A weekly podcast for serious movie lovers.
This week we review The Last Airbender.
Mark Keizer and Wade Major AKA IGN The Digigods host Stupid For Movies each week.
The show is LIVE and interactive every Thursday night
I bet ANY fan of Avatar The Last Airbender could have acted better than the actors in the movie
You got that dam right!!!!
Even though Toph is my favorite character, I think I'd be a good actress for Katara since I have a mature and dignified personality like her.
I'm a bit old to be either Aang or Sokka, but I might make a decent Hroo.
The actors werent bad, the script was just awful.
we'd definitely try and we saw the show so we're already ahead of 90 percent of the cast.
the source material was the best animated shows I've ever seen.
Its a disgrace to the amazing cartoon.
At least its bad enough that it doesn't even resemble the series. That way I can completely disassociate the film and series in my head.
thankyou for sharing you insight THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY!!!! (no sarcasm i swear on your life)
lol said film instead of series. Edited now.
Series is fantastic with amazing character driven storytelling, whilst the film seems to be a lot of really bad exposition based storytelling.
agreeing fully
How about the fact that he CHANGED THE MAIN CHARACTERS NAME
He also changed Soka's name to Sew-ka, Iroh to Ear-ro, Agna Kai to Agna-Kee and even ava=tar to of-vatar,
If they actually watch the show they would have been madder.
They should've watched the show and then the movie. Now there would have been some BIG complaints if that had happened lol
20 well made episodes crammed into 1 movie directed by a director who makes Michael Bay seem like a genius
He makes Uwe Bull look like he's trying
+gaston fernandez Isn't Michael Bay a genius? lol
if you're a Thomas and Friends fan, they made a cgi special called The Adventure Begins. in the special, it retells the first seven episodes from season one into a film that 45 minutes long and I love it.
Tim Madone he actually is! Money wise.
Well, there was Avatar actually has an episode titled "The Ember Island Players" where the characters watch a play about themselves, summarizing Books 1-3 with a pro-Fire Nation ending. Zuko said they love "butchering" plays, and they did. I actually watched it. It was a thousand times better and entertaining than MNight's shit.
I swear M. Night Shyamalan was on cactus juice why directing this film
It'll quench ya!
DanDaMaN95cov Maybe he was so bored by his own production that he fell asleep on day 1 and directed the whole movie while asleep, doing sonambulism!
100th like🤚
@@mlleyaelfleur only took 6 years
@@DanDaMaN95cov would have come sooner but I didn't know youtube at the time 😕
They're right about the movie being bad, but they obviously haven't seen the show.
huge mistake
Probably better that way. The movie should stand on its own too and it totally fell on its own
@@ReasonableRadio Agreed
3 almost 4 years later people still talk about how bad it is and comment on reviews
And we'll keep talking about it. It's like 9/11 for the series.
7 years later. We will never forgive. Worst movie adaption i ever saw.
Gunmodder 2018, fuck this movie.
Gary's Review I'm currently writing a draft of the show. I'm only in the introduction part.
YEAH. cause it was that bad 😖🚫
I wonder if Shayamalan talks in constant exposition in real life? It'd explain a lot.
Wade: Uh Mark, you know what this movie needed...
Mark: Uh, to not be made?
Me: Yes!!
Totally agree.. But believe me the last air bender series was so awesome.. You must see the series to understand how terrible the movie was. It was like everything excellent (in script, dialogues, characters etc) was already available and then the director Shyamlan just screwed it so bad.... Terribly disappointed.... As much as i love the series, i have the movie.. It's laughable..
The only good thing was the special effects
@@MultiTcherry the CGI was a mess most of the time
@@MultiTcherry But I think the best part of the movie is the music and the settings. I mean the Air temples look amazing and the firenation fleet is impresive
To say Atla is awsome is an understatement. It's a masterpiece
The TV show looked more realistic because, they actually hired a MARTIAL ARTS CONSULTANT? TF are they doing in the movie. They spin their arms like a helicopter and like 5 guys moves a little rock over and hits somebody. WHAT IS THAT. WHY BEND AT ALL? How about everybody go grab a rock and throw it at an enemy soldier! That would be more productive!
