I am literally choosing between these microphones right now. SM7b sounds a tiny bit muffled and a touch too intimate, MKH50 sounds gorgeous. I'm buying it for myself. Thank you for doing the comparison!
I have the MKH50, MKH416, SM7B, RE20 all excellent mics. Loving the MKH50. What you said is true, getting great audio first is a much better investment up front than higher-end cameras. Cool thing about microphones too is that they don’t really ever go “obsolete” or “outdated” so to speak. Great video!
Great video. It’s interesting how our ears can adapt to one microphone and think it’s good until hearing a better mic back to back. I’ve also been toying with buying the MKH 50 for a while, but I have no complaints with my Rode NTG 5.
Thanks for sharing your straight forward and informative test. I really enjoy your content. Personally I'm torn between the Sennheiser and the Shure but must say the Shure suited your voice nicely.
This might be a little long winded. I'm torn between the sm7b and the mkh50 for a few reasons. Maybe you have some feedback and maybe I'll eventually get both, but I don't have that kind of budget at this juncture. I have quite few things I'd like to use them for. Most frequently will probably be gaming for general communication. I also would like to use them for streaming, but not video games. I'm playing around with music synthesizers and think I would like to do long form generative music as well as showcasing more produced music while communicating with an audience. I'm unsure as to the exact logistics of this, whether I'd have to just use headphones and just take a line in on a mixer for audio on stream or whether I could use monitors without those getting picked up on the mic and creating a feedback loop. There's also a group of people I'm in the nascent stages of creating a creative space such as a studio and/or venue environment with. Ultimately with this project it would be easier to expand the tool set as it grows, but I'd like the most versatile point to begin from. I am wondering about the viability of these mics with podcasts; I know people swear up and down about the sm7b for this one, but I'm not as sure about the mkh 50. There's also potentially recording instruments or vocals, though I do also have a fairly good cardioid condenser already. Your video and a few others have given me a basic of idea of sound in particular environments, but it would be nice to get some feedback on more niche and broad use cases like these from someone who's actually using them. Thank you for your time.
I’m thinking the sm7b is the way to go based on all the different uses and environments you describe. The only thing I’m not sure of are instruments but it sounds like you already have a solution for that. Definitely fun to think about thanks!
The Sennheiser MKH 50 sounds ridiculously Good! your voice sounds very clear, clean and every word you say when you're using it sounds enjoyable but at the same time I think twice before I buy it cause it's kinda pricey, good content new subs>
Great video, I know the Rodecaster has an SM7B preset but can you please share your MKH50 settings on the Rode, I have both mics and the RC2 so curious what settings you use (specifically for the MKH50), thank you.
Thank you! I'm using the condenser mic preset, have the broadcast option turned on, and made a few minor adjustments from there. My voice is probably much different than yours, so I invite you to explore the settings to see what works best for you!
You’re in a good audio space as long as you stay with those mics. Once you go above this with boom mics like Schoeps, condensers like the akg, neumann and better audio interfaces, the point of diminishing return is greatly increased. But oh boy your audio will be improved. My 2¢ would be to learn more about dynamics, eq and etc so you can maximize these mics. Because the sm7b can sound better than the mkh 50 with a better interface and plugins/hardware.
@@Z3Chosen1 you will need an audio interface like the UAD Apollo or the apogee symphony or rme and plugins. They you will need to adjust the plugins to suit your voice.

thanks your voice is incedible with mkh50

No wonder why its sounds so clear 1200 bucks is serious cash ola. Looking for more of a dji mic price tag. Ill check out your comparison video on it
I love Sennheiser MKH 50 vs. Shure SM7b and MKH 416. But I need money.
Fair!
Excellent edit thanks for your detailed information!

Always something to learn, which is why I enjoy this work so much. Thanks for the insight!
What would you reccomend?
@@Z3Chosen1hey! Recommend as mics or audio interfaces? Also, what’s the budget?

No contest, the SM7B picked up the least reverb and room acoustics by a mile. Maybe also because you were right on top of it in this test.
Definitely makes a difference. Thanks for tuning in!
If you are further away from the mic, it will pick up more room noise. There is no way around it.
