Whitney later said that she had absolutely no idea people would have been so moved by her performance. She didn't think that she had done anything particularly special with her singing or arrangement of the song. She was very touched that her performance meant so much to so many people. That's how you know you're bad ass, when you can sound this magical, and not even dwell on it! On this day of February 11th, the two year anniversary of my favorite entertainers passing, I watch this video to honor this wonderful human being, reflect on the tremendous impact she had on the music industry, and to remember her legacy.
Whitney has said in many interviews about singers who lip sync, is that is something she doesn't like, nor does she do it. We always got her as the instrument, not some teeny bopper up there shaking her goods to get the crowd rowed. This is what sets her apart
***** If you think Francis Scott Key would be turning over in his grave because of this performance, you would most likely be sadly mistaken. This is our country, this is our song, and we are free. Free to interpret this song the way we so do choose.
the best part of it all is that she literally looks like she just walked out on there without any preparation. it's like she was just sitting on her couch watching tv, and then they called her up like "hey whitney, we need you to sing the anthem" and she just did it. she just gave the strongest performance of the national anthem EVER, and it seemed like she wasn't even trying.
Exactly effortless, flawless, perfection. Not to be outdone in our lifetime. And no Whitney did not lip sync this no need to she's gifted. And even that comment is a testiment to her perfection.
Sylvia Ssonko I don't even care if she lip synced or not, because regardless, it's still her voice. She recorded that with HER voice, so no matter what way you look at it, it's still her singing that song in the most perfect way possible.
Michel Nassar The First time I saw her sing this was when I bought her Greatest Hits DVD. I got goosebumps from not only her performance but the crowd's reaction to her performance. She just sang it like nobody else and she made everyone stand up and roar with applause. I was *very* impressed with her performance but did she have to wear that daggy outfit ?? She looks like she stopped in to sing after going jogging. A nice gown would've done nicely. I am a huge fan of hers though and she gave an amazing performance. 👍 *Nobody* can take that away from her.
I don't live in America. I'm not an American citizen. But the first time I've heard this, it gave me goosebumps. I've listened to it just now, and I felt more goosebumps. I mean... the way she pronounced every word, you can hear her heart being sung out; you can hear her singing what's in her soul; she's not just hitting the notes--she's putting herself into the song. How I wish that our national anthem can also be sung like this.
I think every time the National Anthem is played it should be this recorded version, I am tired of people trying to put their own spin on it, her voice was something else.
People must keep in mind that this was during the height of Desert Storm Desert Shield and a very emotional time for our country. As a Combat Veteran I can’t do anything but let the tears fall while listening to Whitney put her heart and soul into her rendition of the National Anthem. Many sing the anthem to showcase their talents but Whitney sung this to touch the hearts and spirits of the American people and bring comfort, strength and pride during that difficult time.
@Pharoe29: This is so incredibly well said...especially the part about many artists using this song as a 'vehicle' to showcase their vocal abilities but Whitney sang it to bring comfort and instill pride. A thousand thanks for your service to this country. Please know that you and all of our veterans are deeply appreciated. Have an amazing day. :)
I remember watching this on tv. While she was singing, the blue angels (or maybe just regular air force) did the fly over missing man formation. That with this amazing passionate performance made even my Dad shed a tear that day. God Bless our Veterans and God Bless America.
I'm a 75 yr old white Southerner saying this. No one has ever sung this song so beautifully. Some renditions of songs need to be retired, like football jerseys. I could listen to Whitney's version for the rest of my life---and Ray Charles singing America the Beautiful. God blessed us with their voices.
Boy, oh boy. If only Whitney had known what she was getting herself into... Not only would she perform this brilliantly, but the performance would become one that would last and be remembered for a lifetime. Oh, did I mention that it would be widely known as one of the best renditions to date?
Whitney is the best voice ever, nobody can be compared with whitney, but now there are singers that sing as good in live as with "autotune" their autotune can not be named autotune because there's no autotune, singers like beyonce sing better in live
It was NOT pre-recorded. Just study her lip movement and the instant song! This was a dead-on live event and Whitney NAILED it! Nobody has come close ever since or even before!
