I love how the fight made it clear Tenzin was Superior to Zaheer. Zaheer has been made to look invincible this season because he wins every engagement he takes part in till this point. But just like with Aang in ATLA, his opponents always had limited experience fighting an airbender which gave him an edge. Until he went toe to toe with an airbending master who knew the moves better than he did and Zaheer would've taken that L if it didn't get interrupted.
Captain Marvelous He looked invincible because he fought a bunch of nobodies. He never even fought Avatar Korra either, unless she was restricted in some way.
Innocent Dude he fought Kaya and Tonraq, hardly nobodies. Regardless the point is he wins every individual confrontation he's in until he fights Tenzin.
It's probably been mentioned already, but I love that Iroh is in Earth Kingdom clothes. It implies that he stayed in Ba Sing Se for the rest of his life, running his little tea shop.
Mats Martensson and that is one of my huge gripes I have with Jinora. I feel she didn't deserve to be so connected to the spiritual world. The only person in the world who should be inherently connected to the spiritual world is the avatar and even then they still need to be taught. Jinora is spiritual...just bc? I understand shes intelligent but being intelligent and being spiritual are completely two different things. Ex of spiritual ppl in ATLA excluding the avatars themselves: Iroh, Guru Pateek, and the swamp guardian. All of whom have proven to be knowledgeable and spiritual through there experiences, teachings and wisdom. I just wish they did something like that with Jinora but they didn't
Mats Martensson but in the avatar universe it makes sense that the avatars are inherently connected to the spiritual plane bc it is apart of the lore the show created, but even then the avatar must still be mentally and spiriutally be strong and prepared to do so...which korra never really is. They also dont go into as deep as I would have liked for her character. Everything was handed to her for ex: airbending, avatar state, and going into the spiritual world

And aang created fire, that doesnt mean he was naturally good at wielding it. As we learn in ATLA fire is both destruction and creation and it is up to the wielder to be ready for which path he/she must choose. Aang wasnt ready hence, he hurt katara but is ready by the 3rd season. And as the avatar you are "meant" to be something. Its kind of in the job description
You say you understand the difference between fiction and reality but you constantly drag the rules of their world to ours to better understand it yourself. Your needlessly over complicating it making yourself not understand the very basic rules of the avatar lore that was made up by the creators. You say you separate "storyteller" and "reality" yet you keep trying to bring reality in storytelling. Your contradicting yourself all over the place and you dont see it. I think youve confused yourself. Every character is meant for something in a fictionalized story especially the avatar. They are "meant" for things, if not whats the point of the story. There should be steps in a story that lead to something. Thats what makes a story a story. Are we misunderstanding each other bc now Im just lost and dont know where we're going with this. And there are rules in all stories that the plot and characters have to follow. Its kind of the basic rules of storytelling
I felt the Zaheer vs Tenzin fight was far more one-sided than you guys seemed to. Zaheer might have hung in there but he spent the entire fight fleeing and dodging. His moves where very linear and basic compared to Tenzins smooth rotations. Despite Zaheers fighting skill it was clear who the master airbender was and who the novice was.
Yeah, and that's awesome to me. When you think about it the rest of his squad were benders when he wasn't he just happened to get air bending because of the whole spirit world thing, so it makes sense. Aint no way he can take a guy trained by his father in airbending who was a master at 12 years old
Don't know. I feel like Korra fighting equalists on the roof hand to hand was pretty cool. Also next episode 2 episodes fighting with major handicaps always makes the main character cooler
As others have pointed out, Zaheer really wasn't much of a match for Tenzin, he was on the back foot the entire time. Something else to remember though, in regards to Zaheer's airbending skills; The Red Lotus's original plan was to kidnap Korra as a baby, and have each of the members teach her one of the elements. Zaheer may not have been an actual Airbender at the time, but seeing as how it's the only element the Red Lotus couldn't cover, it's entirely possible that Zaheer studied and practiced the motions, spirituality, and basic concepts of airbending, even back when he was still just a non-bender, so that he could one day teach it to the Avatar, who could actually airbend for real. Then, by sheer good luck, he gets airbending from Harmonic Convergence, allowing him to actually take everything he's learned and practiced for the Avatar's benefit, and use it himself.
I agree, although i don't think it was only sheer luck or just random that he got it. You said all the reasons your self that could very well explain that he would be connected in a lot of ways to air bending, not to mention how spiritual he is.

