It is your Aunt Grace, Leotyne Price, Marian Anderson, and Kathleen Battle that inspired me take opera voice lessons and fortified my love of opera. To see and hear your Aunt and the other Black Female Opera singers brought and still brings great joy to my heart. 🥰
I really love her voice!!!!!! The first time I saw the play was with her and i fall in love!!!! Now, it is no more in youtube... What kind of world is this!!!
Anubhab Chatterjee Joan Sutherland never sang Carmen (fortunately I might add, even speaking as a die-hard fan. she didn't have the creamy, sultry, delicious lower register necessary to pull it off)
+Jason Black Actually, that's not quite correct. Sutherland sang as a dramatic coloratura, but her physiologic voice type was DRAMATIC MEZZO. She actually had quite a dark and rich lower register (check out her Voi che sapete), with no lower head-midrange break. However, for obvious reasons she did not develop this part of her voice, so it never had much compression or brilliance to it. But yes, her Carmen would have been horrific, for temperament mis-match alone!
with all due respect, that's ridiculous. Sutherland is clearly most comfortable at the top of the soprano range. she is about as mezzo as Cher is coloratura soprano
Congrats to your wonderful auntie!! one of the best Carmens ever!! :-) the other 2 in considerations in my opinion are Marilyn Horne and Elena Obrastzova. Greetings from Budapest! :-)
I've loved her voice since I was a child and unfortunately had the opportunity to hear her live, which must be unforgettable. The record I played over and over was of de Falla songs. I haven't seen any of them on line yet.....does anyone have any to post???? please!!!!!!
My first opera was Bumbry in Carmen in SF in 1967... she was perfection... I was kinda disappointed years later to read her comments that "... Carmen is the same sickness for the Black Mezzo that Aida is for the Black soprano." Alas.
Totally agree. And furthermore the whole racial aspect of it really had me saying wow I'd love to hear more about this courageous, beautiful, amazing woman and singer. They do do that every year to one person but it never gets easier to watch one person get snubbed while another gets so much time. I thought maybe a girl's choir singing this little light of mine would have taken what? 4 mins more? ah well. I never heard of Grace Bumbry before tonight so it's a good thing for me she was on!!
Corelli really was the Jose for the ages. One tends to get so wrapped up with his scenes with Carmen that one forgets his sweet scenes with his Michaela, but his work with Mirella Freni can make you really hate Carmen for what she did to them. :)
wow. she is amazing. i wish the kennedy honor thing would have lasted a bit longer. Springsteen got 1/2 hour and she only got about 12 mins but they do that every year to somebody
yeah, that's why she doesn't have to open her mouth the way she would if she were actually singing. That's what I meant. I know sometimes they sing while acting, which visually makes more sense to me. but whatever, this was a really good version.
@intelegentable Actually, I find that even in post-60's voice, her coloratura was still solid. The color of her voice was darker- the chest tones supreme!- but her high notes were often wobbly, cringe-worthy. If you wished she'd done "Carmen" on film, I wish she'd recorded Baroque- Handel would have loved her!- or Bizet's piano & voice, or Italian art songs... I hurt thinking about the many possibilities that would have been easy for Callas!
Excellent performance. I bet her tickets were sold out... This is what people wanted to see, but Marketing took over. We will market this instead. And so there were many things that changed thanks to what they were marketing!
I love Springsteen, but the sheer talent of those who sing opera should have been offered at least one more piece. Ms. Bumbry's segment ended much too abruptly.
Don't even bother with this chick. I looked at her profile and she picks fights on all the videos. She likes the attention since I'm sure she doesn't get any in real life.
I enjoy all aspects of music and singing. But when a female singers are producing such ringing, brilliant and commanding high notes, it thrills me most. Just the acoustic phenomenon itself gives me chills.
She is wonderful, maybe the best Carmen, but how is it possible to forget to mention the...."detail" that the conductor was Herbert von Karajan and the orchestra was the Vienna Philharmonic?!?
RIP! She was great, will always be remembered.
It's amazing how this is actually my Aunt Grace!!! :) I'm so honored!
She is amazing
Omg your aunt is an opera legend and i love her😊
Wow! She is a legend ! A remarkable singer who could do anything she wants. Phenomenal and unique God send talent, thank you for those performances!
Your Auntie Is Beast Mode & Bombshell! Yassssssssssssssssssss! 🎼🥰👏🏿👏🏾👏🏻👏🏾👏🏿👏🏾👏🏻👏🏾👏🏿👏🏾👏🏻👏🏾👏🏿👏🏾👏🏻👏🏾👏🏿👏🏾👏🏻👏🏾👏🏿👏🏾👏🏻👏🏾👏🏿👏🏾👏🏻👏🏾👏🏿🥰🥰🥰🥰

