i found out my 66 year old mom watched this on tv and actually liked it. so i remedied that by showing her the actual show. she loved it and says the movie was terrible in comparison and felt like an insult. my work here is done.
“The Avatar cannot have a family” thing always gets on my nerves. Shaymalan confused the fact that air nomads don’t have traditional families, instead believing it to be an avatar thing. Other then that, we all know that he’s dead wrong, considering Zuko is literally a descendent of his previous life.
That's not even a misinterpretation, just straight up not paying attention to the source material. Air Nomads seem to have a "raised by community" thing but aren't necessarily against marriage, as Aang later married Katara seemingly with no issue. The Avatar themselves are never once even implied to not be allowed to have close family and friends, as Roku had a wife and daughter. It makes more sense that would be encouraged for them to maintain such relationships since having them would be incentive to keep them safe by keeping the balance. To sum it up Air Nomads treat everyone as family, traditionally they just don't have a conventional family structure. The Avatar can do as they wish as long as their highest regard is keeping the world safe and equal.
I bet if they continued and made Books 2 and 3, they would have made up some BS of Roku disobeying the rules of the Avatar by having a family, and thus he was cursed to an early death and is one of the few avatars whose reign ended in disgrace or something, and all of this is what led to the beginning of the war, and all of this would be explained through narration or forced dialogue.

@@redninja0078 It always seemed to me like it'd just be natural to do. Metal is rock that's compressed into a more solid state. Ore is full of impurities caused by being in the dirt, and by smelting it you can remove a substantial amount of those impurities. An alloy is two metals smelted together, basically just melted rocks that have been put in a pot until they hardened into a new mixed rock. But still a rock, formed in the earth by the earth and of the element of Earth. At least, that's how I always saw it.
Sadly, this movie was my first introduction to Avatar: The Last Airbender, so it took until my sophomore year of college before I watched the show. Within the first five minutes of the first episode, I turned to my friends and said, "This is 1000% better than the movie."
My only problem with Korra was the pacing. Take the first season for example. Amon's takeover could have been stretched to two or maybe three seasons with time to develop characters. Maybe have Korra have to relearn the bending she mastered years ago to get her strength back while on the run and build to a big climax against the Equalists. Korra, Asami, Bolin, and everyone else were great, and the conflict made sense for the world, but the stories were too rushed.
It wasn't one day for everyone else, though. Amon somehow permanently chi-blocked everyone he blood-bended. I looked at it and figured he was basically erasing the bender's muscle memory. Whenever he took someone's bending they struggled to move like a normal person for days on end. It would have been interesting if she had to relearn her abilities - maybe even learn to be immune to chi-blocking so that if Amon tried to hit her again it wouldn't work. Don't know. That was my interpretation as the show was unfolding and that was the direction I thought they were going.
Man, I thought you all were exaggerating when you said this movie ruined everything. After watching Avatar: The Last Airbender in it's entirety, I now understand completely.
The show was FIYAH, close to perfection with only a few lackluster episodes (by comparison) which were still perfectly watchable. Great characters, so much great material to work with. And then we get this...
Do they have any companion literature that elaborates on them? My headcanon is that the actress who played Aang in that play was of Air Nonad descent and took it as a chance to be close to the culture she may tragically never be a part of. Also, the writer for the Ember Island Players is called Pu-On Tim, a joke of writer Tim Hedrick, which is meant to be a self-deprecatory pun.
Funny thing about the earthbending rant: I think the Critic's count is a little off. The ratio is even worse, in fact. Movie: 7 guys throw a rock they could've thrown with their hands. Show: 3 guys launch a tank.

Bumi had too much emotion and personality . He was funny, crazy, agile, and a strong earth bender. Things that are not allowed to exist in the movie. He also didn't offer that much exposition for Shyamalan to use in the episodes he starred in. Plus, they can't have a dark skinned character be one of the good guys unless they're background characters and/or unimportant.