Zaheir is not really evil, he just misguided, going the wrong way. Their is a good reason why he got Airbending, he is a spiritual person, he is a Noman in heart and spirit. The true reason why won't be given till season 3. When it all connects together. Tehzin is great master but he has trouble with spirit side, but he is better fighter than Zaheir. Zaheir may be able to achive master if he has more time to train since he only been Airbender few weeks.
If you go back to episode 1 book 1 of korra where they give the full intro, you can see the silhouette of adult aang doing similar moves tenzin did in his fight with zaheer.

This is what an amateur looks like against a master! Zaheer was on the run majority of the fight and he didn't even land a single hit until the others stepped in. Tenzin even held his own pretty well at first when it was 4 on 1 too. This whole episode had me on edge the whole time. Ever since we saw Zaheer kill the Earth Queen, I was worried about other possible deaths. Kai getting blown out of the sky, Bumi and Kya falling like that, and that panning away from Tenzin getting beat on. It was all too much!
exactly, Tenzin was taking on 3 of them no problem and than because of a surprise attack by pai li, he lost. if he was fighting all 4 of them from the beginning he would have been focused on pai li as well and as such no surprise would have happened and he would have won
Brandon Austin Chandler Well, when I mean he couldn't get a hit on Tenzin, I meant like not being able to get that direct contact on his body. Every time he airbends at him, Tenzin literally dodges or blocks with his airbending (and I don't see airbending back to block as getting a hit in). On the other hand, Tenzin was able to actually land some hits on Zaheer. 4 to be exact and this is including when he got ganged up on - I just checked lol. When Zaheer airbent himself into the air, Tenzin shot some air to his legs, leading to Zaheer crashing back to the ground. Then when they both were at the top of the walkway, Tenzin was able to knock Zaheer down to the ground twice (like literal full-on hit by air). Then later when it was 3-on-1 (before P'Li shot him), Tenzin knocked Zaheer back with air.
That last Tenzin scene and the painful closing scene always gets to me. "As long as I'm breathing, it's never over" not showing his downfall is such a heartbreaking scene to watch as a viewer. My favourite character in Korra, who I thought was killed when this first aired. Ugh, so good
I love the Tenzin v Zaheer fight. The detail the creators put into this is amazing because even though Zaheer a skilled at airbending, he doesn't have the same mastery and experience that Tenzin has and it shows in the fight.
I dunno why but I love the little gag with Mako and Bolin's grandma obsessing over the Queen's portrait. It says so much about how the Earth Queen was portrayed to her people, without being heavy-handed or over the top. It's kind of like the crowd bursting into cheers when Ozai took over the world at the end of Ember Island Players, a great way to draw the connection between some of the world leaders we see and their people's opinions of them. Especially when you compare to, say, the United Republic, where everybody currently hates Raiko's guts.
Not only was he not having trouble with Zaheer, he was actually handling Ming Hua and Ghazan together as well. P'li is the only one that gave him trouble because she was sniping from far away.
I fucking love this episode. Tenzin taking on the whole Red Lotus was so badass. He wasn't doing bad a job at it either. If it were just Tenzin and Zaheer only he would have won for sure. I mean, notice in the fight how Zaheer was throwing airblasts at Tenzin from a pointblank range and it literally did nothing. Tenzin tanked the shots and threw it right back.

Yeah, Katara's line at the start was clearly trying to imply that everyone was dead, but at this point I guess we can just assume that in the like, 60-80 years since Last Airbender, she's made other friends in her life.
I remember being split. On the one hand I would have been devastated if he had died. But on the other I think it would have been a stronger story, with Jinora having to step up and lead like Aang.

