  • Hello ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to anime theory, where I went through a whole 37 episode anime in a matter of a couple days. Today, we cover the ever-popular Death Note, and look into the possible actions of a certain end-anime character.
    I have a Twitter you can follow: / ceegans

    Near cheated by using a PLOT HOLE. The biggest plot hole was when Near just assumed Mikimi out of no where was connected to Kira by looking at a TV. Kira had thousands of supporters, but that scene where Near was just looking at TV out of the hundreds of supporters, he chose Mikimi randomly. That was BS
    Edit: three years later, never thought this comment would blow up. Thanks guys. And i saw the comments pointing out how the Manga did things a different

      That's right, the only reason Near won is because the author had to end the manga and make Kira lose, cos' if it wasn't the case, Light would never lose to Near. The plot armor was too strong, Light fucking outplayed L, he was way smater than Near.

    L:
    - he was alone (he has the task force but most of them aren't as loyal as Near's task force)
    - he had 7 billion people as suspect
    - he had kira by his side monitoring his every move so he cannot act as fast as he could
    - he had no mentor (by his intelligence)
    Near:
    - he had mello (his equally intelligent partner/enemy who helped catch kira) + his loyal taskforce
    - he only had 1 suspect (light yagami)
    - kira doesn't even know where near lived or what he's actually doing at any given moment

I enjoyed it though, it was interesting to see that there were others like L, even in training. We never did see much of that school... But hey, I get it. L is the perfect antagonist for Light and Near doesn’t really fill that role perfectly. Or perhaps you mean Light’s death, in that case I don’t really have anything to say other than to remind you it was destined to happen like that. OR maybe you mean the final confrontation, in which case I got nothing because I thoroughly enjoyed it. Light went crazy and showed everyone his true colors, the character interactions in that scene were amazing. Well, I’m rambling now so I’ll end the reply here. I was personally satisfied but it’s ok if you weren’t, everyone has their own thoughts and opinions. To each their own. Have a good day/night.

      Light screwed up. He told Mikami that Mikami was not to make any UNNECESSARY actions.
      Killing Takeda was necessary and since Light didn't keep Mikami in the loop Mikami did what he thought he had to seeing how he thought that his god couldn't operate freely.
      If Light had been truly smart he would've told Mikami to keep a piece of the DN on himself at all times.
      But then again, his entire plan was pathetic to begin with. Mikami takes a picture of the victim and sends it to someone on his phone, then writes down their name and then they die. Any genious would easily realize that there really isn't any need to send the pictures so who is he sending it to and why? It's not a stretch to say that L, Near or even Mello SHOULD'VE connected the dots and assumed that somebody else is probably doing the killings instead of Mikami.
      Add to that the fact that Mikami operates in plain sight, something that just doesn't add up when there is agents sweeping vocal Kira supporters with intimate relationships to Takeda who are COMPLETELY AWARE OF THE DEATH NOTE!

    ive watched death note like 5x from start to finish, and im pretty sure i understand the ending perfectly. try to correct me if you see any flaws.
    The ONLY reason light lost to near was because mikami took it upon himself to kill takada when Mello kidnapped her. in order to actually kill her, he needed to go BACK to the bank a 2nd time in the same day in order to take out the death note, which was Very unusual for his character, as his schedule is like clockwork. he was being followed by giovanni when he decided to go back to the bank to kill kiyomi, and after he left giovanni stole the death note from his bag or w.e.
    now near had the REAL death note, which is why they were able to make a duplicate of it. light anticipated they would try to make a duplicate, but i dont think light anticipated that mikami would try to kill takada, because light killed her himself, ironically at the same time mikami did. if mikami didnt go back to the bank in order to tie up the loose end of killing takada, giovanni never would have suspected something was wrong with him going back to the bank, following him in, and then stealing the death note from his bag.
    if mikami didnt do that, i think light truely would have beat near because he wouldnt have had the real death note, he wouldnt have been able to copy it, and he wouldnt have put a fake page in the spot where the final meeting was going to take place.
    if they didnt have access to the real death note, they wouldnt have been able to make a fake page, and lights plan would have ultimately worked in the end, everyone would have been killed and KIRA WOULD HAVE WON.

      xNight Wing You say that like it's unfair for Light to lose in this way, but what about the times he got lucky? He ran into Naomi Misora like there "was a God on his side."

