Why does no one mention the fact that the fire benders... needed lanterns... to bend fire? While in the cartoon they harnessed their energy from the sun...

On that note: Why hasn't ANYONE complained about Avatar Roku being replaced by a freakin dragon???

    • @XTestament
      @XTestament 9 ปีที่แล้ว +130

That too! I mean like friggen Roku's dragon NEVER talked... just arrrgh... lets not forget "Comet will be coming in 3 years" VS "COMET IS COMING IN 3 MONTHS SON MASTER THEM ELEMENTS!"

    • @WingedWyrm
      @WingedWyrm 9 ปีที่แล้ว +83

XTestament Eh, the months to years thing would have been acceptable for the fact that movies take time and we'd have to acknowledge the actors physically growing.
But, yeah, getting rid of Roku?
And, the need for pre-existing fire to bend fire? Eh... that was... not... just no.

No... no it really wouldn't have... considering that while yes Water Benders are stronger at Night when the moon is out and that Fire Benders are weaker... they are still able to harness that energy within them during night time.

I saw an Entertainment Tonight behind-the-scene visit to the set and the kid had Ang's personality naturally. He was playing round set, he admitted to playing practical jokes, and he was just so much like Ang that you'd swear he came out of the cartoon.
And then M. Night screwed it up royally by making him act nothing like the character. THAT is the biggest sin to me. All the kid had to do was act naturally, which I guess doesn't happen in M. Night films.

    • @rcdotjpeg
      @rcdotjpeg 9 ปีที่แล้ว +58

It feels like shaymalan just brings you on set and then just sucks all personality and acting skills from you when you act on set.

    • @GeorgeMonet

Maybe it's hard for child actors to understand how to act out a character, or maybe they are simply so embarassed about doing so when they are at the age where they are trying to be treated more like a grownup and less like a kid that they don't want to act in a way they think would make adults think they are childish.

The costumes were so bad and so inaccurate I couldn’t watch. Is it really so hard to make Katara and Sokka’s parkas blue?

    • @Kirkeyressa
      @Kirkeyressa 8 ปีที่แล้ว +55

Fun fact: the costumes have a BLATANT error in them, so even they couldn't get something wrong...
To summarize: for kimonos (let's not even get into the "LOL IT'S ASIAN SO EVERYONE WEARS KIMONOS" stupidity...) and other east asian wear, there's a very precise way the sides of the robe have to fold over each other. In the show, it's left side over right, the way it's meant to be. In the movie, it's the opposite... which is exclusively reserved as a burial garment... OOPS.
Maybe the costuming department was trying to comment about how dead and lifeless the movie is...

The lack of colour really pissed me off too. Look at the Earth Kingdom's cities and towns in the show: they're beautiful, colourful cities and have buildings with really cool architecture and everything.
Then in the movie, the Earth Kingdom is just mud with huts.
It looked like one of those cheap, budgetless Bible movies they made you watch in school.

I don't think I've ever seen a film show such utter DISRESPECT to the source material. From the names to the way bending works to the lack of colour, it's as if the execs were convinced that the creators of the show were total hacks and that they'd have to change almost everything just to make it passable. Begging the question as to why they were interested in the property in the first place.

The worst thing about this movie is the fact that it's somehow far more well known than the original series will ever be. When people hear the name "Last Airbender" the first thing they'll think is "That shitty Shyamalan film". It makes me sad that this is the world we live in now.

I actually managed to find a few positive thoughts towards TLA (minor as they are)
I too liked Aang's tattoos, because I agree that there really was no way to do the solid blue arrow not look ridiculous, so the intricate designs were actually pretty cool
The other thing was a little addition at the end when Yue was bringing the Moon Spirit back to life, I really liked how they had her hair turn back to brown when she did so. I actually don't think that was in the show (though I think that was because her body simply disappeared, which is also cool) so I thought that was a really nice touch.
Really goes to show how bad this movie is that the biggest praise I can think of is two ultimately unimportant details

Do a Hobbit marathon. You'll see the problems.
I'm not even talking about how it destroys so much of what Tolkien built when they introduced Tauriel. When watching the extended versions, it feels like it's a game walkthrough, not a movie. There are deus ex machina so weird and useless it just becomes funny.
Sneak peak: can you please explain the geese mounts that come out of nowhere at /just/ the right moment and disappear as soon as they're useless

    • @oscarstainton
      @oscarstainton 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Dominika Malicka I include The Hobbit in my annual Lord of the Rings marathon (extended editions, obviously). I'm not blind to their problems, and lord do I wish they were two movies as opposed to three. But I'd rather three movies that showed the effort to tell the story properly and not lose vital material, which is why the theatrical cuts don't work for me.
Also, "geese mounts that come out of nowhere" - not to be rude or anything, but you have a pretty poor grasp on birds if you think an eagle is a goose.

