    The not wanting to add to the landfills thing is a real thing for me, but I have recently learned to look at it this way..... I can hold on to this stuff in my home and have it clutter my life, sure.... but eventually, after I am gone, it's going to end up in the landfill anyway. It really takes things down to basic truth. My husband and I have no children of our own, so nobody to really hand things down to. Eventually someone is going to have to deal with all these things and they will end up in the trash, anyway. So donate what is reasonable and if not, move it along now.

      What a great way of looking at this! YES! It will eventually end up in some landfill! I don't need to hang on to really anything. It all becomes "stuff" then clutter.
      Enjoy your day!!!

      Yes! My brother is my next of kin, as I have no children. I just keep thinking that he is the one that has to deal with my stuff. I don't want him to have to do this, but I just can't seem to get motivated. That's why I'm here. Kallie deals with the psychology behind why we struggle. I'll just keep trying 🙂

    I binged some of your videos at the end of last week and decided to start small and began with the hallway and kitchen counters that always attracts mess for some reason 😅. I found homes for the things that usually end up there. And I have been able to keep it tidy all week so far, with very little effort actually! Considering I live with husband and 2 kids (8 & 10 yo). I feel very hopeful! 🤩Thank you so much for being such an inspiration 🥰

    I had to combine two households after the passing of my dad and then my husband. It is hard to let go of some things so I got my kids and grandkids over to get what they wanted first….then had a yard sale….then donated….then trashed. It’s hard but I will always cherish the memories without all the clutter. Thank you for your tips. It worked for me even before this video.. thanks for sharing.

      I’m so sorry 😞! I had my brother, Aunt and mum (Nana) die within an 18 month period! I inherited all 3 households. Overwhelmed is the understatement of the century! Everything had to be gone through quickly as we wanted the houses cleared out asap and sold. As they all live in the states, I had Purple Heart on auto dial! I kept things that were valuable; Waterford, jewellery, fishing/stalking gear, things that I have memories of, gifts I gave them…I started 5 boxes. Two for our daughters and the three remaining for my cousins. Everything is in our basement storage area and labelled. When it gets too hard for me to go threw a box and divide things up, I stop. Put it all back and come back to it in about two days. I had to do this because I recently had 3 heart attacks at 51. My heart was breaking more and more as I tried to push myself to get rid of this stuff. Go slow on things like this. I haven’t gone near any of it since June 2nd. I had surgery and I’m blessed to be ok! My cousin and Aunt are coming in October to help me with everything. I thought I could and had to do it on my own. Nope!! Blessings to you. I sold so much and gave away so much but these last bits are tough. Staying wrapped safely in a sealed, labelled box for a bit longer is OK. I also have a brilliant “GIFTS” box next to my cards and wrapping paper station that is filled with spectacular items I can part with to others. I’m a glass half full kinda lass! 😂💕

    Not one of us is getting out of this life alive. That's just life. When my beloved aunt died suddenly and unexpectedly in her 50s, me and her sister spent WEEKS clearing out a very cluttered (and very small) apartment she'd lived in for 20+ years. There were so many things that had never been opened or appeared almost never used, and that place could not have been pleasant to live in, because there were items stacked nearly floor to ceiling in the entire apartment.
    It was sad and also helped inspire me declutter more ruthlessly. I have only one child and I don't want him to have to deal with too much stuff that just sat there and I barely or never used anyway. We all think we'll live to be 80 or whatever, but that's also just not reality. Sometimes we don't and death is not expected. Again, I don't mean to be a downer but for those left living when I'm gone, I just don't want them to have to deal with all of that.

    • @rangerlove7
      @rangerlove7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That’s what my mom is doing now, decluttering her entire house so I won’t have to deal with it when she’s gone. She said ideally the only things that’ll be left are what she used every day and those few things I said I wanted. The rest she’s attempting to sell and if not, donate.

    I started my decluttering journey last year… it’s been slow but steady. I struggle with a lot of guilt getting rid of things, so after the first declutter of obvious things, I have been doing this “purpose declutter”:
    For example, there was a fire that consumed 3 houses in my neighborhood, so I went into my kitchen and bathroom and selected things for the familys that were affected. Then, the kids shelter asked for crafts donation, so i took that opportunity to get rid of extra crafting material.
    Having a specific purpose (helping others in need) take the guilt away… and it generally motivates me to select more things than originally intended

    We are in the process of packing our home for a move after 8 years of living here and there’s no better time to re evaluate clutter than this. We’ve donated and thrown away hundreds of items. We’re moving from a 2300 sq ft home into a 3500 sq ft home and I keep making mental notes of all the things we’re getting rid of and saying how we can’t let ourselves do this again in an even bigger space… it shocks me the amount of clutter and things we buy on the regular for no good reason. I know we had every intention of it being a useful item!