It's not "that bad." It's much worse.
I hope Shama watches these reviews. He should take it to consideration.
I'm sure he already has. And guess what? He disagrees with it all. The problem is critics like 2 of those unintelligent men are under the assumption that Shyamalan got lucky & did what he did well with The Sixth Sense & Wide Awake, then basically hit rock bottom by accusing the director that he isn't trying anymore. He just breathes air on the script, and knows he can get the movie made based on his short success.
That is completely false. Shyamalan, if you actually LISTEN to his testimony, has been making the movies he wanted to make. He's doing the things he did to express his own art, not to impress others. He's got nobody to prove really, except for the audience that continue to comprehend & enjoy his deep messages. He even made the claim that his films are better than the previous ones like Lady in the Water surpassing its previous ones. Lady & The Village, he expressed through interviews, are the best ones he has done. Just because critics think specific films of his are bad, doesn't make it true. Critics do not represent actual justifiable professional opinion in cinema as an art form.
He's a troll. Do not feed the troll. He's just trying to get your attention.
Firehawk376 Maybe you should quit stalking on all the videos I am responding to. It's disturbing.
Two videos is not stalking. Believe me, I'd be happy to see less of your overly pompous and self-aggrandizing profile image.
Firehawk376 Irrelevant...whatever it is that you said. It's far more than just two videos.
When I heard this movie was coming out, I was so excited, as, being an Asian-American myself, to have a movie that would finally break the boundaries that Hollywood has set on the way Asians are stereotyped as side-characters, and a lack of distinction between them. Once I found out the cast, it amazed me that Shamalama (Whatever) his name is, couldn't find a single Asian-American actor that he deemed "perfect for the movie." This just shows how Hollywood didn't change.
Disagree: The other movies he mentioned I actually enjoyed. Possibly because they were original stories. Agree: The Last Airbender was absolutely horrendous. Possibly because of the fact that I am a HUGE Avatar: The Last Airbender fan and seeing him trying to interpret this into a live action film that took most of what made the show so great out of it. Aang is supposed to be characterized as a passive monk. He knows martial arts but Night didn't portray the passiveness as well as he could have. I could sit with these guys and talk for hours about this film really. I hated it. I was so excited about it and I was SO let down.
"Do you know what this movie needed?"
"To not be made."
it was so painful seeing a ex vampire playing the funny guy, bad name pronunciation, and horrible bending....
Er...there was no Chosen One in the Lord of the Rings. No one referred to Frodo as a Chosen One of any kind. He chose to take the Ring on his own account with no intervene nor anyone wishing it upon him.
+Bane Nightfall and why did he say Narnia?
narina had chosen ones peter and his siblings were described as tht in a prophecy
Frodo was kind of a chosen one. He tried to give the ring back to Gandalf, but the old fart wouldn't accept it. Then got stuck on this journey, and everyone kept calling him the ring bearer and fighting about what to do with the damn thing, so to shut them all up, he heads off to mount doom because he felt pressured into it, turns into a hero, and sails away on a boat with a couple of elves that couldn't handle the job themselves.
Except Frodo actually failed in his quest and if it weren't for the intervention of Gollum all would have been lost.
Bane Knightfall good point
The worst part about the movie is how it ruined the idea of the last airbender for everyone who didn't already know what it was. He took one of the best shows on Nick and murdered it. I was so excited when I saw it was coming out in a film and then they produce this shit. Shameee
+Renea Audrey It didn't ruin it for me. I liked the movie. And because of it, I was inspired to watch the TV show which I hadn't seen already. I loved the show, but I can't hate on the live action movie.
Then came After Earth. Oh God.
Aaron Mont Then came Split
Hernan Cine Split was good.
Quick answer to the title of this video:
Yes, yes it is.
But...I liked unbreakable
I liked Signs and the Happening. Sixth Sense was pretty good too.
You know what I really want to see? I want to see the reactions of the show's creators towards this movie!