I saw the movie before I watched the show. I remember people talking about how great the series is, but I never checked it out. Then I heard there was a movie, so I figured I'd watch it to get at least an idea of what people were talking about. I was so extremely bored. It fails both as an adaptation and a stand-alone movie. Of course, I noticed quickly that it was universally hated. I did eventually watch the show and I love it. It's now one of my favorites. However, if it wasn't for the movie causing the fans to speak even louder, even if it was just to try to convince people like me not to judge the show based on the movie, I probably never would have seen the show. So, I have to thank him for that at least.

THANK YOU, DOUG AND ROB! Thank you for confirming for me what I've been saying for a couple of years - Avatar is a show that should never have been made into a movie because all the episodes, even the filler ones, contribute to the mythology of this world and if you leave any of that out, it cheapens the experience. Avatar is not like Star Trek, which is a series that is open to interpretation and helps writers let their creativity shine. Avatar just can't work as a movie.

Nicola Peltz, who played Katara in The Last Airbender, went on to play Mark Wahlberg's daughter in Transformers 4; she was just as bad.
On the flip-side, Seychelle Gabriel, who played Yue in The Last Airbender, went on to greater things. She voiced Asami Sato in The Legend of Korra and did an amazing job.

When this movie first came out.....I can't remember if I saw an interview with M Night that justified my thinking or if I just came to this conclusion by myself....
But I always thought that he changed the races because he thought, as Asian-American, he thought he had a good understanding of the Eastern homage/feel/themes of the series and thought he could change the races to make more sense culturally.
I assume that since India is known for its hot climate and deserts and what not....Also the many reds/oranges/yellows of the culture....Shyamalan thought an Indian Fire Nation would make more sense.
However....the cultures referenced in the cartoon were strategically chosen. The Fire nation doesn't lean toward Japanese culture for aesthetic purposes...there are cultural and historical factors that influence that decision. Same can be said for the other nations. And I think Shyamalan failed to realize that these artistic choices of the show were deep and symbolic and every last detail was deeply considered.
I think sometimes Shyamalan thinks he's the only artist who can put "deeper meaning" into something.

If I were to have the series as movies redone.
Two movies per season, each movie around 2 and a half hours long (Maybe more) skip filler episodes
Get a director who is actually good with these types of movies
cast the characters as their cultural influence, don't show off Ozai explicitly but make sure you get a good casting
Get better choreographers, and the martial arts expert from the show to help
Try to get some of the show creators on board for some direction
Pronounce names correctly and stick to lore, don't retcon stuff
Note: Leave out filler material that doesn't add much, leave in important plot points in skipped episodes
In general for episodes to skip and keep
    Season 1 movie 1:
Go through the first 3 episodes normally
Include Bumi and Kyoshi/Suki but lessen their plots while spending enough time to define their characters
Imprisoned episode is not necessary, but if time and ability, do it, but not as expense to rest of movie
End season with The Winter Solstice episodes, if needed increase grandeur of the plot, maybe emphasize the intensity of the scene where Roku destroys the temple
BIG POINT: Give Zuko more plot points, like his Agni Kai with Zhao
Season 1 movie 2: this one might have to be 3 hours
Start with some escape scene maybe, and then open with the Storm, Put lot's of emphasis in the backstories
The Scroll doesn't need a lot of time, can be just brushed to indicate improvement in waterbending abilities, leave in hint about the white lotus, since this episode doesn't have tones of major plot points or character development
Spend more time on Jet since he is a recurring character (not too much time, enough to establish plot direction and character
Make the Blue spirit a major part as well
Skip the fortune teller and Bato of the water tribe and the great divide
establish Jeong Jeong's character and plot
do northern air temple, but only for the war balloon factor and to introduce the characters
make sure there's at LEAST an hour for the last 2 episodes, the waterbending master doesn't need to be as long, but keep in the fight with Paku to show Katara's growth, make sure Zuko's plot some time as well
    Give Yue character development
Have aang meet Koh, make him go avatar state at the end and use the water spirits power like in the show
Include Zuko mentioning Azula line (Born lucky etc.)
    Season 2 movie 1:
open with the avatar state MAKE SURE AZULA CASTING IS GOOD
    skip cave of two lovers
brief return to Omashu, focus more on Azula and Co.
Swamp is not necessary, but can be shortened to fit in for Toph foreshading
    skip avatar day
Blind bandit, get good casting for Toph
Work on Zuko's character and backstory with Zuko Alone
Try to include chase but only briefly for characters to meet with azula
bitter work doesn't need to be a major plot, can be scattered in between to show aang learning earthbending
End with the library and Appa being stolen
    Season 2 movie 2:
    Start with the desert
skip serpents pass but leave in the part where Zuko meets Jet
Make the drill a bit more simplifies
Make City of Walls and Secrets a bit shorter, make sure Long Feng is well casted
Skip tales of Ba Sing Se
Show Appa's lost days only briefly and scatter them throughout the plot
Make Jet's apparent death scene very dramatic in lake Laogai
Shorten the forced entrance on The Earth King but make this part of the final act, leave about an hour for the guru and crossroads of destiny.
    Season 3 movie 1: 3 hours
    Shorten the awakening
skip the headband and the painted lady
Make Sokka's master take less time but leave in sword fight
Skip the beach, not enough time to delve into backstory, but include combustion man
Skip the runaway, but have combustion man attack again and hint his weakness
make sure the importance of bloodbending is noted in the puppetmaster
    skip nightmares and daydreams
leave at least an hour for day of black sun as ending
make confrontation between zuko and ozai good
    Season 3 movie 2
Shorten zuko's introduction to the team and leave in combustion man's death
Make the first third or half of this movie about zuko's trips with the characters
shorten the boiling rock considerably, but make sure to leave in Mai and tai lee's betrayal and show it's psychological effect on azula
skip the ember island players (obvious
Leave at least 1 hour and 45 minutes for the last four episodes
    make the final battles good
Needless to say ATLA would be a difficult series to adapt, but if you had a lot of people who knew what they were doing, it could be at least decent, unlike this where absolutely no one knew what they were doing

