Ali-Frazier III is the best fight ever hands down. Two warriors willing and able to give everything that they got. This is when boxing was boxing. Now guys just want the payday. I'm very very very pleased to see Holmes-Norton 1979 WBA title bout at #12. To this day, the best heavyweight title fight I've ever seen. And the best 15th round I've ever seen in any title fight. That wasn't even a fight. That was a war and Cosell on the call. Perfect.
+CollenKelley I would have placed money Gatti vs Ward would be there ad Corralles vs Castillo. Absolute wars...no significance but what boxing is all about.
The Thrilla in Manila is the greatest fight of all-time! That we actually have footage of. As the guy said it was a war. Two guys fighting at that pace in that heat for 14 rounds, and neither willing to give an inch, makes it so much better than Dempsey Firpo. What was at stake in Manila was not just the title but who was going to win the trilogy and be recognized as the better fighter. Dempsey and Firpo was a great fight but not better than Ali/Frazier III.
West91491- Very good point and I agree with a few exceptions from this list. Pryor-Arguello always makes these lists yet Chacon-Limon IV won FOY 1982 and Gomez-Pintor was more competitive throughout. Hagler-Hearns, and the 1st 2 Zale-Graziano fights will always make these lists for both significance and entertainment value.
You have some good fights in there but, Zale-Graziano III was the worst of their 3 fights. Chavez-Rosario was a one sided white wash. Ali-foreman is the most over rated fight of all time. -Yvonne Durelle is the french Cnadien who kd Archie Moore 3 times in the 1st round.
couple fights that could have been included: ward vs gatti, barrera vs morales, corrales vs castillo. fights to take out for them: ali vs foreman, marciano vs walcott and saddler vs pep... although the pep saddler fight was special in history
1. Hagler v. Hearns period. 2. Chavez v. Taylor for its dramatic ending. 3. Foreman v. Lyle for the ebb and flow. Big boy rock 'm sock em. 4. Morales v. Barrera 1 unadulterated machismo on display I also agree with the comment made earlier about the general public's lack of historical boxing knowledge and appreciation in voting Ali in three of the "top fights". Other favorites worth the time watching for sheer pugilistic enjoyment: Chacon v. Edwards. Benn v. Eubank Hagler v Mugabi
1. James Toney vs. Mike McCallum 1, for the master class display combined with high action and a dramatic ending... a fight to show to young fighters if there ever was one. The greatest middleweight fight of all time. 2. Diego Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo... the greatest lightweight fight of all time... period 3. Joe Frazier vs. Muhammad Ali 3... the greatest heavyweight fight of all time... period 4. Roberto Duran vs. Sugar Ray Leonard... the greatest welterweight fight of all time... period 5. Bernhard Hopkins vs. Winky Wright for Hopkins' masterful strategy against a slightly more technical fighter, proving that the best way to beat a textbook purist is to turn it into a street fight 6. Ike Ibeabuchi vs. David Tua... two enormously talented, young, hungry heavyweight lions giving their all to win. Should've been a draw, in my opinion, but a great, great fight. 7. Kevin Kelly vs. Derrick Gainer... most courage displayed and most dramatic finish ever to a fight 8. Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Kennedy McKinney... fantastic, high skill, brutal fight that cemented the mid 90's Mexican dominance of the lower classes 9. Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez 1... solidified Marquez reputation as an all-time great 10. Pernell Whitaker vs. Buddy McGirt... Whitaker's best performance, as he had to come from behind to win after being knocked down twice. Showed that an undersized, defensive wizard with feather fists can have the heart to win a grueling fight.
as far as Graziano-Zale series goes I can't remember what the circumstances were for when they stopped the first one but I remember reading that in the second one Rocky pelted Zale with around 40 unanswered punches. The one stoppage off the top of my head that I think was more brutal was Carlos Ortiz-Len Matthews where Ortiz threw and for the most part landed over 100 unanswered punches along the ropes before the ref stopping it. I might of gotten a little off subject here though.
The panel got it right in selecting Dempsey - Firpo as being the greatest fight that ever took place. There is, however, a caveat which must be placed on all the fights selected within the 20 such rights. These fights all have film coverage from which to judge the greatness of the selected fights and in each case the title happened to be on the line. There are so many other great fights that took place where no film coverage captured the moment and, perhaps, the title was not on the line. Had not Bert Sugar not been on the panel, I fear that Dempsey - Firpo would not have made the top 20 ranking, let alone be ranked as the greatest of all the fights, as the purported knowledge of the modernists consistently fail to recognize the true greatness of Dempsey. Not so with Bert Sugar and his historical insight is sorely missed.
I think ESPN did another twenty greatest fights of all time a few years ago if I'm not mistaken. They had the whole crew on this one though, Kenny, Sugar, Leonard, Mancini, all of them. IMO it's almost a futile task to make a list of just the "Best" fights. I seperate them between signifacant fights and entertaining fights and if I had to do a top twenty I doubt many if any of them would overlap. Honestly the only one off the top of my head that would overlap is Pryor-Arguello I.
West91491- agreed but in retrospect Pryor-Arguello or Bowe-Holyfield I don't compare for action to Hagler-Hearns. Holmes-Norton was just as significant (as Bowe/Holyfield) and had more action over 15 rounds. And I will never be able to say enough about Zale-Graziano I and II b/c people in general have no idea of how bad 1 guy had to be almost killing the other in order for a TKO to be awarded which is what happened in the 2nd fight.
Great list now go find: 1. Zale- Graziano I 2. Graziano-Zale II 3.Hagler-Hearns 4.Pryor-Arguello I 5. Gomez-Pintor And then let me know how your list stacks up to this one.