I do agree with him. Trying to remake Avatar is like trying to make Ghostbuster again. Avatar is lighting that never struck again. Even Korra couldn’t recapture the series again, and Netflix tried but they literally can’t. Could there be a good remake? Yeah, they could add something to the story, but that’s it at most. So yeah, we could add or mask the show cooler, but you can’t make the Avatar there is again.

Oh those 4 seconds wrecked her whole introduction in general. The most important one being she didn’t go sfter Aang at all at first and it certainly had nothing to do with sozin’s comet.
In the show- The War lasted for 100 years cause both sides were fairly evenly matched for most of it (even with the FN developing steam tech). In the movie- The drawn out pillow fight lasted 100 years because it takes 10 minutes to move a small rock/puddle/torch-flame.
The show: Earthbenders each fling boulders and use rocks for various creative combat purposes such as armor, ground shaking, pebble machineguns, and creating instant makeshift fortifications. This Damn Movie: an entire team of Earthbenders do a 20 second synchronized martial arts routine just to fling one, small rock...which one of them could have just picked up and tossed with similar (if not better) effect.
Actually, it's clear that the Fire Nation has almost won. In fact Katara says that in the pilot narration. Coupled with how much of the Earth Kingdom the Fire Nation conquered and reducing the Southern Water Tribe to a small village, there's no way the Fire Nation would have lost if not for Aang. But this movie still sucks regardless :P

FlashQuatsch Yeap. That is part of why I hated the remake and I feel like it’s The Last Airbender of the Disney live action remakes. The original movie is my favorite movie of all time and Disney movie and loved and cared for the characters. In the remake, I didn’t give two shits about any of them and were often annoyed with the way the actors phoned in their performances. Simba in the remake just sounds very annoyed (especially when he and Nala were having their argument) and I just felt that Donald Glover was not a good choice to play a character like Simba. Matthew Broderick’s voice was perfect for Simba because he’s supposed to be a very timid, fragile, and soft spoken character yet in the remake, he sounds like a New York gangster for half the time. 🙄 A lot of the problems of the remake were pretty much like the ones in this movie: Awful acting, bastardization of important character moments and scenes, lazy writing, illogical changes that make no sense, rushed pacing, skipping over crucial emotional moments, unintentional funny moments of what was original supposed to be dramatic and serious, etc.
What's sad is the actors really wanted this to be good. I met the guy who played Ang (he teaches martial arts to my friend) and whenever this was brought up, he only talked about it in anger and sadness. He said Shymalan never really cared about the acting, and they got no direction. He said the other actors complained about the script, Shymalan never listened. He hates he was a part of this, and has constantly apologized for how bad it was. He gets just as red faced as The Critic does whenever it was brought up. So sad.
Yeah, from what I heard, Aang's actor is a super cool guy in real life and is actually much more like the character he's supposed to be than given credit for - just what did Lord Shymal-Amon do to him?... I know you already said partially what he had to go through but I'm sure there was more.

I always imagined the nation from the show being Asian. Fire nation = Japan. Earth kingdom = Chinese. Water tribe = eskimos, ofcourse. Wind monk = Tibet monks. I don't know why, they just give this feeling.

I know this movie blows. Saw it on opening night, in fact. But I really feel bad for Aang's actor, and here's why: I actually met him before this movie. He was a black belt in the taekwondo organization I went to. He just sent in a video of himself swinging his staff around while cosplaying as Aang to audition. He had no formal acting training. And they hired him, because he could actually do martial arts and they thought he looked like Aang. They should have known better.
Gandalf I was actually really excited before the movie came out. Someone I knew was starring in the movie about my favorite TV show of all time. The taekwondo organization I went to (the ATA) even hyped it up like crazy. Opening night was such a letdown for young me.