***** It was pre-recorded. It had to be timed with the jet fly-over for TV. Yes, WH was obviously singing during the performance, but her mike wasn't live. She was lip-syncing her own performance. Somewhere on the 'net the music producer of this Super Bowl explains all this. Doesn't change a thing, though. The most amazing voice of our generation and one of her most iconic performances. Once in a life time. Miss you, Whitney. RIP.
Never be another like her. She looked like she just finished a light afternoon jog...stopped by the game..."Oh...you want me to sing? Sure!"...lol No prep needed, no special effects, no anxiety ....and really the band wasnt even needed...lol.... just raw natural God given voice belting out perfectly every single note. RIP angel.
LMFAO so true tho! I'm literally tearing up as I listen to this like wtf 😂 there will NEVER B another Whitney this was absolutely SOUL SNATCHING bro I'm not the same lol R I P beautiful 😂😂😂
My friend my neighbor...I’m so proud to have been a neighbor here in New Jersey USA living down the street of this gifted amazing singer Whitney Houston. I’d see her at times walking down the street exercising from my window and was always amazing to say to my self , WOW.. this is Whitney Houston . I had times to chit chat with her and even hugged a few times throughout the years .. I miss you so Much !!
2:47 "For the land of the freeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" I got goosebumps. Fucking amazing, was Whitney Houston. Simply jaw dropping, at least for me. Rest in paradise to a legend.
I was in the US Army Infantry in the desert when this happened. I learned of it when I came home. The support felt good, and I thank you all for that! Now, can we all come together to see humanity as one entity, and point our efforts in that direction?
I have to watch this after any time I watch a different singer do this. It's not just the voice. It's the whole delivery - straightforward, exuberant, a full rounded sound and a steady build through to the end. This is the height of this song's potential - the manifestation aligned with the meaning.
It makes me so happy to see how proud she looks at the end cuz it's like she's thinking "I did it, and I'm so proud of myself and I did believe in myself" and I just can't stop being happy about how happy she looks
I well up with tears every time. Show me a single performance of this that sounds even close. The voice, her beauty. It's almost too much. And proved too much to handle. I wish she knew how wonderful she was.
This is what the writer's of THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER meant when the song was written. Not overly soulful bs, or the bland country version. Whitney Houston sang this song with pure perfection. All other singers can try as they may, but this the definitive perfect version of the national anthem.
Lol it's funny you say that because she planned on doing a soulful, gospel type version until she heard the orchestra play days after she recorded her initial version.
To this day, Whitney Houston’s rendition of the National Anthem is the best there is and probably will ever be. In my honest opinion, no one will top her. Period
qarahiyo man I tear up every single time. It's that powerful. It stirs up so many emotions within you that it's hard to hold back. Amazing moment in time.
qarahiyo the reason you cried was because this version was inspired by God almighty. Hi better musician and a composer all together for nearly 50 years and I have never heard a composition so moving in all of my life...
You can't "fake" a voice like this... This rendition is the GOAT.... What a powerful voice.. This is the GOLDEN standard of national anthems for over 20 years.. And STILL no one has EVER singed it like this to this very day..
This was the most moving version of our national anthem I have heard. We were at war and the veterans who were over there during Desert Storm said this was the best they ever heard. They could feel the support we were all giving them.It let them know we cared about them and were encouraged to go all out to win and return home.
WHich veterans said that? All of them? Just compliment the singing and dont embelish it with general all inclusive false statements. I am sure som may have said that but as a veteran I can say most were NOT watching a football game during the moment she sang this. Most were in the field.
David Todd Singleton I usually react poorly to dismissive statements and insist that the writer prove the point, but there is no reason to do so now and I defy anyone to show otherwise.

Her voice showed the purity of her genius, and made the song royal and befitting of our great America. Others did a great job too, especially Jennifer Hudson, and even Fantasia. God has really blessed so many people with so many unique and beautiful voices. I know there is a God.
As a kid I thought I was the only one in the world who LOVED Whitney..I was just the only one in my family...I love to look at her vids and read comments from people who love her just as much! RIP Whitney...as a kid u not only taught me how important it was to love myself (Greatest love of all) u also made me realized how blessed I was becuz if I grew up during this present time with this noise they call music...smh...
