I could not agree more the Blackbird is the coolest plane to ever fly I believe, and if you listen to the pilots stories they were all a little nuts to some degree you had to be the best of the best to fly one

One of the best things about living in Wichita Kansas (Air Capital of the World) is seeing many of these amazing planes in the manufacturing phase, it's like watching and building one huge model. I worked for Cessna for many years which builds a lot of the minor and some major parts for military aircraft.
I was deployed to McConnell AFB after 911 to augment the 22nd Security Forces Squadron. I was able to see the progress of the Boeing 747 that was to have a chemical laser on board. I’m from Utah but I fell in love with Wichita.

One thing this country is very good at is technology. If you haven't seen it yet(can't remember the older videos), the channel Real Engineering has a really good video on the SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest plane ever made, as well.
No I hate to say this the one thing that this country is very good at is killing. From a young age we are taught exactly how to use a gun and a knife either through video games movies TV the Boy Scouts we know very young how to kill. Our elderly are very good at it. My grandpa is almost 100 years old and every single year he goes bow hunting and rifle hunting for anything bigger than a pig and he always comes back with meat. He taught us very young aim for the heart if you destroy the lungs you kill the creature. That and our citizens have weapons that are just as good if not better than our enemies. And the Blackbird was not the fastest plane ever made. That would be the Aurora. It's so fast that by the time you actually hear it it's back at its home base Landing. It's so fast that it has no known top speed. It's so fast that when it's test pilot pushed it to its limits the pilot literally turned into liquid. And if you don't believe me you can look it up on DARPA's website. And remember all of this is the things that we want our enemies to know. Just imagine the things that you have no idea that we even have. Like believe it or not we're about 9 years away from having energy weapons handheld plasma cannons guns that shoot literal lightning bolts..... like I said in so many previous videos. Here in the United States we are so good at killing that it even frightens us. Literally 85% of everything that kills on this planet we invented.

SR-71 technically was not,the X-15 was the fastest ever recorded around 1968 or close not sure on date but in the 60s,it reached over 4000 mph it could dbl the speed of the blackbird,it was a project plane NASA built,it would reach the edge of space,But they never went anywhere with it,reason most never heard of it,more or less it was a rocket ship,built like a plane!!

I was a Mechanic in the Navy, also dubbed as Mech. The rate, or job, is called AD, and specifically deals with the aircraft's powerplant, or engines. You mentioning mechanic to your son made me think of those days. I loved them and will never trade that experience for the world.

F-22 is Air Superiority role, supposed to be the most lethal thing in the sky. F-35 is the mainstay of the Air Force (and other countries Air Forces). It's supposed to be the most advanced multi purpose fighter, which it is. But it falls short of the F-22 in lethality and stealth. However, the F-35 is much more versatile.
Hate to break the news, the F-22, while great for airshows (and if indeed it ever got into a dogfight), the F35 will kill it long before it even knows the F35 is there. This isn't "on paper". Every year it's been involved in Red Flag, the F35 has cleaned up everything thrown at it, usually in a 20 to 1 scenarios. In one interview, a general said they can't even come up with training for the F35s that really tests it. The F22, while a great fighter, is very limited by modern standards. It STILL can't share data or talk well with other platforms, STILL has 02 issues, and hasn't seen any meaningful upgrades since the program was cancelled. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on it. I love watching it (I live near Langley AFB, though I'm Navy myself) and it's a beast to see in demos, but the reality is, pitting each against each other, WITH their given strengths, the F35 will win. It's just a better platform.

The F-22 is a dedicated interceptor/air-superiority fighter with secondary ground attack capability. Thus a direct replacement for the F-15. The F-15 was was a far better pure fighter over the F-16, just as the F-22 is over the F-35.

The first prototype, Black Widow, is on display at the Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson AFB that's 20 minutes from me. The museum is absolutely huge. You really can't see everything in one day.
Here's a little tidbit of info for reference: the 5 to 6 billion (thousand-million for those of a British persuasion) operations per second that the plane's computer could accomplish is a single-core single-thread desktop cpu running at 5 to 6 GHz. A modern consumer desktop cpu would run circles around it, while using less power and generating less heat. For example, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800x3d (admittedly a high-end, but still consumer-level, processor) in the computer that I just built has 8-cores, each capable of running two operations (threads) simultaneously, for a total of 16. If all 8 cores are operating at their max speed of 4.5 GHZ, it comes to a whopping total of 72 billion (or thousand-million) operations per second. At worst, 12 times the performance of the F-22's cpu; and I bought the cpu at it's msrp of $449.99 USD. That's how far computer technology has come in the last 30 -40 years.
The same thing happened to Northrup with the F-20 vs the F-16. Also, "Mach" (pronounced: mock) is simply a measure of speed in reference to the speed of sound. Example: Mach 1 (the speed of sound) ≈ 761 miles per hour given certain weather conditions and temperature at sea level.
The F 20 was an export only plane that no one wanted because the USAF would not buy it. Regan did not want to export the higher tech planes for sale so he had companies build the F20 for export with their own money for sale then double crossed them and sold the F16's any way.