    • @nightwing842
      @nightwing842 7 ปีที่แล้ว +209

      in not saying it was unfair, I'm saying it's 100% mikami's fault that light lost.
      in ep 36 light predicted exactly that near was going to do, but didn't anticipate that mikami went back to kill takada, because he took care of that himself, so he didn't account for that in his plan.
      if mikami didn't go back to kill takada, and everything played out as it did in the anime, light would have won

    • @Mrbluefire95
      @Mrbluefire95 7 ปีที่แล้ว +100

      xNight Wing It is Mikami's fault for getting exposed, but it's also Light's fault for losing for disposing all of his allies. He cried out for Misa and Takada in the end, but one is dead and the other is basically brainless. You could say he had no choice, but someone of his intelligence could have found a way.
      It's annoying that people say the ending is so terrible, when the series went from a 10 to an 8 at most.

To be narrowed down that much so quickly is pretty embarrassing and he was only able to survive until episode 25 cuz he could use the Death Note which was a HUGE advantage. He also had Misa which gave him the shinigami eyes to help him kill more criminal and the two shinigami who have him tips and even killed L for him.

    • @p4olar168
      @p4olar168 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@drippydrub3066 Light was stupid in the beginning of the show, and he should have never tried to mess with the police. If he hadn’t, maybe he would not have been suspected and he can continue killing criminals like he wanted. The reason why Kira is now so commonly known is because light wants everyone to fear “Kira” and be seen as a god. He did get played very hard by L and L already knew that light was Kira in the beginning. I feel like Light Yagami’s father was in the way for L to get his evidence. In my opinion, I love both Light and L and think one of them should have won. What made Light so smart than the others though is he used people and thought outside the box. For me, the best part of the show was when Light Yagami was able to release Misa and himself behind bars and make L confused but still happens to get the death note back in the end. Light is smart but if he wanted to go against the police that badly, then he should thought beforehand instead of thinking they will never suspect him, like killing Ray Penber. Light should not have killed Ray Penber. First, Ray Penber was going to leave very soon and then Ray Penber was going to tell L he was not suspected as Kira (I think). Second, it helped L by deducing it must be Light yagami since Ray Penber was investigating Light.
      Light is smart in his own way, showing that he tricked people and used them so he can achieve his goals. Though it is true, L is way smarter than Light. I just think that maybe if Light wasn’t so caught on about that being god, then maybe he would have survived longer.
      In conclusion, Light is smart just not as smart as L.

That's why he said out loud he wanted Light to take over and be the second L. So it was easy for Near and Mello to find him and so Light couldnt escape his way out of the investigation. L layed the groundwork. And near gave credit to L and Mello for the great assist! People hated Near but hey man he legit said this was a team effort. This theory was actually brought up at the end of the manga books by Matsuda. He theorized that Near used the notebook to control Mikami before he headed to the warehouse. This would explain why Mikami didn't realize the notebooks had been switched. Knowing Light, he would have told Mikami to test the book before using it, since he already realized Near would try to switch out some pages. Also, in the manga it's said that Mikami died 10 days after Near caught Light. He didn't kill himself. He died in jail. If you read through the manga, Matsuda explains everything in detail. I just thought I would mention that this theory is backed up by the manga.

    Light already had won for long enough in that after L's death he literally had 4 years where he continued the Kira acts without interruptions. That is a LONG time, long enough to change the world forever (wars? ended, criminality? 70% ended).
    I think the authors just decided to picture the end of the story as Light finally "paying the bill" for his huge and unhuman sacrifice.
    BUT, if we really want to set the cards as if Light should've won against Near too, well:
    he should've just USE THE DEATH NOTE ON MIKAMI IN THE FIRST PLACE so that even if Near found the death note and attempted to manipulate Mikami it wouldn't make any effect 'cause you can't "overwrite" if the name has already been written on another note.
    AND/OR
    Light should've been preparing a backup-backup plan for that situation, that is just hiding a couple of pages of true death note in secret places near the area so that mikami used them just before the events of that day.
    So, to sum up, even Light himself knew that ultimately his death is just him getting punished for his genocidal actions (more than 120k targeted murders in 4 years!), on the long run he won, 'cause at that time he already mangled most of the evil lurking on earth, and that is something we have confirmation of in the 2020 one-shot with Minoru explaining all this.
    Death Note is a legendary story and I hope to see a new anime somewhere in the future.

