connect bottled water to the fridge for ice and drinking

  • This is my life journey documentation but I decided to share the video with y'all.
    What would you do if the fridge is too far from the waterline? It's difficult to cut the wall open and make the connection. A better solution is to use a localized pump. Most importantly, I don't drink tap water and thus I want my ice maker and water to come out from the distilled water. In this video, I talked a bit about the history and the process of hooking up the waterline to the new fridge.

      +William Yang .....No problem. Mine is still working great! Hopefully, the pump will last as long as the fridge itself. :-)

  • @EmissaryZephyr
    @EmissaryZephyr 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I'm agreeing with William Yang --- you are a genius! I have the same issue: the fridge is approximately 15 feet away from a water source with two brick walls dissecting the space.
    I've been purchasing bags of ice for the past two years so that I'd have ice in the bin without wasting the limited amount of space in the freezer with ice trays.
    After watching only two of your vids and gazing at the rest of your collection of How-To vids, I've determined that you are indeed a Renaissance Man!
    Your topics are timely and, for me especially, incredibly topical.
    Thanks!

      +The Emissary .....Thanks for the kind words. The human body consists of over 80% liquid and mostly water. Thus, water is an essential source to our survival and good health. At $150, the pump might be out of reach to a lot of countries. Thus, the reason I want to re-design this pump at more affordable cost but with the same functionalities and reliabilities.

      the problem with $20 pump is not BPA-free, phthalate free and not enough psi to do the job. moreover, it has no sensor for water pressure. the circuit built for the pump used in the video cost more due to R&D and if you analyze the product parts and components, it's definitely worth more than $20.

  • @josephobable

    I use gravity in my workshop to supply my fridge ice maker. I have a vented 5 gallon jug on a shelf about a foot higher than the fridge, vented thru an air filter and using 5/8" tubing inplace of 1/4". To correct for lower water pressure, I extended the contact strip in the ice maker timer that opens the water valve nearly tripling the amount of time the valve allows water to fill the tray. Problem solved... Great video!

    • @mariangulo4457
      @mariangulo4457 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      you did it without a pump? How did you know how tall does the gallon jug must be to correct lower pressure?? I really need some help

    • @josephobable
      @josephobable 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mariangulo4457 I started with the jug sitting on top of the fridge and that is fine. The things I did to compensate for water pressure were 1) gravity, the water jug is the highest component. 2) decrease resistance to water flow by replacing the 1/4" water line with 1/2" clear plastic tubing, which has a 3/8" opening and fits right over the threaded fitting on the water solenoid valve and all other water line fittings in the hook up. 3) I relocated the water valve from the bottom of the fridge to the top. It's just held on by 2 sheet metal screws so it's easy to move, but the 2 wires controlling the valve have to be extended to reach the top of the fridge also. This puts the valve below the jug of water but above the water inlet into the ice maker making the shortest route all 3 steps are maximizing flow. 4) With the above three steps you can make ice. My Whirlpool ice maker made full sized, but mostly hollow cubes with this set-up. The cube size adjustment on the ice maker is controlling how long the water valve stays open allowing water to fill the tray. At it's maximum setting I got the hollow cubes, so I knew I had to increase the time the valve stayed open to get normal ice cubes. The way I modified the ice maker to achieve this is simple, but requires a little DIY tinkering skill, but as said befor, you can still get pretty good ice just using steps 1-3.

      Tl;drThe fridge has valves to prevent leaks from being under constant pressure.
      The way plumbing in a house works is that you have a tank that holds pressure from the pump, the pressure in the tank provides water pressure to the house. with a fridge(and anything else connected to the plumbing)it’s always under pressure from the water supply. (This example is for a single house disconnected from the city water supply)

      doesn't hurt to filter it again, right? think about your coffee maker. you can put one filter or 2 filter or 3 filter. doesn't matter. if one filter failed, at least your other filter still works!! if you buy the filtered water, you HOPE they changed their filter regularly, right? the keyword here is HOPE. what if they didn't change filter that one time when you purchased the water? is there a way you can tell? 99.9999% you won't know!! thus, having your own filter is a double protection policy. :-)

    @dumbCupYou need to check your fridge specs. Usually, the minimum requirement is about 30 PSI but double check your fridge to be certain. You just need to understand fluid dynamics.If you want to see the progress of my new design, you can follow me on Twitter. Because the problem that I have where I live, there is no constant water service, so I was planing to buy like a 15 gallons bottle and make the water dispenser installation, but now I'm curious you mentioned your fridge required a 30psi. I'm buying a whirlpool wrs586fldb. So do you think I must buy a water pump or just by putting a bottle higher than my fridge would be enough? Thanks again

  • @GMoney-B
    @GMoney-B 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would totally go with this solution but that pump being $150 is complete madness. I am looking for a solution since I live in a townhouse and don't want to drill holes in cabinets going from my kitchen sink to the fridge and making it discrete.

    • @sokhaDotCom
      @sokhaDotCom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      calculate for a long term returns; $150 used it for 10 yrs. you spent about $1.25 per month. less than a nickel a day. so, the question becomes...... is the drinking water important enough to spend a nickel a day? if you buy a quality product, it will last a long time.

    • @GMoney-B
      @GMoney-B 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sokhaDotCom True. I have a water filter on my faucet though and so the alternative option to this jug feature is running a water hose from under my sink to my fridge, or getting a couple more ice cube trays. I think I might just go with the ice cube trays also because we are somewhat limited on space, so that is something else for me to consider if I want to reduce walking space in my kitchen. Thank you for your input and advice. :)