So many people like to say that the YF-23 was the superior plane, but obviously this is a baseless claim. It's one thing for Northrop to claim it, it's their product. But civilians love to give their opinions on things they know little about. There were several reasons why Lockheed was awarded the contract. 1. The YF-22 conducted live fire tests to demonstrate weapons compatibility. The YF-23 did not. 2. The YF-22 had more advanced cockpit displays and layout for controls. The side mounted stick was viewed as an advantage for the YF-22. 3. The YF-22 was viewed as a "safer" option due to its more conventional design. 4. Northrop was already in the hot seat with the U.S. Dept. of Defense because of the MASSIVE cost overruns and delays with the B2 Spirit Bomber. USAF did not want to fool with Northrop again.
The F-23 has one issue that everyone ignores or just plain out misses. During rolls or wing-overs, the F-23 had an issue of leaving wingtip contrails, thereby advertising it's position in the air. Not a good thing for a stealth aircraft. The F-22 also has slightly better maneuverability which is what you need for a fighter.
When I was working as a machinist, the company I was employed by had the contract to produce the parts for the landing gear for the F23 prototypes. The parts made for a very rugged plane able to land almost anywhere. It was a shame that it never went beyond prototype stage.
While the YF23 had many pros, I can see why it did not make it past the prototype stage. Northrop seemed to forget that the objective was to build an aircraft like it was to be produced and they seemed to build more of an interceptor then an air superiority aircraft. They used parts from the Harrier, F-15, and F-18 and then when the DoD was like thats not revolutionary they were like it will not have those in the prouction model. So they were expecting the DoD to trust that their complete redesign of the cockpit and weapons system and landing gear and oxygen system would work perfectly without demonstrating it. Also, the YF-23 was in the air months beofre the YF-22 and the YF-22 ended up flying twice as many hours. Also, Northrop did not fire any munitions from their aircraft and Lockheed did. While that was not required, it did demonstrate that Northrop was not prepared to do that because if they had built their aircraft to be fully operational then they would have responded by doing that as they had responded to all other achievements of the YF-22 by doing the same thing themselves but not there and if Northrop would not test their weapons system then that did not exactly give the DoD much confidence. So while I will agree that Northrop had a good aircraft, they demonstrated it very poorly and key systems were not even worked out yet.
Mach is the sound barrier. So breaking the sound barrier is Mach one and Mach 2 is twice the speed of sound. Russia and China both tried to compete with the F-22 and failed. They are now trying to make a 6th gen fighter. I am sure the US is already making a 6th gen fighter starting like 10 years ago.
We'll, we've stayed ahead of both countries for at least a century. And part of that reason is precisely what you said. More than one of the companies that create and build planes for the military were working on 6th generation platforms before the first F-22 entered military service.
There were two reasons that the YF-23 was not chosen by the USAF. 1> Lockheed exceeded its test requirements by firing a missile during the flight tests. Northrop was caught flat-footed as firing a missile was not on the test agenda. 2> Northrop was involved in building the B-2 "Spirit" Stealth Bomber at the time, and the officials were afraid that by also building a "Super Fighter", that the may become "stretched" so much that both projects would suffer. A third consequence of the decision to go with the YF-22, was that Northrop/McDonnell Douglas was forbidden to sell their aircraft to any other countries, as it would be a threat to the F-22's once they were built and in service. Northrop had built a "Super Fighter" once before, called the F-20 Tigershark. The USAF had no need for it, having just bought the F-16's, the US Navy couldn't use it, as it was a single engine, single pilot aircraft, (the Navy likes twin engine redundancy in case one fails, and twin crewed aircraft, mostly - there are exceptions). So Northrop requested to be able to sell them overseas. NO, No, No. The plane, while not wanted by the US, is too good to sell to potential enemies, or to countries that might be overrun and have the fighters captured, giving secrets to our enemies.