    Near and Mello were originally supposed to be going to work together. Mello did had a Death Note at some point. If I recall,Mello visited Near in episode 30. It's likely that Mello shared information to Near. The anime writer preferred the anime to be rushed. That's why Mello did'nt have much screentime. If it was'nt that rushed,Mello would've give info to Near time to time and I think this is why Near knows everything. So pretty much,stuff happened offscreen. This is also why they wanted to kill off Near. They did'nt know what to do with him. And beside,even though Near had to restart the case from scratch because Watari deleted all the evidence,I still think that Near somehow finds info that L had to begin with. My friend also thinks that and I agree. There has been a theory where people claims that Near has Autism (Asperger Syndrome),which explains why he's smart and he plays with toys. (It's also speculated that L have Asperger too.) Near was raised in the Wammy's House,an orphanage for gifted children. GIFTED CHILDREN. It was confirmed that he has an obsession with solving complex problems and views and investigation as solving a puzzle. He is highly observational and was once seen piercing together a puzzle that was almost entirely coloured white. No joke! Near also appears to be ambidextrous. Despite his genius ability,Near has low social knowledge and is bad at interacting with others. It was later revealed in Death Note 13:How to read that Near is only able to display his true deductive powers when he has the support of his members. However,Tsugumi Ohba,creator of Death Note,approves that Near is seen as a "cheat" or "wannabe L". You see,Near is very young,and he still is. I know this is a huge comment,but I hope it helps your theory. Cheated nor not,Near is smart in his own way.

    I think there is a central problem in deathnote's story. And that is there is never any alternate suspects or other possibilities. When L and Near suspect Light, the suspicions does not have any hard evidence and based mostly on feelings. Both of them admit Light is a long shot ranging from 5%-7%(initial assessment). But they both hound that long shot lead to death. Realistically, an criminal investigations will have many suspects that will prevent putting so much effort into one hail marry attempt result in much success.

    • @shiningvictory7060
      @shiningvictory7060 7 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      Good point now here's why light is the only suspect.
      He killed FBI agents that were ONLY tracking 14 families and he was in the 14.
      He had to have seen L face or been close to him to kill him which is why Near assumed it was him.
      Also out of all the possible suspects Light would have always been the most intelligent. Anyone else probably would have gotten caught by early on by L and wouldn't be haven't had put up much of a struggle.

    • @DragunovSniperElite
      @DragunovSniperElite 7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Wish Make
      I do admit for near it makes more sense. but for L, he just conveniently fixates on Light without any other potential suspects popping up. Light is intelligent, but i feel his intelligence is not portrayed as being peerless. Also the reason this case is difficult to solve is primary because the supernatural deathnote is way more powerful than traditional murder weapons, it is not entirely due to the intelligence of the perpetrator. If you look at real unsolved cases like zodiac killer or jack the ripper, there are always many possible suspects.

      Light, Kira rather is not stupid indeed, but he has a God complex and he is desperately thirsty for winning against his opponents. Think of it as if it is a card guessing game. Kira knows that Near holds 2 cards on his hand, one of them is white and the other is black. The black one is Near tampering with the fake notebook and the white one is Mikami making a mistake. Light knows almost perfectly his odds. He had Mikami noticed that the fake notebook had been altered and that's why he planned having the real one hidden. At the same time, he is well aware of Mikami's committment and that he will follow his orders of taking no action unless he says so. No matter what card Near pulls out, Light/Kira is sure that he has taken the right precautions and is ready to celebrate his victory against a card that will have no effect. So what will Near do? Black or white? He needs to play. Near will show his card under the same premise as L's, that Light is Kira. The answer is simple. While his opponent expects him to show a black or white card to win the game, he throws emotionlessly a g-r-e-y card. Near notices how conveniently Takada dies and thanks to Mello, he can deduce that there is a fake notebook. Simultaneously, the appointment's date is at 28, letting the possibility to Takami to break his ''ritual'' routine and move before the 28th so he cannot arise any suspicion. They card is not only noticing Takami's mistake, but also his inability to deduce and analyze his odds as perfectly as Light. Nobody expected Near to change the real notebook as well.That's what the grey card is all about. Near didn't cheat because he didn't need to. Even though Takami saw his ''God'' losing his mind, he is still a mere pawn, whose life has been controlled by Kira.Takami loses his faith to be a part of the new world, but he consciously thinks that by suiciding he can help Kira escape. If Near had killed Takami, the number of criminals in the room wouldn't have changed. Something like that would be against all of the people sacrificed before Near's victory, notably L. Yagami Light, Kira has lost. You can't create a new world by making humanity a hostage to your plans. L, Near, Mello and the teams against Kira stood against that. And they won, ALMOST impeccably.