The bending is so slow and underwhelming in this movie it completely defeats the point of using it as a weapon. If people couldn’t do any more than that, then they would learn some other method of fighting.
To be fair, metal-bending is a very poorly realized ability in the ATLA universe, let alone among the earthbenders (similar to blood-bending among the waterbenders and lightning-bending among firebenders), and even Toph took a while to recognize that metal was just refined earth and that it could still be bent. I think she's even exclusively the only one in the series to even possess this ability.
Dionette She was the inventor of the ability. Most Metal Benders in Legend of Korra were connected to Toph's daughters, so it seems like it's still an uncommon ability by that point.
@@dionettaeon Toph doesn't actually bend the metal; she uses her earthbending-vision to locate the impurities within the metal and bend the impurities. Thus, "metal" bending. One of the few things I liked about Legend of Korra is that they introduce that platinum is so heavily purified that Toph can't bend it.
Yeah, that's kinda painful when a parody of the show IN the show was a better representation of the show than your film. Personally, I think James Cameron, if he ever gave a damn, would make a better version.
There is literally a fanfic of ATLA where the cartoon characters watch the live-action film of their own cartoon, decide it's way worse than even the Ember Island Players, and go into the live-action film to rewrite everything (most of them are aware they're cartoon characters and that this is a fanfic; they even read their own fanfic while they're in it)
The intro of the movie doesn't even say 'the fire nation attacked' literally the central conflict of the entire series and they don't even *mention* it.
I find it funny though that literally the first thing she teaches Aang to do is what it takes SIX people to do in this movie. AND she does it better than them. XD

The hilarious thing is, of those 5/6 guys who launched a tank in the show, literally only half of them were shown doing anything, meaning it only takes 3 TV Earthbenders to send an actual tank several feet in the air, while it took 6 movie earthbenders to send what was basically a pebble at one Firebender.
I'm also wondering those guys stomping was suppose to "represent" when a real earth bender stomps it's like an earthquake or pieces of the earth lifting upward. I actually thought this when I saw the scene in the theater, before I even watched the show, and couldn't believe it

You can't grow anything in rock. Rock is not Earth Sand or loose soil might not bend. The ground was rock and soil of their prison, on the top. Seeing the BTS with Noah Ringer, who played Aang, just had my jaw hit the floor; this kid is energetic, sweet, funny, and just bursting at the seams with charm! He's also crazy dedicated to giving every scene his all, so how in the HELL did "Aang" end up a dour-faced, emotionless robot!?
In a lot of movies, actors are hampered by the script and direction they’re given. Although, I’m not about to rule out M. Night Shyamalan’s ability to talent bend taking away the whole cast’s acting ability...
I'm going to be in a school play, everyone is making jokes saying they will kill themselves before the play so they don't have to preform in it (and it's a musical and most of us suck at singing so it's worse). Everyone hates it but their forcing us to do it and EVERYONE has to sing. The play is basically just about each person being a part of speech (like conjunctions, nouns and verbs) and helping a character find which part they lost, and it concludes with the character figuring out she lost her glasses -_-. It's so stupid so I can vouch for this

The most angering thing in the avatar movie was the blatant ignorance of the tale of Chang’e in this film. Yue’s story mirrors it perfectly: a beautiful maiden, forced to live forever, while her beloved warrior stays to live on earth. It’s a shame it was ignored. Especially considering the autumn moon festival.
I see Shyamalan careful studied the Ember Island Players episode for inspiration when directing this movie. Sadly, there was no Sokka to help this version.

And aside from the fact that the water bending always looked like it was either falling out of the bubble or nonexistent, that was okay. It was more of the execution that makes the action look so slow and much less impressive. Guarantee that if this movie actually edited the scenes and used less tracking shots and used cuts more often, the bending would be one of the somewhat redeeming factors

The animation kind of sucks but the writing is not only some of the best stuff to come out of the mecha genre, but it might also be some of the best writing in all of anime!
Mark Hamil also voice acts the joker in most Batman shows and games. If you listen to Ozai speaking I think he’s basically using his joker voice and making it deeper and obviously cutting out the maniacal laughter.
not to come back to this 7 years later but I was severely depressed around the time this review came out and no joke it gave me a little bit of life again. Laughed harder at the "I'm a little teapot" bit than I had in a while. Thanks for being one of the things that kept me going
The entire Airbender series on DvD: $28; The cost of adapting a children's cartoon to big screen cinema: 150 million USD... Getting to watch a man's nostalgia be destroyed... Priceless.
No... The most drastic and unforgivable change was the complete and utter disregard for Iroh's character. M Night's rendition of Iroh is easily one of THE most abhorrent things to ever happen in cinematic history.
The late Mako is literally rolling in his grave because of this damn film.. and for those who don't know, Mako was the original voice for Iroh. And Aku from samurai jack.
honestly even that wasn't that impressive, in the show we actually saw ONE earth bender catapult a tank. In the raid on the earth king's palace we saw soldiers throwing statues the size of houses at team avatar.