YAY!!! I've asked many times for this!!! I watched the "fly-off" and just knew that gorgeous, beautiful, sexy YF-23 had it in the bag. The "dusty old farts" in charge didn't like the new design.
There is another documentary floating around out there about the competition between the 2 prototypes. It represents the testing period a little more accurately than this video. There were benchmarks during the testing phase that each set of prototypes had to reach and the YF23 struggled to meet at least a couple of them at the time they were supposed to be tested. By all accounts each set of prototypes were remarkable planes but to suggest the YF22 was somehow inferior to the YF23 is asinine. The true capabilities of the F22 are still not completely known to the general public even after 20+ years of it being in service.
When a plane(or any object)reaches the speed of sound. Roughly 700 miles an hour(depending on altitude)it breaks the sound barrier causing a sonic boom. That is considered Mach 1 so Mach .75 is 3/4 the speed of sound and Mach 1.2 a little over the speed of sound. I still feel like you should check out the SR-71 Blackbird. It's not used anymore but it's an incredible piece of machinery. It could fly at Mach 3.5 plus(900 ft per second thats faster than an average firearm at the time) at altitudes of 80,000 feet.
You should check out the F-14 Tomcat. I was in the first f-14 squadron VF-1. They have been decommissioned but they were the mother of the twin tail fighter jets of today and was the aircraft used in the Topgun movie.
You should check out the 100 First air Borne, Army Rangers, and the Special Forces Green Barret! I'm 66 and very proud of my father for being a Green Barret. They are badass and not to be messed with. My dad was in the military for 12 years! Covert operations and the best of the best from the US!
I heard the question about what is Mach? Because the speed of sound varies greatly with temperature, air pressure and desity a new way to measure aircraft speed at or near the speed of sound. The Mach number takes all the veriables into account. That is way high speed planes use a Mach Meter to measure speed.
Hi, Fly by wire is using computers as the comtrols for the plane. So if the pilot turns the plane. The amount goes into a computer. and the compute will turn the plane. Its like using a joypad on a computer or gaming console. To play your games.
You guy should look at the Grumman A-6 Intruder. It's been retired for years now, but it is the most used jet in combat operation. Everyone that flew it, had nothing but good things to say about it.
I live in Nevada not to far from Nellis Air Force Base. I have seen fighter jets fly past the highway I was driving on. It was pretty amazing. They are loud but in an instant they are gone! It has happened a few times. It is really amazing to witness in person. I don't know what kind they were.

To test the fighting ability of the F22 they put 8 F35’s against 1 F22 now this simulation fight it blew the Air forces top brass’s mind the F22 took out all 8 F35’s without the pilots even knowing they were under attack
I recommend doing a reaction video to a true American hero “Marcus Latrell” a navy seal documentary about one of his missions. They even made a movie called “the lone survivor “ about his experience. There is a 2 part documentary about it on TH-cam, coming from the man himself.

Your F-35 Lighting II's come in 3 versions the A model is an Air Force version and the B is a Marine Corps version which has a Vertical/ Short Take-Off and Landing, while the C model has streghted landing gear with a tailhook for Naval Carrier Landings. That the reasons for the different types in service. While most going to forgiven buyers are the A versions of F-35's.

I’m very proud that MD developed the F15 Eagle, in service for over 40 years as a front line fighter of the USAF, and several variants in the Air Forces of allied nations. Trust me, the YF 23 platform hasn’t been scrubbed, or shelved. It’s now probably being further developed as the next generation hypersonic stealth fighter for the USAF. The US military doesn’t allow anyone to see what’s in the pipe until the gloves need to come off. The secrets have secrets. As a PS, the F15 has a modern variation called the Stealth Eagle. The regular variant is the only combat tested fighter currently in service to have NO KILLS AGAINST in combat. No enemies in combat have been able to kill an Eagle.
Jack Northrop was an amazing person. Watched the documentary on his company he knew the name of every single person that worked in his plant all the way down to the janitors and he would talk to them daily and make them feel just as important as the people build the aircraft. The Grumman corporation hands-down has built the most technologically advanced aircraft in the world. The skunks work division built the SR 71 blackbird and the F-117 Nighthawk and the B2 bomber. They start building a F117 and 1972 and no one knew a thing about it until the gulf war. Our pilots are the best in the world. They have the most training of any other pilots, and most will tell you Even an a less advanced aircraft they can probably beat the opponent. We literally spend millions per pilot by the time they get to the point where they’re in those jets.! As others have said what Mach is but that also changes with altitude temperature and pressure and humidity so Mach is not the same everywhere. The number that you’ve been quoted in the comments is a baseline for mach speed. That would be a good homeschool project for your kids to look up the math to that.
The skunk works is actually Lockheed Martin aviations creation as is the sr71 blackbird f117a nighthawk stealth fighter and u2 spyplane still in operation. These were all developed there during the 60s and mid to late70s and early 80s for the f117a. Lockheed Martin's skunk works also had a program they were working on in 1985 with the us navy to build a stealth catamaran style warship called project seashadow
Thrust vectoring makes the Raptor better in my opinion. The Russians have the SU-57 and it has it. You can do wild, crazy moves in a dog fight with thrust vectoring.