    • @allowableman2
      @allowableman2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Word has been spread that the producers of the movie pulled the strings
and caused it to fail. They didn’t bother to watch the series, and this,
      along with nepotism
and a mismanaged budget, caused Shyamalan and the show creators to give
up on the movie outright. Apparently the shooting script was rewritten
and taken from their hands, and after filming the Southern Water Tribe
scenes on location in Iceland was completed, the budget was reorganized
so the rest of the film was done in the Pennsylvania countryside and on
      sound stages.
The first draft of the movie included all twenty episodes of the series,
adding up to a whopping seven hours. Instead, the movie was cut down to
barely two hours, and then studio bosses had another half-hour of film
cut from theatrical release because they wanted to convert it into 3-D
      as quickly as possible.
      M. Night Shyamalan wasn’t the main reason why the film turned out bad: studio mismanagement was equally responsible.

What you are saying is true, Shyamalan definitely gets his share of the blame, but many times it's not just the director, its other nameless faceless entities that play just as much a part in fucking things up. It happens so many times, it's ridiculous. This series should have stayed exclusively animated imo. If they wanted to do a movie, just do The Search in two hour & 1/2 films. They would have actually made a profit, the series would have continued even further. It was a clusterfuck all in all.

  • @TheDecatonkeil
    @TheDecatonkeil 9 ปีที่แล้ว +33

Everything was wrong with this movie:
the casting was horrible, with the children actors acting so soulless, not even Iroh was ok. Iroh was the generic old character in a generic fantasy written for children. He acted like someone boring and serious, while the one in the cartoon acted like someone with experience, which made him constantly act in a way that helped Zuko liven up and lighten up.
The racecasting (racist or incompetent) was crap, making the north pole look like Hogwarts or something. The world they're trying to portray is somewhat underdeveloped and fragmented, you can't have a secluded tribe include people from all races. They haven't got to that point and having a "kids' movie" treat race as no big deal in some parts but as a big deal in others (can't have our main cast be asian) is manipulative.
The use of the lore was completely wrong. The worst thing about the element bending was not that the effects were crap or the scenes were lame, it was that it didn't understand that it wasn't "traditional magic". The movie had the characters perform ridiculous dances to summon the elements, while in the cartoon it was something much more physical, more like martial arts: rigid movements for earth, flexible movements for water, etc. A well executed punch from a firebender would produce a flame, an airbender could fan a powerful windwill or sneeze a blast of air... They completely misused avatar Kyoshi, whose whole purpose in the series was to provide an insightful flashback to a time when the conflict she had to solve was confronting her own nation when her king became the conquering opressor, which could have helped the audience understand that in the world of Avatar (and the real world) there isn't "an evil race" or "an evil nation", but that at different points in time, different nations and peoples play the role of villain because of very similar reasons. In the movie they used her to reveal to us the very important piece of information that is that "she liked playing games". Bravo!