@@thekiller7994 Well, we never see the body (since it's a kids' show), but he got tossed overboard by Zhao from a great enough distance above the water to be bone-breaking assuming he lands on the water and not on ice (which would be lethal); his bones would be broken, he'd be in ice-cold water next to an enemy ship that isn't under attack, and he was screaming on his way down (which is the last thing you want to be doing as you plummet into the water). Since he never appears again in the show, it's safe to assume that he died.

Movie: Fire Nation representation - Indian but still in Japanese armor....for some reason Water Tribe representation - White Air Nomad Representation - White Earth Kingdom representation is actually fairly accurate.

“The Avatar cannot have a family” thing always gets on my nerves. Shaymalan confused the fact that air nomads don’t have traditional families, instead believing it to be an avatar thing. Other then that, we all know that he’s dead wrong, considering Zuko is literally a descendent of his previous life.

That's not even a misinterpretation, just straight up not paying attention to the source material. Air Nomads seem to have a "raised by community" thing but aren't necessarily against marriage, as Aang later married Katara seemingly with no issue. The Avatar themselves are never once even implied to not be allowed to have close family and friends, as Roku had a wife and daughter. It makes more sense that would be encouraged for them to maintain such relationships since having them would be incentive to keep them safe by keeping the balance. To sum it up Air Nomads treat everyone as family, traditionally they just don't have a conventional family structure. The Avatar can do as they wish as long as their highest regard is keeping the world safe and equal.
I bet if they continued and made Books 2 and 3, they would have made up some BS of Roku disobeying the rules of the Avatar by having a family, and thus he was cursed to an early death and is one of the few avatars whose reign ended in disgrace or something, and all of this is what led to the beginning of the war, and all of this would be explained through narration or forced dialogue.

Ore is full of impurities caused by being in the dirt, and by smelting it you can remove a substantial amount of those impurities. An alloy is two metals smelted together, basically just melted rocks that have been put in a pot until they hardened into a new mixed rock. But still a rock, formed in the earth by the earth and of the element of Earth. At least, that's how I always saw it.

Sadly, this movie was my first introduction to Avatar: The Last Airbender, so it took until my sophomore year of college before I watched the show.
Within the first five minutes of the first episode, I turned to my friends and said, "This is 1000% better than the movie."

Korra was awesome at best and awkward at worst. Season 2 was considered to be the worst, but hey, we got introduced to Sandworm-Light-Lady Raava.
My only problem with Korra was the pacing. Take the first season for example. Amon's takeover could have been stretched to two or maybe three seasons with time to develop characters. Maybe have Korra have to relearn the bending she mastered years ago to get her strength back while on the run and build to a big climax against the Equalists. Korra, Asami, Bolin, and everyone else were great, and the conflict made sense for the world, but the stories were too rushed.
It wasn't one day for everyone else, though. Amon somehow permanently chi-blocked everyone he blood-bended. I looked at it and figured he was basically erasing the bender's muscle memory. Whenever he took someone's bending they struggled to move like a normal person for days on end. It would have been interesting if she had to relearn her abilities - maybe even learn to be immune to chi-blocking so that if Amon tried to hit her again it wouldn't work.
Don't know. That was my interpretation as the show was unfolding and that was the direction I thought they were going.
Korra was good, but Avatar was excellent.

Bumi had too much emotion and personality . He was funny, crazy, agile, and a strong earth bender. Things that are not allowed to exist in the movie. He also didn't offer that much exposition for Shyamalan to use in the episodes he starred in. Plus, they can't have a dark skinned character be one of the good guys unless they're background characters and/or unimportant.