As an American that’s lived both in NZ and Oz about 20 years ago, retired in Texas now, I can only say that you have the most beautiful people and country in the world in my opinion. You might want to educate us US people to the fact that NZ is split into the north island and the south Island because we aren’t that geo smart. I am fortunate enough to live in Dayton Ohio the home of the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Both the YF 23 and F 22 are on display at the Museum but in different galleries. Even as a museum piece it's a beautiful aircraft.
The F 15 is one aircraft that you need to checkout, it's so well designed that it's still being upgraded and it could have been turned into a stealth aircraft with very few changes and has the best kill ratio of any fighter in history.
An existing airframe cannot be made truly stealth. The F15 (F21) would have been a completely new airframe designed from the ground up to make it stealth and it would have been every bit as expensive as the F22 and F35.
@@mjc1389 Not necessarily leaps and bounds have been made in RAM or Radar Absorbent Material. Many of the conventional airframes utilized for reduced radar cross-section are notoriously bad for actual flying so in the end its a trade off of maneuverability and speed for stealth hence why the first stealth aircraft were bombers / ground attack and not fighters. The thing is for a stealth fighter you don't need to reduce the radar cross section to the extent that the enemy cant see you. You just need to reduce it just enough that it slows down the enemy response to you and makes it difficult for radar guided munition to lock on. Fighters don't need to be "True Stealth" It will eventually get to the point that you no longer need the crazy stealth geometry just better or thicker RAM.
@@happyjohn354 You are missing mjc"s point. The F-15 was not designed from the ground up to be stealth. You can not make an aircraft be stealthy that is not designed to be from the ground up. You can make it be more stealthy but the F-15 will never be as stealthy as the F-22 or the F-35 without a complete redesign. Everything from the engine to the cockpit to the airframe has to be completely redesigned as well as the skin and weapons system.

@@TS-bj8my As I said you don't have to put it on everything just enough of the aircraft to slow down radar tracking and give active and passive radar guided munitions trouble a jet fighter does not need true stealth. Even if you don't cover things like turbine blades its still good enough to do that hence why slapping ram on existing airframes is a good budget option and why so many countries are experimenting with it. Trying to make a general purpose fighter that's as stealthy as a F-117 or B2 is a retarded task anyways as in order to remain stealthy it has to carry its weapons internally which severely sacrifices its carry capacity. and shows that the people in charge have more money than sense. Its the Bradly IFV program all over again.
The YF-23 competed with the YF-23 and came out second best. While the '23 was slightly more stealthy the F-22 was the better fighter, better at maneuvering, which is the role the plane competition was intended for. I followed the programs closely (aviation nut here). Truth, I liked the F-23 more back then just because it looked cooler, but the F-22 was proven the better plane.
You guys should check out the Abrams MBT as well as the history of American tanks. Maybe even check out the history of the US Navy, ships used during WWII up to Modern day such as some of our Battleships, Carriers, Destroyers and even our subs. I would say check out The Fat Electrician as he does videos on everything past and present related to the US Military but he uses a lot of profanity so they would be parent only reactions lol
Northrop merged with Grumman aircraft to form Northrop Grumman systems. They actually are more focused on military and high tech satellites in space but they do make a lot of navigational tech for commercial planes. Their bread and butter are laser systems for all sorts of things. The Lockheed Martin company is their main competitor in most areas but work together on others. Lockheed and Northrop and so many companies are currently collaborating on the trial fission reactor somewhere in Europe to try finding a clean source of energy. That reactor hasn’t even started yet as it’s not even built as the delays just keep mounting. They just test materials and see if it withstands the power if it doesn’t it’s thrown out and a search begins again. They already tested several power coils and no material can handle the heat before it melts it’s just slow finding what they need.
Many in Washington were concerned the F-23 was too advanced. They were sure that some systems could not be maintained or properly understood. It was basically a 5.5 generation fighter.

If you ever want to see a YF-23, there is one on display (last I heard) at the US Airforce Museum in Dayton, Ohio. It was rescued from the boneyard where it was waiting for disposal. Many other aircraft are on display there as well including the SR-71, XB-70, B-52, F-15, and A-10.
Although no longer in service, the SR-71 Blackbird is still one of the most awesome planes ever built. Please check it out. Always enjoy your videos.

No I hate to say this the one thing that this country is very good at is killing. From a young age we are taught exactly how to use a gun and a knife either through video games movies TV the Boy Scouts we know very young how to kill. Our elderly are very good at it. My grandpa is almost 100 years old and every single year he goes bow hunting and rifle hunting for anything bigger than a pig and he always comes back with meat. He taught us very young aim for the heart if you destroy the lungs you kill the creature. That and our citizens have weapons that are just as good if not better than our enemies. And the Blackbird was not the fastest plane ever made. That would be the Aurora. It's so fast that by the time you actually hear it it's back at its home base Landing. It's so fast that it has no known top speed. It's so fast that when it's test pilot pushed it to its limits the pilot literally turned into liquid. And if you don't believe me you can look it up on DARPA's website. And remember all of this is the things that we want our enemies to know. Just imagine the things that you have no idea that we even have. Like believe it or not we're about 9 years away from having energy weapons handheld plasma cannons guns that shoot literal lightning bolts..... like I said in so many previous videos. Here in the United States we are so good at killing that it even frightens us. Literally 85% of everything that kills on this planet we invented.

