Most reviews from US market fail to mention the 0.6g regen braking that actually lowers the battery temperature of 5n. It is a huge technological achievement that enables its consistant track performance with a conventional iron rotor brake set up. Non-track version of Plaid overheats its brake system within the first lap of any track and Taycan gt has PCCB that would only last a few days of track sessions. I am really excited Hyundai is sponsoring its first year of 5n cup race in South Korea this year and the future sport EV model it will bring to the market.
Tesla Plaid also generates 30% more power, and that extra kinetic energy at the end of each straight has to go somewhere. Not to say they couldn't do better, but just saying they have a harder challenge than Hyundai. And they don't market their car as a track weapon.

@@sqlevolicious this car gives me mitsubishi evo vibes with the way it handles. Like the way you can just flick it in and it oversteers, exactly like an Evo would lol.
I have thought about this for a while and pleasantly surprised to see it materialized. The next steps are to let you customize the torque curve and red line to simulate different types of engines, e.g. V12, flat-6, V8, turbo, normally aspirated, etc. Then I would love to see someone do it with a true manual transmission. For this all they need to do is simulate an idle and a fake stall. If you want to drive in normal EV mode, just leave the clutch out and shift into third (or a special 1:1 "EV gear") and drive like normal though they may need to feather in the torque a bit to save the clutch. It should be relatively easy. They already did the hard part which is to simulate torque output. I'm sure someone in the comments will say, just buy an ICE car with a manual. Well, I already have 3 of those, but I would like to see this in EVs for future proofing. Also, if it is implemented really well and you literally can't distinguish the difference from the driver's seat then it would be a whole lot cheaper to buy and more importantly maintain an EV with 600hp-800hp vs a gas-powered one.
I remember when Top Gear did a video on this months ago, they had a similar response to Matt and lots of UK motoring journalists just dismissed it, now they’re all getting to drive it and reacting like this lol

Matt, 1st off youtube has unsubscribed me from your channel for the 2nd time. Okay, got to drive this car as part of a focus group. As a former race driving instructor/racer, I kinda laughed at the gimmicks. Well, they aren't gimmicks. They are transformative and it's just as you said, the gimmicks give you a reference point that you just don't have otherwise in an EV. People used to CVTs won't care, but enthusiast drivers will 100% love it even though it actually makes the car slower. Everyone will have it in a year, but hats off to Hyundai for doing it first.
So right about having a reference point! And mimicking per-gear power curves!! Sporty driving in previous EV's used a lot of driver focus to connect your speed with where you are in the power range, this looks like it totally frees that focus up! Bravo Hyundai !
I've watched many of your reviews, and for me, this is BY FAR, the most entertaining one I've seen. It's so impressive what Hyundai has done in the package and agree...it's a pretty amazing bridge. Motor Trend labeled this 5N their EV of the year and it's not difficult to see why. 3 sec 0~60 approaches hypercar territory a few years back. Amazing stuff
I know this car moves the needle and puts everyone else on notice. So, from that perspective, I'm glad it exists. I don't think it's too far-fetched to say that for at least the last 5 or 6 years, Hyundai/Kia have become the automotive influencer that Mercedes used to be.
A different way of describing it instead of saying that the car lies to you is: the car communicates with the driver in the enthusiast language. Using engine sounds and combustion engine traits.
I was looking forward to this review after hearing your enthusiasm on the PodCast. Didn't disappoint! Right on Hyundai for doing this! I hope their efforts go greatly rewarded!
@@cormblue In Korea, there's 'INJE SPEEDIUM' race track. Many 5N owner say... @@cormblue They don't use brakes very often due to regen, and most EVs pretty much don't ever reach a temp that requires a slow down, that's only Tesla, lol.
@@sqlevolicious As someone who has done laps on Sonoma Raceway in an EV and then put on the parking brake after 1 cooldown lap and still warped the rotor... I assure you that cooldown laps are helpful. You hardly use brakes in daily driving but on track, you use a lot. Regen only gets you about 0.5g of deceleration at best. The rest is brakes.
Been waiting on this one for a good while now. Did not disappoint in the least. Legitimately the only electric car to pique my interest since the original Model S debuted.
The lack of history, heritage and tradition of brands like Hyundai really does work to their advantage in this era of EV's, allowing them to take wild design risks and 'gimmicks' which other brands just can't do for fear of damaging the brand. It's awesome to see them just having fun, making cars with a sense of humour and figuring out how to give electric vehicles character and personality. Good for them, I hope it's a big success.
lack of history? everyone is new to EV and actually hyundai is one of the leader in this paradigm shifting mobility. hyundai already has a high reputation regarding EVs and they can't do everything just for the gimmick. its all well thought out and planned