Whitney NAILED it with her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner...I remember when she sang it and NO ONE has even come close to the way she sang it NO ONE !!!! Still cant believe that she is no longer on this earth...may she rest in sweet peace :) She is terribly missed :(
A Lost Beauty R.I.P. Whitney Houston. I told myself I wouldn't cry if I felt so & I did get emotional. I'm glad I got to hear your voice at an early age through my mom. I wish my voice sounded as good as yours, maybe one day...
This was undeniably the best performance of the National Anthem. PERIOD. It puts a lump in your throat if you care anything about this country. Oh and for those that try to throw stones . . . she did this same version, with the same notes, same range, Same power a couple of months later to welcome troops home. As far as the " recording", that was a release AFTER the 2001 attacks. Whitney sang this TEN YEARS earlier in 1991
Chills! listen to the intensity of her words.. she is depicting the emotion I felt when I swore to serve this country.. I will never forget. Forever proud to serve.
meikoblock - Yes, the low range was absolutely perfect, especially when it seamlessly transitioned from low to higher ranges. Great technique and musicality. Whitney put on a master class.
wow, nearly brought me to tears, and i'm not even American! i listened to others' renditions before hers 'coz i wasn't aware that hers was considered by many as the best one, then i clicked on this vid, and wow, just wow! so much emotion! i don't think i'd be watching anyone else's version any more.
God I get chills every time! It’s so effortless, strong, and clean. You see many singers today try to do so much with this song, but I feel Whitney just let the song do the work while she sang it with pride. Idk, just my opinion
no one could ever sing the National Anthem better or any other song better than Whitney Houston. It is a shame we do not have that special voice any more
if this rendition isn't the best, then there shall be no others too. Because Houston's rendition of this song is simply UNSTOPPABLE in any sense, any means.
Well...im telling yall..there will never ever be anyone that can or could top the beautiful miss Whitney Houston💜💜💜...When God created her, he broke the mould after and gentley kissed her vocal chords....and the greatest singing star was born "MISS WHITNEY HOUSTON"💛💛💛
I lived this moment. Say what you will BUT my God when she just leans back and lets her voice go........it is the most beautiful thing in the world. God bless her soul. I imagine her voice just echoing off the fabric of space and time. When we say her name she lives again.
Lord have mercy I am crying with tears running down my face Whitney Houston singing the Star Spangled Banner Whitney Elizabeth Houston she made history she stand up there with a microphone and she sing from the bottom of her heart if you look closely her veins was popping out of her neck that is real singing the type of gift that she has come once in a lifetime she was very special and a unique talent only God Himself gave Whitney that voice no female today Star Spangled Banner its on the radio for almost 3 months Whitney Star Spangled Banner its on iTunes and she got it back on the radio back in 2001 and one because of what happened in September 11th Whitney Houston is a legend I don't care what anybody says about her it does not matter she is more than her addiction she was outstanding performer and nobody can take her place I love her from the bottom of my heart she made history African American female singing the Star Spangled Banner was so much pride Whitney love being American and she showed it by singing this performance outstandingly may her soul rest in peace her legend will live on forever because real legends never ever die
I remember watching this live the first time. Rewatching it today, it gave me chills and made me yearn for a time when our country was not so divided. See folks, this is what it means to have pride in your country.
She just opened her mouth and made it look effortless. Best performance of the Star Spangled Banner EVER. I cry every time I hear her sing this. God bless Whitney
I watch this every July 4th. Effortless. That is true talent. Miss all the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. Thank you. Miss whitney too. God bless them and God bless America. Celebrate!
You clearly don't have a clue what lip synching is. (1) Whitney DID lip synch. It's been confirmed by her musical director in this performance, and by numerous media outlets such as ABC and The Washington Post. (2) Lip synching does not mean you're just moving your lips and producing no sound. I'm so sick of explaining this to ignorant folk. Lip synching means you're actually singing to a DEAD MIC. Whitney was singing, and the only people who heard her live vocals, were the people immediately standing within 20 feet of her. Everyone else heard a pre-recorded track she did earlier, for technical purposes.
This is the first I've heard this. Never known Whitney to lip sync. It's kinda absurd for someone of her astronomically superior vocal prowess. That's a surprise.