    The developers wanted light to lose, light is smart enough to know that in the beginning he should of told mikami to rip a page out of the deathnote from the very beginning that he would use in the ending. Light is extremely smart and it would’ve made more sense and would have been a better ending if he knew they would try something like this. If an original deathnote page was ripped out and kept for mikami to use then this ending would’ve been way better and proved that light is brilliant. Except there's a HUGE flaw in this theory, the notebook was replaced long before you said. Secondly, Light DID in fact predict Near's plan, and had it not been for Mikami killing Takada, Light would have won. If he would have listened to Light and made no moves, Light would have won, but this obviously didn't happen, so no Near didn't cheat, and he didn't outsmart Light, in fact, he's not as smart as Light or L he just capitalized on a slip up. Perhaps you should rewatch the last half, and anyone else who thinks this theory is probable.

    Technically L did beat Light/Kira and before u say “how” or “really” L already suspected Light to be Kira even though he suspected a lot of people, Light was the main suspect that he could never say that “Light is not Kira” instead would say “maybe your not Kira” he would use the word “maybe” instead of saying “your not Kira” L couldn’t get to himself saying that Light wasn’t Kira. So then when Near got to the case all he had to do was a little more investigating and evidence and he did. L did all the work while Near just came in to put in half credit. L put 95% of the work while Near just put 5% of the work. In conclusion L already beat Kira and Near just got the victory cause L died so L was the one who beat Kira

      Impulsive Normal No, typically the police arrest criminals and put them on trial for a fair punishment. Kira was just giving everyone the death sentence regardless. In executing hundreds of thousands of people, even if they were criminals, would be destroying the lives of all of their perfectly innocent families and friends who love them and would at worst turn them into criminals too because they want revenge. Remember that criminal L hired and Light just murdered him right in front of his son? That kid’s gonna be traumatised and heartbroken and that goes for a hundred thousand others. Secondly, the crime rate did go down but it was still there, people just didn’t know it. M was running a huge crime organisation in LA and he and his subordinates were all getting away with it simply because M was clever enough to keep evade Kira and he most certainly would not be the only one. And my final and biggest reason for why I think Light was evil: Light was evil. From the very first episode it’s clear that he sees himself as superior to everyone else as he stated that he will become the God of the new world, he also didn’t care about what was a far punishment since he considered killing someone just being a bully at the beginning and was going to kill people just for being lazy at the end. If he continued he would only get harsher and harsher and everyone would regret ever wanting him. Light couldn’t handle criticism either. He wasn’t even going to kill Lind Taylor until he said that he was evil. Light didn’t even have to kill the FBI agents as Penber said he thought he was cleared, it was just Light’s fat ego getting in the way. He killed several innocent people simply for disagreeing with him or making him look bad and by thinking he was right to do so would be the same as supporting Hitler. Light’s goal of creating a perfect world is completely impossible. There will always be crime. Wether you think he had the right idea or not is up to you but to say that he was actually a good guy is completely wrong. He proved himself to be egotistical and hypocritical from the very beginning and he got what he deserved.