I never thought of going full on fake ICE with a manual transmission mode with an electric car. It’s inherently easy because of the regen, which can easily mimic downshifts etc.
I remember seeing a Honda that had paddles, but the downshift/- paddle was just a stronger regen, or it had different levels of regen... 🤔 it's the same concept 👌🏻and regen braking can absolutely be programmed to hit like a DCT downshift. What a time to be alive 😂
While the engine sound options are DECENT at least for immersion, it would be dope if Hyundai either pushed out OTA updates over time with more simulated engine sounds (like the 2.0T), or let users load in custom mod files via USB.
Being able to control weight transfer is what makes performance driving fun. To control weight transfer, you need to be able to slam G forces. It’s quicker to achieve weight transfer through rapid gearing steps than through micromanaging throttle. What Hyundai has done is utilized Regen as the mechanism for rapid G force changes. You also need feedback on the digital equivalent of the RPM set point, and there is no better feedback than sound, because sound is parametric. If it’s silent, you have no idea where it is. If you have to look at gauges due to absence of sound, then you can’t look at your path. We’re human, so sound is excellent for real-time feedback in performance driving.
That was the best review of this Hyundai I have seen so far. I think Hyundai have just cracked the number one downer for many petrol heads who do not like EVs. This looks so much fun!
love your reviews, you always describe the driving experience to where i almost know how it feels to drive. great car, having just left a hyundai dealer for a kia one, i feel like ill miss out on driving one of these
My only gripe is the fake neutral revs sound very pixelated. Smooth out the revs and it’ll be perfect. Thats all in the software though for sure. Everything else is excellent
Wish they gave us more than three options. So many settings in this car and you only get three pretty underwhelming soundscapes? Still an awesome idea, though.
Great video. Really feel the excitement. I was ready to write off the ‘gearshift and sound’ but they really did appear to work very well indeed. A lot of thought by good engineers and drivers has gone into that package hasn’t it.
Yeah. When this was first introduced, I was skeptical. For reference, I have been driving since 1970, I do like EVs, I do have a history of enjoying driving. So, when I first saw this I was like - Ok - but what will it be like? Now I get it, or have from the first review I watched. I'm all in. Great concept, extremely well executed. This is brilliant.
It actually kinda does lol. He just doesnt have ignition sound active with NGB active in this video for some reason. NGB gives the car a 1000 om higher simulated redline and the "engine" pitch gets higher and increases faster than without it.

Its funny that they chose those sounds, when they have the entire history of the combustion engine to choose from. Not a V10, not a twin turbo v8....a small displacement 4 cylinder. Ha! But seriously this looks like the most interesting EV...ever
I was unlucky enough to have owned a 86’ Excel and it worked but not that well and just look how far they’ve come since then. Impressive no matter where you look, arguably the BEST Thing on the market! Hats off Hyundai! 🚗
Fake gears aren’t stupid. On track they help with carry max speed through corners. IE the Corkscrew, if you know it’s a 2 gear corner, you use the gears so you know when your in 2nd gear without needing to look at the speed your doing. The principle is exactly how it’s used in sim racing.
Honestly the only thing that will bring down this car is the dealerships sadly. I think for what this thing is capable of 66k seems pretty fair, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a "one car" solution for that price. 600hp AWD hatchback just doesn't really exist. Hyundai just went full fun factor and you gotta respect that.
i called 4 dealerships until i found one that would sell me mine at msrp then they had wished they sold it for a 7500 upcharge because they didn't know what they had until it was on their lot but it was already too late because i put a deposit on it and had the paperwork in emailed documents for the OTD price and remainder owed. It's a fantastic EV and i have always been a ICE guy until this car.
I am a Porsche snob, but hat's off to Hyundai for nailing it. This is something I would have expected from Porsche or Ford. This is the perfect example of a company looking for a disruption in the market and taking advantage of it. They don't have those customer currently to loose, so they went all out. This car will be a winner. They understand the customer base they are going for.
Well, I've owned 4 Hyundai products in the last 15 years so they do have customer's to Piss Off, but if other owners are like me then we are really enjoying the this takeover of the automotive industry.
@@rodismrnobody Fair enough. I didn’t mean they didn’t have customers, just in that segment, it’s their market to take, not so much their market to loose. So they can take drastic steps and glad to see them do it. There is a big difference from building cars to understanding the customer and customer experience. Looks like an amazing car.
Nice! EV6GT owner waiting for this. Kona N owner as well who knows what N is about. First review that actually gives me a real enthusiasts take. Can't' wait to see The Smoking Tire one take. It takes a while to set car up but once it is dialed in, set it and forget it. Slight adjustments for particular track or road but I like adjustability.
I want someone to hack it so you can choose different engine/exhaust sounds. Feeling like driving an F1 car through the gears? Got it. Supercharged V8? Yep. Big turbo 2JZ? Got that too. Please tell me I’m not the only one who thinks this would be fun
Sat in one over the weekend, and I have to say they got the driving position perfect arm rests are same distance and heights 👌🏻 would love to here how much of a difference the dynamag make.
I've seriously been waiting for the U.S. reviews of this car, and it's not disappointing so far. This is exactly what every car enthusiast has been begging for, and somehow these high end companies couldn't figure it out. We want cars that we can shift (even if it has to be by paddles), and a car that engages us. Instead we get cars with one gear and it's basically you go or you stop, that's it. The only thing that I can't figure out is how they couldn't create a better engine sound. Sim racing companies have been doing this for years, and honestly small modding companies for sim racing have been doing it the better than the full crewed sim racing developers. So why couldn't Hyundai, after going through all of this work to make the first EV that they created specifically for car enthusiast, create an audio file that sounds like a real car? That's my only complaint. I have my Genesis G70 for now and I'm holding onto it as long as I can, but I really hope this type of EV becomes more common place for when it's time I have to make the change.
So TRUE surround sound simulation of engine noise, piped in from the appropriate speakers and mixed at the right decibel levels? Now THAT'S some serious simulation and engineering. And it makes sense why everybody loved it when it didn't make sense to me watching it over video.
Good middle step. I'd like the next phase to be sound design that provides feedback and engagement but also is authentic to an EV (no fake gears slowing it down). It will take a while to define what an enthusiast EV should be. Kudos to Hyundai for trying some new things, but this approach is always transitional -- I'm curious to see where we go once everyone gets used to driving EVs quickly.
I mean... the Charger EV is supposed to start production within the next few months, so it's not like they're THAT far apart (considering that Hyundai hasn't actually started shipping these yet either). I live in the Detroit area and have seen plenty of pre-production test mules running around without camo, so they're obviously getting pretty close. Ultimately very different vehicles, however.

