    OHMYGOD HEY!
One of the hottest opening nights this week was for BONNIE & CLYDE, the fan favourite show which won the 2023 WhatsOnStage Award for Best New Musical. The show has opened at the Garrick Theatre in the West End following its initial run at the Arts Theatre and may surprise returning fans with several changes to its set, cast and material...
The show currently stars Jordan Luke Gage as Clyde and Frances Mayli McCann as Bonnie, with Jodie Steele, George Maguire, Dom Hartley Harris and Cleve September also featured in the cast.
Check out my new review video to find out what exactly is different about this new run of the show and what I thought about it...

I really missed the kids in the first scene. Having them wishing for something more at such a young age really sets up that narrative of the austerity that drives their journey. While Frances and Jordan did a good job playing down, they only feel like they're playing down to mid-teens, rather than the kids who feel younger than that. I did really enjoy a lot of the additions in the second act though.
One column really blocked my view of one scene entirely when they were on the bed (dress A1-2 if anyone's curious).

Ah that's a shame to hear they got rid of the kids, the performers they had for the Arts were brilliant!

My husband and I visited London for the first time last week and on our last day booked tickets for this. We were nervous because it closed so quickly on Broadway but we both really enjoyed it! For us the highlight was Jodie Steele as Blanche. She was incredible! The whole cast was great but she was a standout.

Great review! Fully agree with your thoughts in this. One thing I particularly agree with is how much Jodi has elevated ‘That’s what you call a dream.’ I found it pretty forgettable previously but it’s now one of my favourite songs in the musical

Loved hearing Cleve Septembers name. He was my Laurens/ Philipp when I saw Hamilton back then.

Love this show so much. I saw it three times at The Arts Theatre and have already seen it at The Garrick and I will definitely go again. There is something addictive about Bonnie & Clyde. Great music and exceptional cast. I have a feeling I would like this show wherever it was staged, but I must say that I found the intimacy of The Arts Theatre special .. it just felt like a nice fit. Thoroughly enjoyed The Garrick though and remain a very happy fan.

I’ve watched the Broadway production so many times online and was always blown away by the impact of the first and last bits of it (as a reminder, the opening is an immediate view of the very dead Bonnie and Clyde before jumping back in time, which is then mirrored by the ending of them sitting in their car together as the romance you got to know, surrounded by projections of real news articles about them being killed with them in their final moments in the middle of that) I really need to plan a trip to England to finally see this production live and see all the changes 🥰🥰 Thank you Mickey Jo, you really keep me excited about all things theatre

Definitely my favorite aspect. It has a sense of cyclical storytelling. As Hadestown says, "Maybe it will turn out this time"

It’s interesting that they put up the pictures of the real Bonnie and Clyde, because I believe that’s what they did in the Broadway version…
I haven’t had the chance to see the new production yet, but I loved the show when it was at the Arts. I’m surprised at some of the changes made, so I’m excited to see it asap and form my own opinions!

I love this musical, saw it 3x at the arts and then at opening night. I was at the back of the stalls to the side and I feel it didn't have as much punch as before. It wasn't as intense which I think is due to the theatre size. I'd definitely still recommend it but in the middle of the stalls! Just saw Sylvia & that was fab - I'd love to hear your thoughts on that show too!

I saw a very unique show when I saw it. My sister is assistant stage manager and tipped me off. I was Charlie as Clyde (as Jordan doesn’t do matinees) Who I really enjoyed, plays a good unhinged Clyde and great vocalist too. I also saw Kit as Ted, and it was a debut for him playing this role and he really was good and sweet and brilliant in the role. We also had Michael as the Sheriff and Archie and John being the other law officers. A very unique version that did not disappoint. As for the adults playing young Bonnie and Clyde, I didn’t think too much of it. I saw it as they were more teenage versions of themselves as they had their ambitions for life as you would do as a teenager, and you often find adults playing teens in productions - Heathers and Dear Evan Hanson for example. I would love to see it again if they were doing a longer run 😊

Went on Friday. I heard such good things from its last run, I wasn't disappointed. Fantastic performances from the whole cast (how Jordan and Frances were not nominated for awards is a crime). Great score (I need the cast recording now). Having not seen or read up on the last run it was interesting to hear about the changes that have been made, I feel some scenes that were cut would have been better left in (i.e. the scene with the kids). I didn't have a issue with not seeing the shot out at the end (as we got it at the beginning). I was sat central in the dress circle and I noticed the protection not matching up. I read there been some negative reviews regarding the script however I didn't have a issue but I feel people are coming purely for the score and for Jordan & Frances.

"Dyin' ain't so bad" isn't meant to be sung at someone else. It's Bonnie convincing herself that her fate is OK and that, as long as she dies with Clyde, it's OK.
However, the beauty of Frank's shows is that, unlike the immobilism of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Frank Wildhorn is very very open to change his shows in service of the audience it's playing to, upon request of the producers.
That,of course, can also be a curse... As his version of Dracula that played on Broadway showed.

Saw it on BWY Jeremy and Laura were outstanding the Schoenfeld was SRO. Critics lambasted it as they did Dracula, Civil war, Scarlet Pimpernel et al. I think Wildhorn should put Joe Blow's name on the next one and see what happens

Maybe the reason why Clyde smiles too much is because he’s starting become less human?‼ I’m not entirely sure because I need to show in person. However if anyone who has seen the show agrees with me please Like and let me know‼

My family went to a stage production ( Around the world in 80 days) 'suitable for children' that included a great deal of comment on 'political issues' and 'Britain's role in colonialisation.' They left at half time (as did all around them).

Very strange how so many people participate in the romanticization of this criminal couple.

It's like watching a train wreck. It's also refreshing when a show gives you characters that you unequivocally know make bad choices, even though you wish they didn't. They aren't perfect, just like most of us, but at least most of us haven't gone off the rails so badly. I think the only thing "romanticized" about it is that they definitely love each other. It tells a very human story

Saw it earlier this week. Not a fan.