    Let's make this clear. You cannot simply claim that Near cheated, as he has a very talented agent in his investigation group who can tamper with a notebook.
    However, remember that Light instructed Mikami to create a fake notebook exactly like the original one. SPK believed that the Death Note was in the possession of Mikami without knowing that Kiyomi was the one carrying out the executions. Near used this information to tamper with the fake notebook. This resulted in the existence of two fake notebooks, one created by SPK and the other by Mikami.
    Later on, SPK identified the possibility of a fake notebook and found the original notebook with the help of Mello. So, when Near instructed Gevani to tamper with the original notebook using a fake one, there was no need to create another fake notebook. Instead, they could use the two existing fake notebooks and add a few names. This is the reason tampering of the notebook was possible in just one night.

    Allow me to put this to bed. Yes, Near cheated. It's implied heavily in the deathnote mythos that Near used the real note to influence mikami, resulting in his madness and death, which lead to Light losing. However, objectively, the same can be said for Light and his victory over L. He used Rem to kill him rather than being able to outsmart and kill L himself like he had with his other obstacles. Of course one could argue that he didn't cheat as he used his available materials to put himself in a winning position, (outside help: shinigami) but that would invalidate the idea of Near cheating. So they both cheated. However, plot and author intention was the entire reason deathnote went the way it did. Even the most hardcore deathnote fans can agree that the charm of deathnote begins to decline with the death of L. The author didn't want a repeat of this with L's successor, so the next arc had to be very different, resulting in the creation of Near and Mello. By this Arc, Light became complacent due to having no real opposition as Kira after having defeated L, which is why he made so many mistakes with Near. It has been stated by the author himself that Near is a poor and unlikeable substitute for L, and that he does in fact cheat to gain victory, because of his mindset. In all honesty, he won by circumstance and by cheating. Mello was the basis for Near to even get to a point to be able to cheat to win, and therefore Mello is the true successor to L. Plot demanded Light lose. I could argue further but this comment is already long enough and I feel I've proven my point.

      “heavily implied” by matsuda who was really fond of light. with that logic, it’s “heavily implied” that ide is right in saying matsuda’s theory is just biased because matsuda always liked light and never liked near.
      light literally acknowledged both mello and near as being huge threats??? at one point he calls near “more than L” when near calls out light’s 13 day rule charade with ryuk. light even said “this getting exciting again” after learning mello and near are L’s successors??? light didn’t make any mistakes?? mello and near corned him hard and he was still able to counter them?? light’s only mistake was underestimating mello’s sacrifice and mikami’s loyalty.
      i believe the *artist* said near cheats and the author said that near was considered not as likeable because his cheekiness was construed as annoying.
      near is essentially a brain with no body. he admitted that he was too afraid to leave SPK HQ. he knows he can’t do much on his own, he doesn’t have the guts but makes up for it in cunning and resourcefulness. he purposefully leaked his intel to mello because mello’s actions benefitted him, he convinced aizawa to basically betray light by giving up more info and drive light further into a corner by keeping an eye on him. near does exactly what you said could discredit someone as a cheater: using his available materials to put himself in a winning situation. whenever people say “near cheated” it’s clear they either didn’t read the manga, have poor comprehension skills or are just really biased. the anime completely butchered mello and near and it’s evident with the amount of “hOw DiD NeAr FINd miKAMi” comments on anything near related, most of the “hardcore death note fans” have only seen the anime. how is anyone supposed to have a decent opinion of an arc that got 49 chapters but only 11 episodes while the previous one had 59 chapters and 26 episodes???

    One of the biggest things pointing to this theory is that lights double committed suicide. If he didn't, the theory of Near using the notebook wouldn't be as valid. Near obviously anticipated that Light had a page of the deathnote on his person as an absolute backup. If lights double didn't die, light could just ask him the names of the people in front of him. This is a checkmate on Near. His death was a must for Near.
    That being said... I most certainly agree with Light that Near is inferior to L in essentially every way... Light himself needed to cheat to kill L.

    • @jack1029
      @jack1029 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not really. They would have already handcuffed him and confiscated any form of death note from him before he could try to write their names. Mikami will most likely be treated the same way. You people are just overthinking this.