Yeah most people don't pass on to the spirit world when they die, that is unique to Iroh from what we've seen. Zuko had no way of knowing before then that his spirit was still around.

in the last scenes i feel so sorry for tenzin, he is fighting against four powerful benders to protect the airbenders and his family, and although he has no chance to win he keeps fighting, this is hard to watch :(
Doug Walker and Rob Walker, during their Korra Vlogs of this episode mentioned what they wanted to see after the Zuko/ Iroh moment, where Zuko realizes that Iroh is in the Spirit World. They said that they wanted to see Zuko die, appear in the Spirit World as a younger self, and Iroh approach him and offer him tea. That is so perfect and so happy sad that I want to see the creators do that, even as a cartoon short, even if it isn't cannon.
While I wont reveal the turnout, this episode in particular sucked because they made us wait like 2-3 weeks for the next one. I don't remember why, it was some stupid holiday or some crap lol. Tenzin was a beast in this episode. You can tell he's a master just by how fluid his airbending skills are compared to Zaheer's. Edit: You touched on some good points here, something I struggled in explaining to some people who couldn't understand. When this episode aired, a lot of people were like 'Why the hell does Kaiya suck? She's supposed to be a master just like her mother?' Whether or not she's a master, we have to understand that Kaiya grew up in a time of peace where as Katara grew up in times of war, so did Aang. Their fighting techniques and styles were more refined than their childrens were, seeing as how they didn't necessarily need to be fending for their lives 90% of the time.
You can certainly see it in how they moved, especially when they were jumping up the roofs. Zaheer used his airbending to augment his jumps, while Tenzin was like the leaf and lifted himself up
exactly! and to add to that, Kya, Bumi and Tenzin are all kind of old. If Tenzin himself is 50, then Kya and Bumi are even older so they aren't exactly in their prime ages compared to the red lotus. I personally believe that if Kya was in her prime fighting Ming Hua, it would've been way more intense
Janvi agreed Kya is probably like 60, probably never fought a day in her life, and probably hasn't trained in decades. Then she had to fight against one of the best waterbenders ever, she did better than she should have tbh, she would have been much more elite in her prime like Ming Hua was (like you said)
but Tenzin was holding his own even though he did not take part in a war and was in peace time. And age doesnt matter, Bumi was not in his prime either

They got their lore slightly messed up: It wasn't the friendship of Roku and Sozen that transcended life times, it was Roku and Gyatsu that did since Gyatsu was the mentor/friend for Aang.
Not surprised zaheer was losing don't get me wrong he's a prodigy and a master air bender and a sick martial artists but he has only had airbending for a short time he has way less experience and tenzin isn't an average master bender he was trained by aang himself and he has way more experience this fight was realistic and I loved that
I've honestly enjoyed every avatar episode so far! Especially this season because it brings back all the feelings I had watching it for the first time not knowing at all what would happen next!
What I loved about this episode, back in the beginning of the book Zuko said that "individually the bad guys could take down any bender" and it took all 4 of them to take Tenzin down, and he was caught off guard. Kya and Bumi also gave it a good shot!

Airbenders aren't fighters. Jinora is very close to mastery of the element, but she's not a fighter... Airbenders have always "just run away." Their whole form is about evading and using your opponents energy against themselves. Avatar Aang and the other Air Nation Avatars are probably some of the few Airbenders in history who really had to use their Airbending skills in battle.
wrong. a bit of a history lesson on bending arts in the series, the bending arts are martial arts forms for each nation. in avatar traditional martial arts are just as effective as MMA would be in real life. so by being a master airbender Tenzin is a master Martial artist, and since the martial arts of Avatar are as effective as real life practical martial arts this means he is a master fighter. the airbending martial arts is inspired by baguazang which isn't about running away, its about going forward in a circular way. you don't go straight but you curve around eventually getting to the same destination IE they are still fighters
houseofaction I know what Martial Arts is. I'm talking about their culture. They aren't fighters, as in they don't have armies, and they're not useless because they don't look to fight in every situation. I know that they can fight, because mastery of the element requires learning fighting forms.
Tenzin would have kicked Zaheer's ass if the others didn't interfere. Also, Katara said many of her friends were gone not all. So, if you think about all the characters from the original, including main cast and side characters, a lot of characters from the original have passed away.
About going to see Iroh in the Spirit World, that is a special case. In one of the DVD commentaries, Mike and Bryan have elaborated that the Spirit World is not like an afterlife like state, and only particularly spiritual people transcend their mortal existence to the Spirit World. In the same commentary, they said the Painted Lady, the one who Katara impersonated, was one such person.
Zaheer was a master martial artist, before becoming an airbender, martial arts are the basis of bending, plus he probably had time in his cell to practice before he escaped, but thats why hes so good, and yeah hes probably a prodigy as well
That's what you were meant to think by the way that scene was framed. That all of Aang and Katara's kids were on the verge of death. Went right over all their heads, though.
I think Tenzin was every bit as good an airbender as Aang was. That move at 9:06 is the same move that Aang does in the extended intro for the first episode of B1. When Aang did it there, it was a bit more relaxed and effortless, but when Tenzin did it here, it was faster and in the middle of combat.
we have to understand that Kya and Bumi were the "forgotten children" from Aang. Aang was a great avatar but a bad father, he give all the attention to Tenzin, teaching him air nation culture (obviusly to continue all the knowledge) And Kya actually is not a bender for fights, she's a healer. (if I said anything wrong, sorry English is for me kinda hard :/)
Another thing people don’t notice is how Zaheer moves vs tenzin, this episode really shows how in the movesets zaheer is just using his regular martial arts and forcing the air bending through that movement vs tenzin using actual airbending maneuvers and techniques that allow a more flowing and adaptable fighting style that wins out
Whenever you guys start talking about Jinora and what she can do, you always go to the spirit stuff, but remember that she's a really good airbender as well.