The. SR-71 technically was not,the X-15 was the fastest ever recorded around 1968 or close not sure on date but in the 60s,it reached over 4000 mph it could dbl the speed of the blackbird,it was a project plane NASA built,it would reach the edge of space,But they never went anywhere with it,reason most never heard of it,more or less it was a rocket ship,built like a plane!!

Two interesting aircraft to check out are the B-29 Superfortress and B-52 Stratofortress bombers.
The thing is most do not realize the B-52 can land at a 20 degree angle to the center line of the runway with it's nose still pointing down the center line of the runway

I was a Mechanic in the Navy, also dubbed as Mech. The rate, or job, is called AD, and specifically deals with the aircraft's powerplant, or engines. You mentioning mechanic to your son made me think of those days. I loved them and will never trade that experience for the world.
Your children and wife are all so intelligent. I can guarantee your son and/or has what it takes to one day pilot one of our marvels of air superiority. I would not have been 1/10th as attentive and engrossed as they are at their age. You all should react to the LA speed story. It's a funny story told by a former sr-71 pilot.
F-22 is Air Superiority role, supposed to be the most lethal thing in the sky. F-35 is the mainstay of the Air Force (and other countries Air Forces). It's supposed to be the most advanced multi purpose fighter, which it is. But it falls short of the F-22 in lethality and stealth. However, the F-35 is much more versatile.
Not the block 4 with more powerfuller motor.
For stealth the YF-23 Was better.
YF-23 WOULD HAVE CARRIED A BIGGER PAY LOAD FARTHER FASTER.
Hate to break the news, the F-22, while great for airshows (and if indeed it ever got into a dogfight), the F35 will kill it long before it even knows the F35 is there. This isn't "on paper". Every year it's been involved in Red Flag, the F35 has cleaned up everything thrown at it, usually in a 20 to 1 scenarios. In one interview, a general said they can't even come up with training for the F35s that really tests it. The F22, while a great fighter, is very limited by modern standards. It STILL can't share data or talk well with other platforms, STILL has 02 issues, and hasn't seen any meaningful upgrades since the program was cancelled. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on it. I love watching it (I live near Langley AFB, though I'm Navy myself) and it's a beast to see in demos, but the reality is, pitting each against each other, WITH their given strengths, the F35 will win. It's just a better platform.

The F-22 is a dedicated interceptor/air-superiority fighter with secondary ground attack capability. Thus a direct replacement for the F-15.
The F-15 was was a far better pure fighter over the F-16, just as the F-22 is over the F-35.

It’s honestly crazy that these planes look so futuristic and so powerful. It really makes me wonder what future planes will look like and handle.
Mach 1 is the speed of sound (768 mph / 1,192.68 Kilometers per Hour). Mach 2 (twice the speed of sound)= 1,522.4141 mph (2,385.36 Kilometers per Hour) Mach 3 (times the speed of sound) = 2,283.62115 mph (3,578.04 Kilometers per Hour).
1:12: The USAF has a "high-low" concept. A few very good high cost aircraft backed up by a large number of decent low cost aircraft. The F-35 is the low cost brother of the F-22.

The first prototype, Black Widow, is on display at the Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson AFB that's 20 minutes from me. The museum is absolutely huge. You really can't see everything in one day.
Here's a little tidbit of info for reference: the 5 to 6 billion (thousand-million for those of a British persuasion) operations per second that the plane's computer could accomplish is a single-core single-thread desktop cpu running at 5 to 6 GHz.
A modern consumer desktop cpu would run circles around it, while using less power and generating less heat.
For example, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800x3d (admittedly a high-end, but still consumer-level, processor) in the computer that I just built has 8-cores, each capable of running two operations (threads) simultaneously, for a total of 16. If all 8 cores are operating at their max speed of 4.5 GHZ, it comes to a whopping total of 72 billion (or thousand-million) operations per second. At worst, 12 times the performance of the F-22's cpu; and I bought the cpu at it's msrp of $449.99 USD.
That's how far computer technology has come in the last 30 -40 years.
And that's not even getting into the server rigs that have like 32 cores.

The same thing happened to Northrup with the F-20 vs the F-16. Also, "Mach" (pronounced: mock) is simply a measure of speed in reference to the speed of sound. Example: Mach 1 (the speed of sound) ≈ 761 miles per hour given certain weather conditions and temperature at sea level.
The f-16 was miles ahead of the f-20 tho.
The F 20 was an export only plane that no one wanted because the USAF would not buy it. Regan did not want to export the higher tech planes for sale so he had companies build the F20 for export with their own money for sale then double crossed them and sold the F16's any way.

