 0.031" idle feed restrictions .. those are about right for 327, 331 engines.. 347 to 360 engines need a 0.032" idle feed restriction..
    if you bring the rpms up to 3700 to 4000 and hold steady.. if its lean.. go up a size on the primary main jets.. if its rich.. go down a size and retest..

    Really wished you had run some basic 1-5/8" long tube. Or even shorty, block-huggers for some real-world numbers since this engine recipe would be great for street-going, weekend cruiser hot rods that wouldn't be running pricey, high-flowing 1-3/4" headers. I don't think the smaller headers would've hurt output too much. But it would've been nice to know how much they did.

    • @cuttersperformance
      @cuttersperformance  ปีที่แล้ว

      The headers used are a chassis header unlike alot of dyno headers you see, but yeah would have been interesting to see the what 1 5/8 would change, honestly probably not around though. Also believe it or not those 1 3/4 headers are like $315 (Hooker racingheart)

    Love this! I built my 98 5.7l on a budget using your videos with beehive springs,retainers, offset keepers, magnum roller rockers,and extreme energy cam(.495/.502). I also added a bbk 80mm throttle body using the oem plenum. My question for you is engine management…im swapping the 4.3 out for this built 5.7. The truck is a 5speed manual. Do i get my computer flashed for my cam set up or do i go aftermarket? Something with a autotune feature maybe?

    Very good videos you putting out on L31 Vortec SBC. How does this LT4 Hot cam perform from idle to middle range rpm? Does it kick in straight from idle to 5000 rpm? Or does it kick in from like 2000 rpm to the red mark? I have a L31 Vortec SBC I want to swap cam shaft. I am not sure if a LT4 Hot Cam is the right cam shaft for me. I am not in to racing. This is a Truck (1980 Chevrolet C 10) I am using as a dayli driver, sometimes towing and sometimes to do traffic light "racing". I am rarely goin to push it to high rpm range, to 5000 rpm. I am going to use pump gas. I love it when I push down the throttle pedal from idle to the red line and feel my back is pushed to the car seats. Like instant action. Is a LT4 Hot Cam is not the right one for me? I would be grateful for any recommendation. Thanks.

    Hi Pat. I continue to have questions. :). I’ve heard the plastic gaskets for the intake manifold are trash. That’s what came in my kit. Do you have a recommendation and part number for intake manifold gaskets that you like? Also a head gasket for a motor that is not decked and heads not surfaced. I saw you use that steel shim head gasket, but I’m not sure I want to go that route as I’m worried about getting a good seal since nothing has been surfaced. Is there a standard head gasket and part number you recommend? Maybe I shouldn’t worry so much about the steel shim gasket? I know with a standard head gasket my compression will be about 3 tenths of a point lower. Thanks for the continued assistance.

    Pat, what’s your thoughts on the Summit 8802 cam, that’s supposed to be an LT4 Hot Cam copy without having to use the 1.6 rockers? On paper it looks very comparable, and for the price = Gold! Any input you can offer? This is the cam I’m going to run in a stock Vortec bottom , like yours, and I have followed ALL your Vortec head vids- so hoping for similar results…… I still have to measure (like you informed me!) the clearance on my full roller aluminum rockers, with the 787 retainers and either the .050, or .030 offset keepers (like you also have taught me!), and make sure it’ll clear, or grind the wings down to fit given the minimums you said I should look for! You are almost a Demi-god on how to make these Vortecs rock!! I called Felpro about using their .015/ .016 steel shims on my 100,000 mile short block and built Vortec heads, and they recommended using spray high tack (Indian head/ permatex) on both sides and torque down before dry. Thoughts?
    ALSO! huge question! I lapped my old valves in, but thought- as cheap as new Engine Tech valves were for stock Vortecs, I decided to buy new valves. Question- do I now need to lap the new valves in also, so they seal right, or are new valves fine without lapping?
    Everything I’m learning- I’m learning from you, brother!!! THANK YOU!!!

    • @cuttersperformance
      @cuttersperformance  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yeah that cam will work just like the LT4 hot cam, the summit cams are great quality.
      Careful spraying some of the felpro shims gaskets as they have a rubber film on them that will react and peel when sprayed with copper spray. If it's a bare shim gasket then yes the copper spray is a great idea to prevent water seepage.
      Never a bad idea to lap in new stainless valves on old seats.
      Cheers! Pat

      @@cuzz63 Mine made 407 hp @5,600 and 438 tq @ 3,600 with old style Doug tri-ys meant for a G-van (collectors even to the trans mount on a 700r4) and an 850 cfm Q-Jet on a GM Performance Q-Jet vortec intake (removed from a 330 hp 350 HO crate engine). 1" Hamburger tapered spacer under the carb. I later plumbed up the EGR valve and it passed emissions much cleaner than the worn out 83 305. At 5,300 lbs with a converter stalling 2,800 rpm and 3.08 gear it went 13.50s @ 101 mph. This was back in 2005 FWIW. Mine was a 4-bolt main stock bottom end, stock rod bolts and all, my WOT 1-2 shift was 6,300 rpm and 2-3 was 6,000. 2-3 could have been higher, but mechanically shifted transmissions are hard to get dialed in exactly how one wants. I tried making some passes on a 125 hp plate unit, but the 700r4 was not having it and cooked the 3/4 clutches multiple times. I had a blast making a brick of a G20 conversion van quick. I drove it everywhere with the ac on and really decent fuel mileage as well, got over 20 mpg on several 1,000+ mile road trips.