Would love if it simulates a 7 or 8 speed automatic transmission. Not sure if this mode is available now.
I remember when Top Gear did a video on this months ago, they had a similar response to Matt and lots of UK motoring journalists just dismissed it, now they’re all getting to drive it and reacting like this lol

I kind of had a revelation with this excellent video. The sensor experience an ICE gives us is really baked into motorsports. It's not an advancement of the sport to remove those sensory inputs with EV's, but really amazing we could configure and EV to emulate them in a satisfactory way.

Who would've thought Hyundai of all car manufacturers would be the ones to be leading the car enthusiast segment in the EV car segment!
I know this car moves the needle and puts everyone else on notice. So, from that perspective, I'm glad it exists. I don't think it's too far-fetched to say that for at least the last 5 or 6 years, Hyundai/Kia have become the automotive influencer that Mercedes used to be.
If Hyundai keep doing stuff like this. They might become one of my fav car manufacturers
A different way of describing it instead of saying that the car lies to you is: the car communicates with the driver in the enthusiast language. Using engine sounds and combustion engine traits.

I never thought of going full on fake ICE with a manual transmission mode with an electric car. It’s inherently easy because of the regen, which can easily mimic downshifts etc.

While the engine sound options are DECENT at least for immersion, it would be dope if Hyundai either pushed out OTA updates over time with more simulated engine sounds (like the 2.0T), or let users load in custom mod files via USB.
Hyundai said it would be updated
The I5N is dope as hell. It checks all the boxes. 641 hp? Hyundai is not fuckin around

The fake gears are absolutely stupid.
Having said that, if I ever buy an EV, it’s gonna be the one with the fake gears.

These recent Hyundais are great looking cars.
So TRUE surround sound simulation of engine noise, piped in from the appropriate speakers and mixed at the right decibel levels? Now THAT'S some serious simulation and engineering. And it makes sense why everybody loved it when it didn't make sense to me watching it over video.
really enjoyed the video, very interesting approach a performance EVs
Good middle step. I'd like the next phase to be sound design that provides feedback and engagement but also is authentic to an EV (no fake gears slowing it down).
It will take a while to define what an enthusiast EV should be. Kudos to Hyundai for trying some new things, but this approach is always transitional -- I'm curious to see where we go once everyone gets used to driving EVs quickly.
Dodge: In 5 years we will have an EV with exhaust noise
Hyundai: Hold that thought

I mean... the Charger EV is supposed to start production within the next few months, so it's not like they're THAT far apart (considering that Hyundai hasn't actually started shipping these yet either). I live in the Detroit area and have seen plenty of pre-production test mules running around without camo, so they're obviously getting pretty close.

20 min of track time is tough to deal with. These events are full day sometimes whole weekends. Charging time will definitely hinder some of that experience.
20 mins is loads for a road car track day session, brakes and tyres are usually limiting factors more than fuel. And driver fatigue!
If the track has decent charging you could probably do 6 sessions
Most circuit sessions are 20 minutes. This is the limit at which the session will be closed. There are no vehicle restrictions.
