      I live right down the street from a place called Grocery Outlet that is AMAZING. They have MUSH for $1.99 each, which I think is a great deal. But what Geoffrey said early really hit me - think of all of that plastic and how bad it is for the environment. Today's MUSH is the last one. I have oats. I have maple syrup. I have chia seeds, blueberries, pecans, and walnuts. I'm just missing coconut milk (as per MUSH's ingredients, anyway). I'm avoiding dairy, so I won't be using regular milk or yogurt.

    Thanks so much for this video! I ordered a ton of Oats Overnight to get ideas for my own flavors and ingredients, and I'm testing some dupes now. I really like that they're shelf-stable and that I don't have to do any measuring every two - three days to have oats ready every morning.
    Going to try to make my own packets in large batches so I'm prepped for a month. HUGE step up from Carnation Instant Breakfast, which was the only way I could get myself to eat breakfast in the past.

    I hadn’t realized people bought them pre-made! We’ve been doing it old school for six or seven years. I like them more than my husband, but we both like blitzing them (maybe a different ratio) in the blender for a smoothie. Pinterest was my go-to then, but if “the kids” are spending $1500 a year on this, I’m glad you’re showing them how to save most of that. I think you can pick up those mason jars for next to nothing, too, which is also greener than pre-packaged. Thank you for some new recipes. I’m partial to blueberry maple and vanilla peach and Pb (powder) and berries. I’m think amarena cherries and almond would be great.

    Your overnight oats are a lot fancier than mine, I need to step up my game! My biggest surprise here is that people buy Overnight Oats products, there's really not much simpler you can do for breakfast. I saved a lot of money, on buying breakfast on the way to work once I started doing these.

    • @GeoffreyAlan
      @GeoffreyAlan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also find it surprising the people pay for overnight oats! I think all these ads have convinced people that it's complicated to do (which it's clearly not). I love having a homemade breakfast -- I'd rather save money on functional meals and splurge on a night-out for something more special :) Thanks for watching!

    I've always been reluctant to try overnight oats as I'm not a huge fan of traditional oatmeal unless its those crappy instant packet types. But I recently picked up some Mush from Costco (albeit much cheaper than their website) and was subsequently hooked on them. Wasn't able to find it in store last time I checked, and have been looking for a recipe most similar to theirs, so thank you! I'm so excited to try the blueberry and pumpkin pie ones! The added savings and lack of wasteful packaging are a definite plus.

    I love the dark chocolate flavor of mush. Man, it's my favorite. Trader Joe's has a cheaper overnight oats option - also good. I want to experiment with my own stuff but Dark chocolate Mush is soooo good and I am afraid to even try replicate it lol. I already bought the date nectar (mush says to contain dates), vanilla bean paste and some good cocoa. I will try, and hopefully, I will hit that same flavor.

    • @GeoffreyAlan
      @GeoffreyAlan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The date nectar is tasty! I bought the “Just Dates” brand when making Brussels sprouts last fall. Ended up using it in coffee and oat recipes too. I think it’s a good sub for any liquid sweetener (honey, agave, corn syrup, etc)

    Amazing recipe! I know you mentioned you can make a large batch and portion it out for the flavors. Do you haven to have the recipe for a batch that will perhaps last you the 3 days? Thanks again!

    • @GeoffreyAlan
      @GeoffreyAlan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t have a batch recipe written, but if you take the “base” recipe and multiply out the oats, seeds, and liquid that’ll get you to a solid foundation. The recipe is really unfussy, so you can kind of eyeball and approximate ingredients and still get a good result. When I make a big batch I just dump ingredients without measuring. Err on the side of not adding enough liquid; if too thick in the morning, it’s easy to adjust with some extra to thin it down slightly.

    • @GeoffreyAlan
      @GeoffreyAlan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! Protein powder works well - either vanilla or chocolate depending on what you’re making. Definitely add extra liquid to keep the consistency how you like it (I’ve found 2-4oz generally works well).

    Hi there thank you for these recipes, quick questions, do you know the ration would be is using cold brew coffee? figured i would ask before trying a coffee flavor since it is liquid im assuming it may effect milk amount used, right?

    • @GeoffreyAlan
      @GeoffreyAlan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you're going for a coffee-flavored oat, I'd keep the volume of liquid the same, but sub it with the same amount of cold brew (and any cream if you want it). Alternatively, you could add instant coffee or espresso to the milk product that you're using, which would allow you to get a more-intense flavor without having the texture thin out too much.

    Can you make a a version of this that can go in a blender bottle? One that can be drank instead of eaten. More similar to the oats overnight product that contains protein.

    • @GeoffreyAlan
      @GeoffreyAlan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Just had a question since you mentioned that these overnight oats can be stored in the fridge for upto 3 days. Then how does much keep their products at different departmental stores for a month ?

    • @GeoffreyAlan
      @GeoffreyAlan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some of the grocery store versions (e.g.: Quaker overnight oats) are just dry ingredients and you add the liquid, so the shelf life is that of a normal dry good (many months). If they’re a fully prepared with liquid, they may have preservatives (natural or artificial) or be pasteurized to eliminate any contamination that would make them go off more quickly. Realistically the homemade ones are probably fine longer than The 4 days I recommended, but I don’t have a way to test for food safety, so I’m ultra-conservative. In the restaurant industry, you’re normally given 3-5 days on prepared foods like sauces, but lots of factors could affect shelf life. Hope that helps!

    • @maryclaire340
      @maryclaire340 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Ritika, Mush uses a method called HPP (high pressure processing), which, as the name suggests, is a process of pasteurisation by high pressure (versus the more common heat pasteurisation method). This gives their product a shelf life of about 90 days or so.