    • @luvslyfe1
      @luvslyfe1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Trust me, if you have space, it’ll get filled up. I moved from a 4,100 sq ft home and downsized to a home less than half that size, and the number of things I got rid of after living there for 25 years was insane. I absolutely love,love, love being in a smaller home at this period of my life. Too much space after the kids are gone in a big house, which in retrospect, I really never needed, not to mention the maintenance of the acreage. For me, thats where Kallie’s “season of my life” comments kicked in for me. With your mindset, I am positive you’ll manage it better than I did!

    I have a family member who will "give" others things but then there are so many strings attached. They want to see what they "gave" you when they come over. So.. I don't accept anything from them anymore. And the stuff they have given and I've donated or whatever I've learned to tell them the "gift" outlived it's usefulness. And I've given myself permission to do this even if that person won't. That's on them. Also I REALLY needed to hear that I can give myself permission to throw things away. I've held on to so much stuff because of the guilt of wastefulness. I've already learned to be more mindful when I purchase things but now I will try to give myself permission to throw away that stuff I've held onto for literally years because of guilt. You give awesome, real and practical advice. 💖💖💖

      If someone can use it, please consider giving it away, if you don't want to sell. If you don't want to post on a platform to give away, consider neatly setting usable items (maybe a few at a time, so people don't rummage through and make a mess) on your curb 3 or 4 days before trash pick up. This video has changed my life. I also have had the bad habit of getting “piles.” I have aspirational clutter. These videos have helped me soo much especially over the guilt of letting go. I did Marie Kondo method about seven years ago and I still feel a little traumatized (stuff everywhere for weeks on end, a never ending mountain, I lost my high school diploma despite keeping it for twelve years prior, tossing things like silverware without thinking then having surprise guests and just one spoon lol) Since then I’ve basically become a mini hoarder when I was fine before.
    But finally the “just in case” with have I used it in six months? This is more practical for me rather than “joy.” The two hour reset, focusing on surface clutter, etc. especially visual clutter. I have done the two hour trick three times and figured out pain points in my kitchen that were preventing me from clearing surface clutter. Today I FINALLY figured out how to address this and I no longer have pots on my stove, I am SO HAPPY! I wanted to cry from just being so happy and feeling so good. Like I can DO THIS. My house is feeling and looking better and better every day. Thank you so much, truly you have my gratitude for life. ❤

    I've found using Olio is really helping with this. There are certain things that I tend to buy then decide they're no good but for some reason keep them anyway. I'm worst with hair products (I have curly hair and am always looking for the perfect products) and cleaning products. If I use a cleaning product and it sets my asthma off I won't use it again until I forget it set my asthma off and I use it again and set it off again 😕 On olio you can list things like that and someone else might find it useful and it saves them some money. That way I'm not throwing good stuff away but I'm also not keeping stuff I won't use. This reminds me that I desperately need to sort out my cleaning and hair stuff again lol

    Recently my husband I moved to a small two bedroom apartment from a 2 story, 3 bedroom house so there was a lot of decluttering going on. I had a large pile of rocks that my son had gathered and given to me before he passed away at the age of 6. It was tearing my heart out to imagine parting with any of them. I kept 3 of them, the rest I took and placed in the garden at our church. I can see them but not have to store them. The others sit in my window. I had/have large stacks of all his art, schoolwork and so on that I have been keeping a few pieces then scanning and digitally storing the rest. One where he wrote his name I scanned, enlarged a bit then printed, traced onto a cutting board that was too small to use (came with a Christmas cheese set) then wood burned his signature into it. Now it makes a nice piece of art in my kitchen and took care of two pieces of clutter at once. I'm still scanning items to save but there are so many that is going to take awhile to get done. I reminded myself that this way I would always have a copy and they were safe, on my computer and the cloud, from fire, leaks and tornadoes. I've also been scanning all of our photos for the same reason and found some hidden gems I didn't know I had. Like my parent-in-laws wedding photo and MIL's HS graduation picture.

    Decluttering my small apartment this week. My sister was the keeper of the family heirlooms and I only have a few things from my parents and grandparents so I think I will hang on to them. I had moved across the country 12 years ago and left nearly everything. Unfortunately my sister and brother in law had a house fire and they died. It is a nightmare. Everything is gone. She had really been stressed about having so much clutter. She had recently retired and was in the process of decluttering. No amount of any stuff I have can ever again make my life whole again.