Before this episode came out, the popular fan theory was that the grandmother was the girl that Zuko went on a date with in Tales of ba Sing se, but in this episode they are standing right next to each other, and clearly don't recognize each other, so that fan theory was shot out of the water
One on one Tenzin would destroy Zaheer. No question, like Zaheer is a student of airbending but Tenzin is a true Master Airbender who was taught by the Avatar himself who was also an Airbender first above all other elements... Not to mention it was his dad lol. I love Tenzin, he is a pacifist for the most part but he is a very under rated character in terms of fighting, but the title Master is no joke with him hehe. I would bet he can take Zaheer and one more of the four red lotus. Three is a bit too much, four it's impossible given how skilled they all are.

houseofaction I mean yeah, a master like Tenzin especially an air master can go for to toe with them all. But over time they will overpower him, well people like these that could be called master themselves or really elite benders to say the least. I personally think Tenzin can take 2 no problem, like win the battle eventually (outlast them) but 3 it's a bit too much I think personally. But have you noted his style of airbending? Personally seeing this series for like the gazillion time, Tenzin's airbending seems to be more aggressive in his stances and moves than Aang's was. Like Aang evaded and countered a lot and even when he attacked his airbending was more in bigger wave arcs. But Tenzin's style is more precise and aggressive when fighting and his stance. Like even Zaheer fights more loosely almost like Water bending, but Tenzin's airbending seems so powerful almost like he channels more energy into each attack. I like to think that cause that's one of the other reasons I have why Zaheer was so unbalanced and out classed agaisnt him 1 on 1. His air was just so much powerful and precise. Ahhh I love Tenzin!!
I haven't noticed it before but alot of airbending in this show has elements of capoeira especially if you look closely at Zaheer when he's fighting Tenzin. I noticed at 6:55 some elements but i thought "Well that could just be flips" But the kick Zaheer did at 7:05 made me certain
It feels weird how polite Zuko is now. I mean granted its been 70 years so maybe he learned some manners. As Firelord he was probably forced to be more considerate. But I can just imagine teenage Zuko giving Bolin a death stare when he comes up to him like that.
Because they keep mentioning it, I hope at some point they realize that Katara didn’t say all her friends are dead, but that many of her friends are gone.

This whole episode had me on edge the whole time. Ever since we saw Zaheer kill the Earth Queen, I was worried about other possible deaths. Kai getting blown out of the sky, Bumi and Kya falling like that, and that panning away from Tenzin getting beat on. It was all too much!
exactly, Tenzin was taking on 3 of them no problem and than because of a surprise attack by pai li, he lost. if he was fighting all 4 of them from the beginning he would have been focused on pai li as well and as such no surprise would have happened and he would have won
Tenzin probably would have won, but I remember Zaheer getting a hit, but I don't care enough to go back and check.