So many people like to say that the YF-23 was the superior plane, but obviously this is a baseless claim. It's one thing for Northrop to claim it, it's their product. But civilians love to give their opinions on things they know little about.
There were several reasons why Lockheed was awarded the contract.
1. The YF-22 conducted live fire tests to demonstrate weapons compatibility. The YF-23 did not.
2. The YF-22 had more advanced cockpit displays and layout for controls. The side mounted stick was viewed as an advantage for the YF-22.
3. The YF-22 was viewed as a "safer" option due to its more conventional design.
4. Northrop was already in the hot seat with the U.S. Dept. of Defense because of the MASSIVE cost overruns and delays with the B2 Spirit Bomber. USAF did not want to fool with Northrop again.
The F-23 has one issue that everyone ignores or just plain out misses. During rolls or wing-overs, the F-23 had an issue of leaving wingtip contrails, thereby advertising it's position in the air. Not a good thing for a stealth aircraft. The F-22 also has slightly better maneuverability which is what you need for a fighter.
When I was working as a machinist, the company I was employed by had the contract to produce the parts for the landing gear for the F23 prototypes. The parts made for a very rugged plane able to land almost anywhere. It was a shame that it never went beyond prototype stage.
While the YF23 had many pros, I can see why it did not make it past the prototype stage. Northrop seemed to forget that the objective was to build an aircraft like it was to be produced and they seemed to build more of an interceptor then an air superiority aircraft. They used parts from the Harrier, F-15, and F-18 and then when the DoD was like thats not revolutionary they were like it will not have those in the prouction model. So they were expecting the DoD to trust that their complete redesign of the cockpit and weapons system and landing gear and oxygen system would work perfectly without demonstrating it. Also, the YF-23 was in the air months beofre the YF-22 and the YF-22 ended up flying twice as many hours. Also, Northrop did not fire any munitions from their aircraft and Lockheed did. While that was not required, it did demonstrate that Northrop was not prepared to do that because if they had built their aircraft to be fully operational then they would have responded by doing that as they had responded to all other achievements of the YF-22 by doing the same thing themselves but not there and if Northrop would not test their weapons system then that did not exactly give the DoD much confidence. So while I will agree that Northrop had a good aircraft, they demonstrated it very poorly and key systems were not even worked out yet.

Mach is the sound barrier. So breaking the sound barrier is Mach one and Mach 2 is twice the speed of sound. Russia and China both tried to compete with the F-22 and failed. They are now trying to make a 6th gen fighter. I am sure the US is already making a 6th gen fighter starting like 10 years ago.
We'll, we've stayed ahead of both countries for at least a century. And part of that reason is precisely what you said. More than one of the companies that create and build planes for the military were working on 6th generation platforms before the first F-22 entered military service.

There were two reasons that the YF-23 was not chosen by the USAF.
1> Lockheed exceeded its test requirements by firing a missile during the flight tests. Northrop was caught flat-footed as firing a missile was not on the test agenda.
2> Northrop was involved in building the B-2 "Spirit" Stealth Bomber at the time, and the officials were afraid that by also building a "Super Fighter", that the may become "stretched" so much that both projects would suffer.
A third consequence of the decision to go with the YF-22, was that Northrop/McDonnell Douglas was forbidden to sell their aircraft to any other countries, as it would be a threat to the F-22's once they were built and in service.
Northrop had built a "Super Fighter" once before, called the F-20 Tigershark. The USAF had no need for it, having just bought the F-16's, the US Navy couldn't use it, as it was a single engine, single pilot aircraft, (the Navy likes twin engine redundancy in case one fails, and twin crewed aircraft, mostly - there are exceptions). So Northrop requested to be able to sell them overseas. NO, No, No.
The plane, while not wanted by the US, is too good to sell to potential enemies, or to countries that might be overrun and have the fighters captured, giving secrets to our enemies.
Lol. The f20 is not nor never was a "Super fighter".

There is another documentary floating around out there about the competition between the 2 prototypes.
It represents the testing period a little more accurately than this video.
There were benchmarks during the testing phase that each set of prototypes had to reach and the YF23 struggled to meet at least a couple of them at the time they were supposed to be tested.
By all accounts each set of prototypes were remarkable planes but to suggest the YF22 was somehow inferior to the YF23 is asinine.
The true capabilities of the F22 are still not completely known to the general public even after 20+ years of it being in service.