    • @azazelhcs3752
      @azazelhcs3752 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they simply did that. then lights double could simply call out names.
      It's a game of chess... the series has been put forward as such from the get go. If I had found the deathnote and had time to COMPLETELY replace every single page. This did happen. They also know from the past that a kira can kill with just a face. Linking this to the book, It would be a huge oversight to simply let this particular person be able to speak. Even if by chance. Especially if light had an extra page (or there were other traitors in the room).
      Then lets not forget the contrast in the end. Where Light merely gave up the book in the past and 'lost' his memories as kira (without drawback from the Shinigami) and the end where the Shinigami is obligated to take lights life after his defeat... A very much crushing defeat.
      Overthinking it... If you were in nears scenario... You'd be extremely stupid not to... Especially if you overthought it enough to chat every page in the book with a complete and exact replica... and with that, even proved that these pages weren't duds, granted power by the deathnote having had pages placed in them.
      Finally. Nears plan was so thought out that he would simply check the book afterwards and see which names weren't there... to find Kira. At that stage. Lights name was probably written as he ran off. (If time was given, light could make the deal to get eyes and still come back with a roundhouse victory)

    Light still can win in the end. He just has a big ego. I mean, he can tell Mikami to pick a few sheet death note and keep it until light calls him.
    At the time, instead of using the book (that probably was replaced), he can use the sheet and write Near, SPK, and others name on that

    Personally I disagree with the entire premise that Near was able to come into possession of the Death Note. If Mikami was really so careful and so stuck to his routine, he would have more likely taken more careful measures, or always kept a page of the real death note in his shoe or something. I just don't see someone who obsesses on the this sort of level about precision making this sort of mistake. Nothing about the second season adds up, and I'm surprised Light wouldn't have had ordered it done that way in the first place. Again its like his IQ lost 60 points so that he could screw up for season 2.

    • @onijester56
      @onijester56 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was an odd thing and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth despite how much I understand what happened and how it connects to everything else that happened.
      What happened was that in the second season, Light had employed two "Second-Kira"'s: Mikami and a news reporter that I think was named Takada. The plan between them was that Mikami would write the names in bulk in a fake notebook while being watched, and write them in the real one (secured in a safety deposit box or something) later. Mellow kidnapped Takada, who then set about killing Mellow...and then Mikami acted out of routine to kill Takada before she could be tortured into giving away their secrets.
      If this never happened, then Near would have never been able to get his hands on the real Death Note in order to set up the "master plan". But, it shouldn't have happened not only because Mikami should have had an "emergency sheet" available...but also because Light already had written Takada's name on his own emergency sheet!
      In light of this, most of the "lost IQ points" were on behalf of Mikami. His plans didn't account for an emergency or have a contingency situation set in the event of a problematic event like a kidnapping, while Light literally always had a contingency plan or emergency escape in place right until the end (where he is justified to have only had a small sliver of paper in his watch). Lesson: A mindless servant isn't all it's made out to be.

      Light became too cocky after beating L and killing everyone else in his way, I do agree in season 2 it felt as if he was purposely made to seem dumber.. I just see it as Light himself got dumber because all people would get like him after winning time and time again.

    Fun Fact: In Death Note How to Read 13, it's heavily implied Near did cheat and used the Death Note to restrict Mikami's actions and kill him to defeat Light. The creator also states he hasn't decided yet on whether this is true but cryptically says Light 'specifically told Mikami not to make any unnecessary moves until they met'.

    Honestly, I just don't think Near was smart enough to think of this. Yes, he's very intelligent, but he's not even as smart as L. Light got out of control and went kind of insane towards the end to the point where he basically foiled his own plot, but Light at around the time before L died would have outsmarted Near quite easily. I think it's simply that Light started slipping up towards the end that Near won, and Near didn't even consider the possibility of using the death note in that way. I suppose there's also the argument of if he had used the death note, that'd make him yet another Kira, which would mean the case never closed.

    • @nearharvy2735
      @nearharvy2735 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      For someone who dislikes the L's successor sequel...
      Near is typical person who likes to give a go and relying on his instinct thus so much gambling on his perception, blunt dumbass without any hesitation to accuse someone even with a lack of evidence and just feel sorry if He got a mistake. He has some characteristic similar to Kira (not L) that's why He just follow his intuition as if He knows everything about Kira "if I am Kira, I will..."
      That's why He can predict for the 2nd Kira as fast as Kira choose Mikami to do punishment!