Brandon Austin Chandler Well, when I mean he couldn't get a hit on Tenzin, I meant like not being able to get that direct contact on his body. Every time he airbends at him, Tenzin literally dodges or blocks with his airbending (and I don't see airbending back to block as getting a hit in).
On the other hand, Tenzin was able to actually land some hits on Zaheer. 4 to be exact and this is including when he got ganged up on - I just checked lol. When Zaheer airbent himself into the air, Tenzin shot some air to his legs, leading to Zaheer crashing back to the ground. Then when they both were at the top of the walkway, Tenzin was able to knock Zaheer down to the ground twice (like literal full-on hit by air). Then later when it was 3-on-1 (before P'Li shot him), Tenzin knocked Zaheer back with air.
That last Tenzin scene and the painful closing scene always gets to me.
"As long as I'm breathing, it's never over" not showing his downfall is such a heartbreaking scene to watch as a viewer. My favourite character in Korra, who I thought was killed when this first aired. Ugh, so good
I love the Tenzin v Zaheer fight. The detail the creators put into this is amazing because even though Zaheer a skilled at airbending, he doesn't have the same mastery and experience that Tenzin has and it shows in the fight.
I dunno why but I love the little gag with Mako and Bolin's grandma obsessing over the Queen's portrait. It says so much about how the Earth Queen was portrayed to her people, without being heavy-handed or over the top. It's kind of like the crowd bursting into cheers when Ozai took over the world at the end of Ember Island Players, a great way to draw the connection between some of the world leaders we see and their people's opinions of them. Especially when you compare to, say, the United Republic, where everybody currently hates Raiko's guts.

Not only was he not having trouble with Zaheer, he was actually handling Ming Hua and Ghazan together as well. P'li is the only one that gave him trouble because she was sniping from far away.

I mean, notice in the fight how Zaheer was throwing airblasts at Tenzin from a pointblank range and it literally did nothing. Tenzin tanked the shots and threw it right back.

Yeah most people don't pass on to the spirit world when they die, that is unique to Iroh from what we've seen. Zuko had no way of knowing before then that his spirit was still around.

Doug Walker and Rob Walker, during their Korra Vlogs of this episode mentioned what they wanted to see after the Zuko/ Iroh moment, where Zuko realizes that Iroh is in the Spirit World. They said that they wanted to see Zuko die, appear in the Spirit World as a younger self, and Iroh approach him and offer him tea. That is so perfect and so happy sad that I want to see the creators do that, even as a cartoon short, even if it isn't cannon.
While I wont reveal the turnout, this episode in particular sucked because they made us wait like 2-3 weeks for the next one. I don't remember why, it was some stupid holiday or some crap lol. Tenzin was a beast in this episode. You can tell he's a master just by how fluid his airbending skills are compared to Zaheer's.
Edit: You touched on some good points here, something I struggled in explaining to some people who couldn't understand. When this episode aired, a lot of people were like 'Why the hell does Kaiya suck? She's supposed to be a master just like her mother?' Whether or not she's a master, we have to understand that Kaiya grew up in a time of peace where as Katara grew up in times of war, so did Aang. Their fighting techniques and styles were more refined than their childrens were, seeing as how they didn't necessarily need to be fending for their lives 90% of the time.
You can certainly see it in how they moved, especially when they were jumping up the roofs. Zaheer used his airbending to augment his jumps, while Tenzin was like the leaf and lifted himself up

exactly! and to add to that, Kya, Bumi and Tenzin are all kind of old. If Tenzin himself is 50, then Kya and Bumi are even older so they aren't exactly in their prime ages compared to the red lotus.
I personally believe that if Kya was in her prime fighting Ming Hua, it would've been way more intense
Janvi agreed Kya is probably like 60, probably never fought a day in her life, and probably hasn't trained in decades. Then she had to fight against one of the best waterbenders ever, she did better than she should have tbh, she would have been much more elite in her prime like Ming Hua was (like you said)
but Tenzin was holding his own even though he did not take part in a war and was in peace time. And age doesnt matter, Bumi was not in his prime either

They got their lore slightly messed up: It wasn't the friendship of Roku and Sozen that transcended life times, it was Roku and Gyatsu that did since Gyatsu was the mentor/friend for Aang.
Not surprised zaheer was losing don't get me wrong he's a prodigy and a master air bender and a sick martial artists but he has only had airbending for a short time he has way less experience and tenzin isn't an average master bender he was trained by aang himself and he has way more experience this fight was realistic and I loved that

Airbenders aren't fighters. Jinora is very close to mastery of the element, but she's not a fighter... Airbenders have always "just run away." Their whole form is about evading and using your opponents energy against themselves. Avatar Aang and the other Air Nation Avatars are probably some of the few Airbenders in history who really had to use their Airbending skills in battle.