I'm surprised that there's no fight from Pernell Whitaker or De La Hoya anywhere on this list. De La Hoya did have most of his best fights before this list was made too. Then again most of this was compiled by Burt Sugar so I'm not surprised they have a lot of fights before Color TV on here. Keep in mind I love Burt I'm not knocking him, it's unfortunate that he's no longer with us, but it is a lot of his input that shaped this and the 20 Best Knockouts List.
Rumble in the Jungle should be higher. Iconic fight. Huge upset. Social significance. The triumph of brains over brawn. Ali regaining the title. Fought in Africa...
Why do they always focus on Louis v Schmelling 2? The first fight was a better fight and both closer to their prime . Plus Schmelling proved to be the better man in later life, paying for Louis medical treatment . Oh hang on , the American lost in the first fight so must be ignored
@1899sharkey I heard that Joe jeanete vs someone (not langford, i think, can't remember) went about 40+ rounds of brawling. other than old ones, I say Hagler-Hearns
Hagler-Hearns was great for one and a half rounds, to me it was always a big letdown. Holmes-Norton was a great fight but Holyfield-Bowe I was two-way action all the way through while Larry really outboxed Norton for the first 6-7 rounds before Norton started catching up to him. I think the action in the late rounds of that fight though is very hard to match. truth be told though I'm not a big HW fan so I don't have many on my list anyway.
You could also add Chacon-Edwards II, off their list after reviewing it the only ones I would keep are Pryor-Arguello and Bowe-Holyfield I, the rest didn't even make my top fifty favs I did a few months back. The thing I don't like is that you are almost forced to put certain fights and fighters on a list such as this or you will lose credibility with the people who think they know boxing.
What was bad about that fight is that Pryor was legitimately winning and the damage he inflicted on Arguello was irreversible so we will never know if the two fought on the "level" what would have happened. Luis Resto admitted that Panama Lewis did all sorts of crooked things not just handwraps.
Duran-Moore was another one sided white wash, Fenech-Nelson both times were one sided white washes. Dude - Lewis-Rachman? You think thats comparable to Ward-Gatti I or Morales Barrera I or Corrales-Castillo I?
Oh yeah, we've had so many fights of the century but I agree, that first fight against Frazier is easily the best heavyweight match of all time. The only fight that you can argue that was just big or bigger is the second Louis/shmeling fight, but if you want a competitive fight and not a blow out, it's obviously Ali/Frazier 1.
No it wasn't, it was a one sided fight meldrick was landing 4 punches to every one of chavez's.... Just meldrick was feather fisted and none of his punches were doing any damage but to watch the fight , it's very one sided to watch if you don't take into account the damage Chavez was inflicting with his punches
Inevitably this list has a heavy bias towards America's boxing history. If it was an international list it would look quite different but most of the fights on there are all-time classics. My personal favourite has always been Pryor - Arguello 1 - non stop action for 14 rounds and the perfect blend of boxing science and brawling.
'The young Muhammad Ali would have run circles around Joe Fraizer' - If only history could do an experiment for us as to how that would turn out. Oh, wait..
"lol Fenech beat Nelson the first time." AGREED in a 1 sided whitwash just like Nelson won the 2nd fight. Neither comparable to the likes of Foreman-Lyle.
I only asked b/c you asked where was Pernell Whitaker and James Toney. Personally I think these lists are flawed and based on semi professional media opinions. There are fights everyday in Thailand that are bloodbaths and make these fights look like Dancing with the Stars.
@elnegrobembon I don't believe so, b/c the other video containing the greatest KO's of all time actually for some reason includes it. Understand this list contains fights that THEY claim are great just because of the the event or anticipation. And I say this b/c there is no way Ali-Foreman should be on this list when comparing it to Ali Frazier III or Foreman-Lyle (criminal that they had no footage) or especially the Zale-Graziano I and II and Hagler-Hearns. Hell, Gomez-Pintor should be on it.
Louis-Schmeling II was a significant fight and as Americans, we loved the outcome, but it was not a great fight. It lasted just over 2 minutes and was very one-sided. How is that a great fight?
How the fuck is Chavez vs Taylor 1 not on this list? That is absolutely crazy. That was fight of the decade in the 90s and some of these fights especially from the older days imo cant compare to that fight or even Gatti Ward 1... I hate lists like this
The rumble in the jungle was a great event in boxing but the only reason why its considered and great fight is cuz who was in it and how it was won but the fight wasnt that great
Dempsey was not a racist often had alot of black training partners his manager did not let him fight black men because his manager didnt want what happened with jack johnson winning the title causing riots ect, before he became champ he fought many black men
Once again Roberto Duran is P4P one of the greatest of all time, unfortunately his fight with Davey Moore a 1 sided blowout is NOT one of the greatest fights of all time.
Fights you and I like and fights that are truly all time greats on not 1 in the same thing is what I'm trying to explain. Understand that this list in the video is not infallible. But there is NO Lennox Lewis or Hassin Rachman fight that is making this list. -Concerning Chavez-Rosario, a great build up and 2 of the top 10 P4P boxers in the world at that time don't make it a great fight, it was a 1 sided destruction. Rosario was barely competitive and won maybe 1 possibly 2 out of 10 1/2 rounds.
Those were good fights but there were hundreds of better fights over the decades. Gatti-Ward was not between two top fighters and there was little significance to those fights. They certainly gave it their all but that used to be common place in boxing.
The panel got it right in selecting Dempsey - Firpo as being the greatest fight that ever took place. There is, however, a caveat which must be placed on all the fights selected within the 20 such rights. The best fights in my opinion were Hearns vs Hagler and Ali vs Frazier trio.

