This is lovely Miriam! The quilting makes the solid colored blocks look like gauze. I'm absolutely going to try this on my next quilt. Thank you for your indepth description and demonstration. You're an excellent teacher.
I know you have this sped up, but the quilting kinda goes with the music. 😍 Maybe I need to listen to music, a genre that goes with whatever pattern used could really get you in the zone.
Yes!!! When I was editing the video, I was like wait...the movements go PERFECTLY with this song! haha!! Music can definitely help you get into the groove!
Miriam!!! Hi my friend! I can tell you love quilting. I want to make another quilt for my bed, but that is very much OVERWHELMING... So I 6:59 will do a lap quilt. I love the quilt you had up with the squares. Breaking it up answer quadrants. Seems like it's wouldn't make it more manageable. well, at least it does in my head.😅😅😅 Have a great weekend my friend!
Great free motion idea. Thanks for that! Going to try it this weekend. Also, thanks for the discount code for Missouri Star. "Ran" right over and bought some stuff for a new project. Keep up the great ideas.
I have quilting gloves that cover just the thumb, index and middle fingers, and wrist. They are much cooler. I got mine on Amazon several years ago at a reasonable price. I looked them up just now and the price is a lot higher, maybe four times higher. I have no idea why, but I wouldn’t pay that amount now. I really like the meander pattern you demonstrated. I have two Bernina’s with BSR’s (stitch regulators), but I haven’t used them much. I like to quilt my small projects with built-in decorative stitches.
I've seen those type of gloves, but yes, I hate spending a fortune on something like that haha! The curse of being a frugal quilter, right? And I love that you use decorative stitches to quilt smaller projects! I've done that before with my other machine, and they add such whimsy to a project! Thanks so much for watching, Carol!
When I was in high school (way back in the 1970's) the Home-Ec teacher would have us draw a design on plain paper and then unthread the sewing machine and practice the designs by sewing on those lines. Basically sewing, but with no thread in the machine. It was very helpful for hand-brain coordination. Miriam, I am loving this series! I am a new subscriber of about 4-5 months and have really enjoyed watching all of your videos! Keep it up girl! Thank you so much for your videos and you are a GREAT teacher!
Yes! I've done that before too, or you can do the same thing with a practice quilt sandwich. Just remove the thread so you can get the feel of moving the layers of the quilt under the needle. I have heard that some of the newer computerized machines won't let you stitch without thread, which is a bummer! Thank you so much for the wonderful compliment, Paula! I really appreciate it!
This is an excellent free motion design. I like the density you use because when the quilts are washed over and over, it creates the same sort of texture as some of my vintage quilts. I used to make quilts for Kids with Cancer which was an organization in South Carolina. I used a similar design because I thought it went so well with the modern quilt patterns I was using. The best part is pulling them out of the dryer after washing them to see the crinkle effect! I can see why you chose to use it on the latest quilt you just finished with the African fabric.
Wow that's amazing and beautiful. I've always done stich in the ditch but will definitely try this on some small things to start with. Thank you so much for the video.
Great tutorial! I love your honesty, the quality of the photography is so great & that music is so inspiring!! I see new placemats on my dinner table tomorrow, lol!! from practicing this technique!! Thanks again for ALL you do! I'm so excited to get my Cozy Picnic completed!!
Thank You Miriam, this quilting design looks easy enough to do. I haven't done any free motion quilting yet. But I think I can practice doing this one. The only thing I wish you would have done was on a practice sandwich, done the quilting in a different color thread and a more of a close-up angle to be able to see you doing it more clearly. I'm definitely going to try this one.
Thank you for the feedback, Marion! You're right, I should have done that. Maybe I'll make a Short using your suggestion, so you can see it clearer/better.
Oh my gosh! I love this! I’m constantly doing loop de loop - also forgiving - but this is so awesome! It’s like the loops are squares instead! Why have I not seen this before lol! Thank you! Also a tip that helps me - 🍷hahahahaha thank you!

Love this FMQ pattern, Miriam! Thank you for showing us how to do it. I will definitely try this one. And thank you for the discount for Missouri Star as well.

I like this stitch and I'm going to give it a try. I started practicing fmq last week for the first time. I've been trying to get a little practice in daily. I think I'm going to try this design instead, as it is more forgiving. I hope at some point you will cover fmq using rulers. I haven't ordered from Missouri yet but I tried the dual purpose marking pen and I love it. I just ordered the rotary blades you use from Amazon. So glad to know about them. Looks really good, thank you for sharing. I have a quilting Janome machine, but it isn’t easy to quilt large things , as it only has a smallish add on machine table. Think having an inset machine may belo me more thank you, I have learnt a lot. Looking forward to watching more videos you may do and as a fairly new machine sewer learning more.x
Oh yeah a larger table or inset table would definitely make quilting larger quilts easier. They may make a larger extension table for your machine? It wouldn’t hurt to look! 💖