The reason why this movie was ever a success well a box office success was because fans of this show we're so excited to see this movie that they didn't bother seeing the reviews before actually seeing it and getting disappointed of how poorly and badly this movie was made and doubt mr M.Night will get lucky again if some how a sequel after all stupid things have happened before and fans just like me won't be fooled again I really doubt there will be a sequel but you never know and that's just my comment
the movie is so bad they will not make a sequel because it will probably worse than the first one.
I took my parents to see this movie. I assured them how great it was going to be because the show was so amazing. A little piece of me died that day...
I just clicked on this link which was suggested to me. Never heard of you before, but that's all changed now. Great review, guys. You're hilarious! I'm going to watch all your other review vids now. :)
Yes, yes it is.
If I didn't know that they'd made the Ember Island Players episode before the film came out, I'd swear that the Ember Island Players episode was ripping on the film. It's like a pre-emptive ripping.
Oh man, that Back to the Future opener totally took me off guard. Made me laughed like a freaking idiot.
I saw the ABC TV film remake of Dirty Dancing and after watching 30 minutes into it, I said "this is so bad i feel like I'm watching The Last Airbender again." Then I turned the TV off.
i always used to tell my friends how awesome the cartoon was, they watched the movie and were like WTF. damn.
Of his films, I've seen Sixth Sense (great), Signs (ho-hum), and Lady In The Water (really liked the spirit and characters). In each I felt he really needed to not be in his movies but even in Lady In The Water I was ok with his acting. I let that film slide because it was supposed to be like a children's fairy tale, a little overdone, even if the Tartunic looked as bad as the aliens in Signs. He seems to rely on the alarming twist, instead of good acting and dialog.
Hah this was a great review guys, well done.
I have to say I waited for this movie to come out on Netflix before I watched it. I was warned about every last horrible thing about it. But the one thing I wasn't prepared for was the 5 year old Haru. They didn't say his name but it was obvious it was meant to be him! I'd love to see that kid grow a beard for the invasion. He hardly even spoke. And the camp? It was supposed to be on a fire nation ship. I was somewhat looking forward to that part and was disappointed. Surprised? Nope.
Is it sad that I think Michael Bay or Uwe Bolle would've done a better job?
...nah.
Christopher Nolan for reboot? Or even Scorcese
Jackson for sure. Give it the Lord of the Rings treatment.
+Duck Kwon as much as I love those 2 direcotrs (Nolan and Scorsese) I don't think their style is right for that kind of movie. I would pick Peter Jackson or JJ Abraham
yea you guise are right, didn't think about jackson
Duck Kwon too bad the hobbit movies suck
What a great review. Even grown adults, who have no idea of how epic the cartoon was, hated it.
Title
Answer: yes, yes it really is. The end.
Oh my gosh I just watched all the vlogs he's made and I really enjoyed it! I can't wait for his next video! Thanks for the reference! :)
the movie being so horrible I liked the tv sires even more
Yeah, I heard that they actually shot the scenes for the Kyoshi Warriors and everything...
What happened to that footage?
I still don't get it... I love the movie, watched it several times...
It actually FIXED all that is wrong with the animated series, gave it more realism (bending elements only if they are near, especially). The effects were great, there's no other way to put it... Movie is beautiful, one of most beautiful movies I've ever seen...
I don't get what's wrong with it...
What was a dubbed over version of a japanese anime that came first?
@romeloo you're welcome! Be sure to check out all our reviews on here and our web site and see if you agree!
Why don't these guys upload anymore? I really enjoyed this
I love hearing experts bash this movie XD
the part were they mentioned how full of himself M. Night was made me laugh like crazy. Also, really, if M. Night is a one-note guy, what made people think it was a good idea for him to make a movie based off a show with such a heavy emphasis on humor? coupled with his recent movies' results, it was doomed from the beginning >.>
wats wrong with the golden compass?
Have these guys done After Earth?
No
He's not alone - I fell in love with the show halfway through the first season, but there were at least two instances in the movie where I had absolutely no idea what was going on.
No problem. I myself just found them yesterday and I'm really enjoying them, too. Makes me want to rewatch all the seasons again.
