Ok guys I recommended the t-34 movie to you a couple years ago.that you did and that made me very happy. I wonder, now given the advancements we have, can you out do the slow mo shell and spalling hits from then? On the tanks. Challenge to you.....🤔
Corridor actually had that happen with one of their shots! They explained that they rendered the scene over again, but ONLY the parts that were missing, and ONLY the parts that weren't covered by other scene elements. And then just comped it back in. Crazy!
So, concerning “Guardians”. That movie was kind of a meme when it came out. Not only did it feature horrible acting, a horrible script and subpar effects, it was also basically filmed by a Russian version of Adam Sandler, who mostly directed mediocre comedies, and was quite notorious among the youth and teenagers who surf the Internet. So I wouldn’t call it a “big Russian Avengers movie”. Everyone knew it was going to be bad, and nobody was surprised when it turned out to be bad.
As I know, they rented Nvidia Grid clusters in Moscow for the "Attraction" and they have spent about 3000 hours in total for render purposes (according to the availability calendar). I don't know if it was any single scene or all scenes, but our company was the next in a queue to use this particular cluster and we had to wait a lot.
Most people when seeing a decently cool CG action scene: "Oh that's nice" VFX artists who more or less know their shit : "BROOOO THE RENDER IS ORGASMIC"
Just another Russian passing by. "Guardians" is literally one of the funniest movies i've ever seen. When Sloth punched the bear guy I laughed so hard in the cinema, they almost kicked me out. This is a perfect movie for a "so bad it's good" night, trust me. You can make another one of those, check A Rough Draft/Черновик (2018) with silly cyber matreshkas, Coma/Кома (2020) - it's cheap, but really inventive and cool looking and Black Lightning/Чёрная Молния (2009) which is basicly Spider-Man about an old flying soviet car, there are some really impressive shots. Thanks for the vids.
I don't know if you will like it or not, but do react to some indian movies. Just watch Bahubali 2 first. It is much more crazy than the Russian movies. I don't know if it is going to be impressive or not.
I’m Russian and this “ДЯTIST ЯЭACT” in the thumbnail, I think, I needed, like 4 minutes to understand it, at first I read it as “Datitst yaeact”, I was like, what that even should mean
so, fun fact. in the opening logos for T-34 there is a logo for Gaijin entertainment which is the company who made War Thunder; that focused on more accurate simulation than World of Tanks. which is probably why the 3d models in the movies looked so good
These guys are great, Niko especially is such a good teacher - he really breaks it down and uses physical examples with not a lot of jargon. Part of why I keep coming back to this series.

You guys do such an amazing job at articulating just how much work goes into VFX, its crazy how much processing power and time it can take to make a two minute scene
I was literally watching t-34 yesterday and thought, "I wish Corridor Crew would react to this." And now today they are doing it. You have read my mind!
Panfilov's 28 would have been a better pick, utilizing excellent model work. And what do you know, it was in fact funded by Gaijin. Sad to see SALYUT 7 wasn't represented. it's got absolutely amazing cgi work. On par with Gravity or Ad Astra
I liked this review of effects in Russian movies. I know these movies, and they're actually not good. Attraction is awesome, it's the first is its kind in Russia I think. Yet attraction has really silly characters and story. The rest of movies are 🖓
Niko was like: “At the end of the day, you gotta focus on the story. Nothing here is distracting from a story” If only he knew how shit the plot in most of these is. As a Russian I am embarrassed to say that most contemporary russian movies are utter garbage. Props to the the CGI team. Ah, an intellectual here too :) Yeah, Corridor says how good CGI is, but oh if only they'd known the background of that xD I want every... Wait that's not how it works. Я хочу чтобы все русские залайкали оригинал? собираем пати русских? смотрящих коридор) There we go.