Love this quilt design. I've been hearing so much about quilt as you go. Have you done that or is it just easier to just put it all together the regular way? Thanks for demonstrating how to do the meandering quilt design.
I've done a little bit of quilt as you go, and it's definitely fun! There are some quilters that that is ALL they do. I say try it and see if you like it! Ya never know! I prefer piecing a quilt top and then quilting after just because you can do much more complex designs that way, and it just feels like a better fit for me! Thank you very much for watching!
Hi there! Did you return your clear acrylic table that you bought for the Juki? I almost bought one but haven’t seen you use it so decided not to buy it after all. Can you tell me why you haven’t been using it? Thanks! BTW your excitement and enthusiasm about quilting is contagious! ❤️
Hi, Tammy! I still have the table! I’ve honestly just not taken the time to play around with it. 🫣 I definitely need to though, because it think it’s going to make quilting really fun and maybe even easier! Thank you for watching! 💖
@@StitchObsessedThanks Miriam! I’d love to see a video on how you use it and what you think about it. I also have very limited space in my sewing room so the real estate it took up made it very awkward to use. Looking forward to your next free motion episode. I hope you can figure out what to do with your other quilt. I’ve been there. But finished is better than perfect - right? Thanks so much for this tutorial. This will be the next FMQ design I use on my next project. Perhaps your "SEW" wall hanging. LOL! Another great video! Oh forgot to ask how many stitches per in do you usually have when you FMQ? Just trying to get an idea how large or small my stitches should be. Thanks.
Oh yeah! 11” throat space?! What machine do you have? That’s massive! I’ve actually done this quilting on a King with my machine which has a 9” throat. 👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you for such a detailed and easily unferstood tutorial. I am about to make my first quilt so I will do a lot of practice before I attempt your pattern!!. As you do a back stitch when you start guilting, do you just snip the threads on the back of the quilt, or do you hand sew them in? Thanks
Oh my goodness, so exciting you’re going to make your first quilt!!! You’re going to do great!!! 👏🏻👏🏻 I just snip the threads on the back. I know some quilters like to bury the threads, but I guess I’m lazy and just snip them 😂
How do you decide what color thread to quilt with? I've done 2 quilts now with a lot of black in them (shashing) the blocks are lighter or multi colored. I used off white on one but I'm not overly happy with it. The one I'm about to quilt also has a lot of black in it. Would the variegated thread be better? I love this free motion pattern and can't wait to try it. I'm still learning !!! Love your instructions!
That’s a REALLY good question! So, when I’ve had drastically different colors of sashing, I’ve used dark thread for the darker fabrics and light thread for the lighter fabrics. Variegated thread is another good choice! If you want to stick with just one color of thread, I would pick the color that is dominate in the quilt top. It’s really up to you and what looks good to YOUR eye. I hope that helps! 💖
Yes, you like your quilting to be pretty dense. Looks lovely, but tighter than I would like. As you say, that is the beauty of quilting: you do you, and that is correct, no matter what anyone else says. Also nice is the quilting community because nearly all quilters will advise people to do what feels right to them. This art, not manufacturing.
I don’t, but I know some quilters do! It really depends on your preference. If I start quilting anywhere on the quilt top, I do backstitches to hold the stitches in place and try to do that in a seam so you don’t see it!
I have tried this for the first time as a beginner with a quilt sandwich- my problems- eyelashes on the back and my top thread keeps breaking. What am I doing wrong? Loving your videos, very helpful, thanks! I have a beautiful quilt made that I don’t want to ruin with the quilting.
Hi, Judith! Sounds like your top thread tension is too tight. Check your machine's user manual to see how to loosen the tension a bit. That can happen sometimes when you go to FMQ. Let me know if you have any other questions or need more help! Good luck!
I do not, I backstitch. I’m a bit of a rebel when it comes to machine quilting 🫣 lol and no, I don’t really quilt is rows, I just go with the flow! It’s all part of free motion aspect of quilting 💖 thank you for watching!

When you use the elmer glue method do you wash your quilt as soon as you are doine quilting it?
I wash the quilt when it is finished. So after binding the edges. It washes out very easily and I’m left with a beautiful, soft quilt 💖
That’s exactly right! You figure out what you like and what you prefer! 👏🏻💖
Do you have to pull your threads up to top
I don’t, but I know some quilters do! It really depends on your preference. If I start quilting anywhere on the quilt top, I do backstitches to hold the stitches in place and try to do that in a seam so you don’t see it!
@@StitchObsessed thank you I will try that out and see how it works out.
Good luck!
You don’t bring your bobbin thread to the front? I thought everyone did that. Also, do you do your quilting in rows? I couldn’t tell.
I do not, I backstitch. I’m a bit of a rebel when it comes to machine quilting 🫣 lol and no, I don’t really quilt is rows, I just go with the flow! It’s all part of free motion aspect of quilting 💖 thank you for watching!
Where do I find the code for MSQC?
You don’t need a code. All you need to do is click my link, shop like normal, and when you go to check out the discount is applied automatically! Pretty cool! 💖
I have done the ripping out of quilting because it didn’t look right.
How long is the 20% off? This video is a month ago.
It’s still good through May! They basically renew the discount each month while I am a partner. 👏🏻💖
@@StitchObsessed I did find a recent one and saw it on there, thank you.

I have been quilting since the 80’s……..there’s a speed button?
Yes, some sewing machines have a speed control lever or button! 👏🏻

I’ll need to watch this again and slow your quilting way down. Maybe I’ll be able to follow you then.