I do agree with him. Trying to remake Avatar is like trying to make Ghostbuster again. Avatar is lighting that never struck again. Even Korra couldn’t recapture the series again, and Netflix tried but they literally can’t. Could there be a good remake? Yeah, they could add something to the story, but that’s it at most. So yeah, we could add or mask the show cooler, but you can’t make the Avatar there is again.

Oh those 4 seconds wrecked her whole introduction in general. The most important one being she didn’t go sfter Aang at all at first and it certainly had nothing to do with sozin’s comet.
In the show- The War lasted for 100 years cause both sides were fairly evenly matched for most of it (even with the FN developing steam tech).
In the movie- The drawn out pillow fight lasted 100 years because it takes 10 minutes to move a small rock/puddle/torch-flame.
Those were the longest, slowest and most undignified battles in history 😆
The show: Earthbenders each fling boulders and use rocks for various creative combat purposes such as armor, ground shaking, pebble machineguns, and creating instant makeshift fortifications.
This Damn Movie: an entire team of Earthbenders do a 20 second synchronized martial arts routine just to fling one, small rock...which one of them could have just picked up and tossed with similar (if not better) effect.
Actually, it's clear that the Fire Nation has almost won. In fact Katara says that in the pilot narration. Coupled with how much of the Earth Kingdom the Fire Nation conquered and reducing the Southern Water Tribe to a small village, there's no way the Fire Nation would have lost if not for Aang.
But this movie still sucks regardless :P

FlashQuatsch Yeap. That is part of why I hated the remake and I feel like it’s The Last Airbender of the Disney live action remakes. The original movie is my favorite movie of all time and Disney movie and loved and cared for the characters. In the remake, I didn’t give two shits about any of them and were often annoyed with the way the actors phoned in their performances. Simba in the remake just sounds very annoyed (especially when he and Nala were having their argument) and I just felt that Donald Glover was not a good choice to play a character like Simba. Matthew Broderick’s voice was perfect for Simba because he’s supposed to be a very timid, fragile, and soft spoken character yet in the remake, he sounds like a New York gangster for half the time. 🙄
A lot of the problems of the remake were pretty much like the ones in this movie: Awful acting, bastardization of important character moments and scenes, lazy writing, illogical changes that make no sense, rushed pacing, skipping over crucial emotional moments, unintentional funny moments of what was original supposed to be dramatic and serious, etc.

What's sad is the actors really wanted this to be good. I met the guy who played Ang (he teaches martial arts to my friend) and whenever this was brought up, he only talked about it in anger and sadness. He said Shymalan never really cared about the acting, and they got no direction. He said the other actors complained about the script, Shymalan never listened. He hates he was a part of this, and has constantly apologized for how bad it was. He gets just as red faced as The Critic does whenever it was brought up. So sad.

I know this movie blows. Saw it on opening night, in fact. But I really feel bad for Aang's actor, and here's why: I actually met him before this movie. He was a black belt in the taekwondo organization I went to. He just sent in a video of himself swinging his staff around while cosplaying as Aang to audition. He had no formal acting training. And they hired him, because he could actually do martial arts and they thought he looked like Aang. They should have known better.

The bending is so slow and underwhelming in this movie it completely defeats the point of using it as a weapon. If people couldn’t do any more than that, then they would learn some other method of fighting.

To be fair, metal-bending is a very poorly realized ability in the ATLA universe, let alone among the earthbenders (similar to blood-bending among the waterbenders and lightning-bending among firebenders), and even Toph took a while to recognize that metal was just refined earth and that it could still be bent. I think she's even exclusively the only one in the series to even possess this ability.

She was the inventor of the ability. Most Metal Benders in Legend of Korra were connected to Toph's daughters, so it seems like it's still an uncommon ability by that point.
I wonder if the fact that worked metal is earth processed through fire has anything to do with it?
@@dionettaeon Toph doesn't actually bend the metal; she uses her earthbending-vision to locate the impurities within the metal and bend the impurities. Thus, "metal" bending.
One of the few things I liked about Legend of Korra is that they introduce that platinum is so heavily purified that Toph can't bend it.