Nah, like they say he always looked on the point of crying. Aang in the show was such a great character that showed a range of emotions. They could have made him (in the cartoon) so wrong by doing him annoying in a western cartoon way or in a shonen anime way, but they nailed him. You could believe that he was a kid that had been raised by monks that placed a lot of responsibility and self-discipline on him but who also had been influenced by one of them specially who taught him to enjoy life. The movie version seems like one of a myriad of blank slate fantasy protagonist who, being blank slate and all, feels like too much of a killjoy because they couldn't balance all the, heh, elements properly.

    • @BadWolfRT

I know it's not good. I know the problems it has. I know all about the shit people have gone on about it. But it does have some entertainment value to me, maybe not compared to the Original Trilogy, but there are parts of it I can get into and enjoy. Like the Pod race or the battles on Naboo at the end. Last Airbender, though. Holy shit. I mean people have complained and gone on and on about the acting in Episode I but God damn the Last Airbender makes the Phantom Menace's acting look like Oscar worthy by comparison.

The light-saber fight at the end of Phantom Menace is my favorite scene in all the prequel films. True there was little (If any) internal conflict between the characters, but that lightsaber fight was still entertaining as we had never seen a double-bladed lightsaber in the films before.
It really puzzles me how the fight scenes which looked great in the cartoon could look this bad in a live-action big budget film when we had something spectacular-looking in 1999 (The Phantom Menace).

In defense of Shyamalan, there was an article going around for a while by someone who'd worked on the movie. To summarize, a lot of the issues with the movie came down to both the producers and a crappy budget. The producers are the ones in charge, and while M. Night knew the show, the producers didn't, and it all went downhill from there.
Does that mean I think M. Night was still the right guy to direct this movie? (according to the article, he'd actually written a good screenplay, but someone else was asked to write the screenplay, someone who hadn't even seen the show).
No, I actually don't think he should have directed it (and I' saying this as someone who usually enjoys M. Night's work... except The Happening. Hated that one. And while TLA was pretty to look at it was still generic and flat). M. Night is better at subtlety and slow build, not action.

I'm tired of people comparing Lucas to Shyamalan. That's an invalid analogy for a number of reasons.
    1) Star Wars was Lucas' franchise, in that sense he can do whatever he wants with it.
    2) Lucas knew how to film action and create a spectacle even if he can't direct actors.
    3) As much as people rip on the Star Wars prequels, there were aspects about them that weren't bad.

I am rewatching the show, because I grew up watching every episode of the show. I hate the movie, however. The year this "movie" came out, the "adaptation" of Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lighting Thief was released. After reading the book and watching the movie to The Lighting Thief, the only positive I can give to The Last Airbender is that it's trying to be faithful, where The Lighting Thief only has the basic story and nothing else.

You know, they're kinda right on that fact about the different film genres swooping decades. From 2000-2010, it was mainly the fantasy genre that took over since Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter were coming out at the same time and they had immense popularity. Now in this decade, we are more in the science-fiction genre with series like The Hunger Games and Divergent taking their places right now...and of course, the new Star Wars trilogy coming out starting at the end of 2015 with Episode 7. I wonder what genre is going to take over starting in 2020.

1:10 I disagree, I think you could reduce the first season into one film the same with the second season, there is stuff that could be cut out or put in the next movie. For example, you could cut out the fortune teller and Jet. Perhaps Jet could show up in the second film instead same with the keyoshi warriors.
The third season maybe should be cut into two films. The first one ends with the eclipse invasions, and then the next film is the finally.

Comparing possible similarity between TLA and LOTR is the best one so far. Both stories are about journey. Both stories have ultimate bad guy. Both stories lead to final seemingly-lost battle. Both stories develop sort-of-a-superhero characters. Just try and melt New Hope George Lucas with Fellowship of the Ring Peter Jackson, and you've got yourself perfect writer/director for The Last Airbender.

      1. Peter Jackson should bring back the visionary team of LOTR and help him do book one trilogy.
      2. Say what you got to say about the Watchowskis, the major problem is their writing. Other than that they are talented when it comes visionary filmaking. They should get Tom Tyker(Cloud Atlas) to do the dialogue and score for the film. Also their films are Asian influence so they can use ASIAN-AMERICAN ACTORS to play the role.