These two....they're geniuses. They summed up my feelings for this movie almost perfectly. I watched and loved the series...but this garbage M. Night spat out... It made me physically ill... And my cousin made me watch it again with her because she wanted to see if it was that bad. I made excuses to leave the room so I wouldn't destroy my tv...
its amazing how a series so GREAT is made into about two hours AWFUL. im just glad that mike and bryan made Legend of Korra so that the legacy won't be marred by such a bad movie.
when I said "trilogy of trilogies", I meant that each book is divided into a trilogy of 6-7 episodes a piece if it's going to be that accurate to the show
@amazenfireangel That is so true. My family went and saw it with me, and while I was annoyed at some parts and thought it was an okay movie, they thought it was pretty good. I think the Northern Water tribe and the beginning scenes were probably the only semi-good parts when it came to the storyline. Oh, and the names, and the fact that the firenations got their fire from right next to them? It would be cooler like the cartoon if it just popped out of their hands/feet
You watched legend of Korra its pretty damn awesome and its redeeming the series reputation especially the most recent episode (my jaw dropped at the end of it). I just think that people are realizing that epic cartoons like this should stay as cartoons. They are their own genre for a reason.
I never thought someone could screw up such a good serie! I mean, come on, how? How hard can it be to make a movie about a serie? The story is already written, you only have to film it..
When I looked at Signs on Flixster, it scored a 74%
ooh?
what do you suppose the Earth Nation race was in the movie? and the Air race?
these critics are a bit too harsh especially on the boy who plays as the avatar, i mean even though his acting wasn't that great they didn't have to say bad stuff about him, dude it was his first time, that was the directors fault for picking him not Noah's, even so the film wasn't THAT bad, yeh it could do with some better acting and dialogue which can be improved on in the next film.
I'm sorry but YES, the movie was indeed THAT bad. I agree that maybe everyone's a little harsh on the kids, it's obviously more on Shyamalan than on them for acting so horrible. This guy could have a cast of Leonardo Di Caprio, Samuel L. Jackson and Meryl Streep and make them play their parts as bland, stiff, humorless pieces of cardboard, smoothing the edges witht he emotional reach of a piece of sandpaper. Put that along with inexperienced chid-actors and the unadulterated genocide of one of the best cartoon shows ever made and you get Last Airbender the movie, the most offensive cartoon-to-live-action-film adaptation ever made. I'm sorry but "some better acting and dialogue" would not have saved this film. Only a better director who had actually SEEN the fucking show and respected it as such could have. It's like he just looked up the wikipedia summary of the first season and thought: "time to completely make that my own and change whatever the fuck I want even if it makes no sense whatsoever and will piss everybody off." I still can't believe after Signs, Lady in the Water and The Happening some studio allowed this guy to do this movie, there should have been artists' rights movements protesting this before hand.
Yeh true, I agree, I see where you're goin with this . Shymalans way of directing is a bit absurd, they should of got someone else to do the film, but for the boy although it was his r first time, I thought his acting wasn't too bad, I mean his stunts and stuff were pretty cool but yeah just changing the actors and dialogue wouldn't help, I just started watching the cartoon to see it's relation with the film and I understand now, man the cartoon is actually really good
MC Benny I don´t know how far in you are with the show by now, but the first couple of episodes are nothing yet. Once you´ve seen the entire first season you´ll understand why this movie pissed so many people off, including myself obviously. But once you´ve seen the entire show, you´ll be glad they never did a book 2 and 3 movie...´cause from the second season on it REALLY gets going, and by the time I finished watching the last episode I was just blown away if you can see the whole picture from beginning to end, it´s not just a great cartoon it´s one of the best I have ever seen. Like, Batman the animated series great...so enjoy ;)
Yeh I'm on the second season in ba sing se. It's getting really great, I'm actually glued to it now , don't want it to end. I'm already blown away by how good the story is moving. The characters in the cartoon are soo much more lively and actually have some humour, which of course the movie doesn't but yeah I'm loving it, if they are making a 2nd movie it's gonna suck bad they''ve already missed out some great scenes and moments from book 1. Was this originally an American animation?