wrong. a bit of a history lesson on bending arts in the series, the bending arts are martial arts forms for each nation. in avatar traditional martial arts are just as effective as MMA would be in real life. so by being a master airbender Tenzin is a master Martial artist, and since the martial arts of Avatar are as effective as real life practical martial arts this means he is a master fighter. the airbending martial arts is inspired by baguazang which isn't about running away, its about going forward in a circular way. you don't go straight but you curve around eventually getting to the same destination IE they are still fighters
houseofaction I know what Martial Arts is. I'm talking about their culture. They aren't fighters, as in they don't have armies, and they're not useless because they don't look to fight in every situation. I know that they can fight, because mastery of the element requires learning fighting forms.

About going to see Iroh in the Spirit World, that is a special case. In one of the DVD commentaries, Mike and Bryan have elaborated that the Spirit World is not like an afterlife like state, and only particularly spiritual people transcend their mortal existence to the Spirit World. In the same commentary, they said the Painted Lady, the one who Katara impersonated, was one such person.

Zaheer was a master martial artist, before becoming an airbender, martial arts are the basis of bending, plus he probably had time in his cell to practice before he escaped, but thats why hes so good, and yeah hes probably a prodigy as well
When I watched it the first time, I genuinely thought Tenzin is going to die here.
That's what you were meant to think by the way that scene was framed. That all of Aang and Katara's kids were on the verge of death. Went right over all their heads, though.
I think Tenzin was every bit as good an airbender as Aang was. That move at 9:06 is the same move that Aang does in the extended intro for the first episode of B1. When Aang did it there, it was a bit more relaxed and effortless, but when Tenzin did it here, it was faster and in the middle of combat.
we have to understand that Kya and Bumi were the "forgotten children" from Aang. Aang was a great avatar but a bad father, he give all the attention to Tenzin, teaching him air nation culture (obviusly to continue all the knowledge)
And Kya actually is not a bender for fights, she's a healer.

Another thing people don’t notice is how Zaheer moves vs tenzin, this episode really shows how in the movesets zaheer is just using his regular martial arts and forcing the air bending through that movement vs tenzin using actual airbending maneuvers and techniques that allow a more flowing and adaptable fighting style that wins out

Before this episode came out, the popular fan theory was that the grandmother was the girl that Zuko went on a date with in Tales of ba Sing se, but in this episode they are standing right next to each other, and clearly don't recognize each other, so that fan theory was shot out of the water

One on one Tenzin would destroy Zaheer. No question, like Zaheer is a student of airbending but Tenzin is a true Master Airbender who was taught by the Avatar himself who was also an Airbender first above all other elements... Not to mention it was his dad lol. I love Tenzin, he is a pacifist for the most part but he is a very under rated character in terms of fighting, but the title Master is no joke with him hehe. I would bet he can take Zaheer and one more of the four red lotus. Three is a bit too much, four it's impossible given how skilled they all are.

But over time they will overpower him, well people like these that could be called master themselves or really elite benders to say the least. I personally think Tenzin can take 2 no problem, like win the battle eventually (outlast them) but 3 it's a bit too much I think personally.
But have you noted his style of airbending? Personally seeing this series for like the gazillion time, Tenzin's airbending seems to be more aggressive in his stances and moves than Aang's was. Like Aang evaded and countered a lot and even when he attacked his airbending was more in bigger wave arcs. But Tenzin's style is more precise and aggressive when fighting and his stance. Like even Zaheer fights more loosely almost like Water bending, but Tenzin's airbending seems so powerful almost like he channels more energy into each attack.
I like to think that cause that's one of the other reasons I have why Zaheer was so unbalanced and out classed agaisnt him 1 on 1. His air was just so much powerful and precise. Ahhh I love Tenzin!!

I haven't noticed it before but alot of airbending in this show has elements of capoeira especially if you look closely at Zaheer when he's fighting Tenzin. I noticed at 6:55 some elements but i thought "Well that could just be flips" But the kick Zaheer did at 7:05 made me certain
It feels weird how polite Zuko is now. I mean granted its been 70 years so maybe he learned some manners. As Firelord he was probably forced to be more considerate. But I can just imagine teenage Zuko giving Bolin a death stare when he comes up to him like that.