Yeah, that's kinda painful when a parody of the show IN the show was a better representation of the show than your film. Personally, I think James Cameron, if he ever gave a damn, would make a better version.
There is literally a fanfic of ATLA where the cartoon characters watch the live-action film of their own cartoon, decide it's way worse than even the Ember Island Players, and go into the live-action film to rewrite everything (most of them are aware they're cartoon characters and that this is a fanfic; they even read their own fanfic while they're in it)
they should get the cast of this to play the ember island players in the live action remake of the series

actually the first thing she teaches is moving a boulder 6 times his weight and 6 guys in the movie moves the stone the size of his hand

@שחר א. actually, it's not even consistent.. there are some scenes where they clearly use firebending without a source..so they couldn't even get the wrong thing right
The hilarious thing is, of those 5/6 guys who launched a tank in the show, literally only half of them were shown doing anything, meaning it only takes 3 TV Earthbenders to send an actual tank several feet in the air, while it took 6 movie earthbenders to send what was basically a pebble at one Firebender.
There's no "The Last Air Bender" movie in Ba Sing Se. We are safe within these walls.

I think the choreography was taken from part of the series, even if it was not fully or at all understood. You can't grow anything in rock. Rock is not Earth Sand or loose soil might not bend. The ground was rock and soil of their prison, on the top. The Six-person stomp could be seen as the adding their abilities together to break the rock ground to get rocks that were sizable but manageable for their skills.-Ernie Moore Jr.

Seeing the BTS with Noah Ringer, who played Aang, just had my jaw hit the floor; this kid is energetic, sweet, funny, and just bursting at the seams with charm! He's also crazy dedicated to giving every scene his all, so how in the HELL did "Aang" end up a dour-faced, emotionless robot!?

I'm going to be in a school play, everyone is making jokes saying they will kill themselves before the play so they don't have to preform in it (and it's a musical and most of us suck at singing so it's worse). Everyone hates it but their forcing us to do it and EVERYONE has to sing. The play is basically just about each person being a part of speech (like conjunctions, nouns and verbs) and helping a character find which part they lost, and it concludes with the character figuring out she lost her glasses -_-. It's so stupid so I can vouch for this

The most angering thing in the avatar movie was the blatant ignorance of the tale of Chang’e in this film. Yue’s story mirrors it perfectly: a beautiful maiden, forced to live forever, while her beloved warrior stays to live on earth.
It’s a shame it was ignored. Especially considering the autumn moon festival.
Also the way Princess Yue’s appearance even seems to be modeled on depictions of Chang’e
I see Shyamalan careful studied the Ember Island Players episode for inspiration when directing this movie.
Sadly, there was no Sokka to help this version.

I’m actually glad you included in him saying that. I think from the small list of good things that are actually in this movie, the effects I thought were pretty cool. I mean, yes, the Earth benders throwing one rock was stupid. But everything else, like Aang lifting the giant waves at the end, seemed awesome.
I mean compared to what Aang does in the show during that part of the story it's still quite sad and underwhelming.

And aside from the fact that the water bending always looked like it was either falling out of the bubble or nonexistent, that was okay. It was more of the execution that makes the action look so slow and much less impressive. Guarantee that if this movie actually edited the scenes and used less tracking shots and used cuts more often, the bending would be one of the somewhat redeeming factors

Fun fact: Mark Hamill, aka Luke Skywalker, was the voice actor of Fire Lord Ozai in the TV Show.
Mark Hamil also voice acts the joker in most Batman shows and games. If you listen to Ozai speaking I think he’s basically using his joker voice and making it deeper and obviously cutting out the maniacal laughter.

@@thekiller7994 Well, we never see the body (since it's a kids' show), but he got tossed overboard by Zhao from a great enough distance above the water to be bone-breaking assuming he lands on the water and not on ice (which would be lethal); his bones would be broken, he'd be in ice-cold water next to an enemy ship that isn't under attack, and he was screaming on his way down (which is the last thing you want to be doing as you plummet into the water). Since he never appears again in the show, it's safe to assume that he died.