ichirima- good point as we approach the 20th anniversary of Chavez-Taylor I and 30 year anniversary of Duran-Leonard I
What/!! The first Duran/Leonard fight not on the list?!! It makes many on this list pale in comparison!
well said ...i was thinking the same thing
Duran - Leonard 1 was so awesome - Such great judging - Perfect - Duran by 1 point - So Many fighters were robbed by the Judges in the 90s
West91491- Very good point and I agree with a few exceptions from this list.
Pryor-Arguello always makes these lists yet Chacon-Limon IV won FOY 1982 and Gomez-Pintor was more competitive throughout.

Diego Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo should of been on here
Where the hell did you find this stuff?? :D AWESOME! :)
And still the HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION of the World Rocky Marcino 49n0 R.I.P Champ.
My personal favorite fight ever was De la Hoya vs Fernando Vargas. What a fight. I’ve watched it a dozen times. And Leonard Duran I.
Islander. I'd be interested to see a video of your 10 favorite fights
You have some good fights in there but, Zale-Graziano III was the worst of their 3 fights. Chavez-Rosario was a one sided white wash. Ali-foreman is the most over rated fight of all time.

1. Hagler v. Hearns period.

I cannot believe the Mancini-Kim fight did not make this list. Probably the best boxing I've ever seen. It is such a shame Deuk-ku Kim died.