Nobody has ever done it better. The best there is, the best there was, the best there ever will be.
Dixie Chicks did !
I would perhaps agree if she had been singing live. The vocals were pre-recorded.
Tigergirl44 But, it still her voice, her recording and the perdormance was still it.
jubbadupa lol that's funny
Tigergirl44 No...you are wrong. Go listen to the Ricky Minor interview on Access Hollywood live.

Khemistry thank you
Beautifully said🤗 I was and always will be a fan of Whitney Houston. I always loved her rendition of The National Anthem ❤️
no female singer I dont care who can blow will top whitney's singing this. her range and voice control is impeccable!

Tears fall EVERYTIME she says land of the “FREE” can’t help it. Nobody will ever sing this as heavenly as she did. Pure heaven sent voice.
I remember watching Whitney sing this when I was a teenager. Had goosebumps then and still get goosebumps now. R.I.P Whitney
By far this is the greatest anthem performance ever. Love Whitney. R.I.P. baby girl.
Best performance ever of the National Anthem. Whitney had an amazing voice.
Whitney sang this TEN YEARS earlier in 1991
I honestly feel it is impossible to sing this better...the greatest rendition EVER! Thank you Whitney for swelling our hearts with pride!!!
Chills! listen to the intensity of her words.. she is depicting the emotion I felt when I swore to serve this country.. I will never forget. Forever proud to serve.
Obviously she can sing the high notes but she also perfectly sings the low notes as well. It's all around amazing performance.
meikoblock - Yes, the low range was absolutely perfect, especially when it seamlessly transitioned from low to higher ranges. Great technique and musicality. Whitney put on a master class.
A lot of great singers have sung this song...but man...the way I feel when she sings it is something different. Def makes me proud to be an American
wow, nearly brought me to tears, and i'm not even American! i listened to others' renditions before hers 'coz i wasn't aware that hers was considered by many as the best one, then i clicked on this vid, and wow, just wow! so much emotion! i don't think i'd be watching anyone else's version any more.
I remember watching this while I was in Desert Storm. I was already in love with her but WOW! Put me over the edge! We lost a Great One.
Phenomenal, I love how she waivers between delicate and powerful.
I'm getting chills right now, and I've seen this so many times.
So sad her life ended in such a lonely way. RIP Whitney!

And we're back again after Chaka Kahn chopped it up some more.
I lived this moment. Say what you will BUT my God when she just leans back and lets her voice go........it is the most beautiful thing in the world. God bless her soul. I imagine her voice just echoing off the fabric of space and time. When we say her name she lives again.
Whitney, you will be FOREVER loved and missed. THE VOICE.
NOBODY and I mean NOBODY never came close to singing the national anthem as flawless and effortless as Whitney! NOBODY!!!! God bless our soldiers.
Of course it was effortless because she lip-synced

I remember watching this live the first time. Rewatching it today, it gave me chills and made me yearn for a time when our country was not so divided. See folks, this is what it means to have pride in your country.
Aside from the great power, it's the emotion. Hearing her sing our country's anthem just makes you well up with pride!
Her voice is and will always be unparalleled just amazing
best rendition of our national anthem, bar none, no debates. 10,000 years from now and this will still never be topped.
She just opened her mouth and made it look effortless. Best performance of the Star Spangled Banner EVER. I cry every time I hear her sing this. God bless Whitney

Because it is the most fitting and proper response to such a thing.
I watch this every July 4th. Effortless. That is true talent. Miss all the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. Thank you. Miss whitney too. God bless them and God bless America. Celebrate!
I cry every time I hear her. There's never been a greater voice nor will there ever be!!!😊
Her voice, her technics, her passion, just perfect!
Do u not see the veins popping out of her neck?!?! She is not lip syncing
THANK YOU!
the voice is entirely hers. a thing of a beauty , ugh !
Khemistry yup i heard that she did lip sing it was someone else singing it
most beautiful voice I've ever heard
I'm not American and I'm crying. May God bless America! Be proud of your nation!
Thank you
The greatest voice ever with vocal clarity throughout the range. We may never again hear a voice like this in our lifetimes . She will be missed.