When a plane(or any object)reaches the speed of sound. Roughly 700 miles an hour(depending on altitude)it breaks the sound barrier causing a sonic boom. That is considered Mach 1 so Mach .75 is 3/4 the speed of sound and Mach 1.2 a little over the speed of sound. I still feel like you should check out the SR-71 Blackbird. It's not used anymore but it's an incredible piece of machinery. It could fly at Mach 3.5 plus(900 ft per second thats faster than an average firearm at the time) at altitudes of 80,000 feet.
You should check out the F-14 Tomcat. I was in the first f-14 squadron VF-1. They have been decommissioned but they were the mother of the twin tail fighter jets of today and was the aircraft used in the Topgun movie.
You should check out the 100 First air Borne, Army Rangers, and the Special Forces Green Barret! I'm 66 and very proud of my father for being a Green Barret. They are badass and not to be messed with. My dad was in the military for 12 years! Covert operations and the best of the best from the US!

I heard the question about what is Mach? Because the speed of sound varies greatly with temperature, air pressure and desity a new way to measure aircraft speed at or near the speed of sound. The Mach number takes all the veriables into account. That is way high speed planes use a Mach Meter to measure speed.
Hi, Fly by wire is using computers as the comtrols for the plane. So if the pilot turns the plane. The amount goes into a computer. and the compute will turn the plane. Its like using a joypad on a computer or gaming console. To play your games.
The fastest plane ever made was the SR-71 Blackbird. Made in the 60s and still the fastest ever. It still holds the record in 2022.

You guy should look at the Grumman A-6 Intruder. It's been retired for years now, but it is the most used jet in combat operation. Everyone that flew it, had nothing but good things to say about it.
I live in Nevada not to far from Nellis Air Force Base. I have seen fighter jets fly past the highway I was driving on. It was pretty amazing. They are loud but in an instant they are gone! It has happened a few times. It is really amazing to witness in person. I don't know what kind they were.

To test the fighting ability of the F22 they put 8 F35’s against 1 F22 now this simulation fight it blew the Air forces top brass’s mind the F22 took out all 8 F35’s without the pilots even knowing they were under attack

I recommend doing a reaction video to a true American hero “Marcus Latrell” a navy seal documentary about one of his missions. They even made a movie called “the lone survivor “ about his experience. There is a 2 part documentary about it on TH-cam, coming from the man himself.
Just for accuracy sake, his last name is Luttrell. I've heard him speak live at Christian Men's Conferences and the dude has an insane story. And Lone Survivor is a great film.

Your F-35 Lighting II's come in 3 versions the A model is an Air Force version and the B is a Marine Corps version which has a Vertical/ Short Take-Off and Landing, while the C model has streghted landing gear with a tailhook for Naval Carrier Landings. That the reasons for the different types in service. While most going to forgiven buyers are the A versions of F-35's.

Trust me, the YF 23 platform hasn’t been scrubbed, or shelved. It’s now probably being further developed as the next generation hypersonic stealth fighter for the USAF.

As a PS, the F15 has a modern variation called the Stealth Eagle. The regular variant is the only combat tested fighter currently in service to have NO KILLS AGAINST in combat. No enemies in combat have been able to kill an Eagle.

Jack Northrop was an amazing person. Watched the documentary on his company he knew the name of every single person that worked in his plant all the way down to the janitors and he would talk to them daily and make them feel just as important as the people build the aircraft. The Grumman corporation hands-down has built the most technologically advanced aircraft in the world. The skunks work division built the SR 71 blackbird and the F-117 Nighthawk and the B2 bomber. They start building a F117 and 1972 and no one knew a thing about it until the gulf war. Our pilots are the best in the world. They have the most training of any other pilots, and most will tell you Even an a less advanced aircraft they can probably beat the opponent. We literally spend millions per pilot by the time they get to the point where they’re in those jets.! As others have said what Mach is but that also changes with altitude temperature and pressure and humidity so Mach is not the same everywhere. The number that you’ve been quoted in the comments is a baseline for mach speed. That would be a good homeschool project for your kids to look up the math to that.
The skunk works is actually Lockheed Martin aviations creation as is the sr71 blackbird f117a nighthawk stealth fighter and u2 spyplane still in operation. These were all developed there during the 60s and mid to late70s and early 80s for the f117a. Lockheed Martin's skunk works also had a program they were working on in 1985 with the us navy to build a stealth catamaran style warship called project seashadow

Thrust vectoring makes the Raptor better in my opinion. The Russians have the SU-57 and it has it. You can do wild, crazy moves in a dog fight with thrust vectoring.