She has a beautiful voice, so effortless. Only found her fairly recently
She is a beautiful women. she has an incredible vocal strength and color and she is very sensitive to music
What a wonderful Carmen and Jose, both vocally and visually.
It's from Salzburg Festival, 1966, under H. von Karajan's baton. Jon Vickers, Mirella Freni and Justino Diaz. An outstanding performance.
Thank you, Mama Grace. You will be missed and cherished always. 🎼🎶🥀🎶💔
She was Callas with a sense of humor, so to speak. The Carmen of Carmens.
No. She sings much better then Callas.
yes she was and i saw her do this live as a young boy
RIP Amazing Grace.
There's some great cosmic injustice in someone being so talented AND so beautiful. Harrumph.
This is awesome. I even like the tenor!
I really love her voice!!!!!!
The first time I saw the play was with her and i fall in love!!!!
Now, it is no more in youtube...
What kind of world is this!!!
the best carmen I've seen and heard for now) ♥
Maria callas is the best. So is joan sutherland. Have u forgotten them

+Anubhab Chatterjee the can be one of the greatest but I was sayng about carmen - not singer...
Its amazing how comfortable she is lying down and sitting while singing the way she did! Wow! Going from Mezzo to Soprano was a verry wise choice!
A unique Carmen.Splendid.
What a wonderful voice! So powerful, so beautiful!!! I'm ... astonished! Sublime!
She is SUCH a perfect Carmen!!
she is lovely and her french is very very good for an anglophone!! i do not speak about her voice!.. just beautifull and very classy!!
wow - she was really beautiful
Gorgeous in every way!
i like the dancing part!!
Perfect!!!
OBSESSSSED
Spellbindingly beautiful! she takes musical pleasure to a diferent level.
Oh Grace I love you.
I just saw her a mintes ago on the arts channel and I search for her inmediatly....
außergewöhnliche Stimme, groß und schön. Es klingt vollkommen frei. Ich bin begeistert.
She came by my school yesterday to critique my colleagues singing and it was a very interesting experience.
THAT IS REAL CARMEN! One and only GRACE BUMBRY!
O voce mare, lejera!! Interpretare superba! Intr`un cuvant MINUNAT!
Damn that voice
She's my auntie
Congrats to your wonderful auntie!! one of the best Carmens ever!! :-) the other 2 in considerations in my opinion are Marilyn Horne and Elena Obrastzova. Greetings from Budapest! :-)

Holy Macaroni! Forreals?!
She’s so friggin sexy in this role, as much as her voice is!

She's fucking amazing!

Casal belíssimo ❤
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! GREAT!!!
Bela canção...voz fantástica, incrível........
I've loved her voice since I was a child and unfortunately had the opportunity to hear her live, which must be unforgettable. The record I played over and over was of de Falla songs. I haven't seen any of them on line yet.....does anyone have any to post???? please!!!!!!
If Karajan WAS conducting, that explains the deadly tempo. GOD. But it's nice to hear her singing well, I never heard her sing well even once.
My first opera was Bumbry in Carmen in SF in 1967... she was perfection... I was kinda disappointed years later to read her comments that "... Carmen is the same sickness for the Black Mezzo that Aida is for the Black soprano." Alas.
Gran Mezzo!

