That's the year I first joined Instagram
When I downloaded it back in 2012, I thought it was an app for photography and that's it. For people to share beautiful professional pics. But then look at where we are now. It turned into ads ads ads sell sell sell promote promote promote!!!! Not as fun anymore.

Can someone give some more info here? Why is that the case - he wasn't interested in IT at that time, fine. HOW did those two things happen... this is the interesting part...
I just looked and his wikipedia page says that he was a product marketer at Google and that his degree was in management science and engineering. So, he probably new most of the concepts but didn’t have much practical experience in programming
I'm sure he knows how to code...

@@IsaiahGamers true. They killed vine which caused many cringeworthy creators like Paul brothers and Lele Pons to jump to TH-cam. David Dobrik is the only good thing that happened, but he had jumped the ship way before Vine got killed.

If you think about this, it easily explains the success of TikTok. It's a natural evolution of information: from written words to images to videos. When Facebook came, it was an amalgamation of ideas before it, including MySpace, but in an ordered manner. It showed up just when a new generation of people were massively coming online and didn't feel the need for anonymity (it was based around real names and identities). Then came Instagram, which took advantage of people's keenness of photos, which were already popular on Facebook, but were now possible to be taken on mobile phones in satisfying quality and shared right after taking, again popularized by a new generation of people, keen on looks. After that came TikTok, which took advantage of the video capabilities of phones and growing internet bandwidth for sharing them, again pumped by a new generation of people, who now find still photos insufficient to get enough of a peek into others' lives. Somewhere along the way were Vine and Snapshot, both coming possibly a bit too early (a bit like MySpace before Facebook), and Twitter which seems like a compromise between Facebook, Instagram and everything else, offering a bit of everything.
