Mate, that looks so so so much better. Fabulous job so far. I'm so interested to see how the paint detail goes. I'm sorry I don't have a solution for the rust proofing. But you are inches away from turning a vintage golf original legendary putter, in to an absolute classic!!! How you can find a solution for that, and for me, the phrase "They don't make em like that anymore" rings absolutely true, and if I were you, A STONE COLD KEEPER!!! Good luck with the rest of the project!!!

Scotch bright drill pads, buffing wheel, autosol polish. Finish with rust resistant metal gun wax. Not tried this combo but it will work. Boom, new club.

Coat it with Gtechniq C5, it's a ceramic coating used in car detailing and it'll last forever on a putter.

Ok... Simon!!! Get some nickel plating solution (Amazon) about £25... Nickel anode (Amazon) £ 8... 12v DC adapter (old phone charger or something like that). Sand and buff the putter until shining like a mirror. Place putter head in solution. Attach neg 12v to putter head. Attach pos 12v to nickel anode. Place anode in solution with putter head. Do not let them touch each other. It will take less than 5 min and you will have a great plated putter that will not rust!
Addition... You will need to sand to 600 wet/dry finish. Also make sure you clean with acetone and then window cleaner before putting into nickel solution

After the putter is polished and letters painted, instead of clear coat, I first use Turtle Wax Ice Seal & Shine then Top Coat with Turtle Wax Hybrid Ceramic spray Wax . I tied clear coat with proper prep...just feel a Turtle Wax can be used on shafts, hossles, and club heads...been using this to restore and preserve 4 sets of clubs this year. Sheds water, debris is a lot less on club face and bottoms, clubs clean w a little water.

An old school Ping putter could be a nice next project, not too expensive and quite satisfying to see a good change on, since they usually are rather beaten up. By the way, I’ve been stalling my own project with building my Vega iron I bought from you last winter and look forward to share the result after the season here in Finland soon is over and I finally get to it building my first own club from parts. use a very fine steel wool pad to polish it up and get out all the little sand paper marks. and a cheap way to coat it would be to do an oil can finish or gun metal coating. and remove the old paint with acetone and a knife. paint fill with nail polish, and wipe off with acetone on a paper towel. Ive done that on wedges and a putter by hand and they came out pretty good

Bilt Hamber's Atom-Mac is a corrosion inhibitor that is applied using water. It protects any surface or area where corrosion may occur. Atom-Mac forms an invisible atomic shield against corrosion of ferrous metal. Protect water collecting voids, braking surfaces, suspension components as well as bicycles, garden equipment and machinery. Atom-Mac can be added to rinse water to prevent flash corrosion of grit blasted surfaces, which makes this an ideal product to have for winter driving.

Not 100% sure how to stop it rusting of you've removed the playing, however you can get a clear ceramic coating for car paint which protects it not 100% sure if that would seal it and stop it rusting but may be worth a look