MC Benny Yeah it actually is all-American animation, but obviously heavily influenced by animé so many people often confuse it as such. Don't worry there's not going to be a second movie fortunately xD what bothered me the most about the movie was how they changed certain things like the earth-bending prison which made no sense whatsoever since it was completely made of earth xD And I know that feeling of not wanting it to end, by the time it was finished I actually felt kind of sad it was really over. The story just gets better and better as it goes on, mostly because of the great character developments and story telling. I actually thought it resembled the orignial Star Wars trilogy quite a lot, so if you're a fan of that you're gonna love this. The drama and emotion just keep building tot he point it actually got a tear of out me a couple of times to be honest xD Not to mention the action scenes...some of the best animation I've ever seen.
what movie?
@MJprise1 l take it you haven't seen his movie Rampage??
@PhantomAct actaully they are the most qualified critics there are. They are members of the prestigious La Film Critics Association. Wade is frequently heard on NPR and both are the critics for Box Office Magazine and host the IGN podcast The Digigods. And this is not a TH-cam Channel. This is a weekly show as part of the Streamin' Garage Network- founded by Emmy nominated writer and Streamy winner Mike Rotman. But we'd love to hear your review.
I think Unbreakable were even better than the 6th sence, a very original take on the superhero genre.
I'm pretty satisfied that they have all the major parts of the show. Kyoshi warriors were more or less not too important. I also just assume that they could fix all those minor issues in the sequel. Examples: make bending stronger, make movie longer, add a few minor characters maybe. The movie could've had more, but at least the story didn't significantly alter, except for the comet coming in 3 years instead of 3 months. The next movie could begin in the Great Library, and end in Ba Sing Se.
So, I've never watched you guys review anything before, but it sounds like you're very well-versed in your films.
As a fan of the original show, I'd like to ask you to watch the first season of Avatar: the Last Airbender. I promise you'll get your explanation of what the movie tried and failed to show.
We get a bit irked that this is, for some, their first impression of a heartfelt, creative, fantastic show. And that it sucked out the joy and life of the characters.
Thanks for reading. :)
@homunculus7 dude, M Night Shyamalan got paid 120 million to make that movie?
Where did you find that out?
2:14 BRUTAL TRUTH 2:18 ALSO TRUTH
Same here, and oh thanks I forget about the acting in that movie. Writing, not as a career but I have written an Avatar fanfiction which in my opinion is better then the film, but its not like that is a hard thing to do.
what about you?
@ktchong Filler doesn't apply to Avatar. What you call filler wasn't meant to just simply kill time. The show was serial and episodic.
I always thought that THE original creators of ATLA should've stepped in and gave M. Knight Shamalan some critical advice to help benefit the movie from being as bad as it was. Or the creators of ATLA should've made the movie.
for the first part they did try to help, but anything they said was not really taken in. and the second part they couldn't. :)
FoxtrottingFox Basically Shyamalan hijacked the project. Main reason he thought he was better than the source material.
Patrick Donnolley
sadly yes.. there is so much they could have done. i am forever disappointed
But everything changed when the Shyamalord attacked...
TheTalentedkid101 2.0 Bryke on a podcast said that they tried to help and nudge things in the right direction but Shamaldingdong decided to not listen >.>...feels so bad for Bryke since they both created the Avatar world together and to see it ruined must've been hard
Oh yeah, I remember that episode, it was a bunch of casual ministories about their day, Sokka accidentally crashed into a haiku session, Katara made Toph pretty, Aang made a zoo and Iroh grieved his dead son.
Speaking as a Han Chinese myself, a lot of aspects of the show are actually based off East Asian culture in general; the Kyoshi Warriors are Japanese to the core, a lot of people in the Earth Kingdom outskirts wear Hanbok (which is a traditional Korean dress), the Rough Riders have Mongol names, the Water Tribe is largely based off the Inuit, etc. So you can't say the show is simply based off traditional Chinese culture (despite its major real-life influence on the rest of East Asia).