That certainly applies for Guardians, but don't feel embarrassed, its problems weren't any different from those of the DC cinematic universe, for example. Besides, The Flash With Scythes is cooler than most DC or Marvel muppets
9:30 yeah, It is gorgeous animation because Main road post (the studio who did those shots) hired one of the senior animator who has worked at Pixar, Dreamworks, Ubisoft, ILM, Valve etc.
@@darkside4566 Alien ship obviously had a malfunction and a crash and probably needs help but all the humans act like if aliens were openly agressive and were trying to conquer them.
I watched T-34 and the level of detail in the shells is just... Mindblowing. You see how the metal of the tanks twist outwards when hit with an AP shell. Amazing
It may have been a coincidence because there's somehow quite a lot of stock footage from the Russian-speaking countries on the internet. Also, it appears to be ukrainian keyboard. I assume that the stock footage is leagues cheaper to produce on (not in) the US-centered ukraine, so that's what the stock footage companies are going with.
You are right. This looks like a Ukranian keyboard. I did not realize that Ukraninan keyboards had English, Russian, and Ukranian characters ( The RU just popped out).
Just a fact. A tank round travels so hard that passing by humans would rupture organs. But of course there’s the explosive charge so there isn’t enough time to see that.
@@elijahhernandez7033 it's what the thumbnail spells in Cyrillic, if you happen to actually know how to read it. If you aren't familiar with Cyrillic, your brain tries to pronounce it in a language you do know, so it's this "nifty" trick that English speakers use, while native speakers often make fun of it.
There were about 25 hours just to Render 1 frame on a supercomputer of Moskow science academy for destruction shot. Proud to know some of the guys involved %)
T-34 is one of my favorite films (due to the crazy slo-mo stuff(and that I'm a tank nerd)). it was awesome to see these guys explain, and shine some lights on the movie.
"The demo reel took longer to render than the actual final shot" - gotta be the biggest flex when breaking down the process and showing how it works takes longer than actually letting the process run.
12:14 I love that shot of the dust and debris from the building to the right, being carried away and slung around the spacecraft by those gyroscopic looking rings, shortly after impact.. It almost reminds of a tornado destroying something..
I am Russian and I am really glad to see you are making the review of Russians CGI, now seems like we are living in the same universe hehe Btw dont youthink that a guardians villain looks like a child who just crapped his nickers? P.S. The main problem of that kinda films is a plot...well its bad...pretty bad
@@danielbear3802the first one is just called t34, plot is pretty alright , but the movie itself is very good, if you like historical movies, watch it! The alien ship one is called 'attraction' it would be a good Hollywood movie, but since I don't expect much from Russian Sci-Fi, so it is great for a non American Sci-Fi film! (I'm saying it that way, since Hollywood imo. Has the best scifi films)
"A plot" - 95% of times it is better when plot does not exist at all, just ask Badcomedian. P.S. I can't stand our (russian) *labeled* "based on real story" movies. At least we sometimes can produce special effects that looks ok even by Hollywood standards.
I really love that you guys talk about "Guardians" which is one of my all time fav super-hero movies and also I love how you talk about the 1998 "Godzilla" movie in episode 17 which is one I really enjoy watching.
Did anybody notice that when the man fully transforms into a bear his pants just tear down but still when he goes back being human, he still has his pants untouched not even a single wrinkle or cuts..
For me, as a person who's main language is russian, it soo hard for me to read those mixed russian-english signs Like, instead of reading "Vfx artists react" i read "Vfhe dyatists yaedst"
As a child i lived in kasachsan, i understand the russian language and i read the same thing, finally i understand.. S ruskami bukwami po angliskij pisat 😄
One of my classmates speaks Russian and taught me how to read Cyrillic. Sometimes we write things in "fake Russian" and then read it properly. Let's say we did this with the name Ryan. Fake Russian: Яуаи Actual reading (as you know): Yauai This results in some funny changes with the right names. Especially if there's an N, A, R or H, since those are common and have the closest matching symbols.
