I have heard Grace more than 40 years ago in Vilnius Opera. She has performed G.Verdi Aida and Amneris in the order of 2 days. It was unforgettable as UNFORGETTABLE SHE IS!
It is fine to dislike a singer, his/her voice, etc... But being disrespectful is a reflection of your poor character. Sometimes it's better to keep your mouth closed and hide the fact that you're a fool rather open your mouth (in this case putting fingers to keypad) and removing all doubt.
Ten years later I can agree. Whenever I see a performance I don't like, I quietly leave through the back door and if I can't say something positive I'll say nothing at all.
I think she is naturally a mezzo with soprano range, her voice is quite robust to be a natural soprano, but I might b wrong. I think she is a natural mezzo
HAH! Show 'em how it's done, Mama Grace! That voice was utterly burnished and voluminous, and she pulled that climax back to a silvery pianissimo. UH! I WANNA CRY! 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
The first opera I ever attended was a performance of "Carmen" in San Franciso, in 1967. Bumbry as Carmen. What an introduction to opera!!! What a group of singers we had through the sixities and seventies. It was a great time for an opera fan and a fan of the human voice, and what it could do, to be alive.
@Carl Spelvin She was great in "Carmen". You are right. A wonderful excelent performance. Grace Bumbry beautiful woman, great performer. Beautiful voice.
All of these people who say that she sounds terrible should get their ears checked. Im an accomplished singer and I can tell you she is by far not terrible. If she doesnt tickle your fancy then thats understandable but dont discount the talent of a woman who has sang soprano at the Met, Covent Garden and La Scala...thanx
Maravillosa🎉❤ Hoy me entero de su partida, donde pertenece: a las estrellas y más allá. Ya quisieran estrellas actuales ese Bb en PPPPP . BRAAAAAVAAAAAAAAA. RIP
A 55 years old mezzo singing a soprano aria... and il's perfect ! In an other video, she sings with the same quality Isolde's death at the age of ...67 !
@@lougomes2912 She is a Mezzo-Soprano. She said so herself in an interview that her voice is placed in the Mezzo tessitura for sure, but the voice went into that direction (Soprano) during her career and she followed. If one knows the voice well, then it is clear and obvious that Bumbry is rooted as a Mezzo.
@@baritoneblazzin1965 She said her voice started as a mezzo and evolved into the direction of a soprano, which makes her a soprano, for most part of her career. If you know the three tenors you know one of them was naturally a baritone whose training led him into being a tenor.
@@lougomes2912 of course, which is why I said that Bumbry is rooted as a Mezzo...she ended her career as a Mezzo. Speaking for myself, I am rooted as a Baritone until the voice progressed up towards the tenor fach and I am now singing in the tenor fach- and will probably end my singing journey as a Baritone if such 😉
I started laughing when I heard her high note. she sounded a lot like a soprano in her B5. the quality of her voice is unbelievable for a Mezzo-Soprano. it makes you wonder whether or not she truly was a soprano. no wonder she considered herself as such. I heard dramatic soprano from start to finish with a touch of Maria Callas in her B5. amazing interpretation
Sonny Italiano I didn't laugh, but Bumbry was really never a soprano. I admire her dedication, but was never a fan of the voice and same for Callas, admired the acting, but the voice...meh. Bumbry's upper range is consistently unwieldy, out of tune, and lacks beauty. And although in this aria she attempts a subito piano after the high note, she takes a huge breath before, breaking the musical beauty of the line. Shirley Verrett was able, vocally, dramatically and artistically to manage a career in both mezzo and some soprano roles, including Wagner, not easy to do. Listen to Verrett's Vissi and marvel at both her acting and singing artistry.
sopranos and mezzos only differ by a semi-tone but the tell tale sign of a mezzo soprano or underdeveloped soprano is the high notes..youd expect a natural soprano to sound bright, rounded, warm, easy on the Bflat which even isnt all that high for a soprano. The Bbflat sounds like its at the top of her range...theres a ceiling to where the spin sounds stuck and forced. Bumbry was no soprano
The snobbery and outdoing of each other -You opera buffs -makes me 😊 smile All there is to say really: I like the singing Or. I don’t like the singing It sits badly in my head and/or ear. All Art is exclusively personal. It speaks to your soul or it doesn’t. I wouldn’t know what a B flat is if it bit me, but I know if an artist is phoney or off centre.
A huge fan...my favorite mezzo of all time...I love her rich low tones...but she is not the soprano of my dreams. There is a weight to her voice even here, that while it makes her Carmen, Eboli, and especially Amneris untouchable, it does not allow a true soprano floating tone- even when she nobly attempts it. Still- I adore her incredible and distinguished voice.... So happy I got to hear her Amneris live!
What a beautiful voice. RIP and condolences to Grace's family and friends.
R. I. P. It is so sad that we lost this wonderful voice 😪
….but yet we able to listen to her right now and I am sure many will never forget her if they had a chance to attend one of the performances with her.
Rest in Peace ❤️ revisiting a lot of her recordings now.

Another one of the world's greatest has left the stage , this time for good . RIP .....One of if not , G.O.A.T

No doubt!😮
TEARS! Especially after listening and watching her journey with this aria. Her countenance is deeply moving...
Did she speak on this aria?
Thrilling performance by a powerful soprano
sung with great passion and intelligence. Thanks
for posting this. Beautiful.
+jeh500 To me we still hear great Lotte Lehmann was her mentor. :)
no, dramatic mezzo (or dramatic soprano)
@@mynameissurya19 um no she's a Soprano

Have listened to many sing Vissi d’Arte, but Ms Bumbry is the most sublime!
Her hair is perfectly blended, beautiful ❤️
Great all around, but her pianissimo after the climax was just exquisite!
+Lammy4ever7 Fully agree with you!
Indeed! I've listened to this at least 100 times just to hear that exquisite pianissimo again. It's as if a butterfly could sing.
Agreee!! Bravaaa!!!
She went full on Caballe with that note. Fantastic!
exactly
Thank you, GRACE BUMBRY for doing your part to help tame mankind with your gift and talent. Your legacy is secured.

C'est une femme si élégante. Quelle belle voix.
Beautiful beyond what words can convey
A spiritual experience
Her high pianissimo is magnificent. What a voice and real class act. She has a wonderful stage manner too

Maria Callas no es una soprano Dramática, Verdaderas sopranos Dramáticas que cantaron esta parte del aria son Nilsson, Ponselle y Turner.
Wonderful
Magnificent!!!
Just Beautiful nothing more to say :-)
such beautiful, floating pianissimi high A flat-G -at about 2:31 - add such expressive depth to a lovely performance...

@K J he made perfect sense to me. sopranos float...she floated the Ab5 but the Bb5 was screamed
Que importa ser mezzo, se consegue cantar árias de soprano.? Belissima voz e interpretação.
Del Monaco era tenor e cantou ária de barítono.
Absolutely Divine!!! ❤️
Love it.
A true Artist and Diva❤️❤️❤️
Wonderful!!!!!!!!!
Very wise to take breath as often as possible and to make the climax short, so she has enough power for the long diminuendo in the end!
Just awesooooome!
Grazie
PLEASE, anyone listening to this and wondering... WHY?
do go back to her recordings from the 1960s.
she was spectacular.
you are crazy, she is excellente!
Loves it