Pinterest brought me here. Sheesh she was so talented and beautiful
addio grandissima.
Corelli really was the Jose for the ages. One tends to get so wrapped up with his scenes with Carmen that one forgets his sweet scenes with his Michaela, but his work with Mirella Freni can make you really hate Carmen for what she did to them. :)
Increíblemente seductora y salvaje!!!! Bravisimaaaaaaaaa Grace!!!!
i like it but it feels so slow, it's like i'm yearning for just a little more tempo
still good though

th-cam.com/video/DkADJFzJW28/w-d-xo.html
Muy buena!!!!!
yes, besides her voice and performance, in contrast to some other singers, she is pretty enough for this role and she also looks somewhat Spanish.
RIP
BRAVA! :) :)
Bravo
Grace, I just want to take the time to wish you a Happy Birthday today. I hope that you can come to South Carolina and perform sometime.
qqéé mezzo0oso0oprano0o dramattiiica!!!!!!!!!! =O geeneeaaL!!! =')
wow. she is amazing. i wish the kennedy honor thing would have lasted a bit longer. Springsteen got 1/2 hour and she only got about 12 mins but they do that every year to somebody

i want to see some one rendering carmen vs esmerelda in this life time!
Sound like a bird singing to my ears ❤
4 min realization
+Cristhian Julian Garcia Santiago Shea actually a falcon (the darkest type of soprano)...even she has confirmed this in interviews!
is this a film?
@intelegentable Actually, I find that even in post-60's voice, her coloratura was still solid. I love Grace's wigs!!! Too bad her real hair is short!!!
Pardon my french ...But this is Fucking Awesome !!!!!
Excellent performance. I bet her tickets were sold out... This is what people wanted to see, but Marketing took over. We will market this instead. And so there were many things that changed thanks to what they were marketing!
$$$$
to a trained sci-fi geeks this looks alot like uhura and Quentin Tarantino singing opera ^^
Hay ciertos problemas de afinación, no?
I love Springsteen, but the sheer talent of those who sing opera should have been offered at least one more piece. Ms. Bumbry's segment ended much too abruptly.
...cool and playful, not as a sluttish maneater. Mmm..I really agree with you`~~
Sounds like soprano
че
her dress doesn't really look that nice. the hair might be a bit nicer than it should be, though.
I can't understand a word she's singing, but she's speaking my language, if you know what I'm sayin'.
You'd think they'd have capable diction coaches
Her voice is beautiful, but her pronunciation of this terrific French libretto is totaly wrong.
che significa quel no,
Don't even bother with this chick. I looked at her profile and she picks fights on all the videos. She likes the attention since I'm sure she doesn't get any in real life.
No.
@suedeltica Funny, I love her as Carmen, but she is definitely not pretty to look at, she moves well, though.
Good heavens, what gorgeous glowing power and color, depth and texture and such a radiant personality. My oh my mi manca il fiato.
the greatest carmen ever
Grace Bumbry. I love her more each time I listen. She is giving such a nuanced performance that is rarely seen in opera. Quite amazing
She makes it look so darn easy. A great great singer!
@isabellanova007 There were no black people? You mean we black people came into existence around 1900? I'm dying laughing over here.
Her voice is amazing. The acting is amazing. Amazing Grace.
Elle porte si bien son prenom ! Merveilleux !
The young Grace Bumbry in great voice - a magical Carmen!
i saw it live it was magical
I enjoy all aspects of music and singing. But when a female singers are producing such ringing, brilliant and commanding high notes, it thrills me most. Just the acoustic phenomenon itself gives me chills.
Rest in peace Queen 😢 ❤👑😇🙏🏻
She's unreal 😍 👏🏾 🥹 Incredible performance. Effortless!
She temporarily converted a lot of gay men.
She is wonderful, maybe the best Carmen, but how is it possible to forget to mention the...."detail" that the conductor was Herbert von Karajan and the orchestra was the Vienna Philharmonic?!?