    • @kingofsapi

Yes! Peter Jackson, please take a break to refresh your exhausted mind and return to give us a ATLA saga! With eight movies to rival Harry Potter, (2 for Water, 3 for Earth and Fire) get a talented cast of child actors, (with the help of Speilberg as that seems to be his forte) and maybe, just maybe, we can immortalize Avatar on the big screen as well as they did with the show.
Or even if we got all the voice actors back and animate the current comic book series, I'll be happy as well. ^_^

Bruh this movie was from 2010. If you have to tie into the trend I think Nickelodeon was preparing for the fact that the last Harry Potter movie was a couple years away and BADLY wanted Last Airbender to be a hit to fill that void. Because let’s not mistake here Shaylaman’s mismatched directing is one of the main reasons why it failed, but let’s not leave out the fact that Paramount/Viacom’s hubris was a major factor too!

I grew up with this show, thus as a big fan of the show, I was totally hyped for this movie. I went to see it with my mother when I was fourteen, and surprisingly she actually liked it. I left the theater, not feeling angry but feeling utterly confused; I didn't have the critical thinking skills at the time to really decipher whether it was good or bad, but I was disappointed. My mother never watched the show and she really liked it.
So I guess the movie isn't that bad if you're not familiar with the source material. It's still really bad, though.
The only good thing I can say about it is that The Fire Nation was well cast. I liked the actors they got to play Zuko, Iroh, and Zhao. And I'm at least glad the movie exists because the actress who played Princess Yue went on to voice Asami in "The Legend of Korra".

Apparently (based on the same article that included the details about Katara's casting being that of some high roller's daughter), the movie's budget was also managed poorly -not sure whether that might also include some pocketing a little extra - and as a result thinned out towards post-production. That could've also factored into some of the post/vfx not getting as much care as required and/or otherwise reduced to a bare minimum.
At the same time, given that fire & water simulations were much more expensive to create, ILM was developing methods to run iterations of said simulations on graphics cards to increase speed & allow for more fidelity, which would be crucial for this kind of source material. While it didn't pan out as much due to this film's production woes, the R&D was still beneficial in the long run.

although the problem with condensing a whole season in one movie would be nearly impossible, Shyamalan didn't make it easy by restraining himself to 1:30 of movie. Heck, we can take movies of almost 2:30, like LotRs movies! I'm sure one additional HOUR would give a lot more to not cut from the show! They could have added a proper flashback of Aang's and Zuko's past, a small introduction of the inventor and the Kyoshi island, a better showing of the northen watertribe, etc.

it was passively racist instead of aggressively racist. the different benders were obviously specific racial groups in the show and shamyalan just kind of ignored that fact.

    • @boomzilla86
      @boomzilla86 8 ปีที่แล้ว

japanese people arent like americans. theyre not just "us" but in japan. so theres this big part of their culture that basically goes "it can not be helped." thats literally what it translates to. and it means if its something you cant change, then accept it whether its right or wrong. plus, living in japan, theyre not a minority, so they dont experience racism in their own country and they dont care about whitewashing roles. but if you ask any asian americans, they are not ok with ghost in the shells nonsensical whitewashing.

    • @someonerandom8552
      @someonerandom8552 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+boomzilla86 Japanese people DO experience racism frequently, actually. They are homogeneous and homogeneous populations do in fact judge frequently who is "not authentic enough" and who is. Doesn't matter if you're born in Japan, they will call you not Japanese enough if they think you're not Japanese.
The world is not like America in the sense that we don't just sit around over analyzing the shit out of inane events looking for racism. We have better things to do, to be frank.
Also a lot of anime characters have characteristics that are not Japanese. Just because they're in an anime doesn't mean they're Japanese. Christ a lot of the characters in Dragon Ball are actually Chinese. A lot of character models generally borrow heavily from Caucasoid people Which is why Japanese people don't give two shits about the casting of Ghost in the Shell. One they're not that insecure about their own culture like a lot of Western born people seem to be these days. And two, they most likely envision her as a Caucasian woman in the first place. I'm a Western born Asian, I can tell you upfront and honestly, the only people who have any problem with this are the people without solid foundations for their cultural roots. Our immigrant parents who lived through far more racist encounters than we have, couldn't give a flying fuck about such inanity.

userasdf Actually out of the LotR movies I'd say the second was the worst. The first was good, third was only a little better than the second. All of them have redeeming features. The Hobbit movies are just terrible.

Meh everyone has different opinions. I liked the 2nd since things actually happened. It was at least enjoyable to watch. To me 1 dragged on with really nothing happening besides the decision to destroy the ring. 3 had "let's just have the pirate ghosts win everything and make everything else we did entirely pointless"
But that's just my opinion. I can see other people enjoying the others ones to varying degrees.

18:12 I saw that video too. It's even more glorious than Doug described it.

I really, really want that gif of the earthbenders wildly flailing around to float one puny rock. Especially with dance effects layered over it.