_Corridor:_ write english words using cyrillic-like symbols _People who can read Russian:_ *"VFX DYATISTS YAEDST"* P. S. Also, no idea why they used russian D instead of A which in russian looks similar to english A. Upd. Check out the "Coma" movie's vfx. That's kinda interesting
Also "ARTIST" on russian sounds and writes similiar - "АРТИСТ" - because it's foreign word. "REACT" is in same manner - "REACTION" - "РЕАКЦИЯ"(REACTCIYA) or "REACT" - "РЕАГИРУЮТ"(REAHGIRYUUT).
To make it more Russian? I mean, some letters are so similar to English letters. Changing A (cyrillic) for A (English) literally changes nothing, different from И vs N, but then you talk about ACTUALLY USING CYRILLIC, which would defeat the purpose of making any thumbnail...
@@Jackrost01 Similar my ass. The only letters similar to English are A and T. Pronunciations, yes, but looks nothing like English, if your point was "use of cyrillic in an English thumbnail"
@@NothingXemnas it would be cool if they use actually Cyrillic (just transliterate words). It will be clear to everyone (or to majority) what they mean by "VFX АРТИСТС РЕАКТ"
It goes without saying on top of the technical knowledge and information we learn from these videos, the Corridor Crew also has the most enjoyable chemistry and seamless communication to glean from for a creative bunch of nerds and geeks.
At least you did it guys! Please make it series for Russian VFX just like with Bollywood! And personal BIG thank you to Speak No Evil for the tip and making this episode exist! Спасибо братан! And of course thank You guys, keep up the good work!

Hey from Russia :) Just a regular VFX/GameDev guy here. Just wanted to point out that there is a ton of really great and talanted VFX artists in Russia you probably haven't even heard of. This class of FX is already a mainstream level in russian movies, for many years now. Since the first wave of Bekmambetov films (strongly recommend you to watch the "Night Watch" and "Day Watch" movies considering their date of release and the fact they were THE first russian movies of this world-class level). However, the story/direction in our movies is quite shitty, that's true. But graphics sometimes is at the same level as Hollywood masterpieces, with just a fraction of their budget. (A good example is "August, 8" - with a tank character definitely cosplaying some transformers movie) The reason for that is the widespread familiarity with the greatest software packages, like Houdini and Nuke. Using them, achieveing this level of detail/realism you were amazed by, is literally piece of cake. Even with small artist teams and really, REALLY limited budgets. P.S.: here in Russia we love Marvel movies. Our "Guardians" is a joke compared to that, we all know that ;)
@@gifgoldblum7940 and where are you from? It's so nice to know anyone else in the world (other then russians) also saw those movies. imho, the Bekmambetov's "... watch" films are both real masterpieces from VFX standpoint. I might be biased, but watching their making-ofs really blew my ming. Achieving THAT level of quality with THAT level of budget... it's just... magic. All the people who worked on VFX for those movies are just geniuses. Unfortunately, there was no progress in later Bekmambetov's movies in any field other than VFX. So sad 🙁
I'm from and in Australia. I saw Day Watch in the cinema and raved to everyone about the subtitles, I'd never seen anything like it before, they added such an impact to what was happening. I'm absolutely going to check out the "makings of" on your recommendation, they sound super interesting! I also share your opinion of Guardians, the character exposition in particular was so forced it was painful.
