Yup, the actual Avatar character's opinions on the Ember Island Player's play pretty much equals the fan's opinions XD Although the Ember Island Players is better in my opinion...
I paid nearly $20 bucks to see this film. I would have been less insulted if somebody walked up to me, beat me to the brink of death, and then stole $20 from me, than I was when I walked out of the theater and realized that I paid to see this movie.
+DiaryofA WimpyCollegeGirl seriously, if she wanted to dress up as katara, she was probably a huge fangirl, it probably earned a few months of hate... followed by more every time it's shown on tv
DiaryofA WimpyCollegeGirl Apparently Shyamalan himself is embarrassed. Apparently his original proposal and draft were more accurate but Nick execs kept stifling him at every turn. He only claims he likes it to save face, so I've heard. The name thing was all him though.
DiaryofA WimpyCollegeGirl And funny story about Katara- apparently the "actress" was some bigwig's daughter who forced Shyamalan to put her into the movie. And then they had to make Sokka white so they'd look like siblings or some bullshit like that. Apparently he was originally cast based on a humorous audition tape, but was forced by the marketing department to play it seriously. Whose genius idea it was to make a live action adaptation in the first place I don't know. They should've just done an animated movie about Zuko finally reuniting with his mother.
So I've heard. The movie seems like he just read the cliffnotes, or maybe the wikipedia entry or something. Or maybe he did see the show, hated it (for some reason known only to him), and was trying to ruin it for all time.
The TV show looked more realistic because, they actually hired a MARTIAL ARTS CONSULTANT? TF are they doing in the movie. They spin their arms like a helicopter and like 5 guys moves a little rock over and hits somebody. WHAT IS THAT. WHY BEND AT ALL? How about everybody go grab a rock and throw it at an enemy soldier! That would be more productive!
andykishore Well, duh. It's a good movie. A better thing to say is that "Rugrats Go Wild" is better than this, that would at least bring more of a challenge, or maybe "Good Burger," or "Hey Arnold: The Movie," or "Barnyard," since those were considered some of the worst Nickelodeon movies before "The Last Airbender" was released. Heck, even "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2014" was better than this.

They're not AWFUL, but they're nothing special either. They're pretty standard CGI, maybe a little towards the low end of the quality spectrum, but not too bad. Of course, this came out around the same time as Avatar, which was a demonstration of some of the best CGI ever to grace the big screen, so...
Wow that one guy gave this movie a 7/10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????? How does one get into this movie, with poor transitions, poor character development, poor acting, awkward conversations that is either purely for exposition or irrelevant, SLOW bending, begs that question a lot (how are there two white people raised among Inuits, why is it that the only scene he smiled in was him running away, long slow drawn out fighting scenes, why is the prison ON EARTH and why are they discouraged?), they are really serious without there being any suspense, little to no emotions (that were appropriate), and just poor casting choices. These are reasons for people who have not seen the animated show. As an adaptation, it is unfaithful in telling the main parts of season 1. There are absolutely no redeeming qualities that would make this movie rise above "ok" and "meh" because of stated reasons above. It is not really about the matter of subjectivity at this point. It is objective that this movie sucked in all aspects both as an adaptation and a movie. The only reason this movie would have a 1/10 or maybe a 2/10 is because of the decent effects.
That would be a good first step. Another good step would be to hire actors who actually know what the hell they're doing, not some kid who's never acted before. They only got one thing right (mostly), and that was the decision of which episodes to use. Now excuse me, I need to go brain bleach the "pebble dance" out of my head.
The thing that pissed me off the most was the prison bit....Was on earth with steel walls....I'm Sorry when ya put people who can control earth in a palce where they got enough to wipe out a small country the logic is lost.
You know. I am a big avatar fan. I truly truly love the show. Characters are well written and relatable. The movie, I agree is horrible. But I think people are overreacting. We still have the show. We can still enjoy the show. If you do not like movie, then do not watch it. I ignore it, and my view of M. Night is neutral. The show is so great, that movie barely makes a dent. And you know, I found out about this show after watching the movie and later watched the show and fell in love with it. And besides I doubt any director would have handled it good. It is always difficult to translate shows info movies, and not everyone can do it. So enjoy the show, and if you hate the movie, ignore the movie. This is my opinion😊😊
I would have been able to go past the actors looking nothing like the characters,if the actors were actually good. But they weren't. Not looking like their characters + not even being good at acting = BAD BAD BAD BAD MOVIE
I honestly believe that a live-action version of this show can be really good. If it had a different director, different writer(s), BETTER ACTORS, better choreography, and a shorter story to help tie in all of the important parts, who knows? It could turn out to be an exceptional film.
