This song is about Jesus an Judas, sung from the perspective of Judas.

@@leonh.kalayjian6556, it’s about Judas’s betrayal of Jesus, yes U2 stated that.
      “Drank the wine”
      “I spiked your drink”
“Everybody was having a good time, except you”
      “In the garden”
“I kissed your lips and broke your heart”
“You were talking about the end of the world”
“You said you’d wait, until the end of the world”
All that is and more is pretty clear. The whole lip versus cheek thing doesn’t necessarily matter. It adds some mystery to the song for those who don’t know their Bible. Given it’s from Judas’s perspective, the events you would assume wouldn’t be exact. So in U2’s defense, it sorta works.

I think 'Achtung Baby' is one of those landmark albums. I think it represents a new era and that U2 are showing through their music and through the amazing production and sound that the 80s are well and truly over. I think it's U2's most progressive album as well as it manages to incorporate electronica, early house and experimental industrial sampling to name but a few of the myriad of influences on display. I think it's no coincidence that it arrived the same year as albums like Primal Scream's 'Screamadelica' as that was similarly a real watershed album that was a complete departure from the majority of 80s mainstream music.
I also like the fact that it was the first single from Achtung Baby - "The Fly" that knocked Bryan Adams from his marathon stay at Number 1 in the UK charts. "Everything I Do" is a very typical 80s power ballad but "The Fly" couldn't be more different and felt very fresh and new in comparison. Even though it was probably derivative of a lot of underground industrial and dance music that didn't normally see the light of day in the mainstream pop charts.
"Until the End of the World" is a great track as I think it shows Bono at his lyrical best. Musically it's very tight as well.

The “chemistry” of this band makes sense. They all met in high school and formed the band U2. The drummer was only age 14 at the time. The same four guys are the band ever since. 40+ years. They truly know, love and respect each other-you can hear it in the music.

U2 has a pretty diverse catalog. You'll eventually experience a band that is willing to take chances. There is so, so much to explore.

It's about the events leading up to The Passion - Judas' betrayal of Christ. It's basically about the chaos in Judas' head between the time of the betrayal in the garden - Judas told the Roman soldiers that he would let them know who to arrest by kissing that man, and that man was Jesus - and his own suicide by hanging. Thus the lines "In the garden you were playing the tart / I kissed your lips and broke your heart". Heavy stuff, really.

The song produced by Bono describes the Judas-Jesus scenario from the Bible , from Judas’ perspective. Its a fascinating song which when heard in the live version is incredible.

A live version of this is song is just pure theatre, Bono playing the evil entity and the ensuing battle with Edge's guitar representing the good. Bono eventually being banished back to hell by Edge's guitar

It’s about Jesus and Judas. The song is sung from the perspective of Judas, who betrays Jesus for money after the Last Supper. He betrays him with a kiss in the garden of Gethsemane-the kiss was a secret signal to soldiers hiding nearby to come arrest Jesus. (“In the garden I was playing the tart. I kissed your lips and broke your heart.”)
Judas by the end of the song is drowning in regret. But the idea is that Jesus is love and love will wait until the end time if necessary (as Jesus will “wait until the end of the world” for Judas’s repentance and for him to return to the light and to love).

Also, The Edge’s guitar and Bono’s singing are purposefully like two forces playing off of and pulling on each other. That kind of mirrors the two forces/figures in the song pulling on each other:
      Judas/doubt/dark vs. Jesus/faith/light

Love you guys. Always trying new things, and going new places. Big U2 fan, but not really a big fan of this song or album! (LOL)
I loved it when it came out, but hearing it again after all these years it's not holding up. (for me. I'm a minority here.) Anyway, ENOMA is great!
Love or hate any individual song, you two are always honest. Using you two as an example, I admit, I'm not loving this anymore. Still, I can't deny the talent of bands like U2 and all they have done.
