That’s how my grandfather taught me to do this type of scaling. ❤ And to think basic measuring like this was how the Egyptians made the pyramids.
So glad to see you with your dad. I an 84, my dad died in 1980 and I still miss him. He was really smart like your dad. Did I hear your dad say how a c arpenter
What an uplifting message Miriam. Yes. You got your quilt marked (mind blown!) but you have the love and support of your dad and mom who believe in you. That’s everything. I had parents like that too. I could never have figured out the math. That was a joy to watch. ❤❤
8:57pm Wednesday. Your Dad explained this way over my head...but the visual lesson convinced me to try it on my next quilt. Thanks for this special pattern!!
This tutorial is so beautifully personal that I became emotional. "Good thing for memory" Thank you so much for sharing your work with your dad all of us that follow you. Great work; both of you. ❤❤❤
I bet your dad could figure out how to mark out the Baptist fan quilting lines too, *hint hint.* it seems everything nowadays requires having to buy a template. You and your dad could start a series on how to quilt w/o having to buy expensive templates, I know I’d watch. Your dad’s idea on how to mark out spirals was ingenious, I could figure out what and how he was doing this and will be able to use his idea on my own quilts. Thx dad for this invaluable info. It’s obvious you and your dad have a wonderful relationship, all of us should be as lucky. ❤ Edited to say: I subscribed the second I saw this video, I look forward to watching more of your tutorials. Aww yay! Thanks so much for subscribing! And you’re SO right! Those templates are so expensive; we could definitely do more videos for different marking techniques 🤓💖 thanks for the great suggestion!
Thank you, not just for the spiral tutorial but the absolute joy and love of watching you and your dad work on the project together. I lost my dad several years ago and I could hear him and I in your banter and giggles. It brought back so many cherished memories of working on projects with my dad. I can't wait to see the final quilt!
Love that you have included your dad to help you. My dad would never do anything like this. But my husband has helped me many times. I will have to try this method. Thanks for sharing your quilting with all of us. You both are great teachers. ❤
So awesome to see you and your dad working together and hear you laughing so much!!!! Loved seeing how you marked your guidelines to get ready for the next step. Thank you for sharing ❤
Years ago I made round table toppers/cloths for customers and I marked my cutting line using a similar method. Such a fun design to stitch. Your dad did a great job helping you to problem solve it out.
I love seen you work with your Dad. The Dad jokes were awesome. 🤣🤣 As soon as he started with the math and pulled out the tape measure, it reminded me of asking my hubby about something electrical. 🤦🏻♀️ With hubby I’m like “Just fix it or tell me in SIMPLE TERMS how to fix my issue.” Like “Am I going to overload the breaker to the sewing room if I plug this in too?” 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Y’all made an awesome team and I don’t blame Mom for just sitting and enjoying you making memories with your Dad!!! ENJOY HIM!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Lol!!! I hear you! It’s like, I don’t need to know the scientific proof and reasoning for why this is gonna work. I just need to know IF it’ll work 😂🥴 thanks so much for watching, Laura!!!💖
I love this. I'm 71. Just learning free motion. My late husband had a full beard. Love that too. My dad was into mechanical drawing and wood working. Wanted to build me a quilting frame. I lost him when I was 19.
I enjoyed watch you with your dad. My dad was really smart, too. I am 84 myself, have lived a lot longer than Daddy. He was only 65 when he died. I still miss him (and Mother) every day. Love and enjoy being with your folks while you can. I have just found you and an really enjoying you, you have a great personality. Joy Carter, Mesquite, TX (a suburb of Dallas).
Thank you so much for linking me to this! I love ya dad btw! And I’m an ultra cyclist in my spare time so I knew looking at his calves he was a sports man of sports. 😂 but I’m sooooo going to try this spiral method. I’m currently doing your tote bag. So I’m gonna try free quilting on that for another Miriam first for me. All my stuff is on a 1957 Singer 201k.
Aww yay!!! I’m so glad you’re going to give this a try! It was seriously a lot of fun to do! And yep! My dad actually didn’t really get into fitness till about 2 1/2 years ago! He’s always been strong cuz he’s a hard worker, but now he’s a legit meat head! 😂 that’s what I tell him anyways! That’s amazing you’re using a machine from the 50s! That speaks to the quality machines used to have! 👏🏻💖
This is brilliant. I have been wondering how to do other machine quilting besides straight line and cross hatch. I don't know much about machine quilting because I have always done it by hand. Thanks to you and your dad for showing me other ways of doing it.
My Dad has been gone for 4 years now; we did a lot of projects together (he was a highly accomplished Architect; he was brilliant! Oh, how I miss him.). Anyway, The spiral turned out beautifully. I saw the finished quilt; absolutely gorgeous! Thanks Miriam and Dad ❤
So cool your Daddy helped you, Awesome job!! cant wait to see the quilting of it. LOL I actually LOL at the end when he bent over and you made THE sound LOL. Such a fun video, Thank you and your parents
A. Very clever dad you have there. Wish I had mine to have helped me with my quilting. A very good idea to be able to do yourself, you must have the difficult bit to finish off. Should look very good when finished. Thanks for sharing .
Just multiply the diameter of the dowel by 3.14 or 22/7 to get the distance between lines of the spiral. This is a dowel and a piece of string acting as an analog computer! Use paper and pencil - cheaper than fabric and marker.
This was great! Made me all warm and fuzzy to see you with your dad, and made me think of mine. He would have been all over the challenge to figure out the spirals as well. What a fun memory for you both. I’m excited to see the finished quilt!

Awww, your dad is so nice! And smart! I just might consider doing spirals for my next quilt! Just wanted to give a little hint, when you post the definition of diameter at 5 minutes, what you’re actually saying is radius. Radius is from the center to the outside. Diameter is twice that, all the way across the circle from one side to the other. It obviously did not matter though because your quilt turned out gorgeous!
So nice to see you work calmly patiently and skillfully. I joke that if I had 3 minutes more of patience, I might have accomplished great things. The circular design is very cool as is the means to draw it. Watch out for the markers that fade before you finish a project.