@ThyPeasantSlayer at least it doesnt deflect a Tiger round at point-blank range on the sides (and the tank has to aim for weakspots on the enemy vehicles)
Okay, as a russian i can say that: 1)T-34 is a wierd movie with really good CG, but messed up writing. And historical facts were just thrown out of window. Plot twist at the end just too bad 2)Guardians just bad movie, that ment to be our answer to Avengers, but completely destroyed any hope in good superhero based movie from Russia. I mean design of those regular troopers is just pilots from Titanfall wtf 3)Attraction quite interesting movie with odd writing, but at least CG looks really good. Those effects were made by studio called Main Road Post, some of their last works are impressive. Its almost a shame that while CG only improving with each year, writing is... questionable oh and dont forget 4) in Russia, movies watching you
Since you're reacting to Russian CGI, you should check out the "Nightwatch" series. As far as i can tell they were sort of the first "hey look, we can do CGI too" Russian movies
Another thing about iron fury, most of the tank scenes had to be cg because of the fact that there aren’t many of the German tanks left and all of the scenes featuring panthers had to be cg because there is only two working panthers in the world and if you watch it knowing that the cg becomes even more impressive
@@Evaunit98 i mean every single tank has been like that besides fury. Every single tank in band of brothers is a t54 remodeled and most viewers dont know shit about ww2 german tanks
using other tanks and just painting german decals on them or sticking a bunch of boxes on them is done often, mainly for money's sake. but to anyone with even a limited understanding of the vehicles its a "visual nuisance" and it rarely looks good.
@@yowtfputthemaskbackon9202 They are now so clever to use PZ IV H lookalikes instead of "Tigers" or "Panthers" as its sideskirts hide most of the Russian tank wheels.
"How many computer hours would you guess it took to simulate this?" Bruh, those Russians probably just hacked into NASA for like 3 seconds and did it then.

It may have been a coincidence because there's somehow quite a lot of stock footage from the Russian-speaking countries on the internet. Also, it appears to be ukrainian keyboard. Who asked doe?
One of my classmates speaks Russian and taught me how to read Cyrillic. Sometimes we write things in "fake Russian" and then read it properly.
Let's say we did this with the name Ryan.
Fake Russian: Яуаи
Actual reading (as you know): Yauai
This results in some funny changes with the right names. Especially if there's an N, A, R or H, since those are common and have the closest matching symbols.
anyone who knows the alphabet (just by having studied it) feels the same.
_Corridor:_ write english words using cyrillic-like symbols
_People who can read Russian:_ *"VFX DYATISTS YAEDST"*
This is what I came to talk about
To make it more Russian? I mean, some letters are so similar to English letters. Changing A (cyrillic) for A (English) literally changes nothing, different from И vs N, but then you talk about ACTUALLY USING CYRILLIC, which would defeat the purpose of making any thumbnail...
@@Jackrost01
Similar my ass.

The 9:30 close-up on the addidas trainers REALLY sold this as a Russian film 😂
Hey from Russia :)
Just a regular VFX/GameDev guy here.
(A good example is "August, 8" - with a tank character definitely cosplaying some transformers movie)
The reason for that is the widespread familiarity with the greatest software packages, like Houdini and Nuke. Using them, achieveing this level of detail/realism you were amazed by, is literally piece of cake. Even with small artist teams and really, REALLY limited budgets.
P.S.: here in Russia we love Marvel movies. Our "Guardians" is a joke compared to that, we all know that ;)
Oh MAN i freaking LOVE Nightwatch and Daywatch. I'm super cut about the animated subtitles not being on the DVD and Bluray releases.
‘Let’s look at a Russian film called ‘T-34’
‘Isn’t that a calculator?’
*cries in tank*
@ThyPeasantSlayer at least it doesnt deflect a Tiger round at point-blank range on the sides (and the tank has to aim for weakspots on the enemy vehicles)
Okay, as a russian i can say that:
1)T-34 is a wierd movie with really good CG, but messed up writing. And historical facts were just thrown out of window. Plot twist at the end just too bad
2)Guardians just bad movie, that ment to be our answer to Avengers, but completely destroyed any hope in good superhero based movie from Russia. I mean design of those regular troopers is just pilots from Titanfall wtf
3)Attraction quite interesting movie with odd writing, but at least CG looks really good. Those effects were made by studio called Main Road Post, some of their last works are impressive. Its almost a shame that while CG only improving with each year, writing is... questionable
oh and dont forget
