A lot of the fun in ham radio is the acquisition of equipment and laying out the shack to meet the requirements of a person's interests. I got a late start but have been a ham for about a quarter of a century. Its a great hobby and it can help to fill the gaps during emergencies. 73's.
Well all I can say is, wow, just wow. Your shack is beautifully laid out. And it's obvious you've dedicated a lot of time (and money) to your hobby. I'm looking forward to doing the same. Again, congrats on a marvelous setup. No doubt fellow Hams are looking at this and drooling. :) You can be sure I am!!!
Hi, well depends what kind of tower you install and if it is new or second hand. I am in the process of installing a new tower at mo, hoping to get it all done over the next couple of months.. The tower is being collected soon as it is off to be galvanized so should last a lifetime. not cheap but will be well worth the effort when its all installed around May or June 2012.
@ramirorc sorry do you mean what is my logbook? it is called NGENLOG, its very good and performs well if thats what your asking me.. Regards James G0SEC
Hi Just curious about the tower. Looking at getting one possibly and I'm curious about how much it all costs and such. Good shack though. Stuff of dreams.. 73s M6RKE
Do you find your radios get hot in those shelves? I don't have my iCom in any slots and it gets very very hot... How do you keep yours cool? The vents can't be venting very well?
never gets hot, runs very cool, none of my equipment gets hot, the amp only gets slightly warm but thats about it, this is an older video now see some of my newer vids
james how on earth did you get planning permission for that tower and antenna you must have good neighbours mate unlike my neighbours i have been knocked back by the council two times on a much smaller antenna set up .regards mark
well in my opinion you want a tower no less then 18m or 60 to 65ft min, even higher if you want to escape the house noise and thermostat noises around the buildings. My new tower will put the main HF beam up at about 68ft when fully extended but most of the time I just wind it up to about 1/2 to 3/4 the way up. safety is the main thing, the higher you go and the bigger the tower the bigger the foundations have to be. Only get good winches such as Fultons etc.
Nice shack! I am planning on getting my ham license soon. I found your use of the phonetic alphabet interesting. I have the standard NATO alphabet memorized. So I am used to G = Golf and S = Sierra. Ultimately though it doesn't matter what words you use as long as they are ineligible.
James, Nice Radio Shack you have there! I'm currently on training in order to get my Ham Radio Licence. Looks like you've spent a lot of time and resources to have such shack. How do you think I can start? I mean which equipment can or should I buy to start with my QSO, get some QSL cards and have the possibility to change the Category? Thanks in advance and cheers from Buenos Aires, Argentina!
i went fishing with the son of the man who discovered FM radio waves. boat name is HIGH FREQUENCY. Super super rich but a fun guy to hang with when i was 17yrs old back in 2002. South Florida
nice set up,happy with my 450d i also had a pro 1 wish i kept it but it was just to big as i have my shack and computor in the bedroom .. jeff .. m0prf ..
That's quite an exceptional radio room you have there, James. I do have a question, though. Regarding the cabinet in which you have it all housed, did you have it custom made or did you just happen to come a across one that suited your needs? It looks custom made for your equipment, which looks so much nicer and refined compared to some Hams that simply have a pile of equipment stacked on top of each other. 73s and best regards.
If you're really into it might as well go ALL the way...LOL! I am partial to Icom myself.. I wonder what the output power is on the 7800? 200-watts? Probably more than that.. I'm sure he has the best Antenna tuner you can buy..Myself, I would never have a computer involved with my radio setup.. No computer monitors, etc., etc., etc..
Hard to answer that question, you just have to find out what you yourself like in radios, I have been licensed a long time, 27 years now but I would go for maybe a new icom id51 or a nice dualband handie or mobile as a first and get used to chatting on vhf and uhf first and then go for a good HF radio, most important thing is the antenna of course. James G0SEC
The shack desk is custom made by myself and is made from real wood which has a nice high quality polish. I get asked alot about the shack desk, it took a long time to do but got there in the end and everything is where I wanted everything. James G0SEC
Hi and thanks for the nice comments, I have new equipment since this video, still have the big icom 7800 but alot more equipment.. do check out some of my latest videos.. the hobby is great and i have many friends all over the world... Very nice setup, as already stated. I just wondered about your mast/antennas. Specifically, did you need planning permission for them and are the neighbours OK about it?
+Chris Sommers Chris this is my old tower now as video is very old, i now have a much larger tower check some of my new videos bud... yes i have planning and neighbours are all good and good friends of mine so no issues at all. my new tower is a lot larger... TheHamshack Great work. and yes I am jealous :D The mic you have dose it need phantom powering? and how did you connect it to the sound equipment'? I just bought a mike stand from Heil an a cable so I can use a foot switch and a mic with XLR but how do you connect it so you can use PTT with all sound equipment?
Lasse Särnhult you need to see one of my latest videos really.. The mic I now use which can be seen in my new videos is an Electrovoice RE320, My PTT is a switch I have which is built into my desk. This can be seen on my QRZ page. James
I looked at the video in the link you sendt. but the most video is of your monitors. Do you use Mac for the log program, I tried it but for Windows it is so ugly.
Lasse Särnhult not sure what you mean ugly??? macloggerdx is awesum and looks superb.. i use mac in the shack and for work i use my laptop which is windows 7... I prefer windows for working but prefer mac in the shack as the software is far superior like macloggerdx.. its really good..
I am in process of building a new shack, 4 radios, 2 x TS870's hooked up to expert electronics SDR whichis awesome, 1 x FT847 for 2 and 70 and some satelite work and teh New Expert MB1 from Expert electronics, the new monitor in the shack which will be on the wall is the widest in the world at over 4ft long but not well at mo so it is sort of half way built so alot to do on it yet, will be doing new videos when i can when it is nearly done and completed. Also building brand new custom made desk one of a kind the only one in the world of course.. lol
TheHamshack cool I’ve been looking at the hf+ sdr with another 870. I haven’t heard much about the ee sdr. I got about 4K out of the 870 into the back. 2200 preamp ,1124,

The radio is about filtering ability not audio but the sound from the radio is good as has its own eq etc but for essb audio then obviously the racks help get it even better but just a choice really... best radio my far for filtering and RX and front end..
TheHamshack the transmitt AUDiO equalizer in the radio makes the radio about audio and then they could have build in those other audio devices too, in my opinion but however, even the noise blanker alone makes the ic-7800 and 7700 a better choice compared to that ts-990 or ftdx-9000.
yea totally agree... I think they should of done it so you can re transmit an recording so yea not totally perfect but a superb radio on RX and the noise blanker is legendary.. yes so good on these radios...