I'm so....so...SO GLAD...I didn't watch the animated series first. Cuz I watched this movie and was like...WOW this is shit...but I love the world its set in....its this which made me go and watch the animation...and CRY EVEN MORE
@sexipants I see, but changing it now will piss off fans, and the way it sounds will piss off new people to the series... So what audience is M. Night aiming for?
true but Toph is in the second part i think you mean Suki, and the rest of the keoshi warriors, and Bato. They have significant roles later on and they aren't even in the movie
I could never hate someone enough to destroy their creation the way M. Night Shamalan did to Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko's work. It looks nothing like the series they worked so hard on.
i was waiting for them to make a film for this show. i found out and couldnt wait. and according to reviews it blows. bring in a good director and remake this film.
I know this is old, but i'm pretty sure at some point the makers of avatar do say that all the being motions are 100% martial arts. SO yeah, they can definitely be done.
Well the bending of the elements in the show is based off of four actual types of martial arts, so I'm sure the moves could be executed properly. But I was referring more to the special effects aspect of things. The last Twilight movie had better effects with the elements than this movie did. :/
I can't say that it has any redeeming factors, because no amount of special effects can make up for the damage this movie has done to the reputation of such a masterfully created series as Avatar.
Thing is, they left out some important details for later sequels IF he makes them. He left out Suki and the rest of the Kiyoshi warriors, who are supposed to be important later, especially Suki :U. They left out Bumi which can screw up stuff with the order of the white lotus, they left out Jet which is important when it comes to ba sing se. And don't get me started on how they ruined the characters personalities. I'm pretty sure we understand that he couldn't add in every detail. But come on.
The thing is though, the characters are already cemented in our minds- any actor would have a hard time living up to our expectations as fans. And on a sidenote, I'm not too sure they could get the bending of the elements exactly right, either. :/ who knows, though? I would also like to see a decent reincarnation of Avatar on the big screen. :)
I honestly don't see any hope for a 2nd or 3rd movie extending from this version of avatar. I think they should just start all over, do the casting right, give the directing, writing, and producing job to someone who knows what they're doing (maybe one of the actual creators/writers of avatar), and actually put some thought into the movie.
I don't think Shamalan intended to make a film adaption of Avatar: The Last Airbender. I think he intended to make a film adaption of "The Boy in the Iceberg" by the Ember Island Players.
If he (Shyamalan) was going to the movie he could've at least done two things, first asked the track team to either use their original music or lend their talents to the movie soundtrack and second he should've asked the directors if the series to come on as consultants for the script. Maybe the original directors should've made the movie.
Maybe. I'm not willing to say it would've been good if the bending of the elements was better, cuz that definitely wasn't the only problem. But I see what you're saying. What I fail to comprehend though, is the fact that even though today's special effects are pretty incredible, the movement of the elements- in ANY movie- could still really use some work. I mean, with some movies it may have been a budget issue. But I'm pretty sure this movie was pretty well paid for, so that's no excuse.
I was almost in tears. I was so dissapointed in this movie. Mike & Bryan better not let M. Night go anywhere near the next two books. And if he even thinks about breathing on The Legend of Korra........*steams coming out of my ears*
I am a fan of the series, and I didn't even go to the movie when the rest of my family did (my intuition told me not to). As expected, they came home telling me how bad it was. If you haven't seen the series yet, go watch it! You won't be disappointed.
Totally. I was pretty disappointed with the special effects (among other things). The storyline was definitely not at fault here- the parts that weren't changed from the cartoon. The cast, director, special effects, and script, however, were. I was really sad to see that this movie turned out the way it did. :/
He watched the show and still made a movie this bad!? He saw how awesome it was, heard them pronounce the names of each character, and saw what they all looked like and still messed it up! How is that even possible!?