@FieryRabbit443 i think a sequel is planned already, but this time Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino (co-creators of the anime) or getting involved, so it should be a hell of a lot better
what about suki and the other kyoshi warriors?!?!? i saw people cosplaying as suki for the film because they were expected to be in it
think that looking closer at the ethnic and cultural details in the series one could firmly say that the air nomads are Chinese, the fire nation is Japanese, the earth guys are Korean and the waters are obviousle Inuit or Eskimos
He has filmbending?
@sunnygirly2k4
So true, i watched the movie a week ago. I looked at the trailer and was like "okay, could be nice", watch it and them i like "the hell did i just watch?". A group of emotionless characters : /
But im happy to say that i also watched the series after and was like "HELL YEA, THAT'S THE STUFF".
2:12 AMEN TO THAT .
Well someone did point out to me that its mult east asian based including the inuit (north and south watertribes).
I love these guys dude, I fucking love them
Anybody remember the episode towards the end of the series where the group goes to see a play about them and end up absolutely hating it?? To me it feels more like they were trying to make a live action version of the play rather than the show.
Noah Ringer submitted an audition tape of himself doing martial arts with a completely shaved head with Aang's signature arrow tattoo painted onto his forehead to Paramount Pictures. This video is what won him the role.
@Gordikramer
Nope, he didn't have the cabbage guy as a reference.
@ECL28E There's actually a few videos here on TH-cam of the characters watching the movie. Check them out, they hysterical!
@JennaSwangel4 While on the phone can you also ask Paramount to stop letting M. Knight make movies? Thanks!
16 people work for M Night Shamalyan.
there was a hill he went down from i always thought he was at the bottom
during the entire movie i was thinking: 'ok, not really what i hoped or expected, but no worries, the scene where Aang meets up with the ocean spirit and forms koizilla is coming up, and that is gotta be awesome'. But then... they just left that out completely! That was one of the most disappointing moments in my life...
2 things that M. Night did not comprehend when he got into making The Last Airbend:
1. the Fire nation = Chines, the Air nomads = Tibetans, the Water tribes = Eskimos and the Earth kingdoms = Koreans. THERE WERE NO INDIANS!
2. You can't compress a entire season in 1 movie. At least you can't compress a entire season that has a bunch important actions, relevant to the plot, in 1 movie.
Everyone talked about the script and I think that pointing that out would be to obvious.
@r0b0tj0n3s just look at the DVD extras, they're on youtube. They have interveiws with Bryke and also show them onset.
Then they would need to either: hire all stunt doubles for all main actors that bend, cast only main characters that have experience in asian martial arts, OR have each cast memver do a few months of intense martial art training. Its very difficult for western produced movie, especially when actors are teenagers
I've never seen the golden compass. Is it worse than avatar?? I don't think that's possible..
M Night's "Wide Awake" is what you dont see in the theaters that shows his films
Manoj wasn't a work-for-hire for The Last Airbender. He's the one who optioned Nickelodeon and Paramount to be the one to make the moive for his kids.
The Spirits chose him. It doesn't go into detail on that in the series, but like anything if you obsess over it, you figure out those little details in the writing.
I'm a HUGE Avatar fan. I saw this movie....
For the fans, do you remember the episode, "The Ember Island Players"? Where the kids see the play of their adventures? Imagine that with a budget...
Zuko: That...wasn't a good play....
*All agree*
Sokka: ...but the effects were decent.
Nothing short of poetry
At 6:20 he makes a good point. That's the difference between M.Night and JJ Abrams. Abrams said he serves the story and doesn't limit himself to a particular filming style. So if a movie calls for action he's not going to infuse it with a long boring shot etc. M.Night on the other hand said he has his filming style he used in EVERY one of his films. Obviously that worked in the Sixth Sense but it's unwise to have that approach to everything you do.
As I've said before I like a majority of M. Night Shyamalan's films, although I hated The Happening and the one good thing I can about The Last Airbender is that atleast its not as bad that film, but thats not saying much. Apart from the acting I think the biggest problem with the film is that it feels like it on fast forward, they're always rushing somewhere to do something. I've been told thats because it's trying to cram a season's worth of story into one film, 2 stars out of 5.
M knight was ever actually on the hill???