Holmes vs Witherspoon 1983 deserves a place
Rumble in the Jungle should be higher. Iconic fight. Huge upset. Social significance. The triumph of brains over brawn. Ali regaining the title. Fought in Africa...
This list could do with some Bobby Chacon and Matthew Saad Muhammad.
Why do they always focus on Louis v Schmelling 2? The first fight was a better fight and both closer to their prime . Plus Schmelling proved to be the better man in later life, paying for Louis medical treatment . Oh hang on , the American lost in the first fight so must be ignored
Taylor-Chavez didn't make this list??!!
wow the marciano ko was at teh end and seemed more impresive ebcause it amde it more significant!
Gatti vs Ward 1 or 3??
Surely had to be in contention for this list
What about Chavez vs. Taylor.
I would hope you understand that this video is about "individual fights/bouts" not the best individual fighters of all time?
@1899sharkey I heard that Joe jeanete vs someone (not langford, i think, can't remember) went about 40+ rounds of brawling. other than old ones, I say Hagler-Hearns
how can the gatti and ward fight not be in there
These are the best on film. Graziano v Zale 1 and 2 were not filmed. They would be at the top.
How about Zamora vs Zarate?
Hagler-Hearns hands down is number 1
Hagler-Hearns was great for one and a half rounds, to me it was always a big letdown.

Maywether-Pacquiao the single greatest fight in human history!
Sarcastic comment is sarcastic!
FIGHT OF THE CENTURY NO 1 it's called that for a reason lived up to all the hype rip Joe and Muhammad Ali
Regarding the Fight of the 'Long Count' - Dempsey should have retreated to a neutral corner- his own fault he lost.
Chavez vs Taylor must be top 10.
Mendez Jorge The fight was pretty one sided in rounds but it was a pleasure to watch because of the high technical skills of both fighters.
Inevitably this list has a heavy bias towards America's boxing history. If it was an international list it would look quite different but most of the fights on there are all-time classics. I totally agree were the fuck is chavez vs taylor????""!!!!!
If there was 15th round in thriller in Manila then this fight should have been called combination of World War 1 and 2.
ali frazier 3 was a fight to the death
What about gatti ward 1
PACQUIAO VS MARQUEZ 1 AND 2
@elnegrobembon I don't believe so, b/c the other video containing the greatest KO's of all time actually for some reason includes it. southernprep - no such luck for Mr. Wingo
17:56 is what boxing is all about
You do realize this is a list of the greatest "fights" of all time not fighters?
if hagler hearns had what it takes to go for 15 that would be Ali vs Frazier 3...... get outta here.....
Ali vs Frazier 3 is beyond that...lolz!
Robinson vs lamotta should be higher.
How the fuck is Chavez vs Taylor 1 not on this list? That is absolutely crazy. That was fight of the decade in the 90s and some of these fights especially from the older days imo cant compare to that fight or even Gatti Ward 1... I hate lists like this
Ali as on his list more then anyone, I still think the thrilla was teh best, they were better boxers and it was at the end of the trilogy!
The rumble in the jungle was a great event in boxing but the only reason why its considered and great fight is cuz who was in it and how it was won but the fight wasnt that great
Dempsey was not a racist often had alot of black training partners his manager did not let him fight black men because his manager didnt want what happened with jack johnson winning the title causing riots ect, before he became champ he fought many black men
as long as any fight with meldrick taylor is in it ill be ok
Mayweather McGregor?
just one question,
WHY THE FUCK ARE THEY USING A BUFF BLACKMAN TO HOLD THE NUMBERS???!
@1899sharkey Yeah, it was that one.
MORALES VS BARRERA
Those were good fights but there were hundreds of better fights over the decades. Gatti-Ward was not between two top fighters and there was little significance to those fights. They certainly gave it their all but that used to be common place in boxing.
this list is stupid haha some of the fights here were boring no morales barrera?
Bullshit ... Ali Frazier 3 made dempseys match look like a club fight.
Mike tyson and Tommy morrison are the Best boxers and boxing champions of all ages
Emir Vražlić what the hell are you smoking....lol.And still the HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION of the World Rocky Marcino
LOL look at the fans vote just shows you how overrated Ali was and how little 90% of this planets population know about boxing.
⁰0
demseys fight wasn't better tehn top 2 or 3, and demsey i hear was a racist.... not cool!

Lol Burt was a great talker/raconteur and enjoyable but he tends to gild the lilley ,talk about fights as if he was there .Someone who saw a club fight between 2 evenly matched opponents could say that was the greatest fight ever.Personally I could pick 4 or 5 Ali fights for different reasons