@froggymicwop what do mean? all them were on this planet and their future generation(Now). Japan,Tibet, Eskimos(Inuit?-Canada or Alaska or Russia) and China. P.S are you a troll??
@dragonsangel87 Momo was in the movie, but he was pretty much just a little weird creature that stalked Aang (He makes really random appearances in bits of the movie) they don't actually mention his name at all, which would confuse people who saw the movie but haven't watched the (awesome) original animated series...
@LiamDaLemon He may have just wanted to give it a different feel. The story of the Avatar is great, but they probably felt that it may come out better (perhaps) with a different feel to it, different emotions being brought out. From what I've seen in the show, it does a great job of being both dark, and light hearted at the same time Remember though, they took a set of 20 episodes, each about 22min, and compressed them into 2 hours. So, roughly 7 hours of a series into a 2 hours movie.
zuko's scar is a black eye aang's tatoo looks like something braveheart would draw (all gaelic lookin) and he was too serious firebenders needed pre-existing flames (around them) to use their element 3 strikes too many there was more but then then i'd be complaining...that's what a forum is for
You know what, I just saw this movie like 2 hours ago and I didn't actually find it that bad...I agree with all of you who says that the change in the name pronounciations were unnecessary, the characters personalities changed and the humour was taken out...but at least the special effects were good, the costumes and storyline stuck to the series...I don't really know how he could have done it better but I thought M Night Shyamalan did pretty good to shove 21 episodes into a 2 hour movie
@mothrabattra in your dreams pal!! James Cameron has been working on concept designs for his Battle Angel Alita adaption and we Alita fans have been waiting 8 YEARS for this film to be made. The only reason why he worked on Avatar first was because he wanted to test out the new CGI and 3D technology that he's going to incorperate in the Cyberpunk Epic. It's going to be the best Manga live action adaption ever Battle Angel Alita is the greatest
I like this movie, I love Noah!!! He´s a great Avatar eventhough he is not a professional actor, he did it quite well. He has in his eyes the compassion that is needed for the Aang character.
People come on. It was really pretty good. Yeah, they could've done better, and I missed the humor, but I still really liked it. The special fx were amazing, and considering they only had 2 hours to work with, the story was pretty accurate. Stop bashing it!
But one thing I do need to point out; Avatar fans, stop blaming everything 100% on M. Night, it's not totally his fault, in fact far over 50% is NOT M. Night's fault. If you're a fan of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man series, you heard about how Sony pushed too much on Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man, and that's why both those movies were terrible; Same thing happened to The Last Airbender; Paramount did to M. Night what Sony did to Sam Raimi.
I thought it was a great movie, but to be honest, that's because I was just happy period that someone at least took the time to make an Avatar movie. As I was watching, I enjoyed it, as I paid attention to what in the movie was like the series, which let's be honest, The Last Airbender still followed the same basic story line.
It is possible. I don't know how much money they made but maybe it was enough for a second movie. However, I doubt that even Shyamalan could be that dumb to risk it. He messed up the characters so badly... I could stand that they didn't look like the cartoon figures but they also didn't really act like them.
Oh my God: Their opinions on the movie were literally:
"That...wasn't a good play.
I'll say.
No kidding.
Horrible.
...but the effects were decent!"
It's like they predicted what a real life adaptation would be like of it were made lol
Yup, the actual Avatar character's opinions on the Ember Island Player's play pretty much equals the fan's opinions XD Although the Ember Island Players is better in my opinion...
it would be ICONIC if the live action Netflix series have the amber island players be this movie and have them recite those lines from the show.
I paid nearly $20 bucks to see this film. I would have been less insulted if somebody walked up to me, beat me to the brink of death, and then stole $20 from me, than I was when I walked out of the theater and realized that I paid to see this movie.
Lol!!!!
ROFL your comment had me dying of laughter!
+Japheth19 fuck that's funny xd
Lmao
I do think he could have done a little better.
His daughter must be so ashamed..
I know just IMAGINE how embarrassed she must be. Poor thing :(

" Let the emotions flow like water " ...even here those lines are better delivered than in the movie
Here we are 10 yrs later, and I STILL think Steven Seagal has better presence. Someone needs to give me my $40 back 😡
6:11 forgot about that part LMAO
@@jtheirse6529 i think u should forget about that 40 cent and move on
Oh gosh that poor guy at the end. I was amused at how genuinely concerned she was for him.