    I can relate to all of these 🤨. Basically, too much stuff in a small place! I have my grandma’s trifle bowls even though I don’t make trifles. My grandma died in 1986 so it seemed hurtful to see my mum throw them out a couple of years ago. However, sensibly, I can remember my grandma without filling my cupboards with unnecessary trifle bowls. I need a stern word with myself. Thank you for the tips 😊

    a lot of my clutter is mail. Mail from banks offering me credit cards, coupons that stores send me, and some bills. I have a fear that someone will get a credit card on my name (I don't know if that's just being paranoid lol), so I just keep this mail until I have time to go shred it somewhere. I finally made the decision to buy a small hand cranked shredder to shred mail the day I get it. It's small enough that it won't clutter up my space more.

    Another kind of clutter that slows me down is paperwork. Accumulated papers from invoices/receipts from doctors, veterinarians, donation/charity/auction receipts, work papers, projects I chaired years ago..... Every paper needs to be looked at and either saved (either in its original form or scanned), recycled, or shredded.

BUT… what do I do with all my old diaries? I’m in my 80s so my time may be short. I have three kids, several grandchildren, all over 20. I don’t know if I want the family to read the diaries. Do I read and then burn or simply burn them? Confused! I’d welcome your advice! Love your videos and working through them. I’m in bed and the kitchen is clean and tidy!

Plus, I realize now that they weren't even great quality ones. I wish I'd given them away back then when they could have been useful to someone else.

    Most problems are with my arts and craft items. I am suffering from ADHD and I know that I will always come to a different project in a few months when my hyper fixation on that hobby (knitting, drawing, journaling, woodwork, jewellery making) comes back. The material is too expensive to throw away and I can not store it somewhere I don't see it because I lack object memory. When I don't see it, I don't use it. And when I want to work with it chances are good that I forgot that I have it. It is very frustrating when I end up with several sets of something because I bought it new because I forgot that I already owned it. Struggling with impulse control when I want to do something and it isn't there so I buy it isn't very helpful either. Not logical, I know, but that's what my brain does.
    Good that every now and then I hyper fixate on cleaning my house to the tiniest corner. XD XD XD Mostly when I have other urgent projects that should be done but don't get me the dopamine my brain needs.

    Your videos ALWAYS inspire me! I have aspirations to do lots of crafts because I enjoy them. I have tons of craft supplies filling up three entire cupboards (yes, I have a problem, lol). I have come yo the realization that I will more than likely never get to them since I am ill and only getting worse. I have made the decision to collect all of the craft supplies and try selling them as lots first, with the exception of a few larger items. I have started gathering them into a box. Your videos have helped me realize this and gotten me started on the process. Now to keep the momentum going. Thank you so much and have a Blessed day ❤️

    My mom LOVES shopping & gift giving. She has very different style from my sister & I, but that doesn’t stop her from insisting on giving us big things that that define our style, like what we wear & how we decorate our homes - so she’ll look for it in the future & ask us where it is 🙄 It’s a problem. I’m about to threaten to burn whatever she gives me in front of her in the driveway.

    Great timing …I am so frustrated with my attempts at getting rid of both ‘sentimental’ items and old ‘cassettes’, cds and dvds . With sentimental items I want to back up the photos I take before I get rid of the items and I’ve had digital storage issues and then with the cassettes etc, I have to go through them all…find the songs I really want to keep and see if they are on iTunes and then buy them. But for the ones that aren’t but I still want to keep, I need to collect them and get them transferred to a new digital format and I can’t do that until I get the digital storage issues worked out..and then it is quite expensive to get them transferred. I was going to try to buy a ‘converter’to do the transfers myself but then the technical end wasn’t working out due to the limited storage and capacity of my computer. I don’t have the money to do an upgrade on my computer. ugh I had figured it all out and I had to special order the correct cable / adaptor and then the external hard drive. I waited 3 weeks and then it finally arrived. I had to make an appointment to take it in to get the help to format it properly only to have the techs tell me my computer isn’t up to date enough in capacity/ ability to use an external hard drive. And so after a couple of months of plugging away at trying to get some steps done so I can ‘comfortably’ get rid of my sentimental items and old digital stuff….I am back to square one and I have to start all over and even just try to figure out a work around now. I’ve decluttered my sentimental items 3 times before so I’m just down to the really ‘hard’ stuff. I’m so glad you did this video. It was very affirming. So many decluttering videos are for those just starting when it’s easier to just get rid of the ‘junk’. My books are another area…I’ve decluttered them at least the 3 times as well…now I literally have to read/ reread each book to really decide if it’s worth keeping or not.

I offered to sell it in a FB group and someone else was super happy to buy it for cheaper than new and has already used it to create. That was one aspiration that just wasn’t happening.
