- The Sandeels have arrived back at my local pier. In this video I show you how to catch sand eel from the pier using a simple but effective herring rig and an easy fishing technique so that you can catch sandeel to keep in your freezer for bait or use them fresh, to target bigger fish such as Bass, Rays, Pollock and more.

I just started gathering gear.
I've been away from fishing for 30 years. Now I have time (limited now) im starting to get back into it.
I used to fish in competitions as a junior up n down the south west coast of Scotland.
I never won as there was no such thing as participation medals back in the day, but it was always a great day out, and the tips and tricks people shared was invaluable.
The competitions were a good excuse for the salty ole sea dawgs to teach the new pups some tricks.
Good stuff. Looking foward to the next video Gary
Thanks Chris.
Good to see you are keeping well.👍
I look forward to seeing you using those sandeels.

Thanks Steve, hopefully they won't be long in coming in, tight lines.
I've never saw someone fishing for sandeels from the shore before. I've only ever caught one by accident when Mackerel fishing. I used it straight away as a live bait for pollock and it was amazing...
Great video Gary. I was there Bank Holiday Monday early doors. Nothing but coalies. I'll keep at it for the sandeels. 👍
Thanks 👍
Well done mate love watching your videos pal
Thanks mate.
Great vid as always gary. Will have to have a go myself
Hi gary, you can't beat free bait mate. All the best from Grimsby
Hi Carl, thanks 👍
lovely too see those corbins there. i did a bit of lrf fishing with micro lures and catching a greater and corbins sandeel. good little scrappers and also great bait for rays
Yeah they are great fun to catch on lrf gear 👍
great to see an upload...love these vids
Thanks mate 👍
Nice one Gary! Way behind with TH-cam, lots going on. Nice haul of Sandeels, sometimes as much fun catching the bait as fishing for the bigger stuff! Stay safe & well. 🎣🎣👍👍
Thanks mate, you too 👍
Nice meeting you the other day Gary
Thanks Allan nice to meet you too 👍
Be good to see you fishing for bass with those matey
Waiting for your video
Top stuff mate
Any sightings of mackerels yet
Thanks mate, none yet think they are still a little way off.
Great video
Thanks.
Great video bud, i only got a tiny coalie after you left last week from the rocks
Thanks mate, beats a blank. I didn't get one take.
Great to see an upload again Gary, I've caught smaller trout than most of those sand eels you are getting 😄. I am based in Ireland and never seen a single soul fish for sand eel. is it the case fish along any pier wall in the summer or is it something about shields pier area that brings them
Thanks Terry, we get them along all the piers around the north east in the summer I think they are pretty common around most of the coast. We get them along the rocks aswell as the beaches but they seem more concentrated along the pier.
Wish I'd known they were in... Just bought a load for a trip to Silloth tomorrow 😂
Typical always the same, they should be in for the rest of the summer now so plenty of time to collect more.
First time on your vid. Great fishing for bait. Ive never actually tried. Im guessing sandy beach is the only way. Im near bognor regis so unsure what beaches could deliver
Thanks, yes, sandy beaches and along piers are usually good.
Excellent size eels. Is that a hit-and-miss spot, or do you suss out where the eels are first?
Thanks, it just depends on the tide and the weather.
Definitely know summers here when Gary's out for eels brilliant ....when do the mackerel normally reach sheilds mate? 😃
Thanks mate 👍 usually sometime in June if the weather and sea stays settled.
Fantastic video, any tips/signs that they are likely to be out there?
Thanks, settled calm weather and sea is usually a good sign.
@@fishingintheukgarywood Thanks mate.
Hi Gary, is mackerel season started yet? I am so excited to come to that pier to fishing. Looking forward to your reply. You have amazing videos
Hi, not just yet but should be very soon with this good weather.
Looking forward to your video when mackerel are starting. 👏😃
Any concerns about the big news sea temperature rise off the NE coast .. mackerel might be turning up early
I'm not sure, but I saw on Facebook that they have had a few off roker pier, so they might be in early this year.
Hi gary hope you are well .when are you going off ss pier for the mackerel?
Hi Richard, I'm hoping to get out a few times this week and get a video up asap.
Have you heard any mackerel getting caught recently gary?
Just a few off roker pier haven't heard of any off shields yet.
Being a newbie. I thought these were dug from sandy/shingle high tide beaches. Thanks and any tips like where to try ?
Piers, harbours and along beaches would be good places to try.
Hi Gary, second or third of your videos I've come across.
Never knew South Shields was so beautiful! Closest I've ever come was staying with an Army mate in Blackhall back in the late 1980s whilst we were serving together.
Quick question about your reel, if I may? I also have a Daiwa Ninja, mines the 3000 size with a double handle, lovely reel, very light, smooth as silk with a great drag. I bought it for freshwater, perch, pike, zander, brown trout. I have a couple of reels for saltwater, my favourite being the Penn Pursuit IV in 4000 size, easily the best reel for double the money!!! I do some LRF type fishing here in Cornwall, but am always worried to use the Ninja near saltwater. How's yours stood up? Do you just rinse in freshwater after a session? Do you use and oil/grease?
Thanks, mate, I've sub'd and ALWAYS Like your videos before I've even started watching them. 👍
Tight lines.
Hi Pilz E, I try not to get my reals wet, but I haven't had a problem with using them for saltwater fishing. I would usually only rinse them in fresh water if I drop them on sand or in saltwater. I bought the small pack of penn oil and grease and use it on all of my reels at the start of the year if they need it. Thanks for subbing and watching.
Tight lines.
@@fishingintheukgarywood Yeah, I got ya, I think I might cry a little if I drop any of my reels into the sea! I've seen the Penn oil on Amazon, so I'll grab some and get my wee Ninja out for some sea fun.
Thank you for your help, may your next catch be a PB! 😁
Hello what season the sandeels is the most ? 😀
Hello, usually July and August.
Where are you fishing mate?
South shields pier mate.
good job, if you could take 3 seconds to zoom in on the stunned beast, because you see, we are in town very far from the sea and these fish look interesting, thank you
Thanks, I will the next time. 👍
Lovely video Gary… any Mackerel yet ..
Thanks Paul, none yet.