It was a mockery of everything beautiful that existed in the Avatar: The Last Airbender.
No it's the insult of the ember island players
Wait he actually watched the show?!?!?!?!
Maybe 1 or 2 episodes
That's even worse knowing he watched the series...and yet made this movie.......
So I've heard. The movie seems like he just read the cliffnotes, or maybe the wikipedia entry or something. Or maybe he did see the show, hated it (for some reason known only to him), and was trying to ruin it for all time.
*+Jack Mahoney* Let me check my magic 8 ball.
"Sources say: No"
I’m calling bullshit. If he watched the show, then he would be more faithful
I never got why EVERY firebender was indian exept iroh
Hell I never got why Aang, Katara and Sokka were white
Dan Myszka actually the actor of Iroh is iranian ;-) SlyMagma I think it's called racism...
Fuck shalalalwomen. He
portrays asians as either bad guys or useless then white washes all the heroes to being white saviors.
"Forget this movie even existed in existence!" XD
The dude who gave it a 7 smoked something in the middle of the movie, just before he started thinking it wasn't that bad, lol.
In a word: unwatchable.
I literally have yet to watch the thing all the way through. I get frustrated, angry, and insulted, then rage quit.
6:11 The poor guy don't know what's coming...
I wonder if he’s seen this comment now, and gives us a review haha!
;-;
5:11 And that man is still correct today.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water is better than this.
andykishore Well, duh. NO! The special effects were NOT nice! I could do better special effects in PAINT than Shyamalama-ding-dong did.
They're not AWFUL, but they're nothing special either. They're pretty standard CGI, maybe a little towards the low end of the quality spectrum, but not too bad. Of course, this came out around the same time as Avatar, which was a demonstration of some of the best CGI ever to grace the big screen, so...
Waterbenders have a lot more control over the water the water is not dripping like crazy the whole time
My waterbending effects are way better than this.
Wow that one guy gave this movie a 7/10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????? he was being polite
When classic Grace videos appear in your feed...and it's now 2020
Same
He watched the series and he was hooked all while sipping a cold glass of cactus juice.
- Did you read any of the reviews?
- No, not yet.
- Oh. Okay.
lol Her response is just full of "I know something you don't know!"
I saw pity, there.
Or maybe I was projecting.
I hate this movie more than cancer.
This movie IS cancer.
OH EXCUSE BUT IT'S A ADAPTATION !!!!!STUPID MAN
Paramount please redo this with a BETTER director!!
Shouldn't be hard to do. My left shoe could probably do a better job.
Atleast ur shoe would get the series creators involved.
They didn't puck the right episodes, because they left out suki, AND King Bumi.

@LiamDaLemon I've only seen a few episodes of the show, and I've yet to see the movie. So explain to me, how did he change it from the series?
Why do these people she's interviewing look like the people you'd see in the show?
I would have been able to go past the actors looking nothing like the characters,if the actors were actually good.
But they weren't.
Not looking like their characters + not even being good at acting = BAD BAD BAD BAD MOVIE
QUESTION: did they actually mention sozin's comet in that movie because I dont remember them doing so
What's the music used in the trailer from 0:16-0:32? I like it.
At least the play was funny especially with Katara and all her hope "whyd u take the water scrolls" "THEY JUST GAVE ME SO MUCH HOPE!!!"
I honestly believe that a live-action version of this show can be really good. If it had a different director, different writer(s), BETTER ACTORS, better choreography, and a shorter story to help tie in all of the important parts, who knows? It could turn out to be an exceptional film.
The only way they could redeem it is to call it a Spoof movie.
it's not even funny enough to call a spoof movie.
I think that the most emotional part of this movie was one of the freakin trees in the background. A tree can portray better emotion than this movie.
As the great comedian Sokka once said... "Well, the effects were decent..."