As an American that’s lived both in NZ and Oz about 20 years ago, retired in Texas now, I can only say that you have the most beautiful people and country in the world in my opinion. You might want to educate us US people to the fact that NZ is split into the north island and the south Island because we aren’t that geo smart. Mach is the speed of sound which varies on the height you are flying do to air friction. Which means the closer to the ground you fly the more power you need to keep certain speeds.
The speed of sound (otherwise known as Mach 1) varies with temperature. At sea level on a “standard day,” the temperature is 59°F, and Mach 1 is approximately 761 mph.
You guys should look at videos from the Air Force Pararescue Jumpers, such as their training and the missions.
Mach is a measure of speed based on the speed of sound at various altitudes. The name comes from the 19th century physicist Ernst Mach, who did a lot of research into high speed turbulence and shockwaves.
The reasons the 22 was chosen above the 23 include AOA (angle of attack). The F-22, due to its vector engines, give it an AOA of at least 60 degrees.
I really love the look of this plane I really wish we would have gotten both it and the F-22.
I am fortunate enough to live in Dayton Ohio the home of the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Both the YF 23 and F 22 are on display at the Museum but in different galleries.
Even as a museum piece it's a beautiful aircraft.

The F 15 is one aircraft that you need to checkout, it's so well designed that it's still being upgraded and it could have been turned into a stealth aircraft with very few changes and has the best kill ratio of any fighter in history.
An existing airframe cannot be made truly stealth. The F15 (F21) would have been a completely new airframe designed from the ground up to make it stealth and it would have been every bit as expensive as the F22 and F35.
@@mjc1389 Not necessarily leaps and bounds have been made in RAM or Radar Absorbent Material. Many of the conventional airframes utilized for reduced radar cross-section are notoriously bad for actual flying so in the end its a trade off of maneuverability and speed for stealth hence why the first stealth aircraft were bombers / ground attack and not fighters.
The thing is for a stealth fighter you don't need to reduce the radar cross section to the extent that the enemy cant see you. You just need to reduce it just enough that it slows down the enemy response to you and makes it difficult for radar guided munition to lock on. Fighters don't need to be "True Stealth"
It will eventually get to the point that you no longer need the crazy stealth geometry just better or thicker RAM.
@@happyjohn354 You are missing mjc"s point. The F-15 was not designed from the ground up to be stealth. You can not make an aircraft be stealthy that is not designed to be from the ground up. You can make it be more stealthy but the F-15 will never be as stealthy as the F-22 or the F-35 without a complete redesign. Everything from the engine to the cockpit to the airframe has to be completely redesigned as well as the skin and weapons system.
@@happyjohn354 Until you can apply "thicker RAM" to the jet engine's fan blades the RCS on any current 4th gen fighter from the front and back will not be stealthy!
@@TS-bj8my As I said you don't have to put it on everything just enough of the aircraft to slow down radar tracking and give active and passive radar guided munitions trouble a jet fighter does not need true stealth.
Even if you don't cover things like turbine blades its still good enough to do that hence why slapping ram on existing airframes is a good budget option and why so many countries are experimenting with it.
Trying to make a general purpose fighter that's as stealthy as a F-117 or B2 is a retarded task anyways as in order to remain stealthy it has to carry its weapons internally which severely sacrifices its carry capacity. and shows that the people in charge have more money than sense. Its the Bradly IFV program all over again.
The YF-23 competed with the YF-23 and came out second best. While the '23 was slightly more stealthy the F-22 was the better fighter, better at maneuvering, which is the role the plane competition was intended for. I followed the programs closely (aviation nut here).
Truth, I liked the F-23 more back then just because it looked cooler, but the F-22 was proven the better plane.
You guys should check out the Abrams MBT as well as the history of American tanks. Maybe even check out the history of the US Navy, ships used during WWII up to Modern day such as some of our Battleships, Carriers, Destroyers and even our subs. I would say check out The Fat Electrician as he does videos on everything past and present related to the US Military but he uses a lot of profanity so they would be parent only reactions lol
Northrop merged with Grumman aircraft to form Northrop Grumman systems. They actually are more focused on military and high tech satellites in space but they do make a lot of navigational tech for commercial planes. Their bread and butter are laser systems for all sorts of things. The Lockheed Martin company is their main competitor in most areas but work together on others. Lockheed and Northrop and so many companies are currently collaborating on the trial fission reactor somewhere in Europe to try finding a clean source of energy. That reactor hasn’t even started yet as it’s not even built as the delays just keep mounting. They just test materials and see if it withstands the power if it doesn’t it’s thrown out and a search begins again. They already tested several power coils and no material can handle the heat before it melts it’s just slow finding what they need.
Fission or Fusion? Because fission is just the standard nuclear power we already have.
I remember watching the flight trials between the 2 planes. They televised them on the military channel in the early 90s.
Many in Washington were concerned the F-23 was too advanced. They were sure that some systems could not be maintained or properly understood. It was basically a 5.5 generation fighter.
if a air craft or something is going Mach 1 its going faster then the speed of sound so like mach 1 is 1x the speed of light and so on

If you ever want to see a YF-23, there is one on display (last I heard) at the US Airforce Museum in Dayton, Ohio. It was rescued from the boneyard where it was waiting for disposal. Many other aircraft are on display there as well including the SR-71, XB-70, B-52, F-15, and A-10.
