    All these artificial gear changes and sounds reminded me of fake meat products trying to look, feel, and taste like the real thing.
    Wouldn't you just rather have the real thing? I would, but I couldn't be further from Hyundai's target buyer.

      That isn't a good analogy in the first place, but it's based on a false premise. No, most people who eat fake meats WOULDN'T rather eat the real thing. For ethical reasons (among others), they either don't want to meat or participate in the exploitation of animals. Yet they still enjoy the taste and texture of meat, so fake meats are a way of not giving up everything that they used to enjoy while still staying true to their principles.
      But even that's not a good analogy for this car. It's a bridge between the old and the new, a way of enticing petrolheads to give EVs a try without having to give up everything that they loved about ICE cars. It's all about having fun, not necessarily being eco+
      -friendly (even though that's still a side benefit).
      I've owned one for three weeks now and have loved every single minute that I've spent behind the wheel. I traded in my Focus RS and haven't regretted it for a moment. I love manual transmissions, and this lets me keep a taste of what I loved while still offering things that the RS couldn't do. It's nearly twice the horsepower, for God's sake.
      And for the record, my wife still owns an gas-powered SUV.

    • @RoadsUntraveled
      @RoadsUntraveled  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@cabal3747 It's a great analogy. A TON of EV buyers don't want to drive gas-powered vehicles because of the social and ethical implications that come with burning fuel into the atmosphere. Yet (as you stated about some vegetarians), they still enjoy the texture, feel, and sound of a real engine, so fake engines are a way of not giving up everything that they used to enjoy while still staying true to their principles.

      @@RoadsUntraveled Fair enough, but I still don't agree. That's because there's a wide spectrum of reasons why people don't eat meat, with the ethical treatment of animals only being one of them. Similarly, there are different reasons why people own EVs, and they don't always line up. They do in the instance that you mention, but that's only one set of possibilities. There are too many others for the analogy to hold.
      In my case, I don't eat meat, but for purely health-related reasons. I had a heart attack a couple of years ago and stopped eating most animal products to help keep my cholesterol low. I'm certainly sympathetic to the ethical treatment of animals, but outside of the heart attack, I'd still be eating meat.
      I bought the Ioniq 5 N purely for performance reasons. If I was willing to spend a bit more money, I'd have a V8 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing instead, with a manual. I'm sympathetic to environmental issues, but I don't drive enough miles on a personal vehicle to make much of a difference. (My 7.5 year old Focus RS had only 19,000 miles on it.)
      People are buying EVs for practical reasons as well as environmental. People stop eating meat for different reasons. Outside of the scope of what you mention, it's hard to find a one-to-one correspondence between the two.

      Aren't most affordable ice sports cars a watered-down, SIMULATED, version of a real sports car? They are nothing more than the end result of compromises from the concept car, track ready car to what hits the dealer lot. These too are loaded with tricks to trick you into believing it not than it actually is. Some pump fake engine noises (Golf R), most program the throttle to open 50%+ with only 20% pedal to make you think there is much more power on tap than actual. Some make the steering unnecessarily difficult as if to imply some extra control and stability over the normal suspension.
      It's all simulated.
      Do you play Forza/Gran Turismo or any other racing sim? Why? It's fake! Do the simulated engine noise deter you from enjoying the game? Would you be more or less effective if you turned the engine rev sounds off in game? You'd probably lap slower with sound off since you would lose audible reference to what gear you are in, and what speed you are entering a turn.
      The sound and simulated shifting motivates you to push it sort of in the same way turbo spooling sounds do.
      It is simply a great feature you can turn on and off. I like this kind of fake meat.

    "Can they convert the real enthusiasts?" Yes, they can. I just traded in my 7.5 year old Nitrous Blue Focus RS for a Soultronic Orange Ioniq 5 N. And I traded in a Tangerine Scream Focus ST for the RS back in 2017. In other words, I've been driving manual hot hatches for a long time now. But I couldn't be happier with the switch. It's the best of both worlds. And like you guys, I end up laughing hysterically every time that I drive it. It's that much fun.
    You're right that it is bigger, but it doesn't look like it is. It's the TARDIS of hot hatches, hiding an SUV inside what looks like a hot hatch. Your have to stand right next to it to grasp how big that it is -- pictures are deceptive. But I'm getting older, so I appreciate the roominess, and it still drives like a bat out of hell with ICE hellhounds on its trail.

    First, this is the only EV i would ever consider.
    Second...i got notes, because i did research this car a little bit:
    Size. The Kia EV6 GT isn't bigger than this; they are sister cars. While it photographs like a Golf the Ioniq 5 N is something that Hyundai would like you shop against CUVSs like the Tesla Model Y Performance.
    Weight. Yes, this is heavy, but context is king. The Audi RS6 Avant weighs more this, 4950 lbs to the Hyundai 's 4,861 lbs. What's more is that the upcoming BMW M5 Touring is going to be over 5000 lbs.

    Beautiful photography of the changing season here on the wet coast. The interior - particularly the steering wheel - looks like some high end racing sim for a PC. In a holy crap that’s surprising way, not a cheap and cheesy way.
    The car is sure interesting, I wonder how other manufacturers will respond. Great review, thanks Marcus.

      Opinions will vary, but I love the interior. It does have that high tech style, and yet it still looks and feels like it's a car. It's way better than the Spartan, sterile interiors on Teslas.

    It's amazing how I can agree with the overall premise of the review (Iconic 5 N, GREAT CAR), but from totally different mindsets.
    I do not currently, or plan to own an EV in the near future. But I can still look at the segment without blind bias or maybe even low-grade hatred to say something as ignorant as 'ALL EVs lack personality'. And throwing around 'real enthusiast' while showing lack of education on the product or segment. Yikes.

    • @obomasinladen
      @obomasinladen หลายเดือนก่อน

      Up until recently tesla owned majority market share of evs in the states. Teslas have no personality. A polestar? Rivian? Sure. So while "all" is misconstrued, "most" would be true in many enthusiasts eyes. Hes entirely correct. Most "real enthusiasts" dont give a shit about evs seeing as they've not catered at all to them. This is the unraveling of that. You seem butthurt.