Has the film been split into the sections of Air, Water, Earth and Fire
Oh, Momo was there.
also on note which one of the people you interviewed, does not live with their mom
I'm so....so...SO GLAD...I didn't watch the animated series first. Cuz I watched this movie and was like...WOW this is shit...but I love the world its set in....its this which made me go and watch the animation...and CRY EVEN MORE
2:25 at least give him credit for honesty, although clearly he’s never seen the show before.
When's the reboot gonna happen?
will there be an Airbender 2 movie???
Due it depens on what type of move theater you go to
did u like the series?
5:11
Grace: Well this is supposed to be a trilogy
Guy with IM shirt: hahahah!
.
I lolled at that reaction xD
HOW in Agni's gracious name did they screw up fire bending.
I've been seeing people defend that the way the names were pronounced in the movie were right. It's not a chinese show, it's written by
I wonder can M.Night Shyamalan sink any lower?

the last guy she talked to, they should have done a follow up as soon as he walked out the movie theater, crying.

"Braaaaaaaaaaiiins..."
The first draft of the script for the last airbender
I lasted literally 3 minutes of dialogue, then I walked out of the theater... I was so pissed...
We don't ask him to put all the episodes! but,he dropped alot of important details like Haru,Jet,Bumi & Suki!
I am a fan of the series, and I didn't even go to the movie when the rest of my family did (my intuition told me not to). As expected, they came home telling me how bad it was. If you haven't seen the series yet, go watch it! You won't be disappointed.
omg.. lol .. im a big fan to.. and i watched it.. i actully loved it... i think he did a great job giving us 20 episodes in 110 min ^^

Really?? can i ask for that source?
I loved it when the guy that could pass for a Wayons brother said that Steven Segal has more emotion.
He watched the show and still made a movie this bad!? He saw how awesome it was, heard them pronounce the names of each character, and saw what they all looked like and still messed it up! How is that even possible!?
Ya I don't know anyone who knew about it. That's why when I tell them, they go, "I feel so sorry for you..."

WILL THEY MAKE A BOOK 2
@LiamDaLemon He may have just wanted to give it a different feel. The story of the Avatar is great, but they probably felt that it may come out better (perhaps) with a different feel to it, different emotions being brought out. They should done a before and after interview with guy at the end who was going in to see it.
zuko's scar is a black eye
aang's tatoo looks like something braveheart would draw (all gaelic lookin) and he was too serious
firebenders needed pre-existing flames (around them) to use their element
3 strikes too many
there was more but then then i'd be complaining...that's what a forum is for
Don't know much about the series, but liked the movie
Why are so many hating it??
@eoublue What was good about the movie. Im wondering if you actually have an opinion or if your just trying to be a rebel.
I like this movie, I love Noah!!! He´s a great Avatar eventhough he is not a professional actor, he did it quite well. He has in his eyes the compassion that is needed for the Aang character.
I Cried When Avatar: The Last Airbender ended. Then I cried out of anger when I watched the movie.
M. Night destroyed all of my hopes and dreams for a realistic Last Airbender film. He'd better get it right with the second movie.
Here's my 1-sentence review.
Stick to the cartoon's backstory.
If you're a fan of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man series, you heard about how Sony pushed too much on Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man, and that's why both those movies were terrible;
Same thing happened to The Last Airbender; Paramount did to M. Night what Sony did to Sam Raimi.
"I'd give it a 7." Who the fuck is this guy?
Both of us forgot that this was book 1 the keoshi warriors and Bato and Toph were in book 2
lmfao there was a dude tryin 2 get it in w/ his girl in the background
@brs121094 do you think it will be good if their did remake and got a new cast that came from this places, it will at be a lot better and interesting
I thought it was a great movie, but to be honest, that's because I was just happy period that someone at least took the time to make an Avatar movie. As I was watching, I enjoyed it, as I paid attention to what in the movie was like the series, which let's be honest, The Last Airbender still followed the same basic story line.
Damn, I thought she was going to find the guy at the end after the movie and ask him what he thought.
The sad thing is I could see this movie being good with the right cast and right director.
It is possible. I don't know how much money they made but maybe it was enough for a second movie. However, I doubt that even Shyamalan could be that dumb to risk it. He messed up the characters so badly... I could stand that they didn't look like the cartoon figures but they also didn't really act like them.
It would have been nice to hear more from people who were not fans of the original series.
