    What a great idea - The Star Spanged Banner and Apollo 17. When America was proud of it's space programme, and not afraid to show it - class !!

    I remember this sign off from when I lived in Seattle starting in 1976. It was very effecting to me as I was very alone in that city when I first was there and I would watch TV until sign off back then. I view this post with great gratitude. I'm a professional classical musician and for a "religious" piece (and in my view an effective arrangement of a beautiful piece, the Doxology), the music with the visuals was very effective, moving and comforting.

    Movie in the beginning is “The Way We Were”, featuring Robert Redford.

    Very nice rendition of both the doxology and our national anthem!
    Also, for the benefit and information of you and others who view this and to refresh your memory, the words of our national anthem were written by Francis Scott Key in the aftermath of the British attack on Baltimore's Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 when he saw the American flag still waving over the fort that morning and below are Mr. Key's words if you want to look them over while listening or sing along as you stand with your hand over your heart.
    The anthem begins at the 3:46 mark.
    O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
    what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
    whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
    o'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
    And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
    gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
    O say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave
    o'er the land of the free
    and the home of the brave?
    👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

    I remember an earlier version of this that KING-TV used in the 1960's and '70's with different scenes. I believe the next to last scene showed a United Airlines DC-8 flying overhead; being an airplane enthusiast, that was my favorite version. Hoping to find it somewhere on TH-cam. Anyway, I miss the days when TV (and radio) stations played our National Anthem before signing off and at sign-on. Thanks for posting these memories.

      That version was used by sister station KREM-TV as late as 1987, I think?

    That was the U.S. Navy's version of the SSB, where they viewed ships, submarines and a launching pad. At the near end they displayed a big Navy flag prior to the U.S. flag. If anybody finds that clip, please post it, I've haven't it in over 20 years! Thanks!

    It varied from station to station, and on occasion could be attributed to whether the station ownership had a particular affiliation with a church. If you look under other sign-off messages that I've posted you will find WCBS in New York included a sermon message prior to the anthem.

    • @gidzmobug2323
      @gidzmobug2323 ปีที่แล้ว

      And not always a Christian message, either. As I remember, there were a couple of rabbis.

    What does separation of church and state have to do with a privately-owned broadcasting company? Fortunately, in addition to separation of church and state, we have separation of media and state (except for minimal censorship rights reserved by the FCC). It is so nice that they aired this and then went off-air until the morning news, instead of airing obnoxious infomercials and other paid programming overnight.

    Its been so long to me when this analog system was used and the last thing u heard was a song about God n the Lord.. Does the starspangled banner mean what it used too? I feel we are in such moral decay and headed into the end of and age n the begining of a new age I wish we had more time.. God bless

    • @mannbradmusic
      @mannbradmusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it is sad and unfortunate to see such moral decay happening in our nation and when it comes to such issues as this, Scripture makes it clear that as the return of Jesus and the end of history draws nearer, we will see more and more of it. In fact, if you have a Bible and you take a moment to read such passages as Matthew 24 and 2 Timothy 3, I think you'll see the picture.
      Also, despite the trends that have been happening, I still believe that the Lord can bring a great revival to our nation, resulting in many sinners being brought to true repentance and saved.

    Lots of stations did the Short Faith Bit; it counted as Public Affairs, and sticking it here guaranteed it didn't bug too many people who weren't interested.

  • @vivaeljason
    @vivaeljason 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    But that's the thing...while a TV network is addressing the public, they're private enterprises that can air whatever they choose so long as it isn't in violation of FCC rules. I imagine that the sermonettes and religious messages likely didn't offend very many people (of course, not many people were awake) and people that did watch overwhelmingly preferred said messages.

  • @AJonAir1

    I hate that SSB film-
    But I assure that I love that 1st film.
    2nd film just added an audio from KLRN in 1989 (not) but I remembered watching this in 2021. It scared me and I think that the thumbnail from my opinion looks like that they put the US Flag that I don't know why, but robatsea, I assure that this video scared me to death.
    I assure that I hate the thumbnail because it looks like that the moon with the US flag is almost collapsing from my opinion. This will be on my weird video list. My scariest part of it is that an astronaut waved to me and JUMPSCARED ME!! I was so scared and terrified that I can't watch this until today. Thank you, robatsea2009.

    I miss those old TV sign-offs. My only beef is, this is about the third "sign-off/nat anthem" vid I see with religious overtones. Frankly, I just don't recall all this religious mumbo jumbo when I was growing up (whatever happened to seperation of church and state?). Being a native New Yorker from NYC proper, I recall the announcers on the network channels (CBS, NBC,ABC,etc.) signing off the station, and STRAIGHT TO the national anthem with none of this religious nonsense in between.

    • @loge10
      @loge10 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you, Owen. After all, much of the greatest art and music in history was religious in nature. This is not great art, but it is a nice arrangement of the doxology and it's use with the images of nature and animals is very effecting.

    Very true. I can assure you, though, those "sermonettes" fell on deaf ears most of the time. People that would stay up that late, particularly on a Friday or Saturday night, were either "life's a bitch"-minded folks with nocturnal shifts who "didn't want to hear it" , or plain joe-schmoe couch potatoes (used to be one myself), and believe me, I don't know of too many of THOSE that are of a religious mind (esp. with a six pack and a carton w/ a pizza carton by your living room table) lol...

    Yes I can see. Nevertheless, a station serving THE People (both religous and non-religious alike)in a democracy such as ours under a republican form of government, such religious commentary should be reserved for the church services on a Sunday or whenever alone, and not on the air. They're addressing the PUBLIC (Americans of all backgrounds, beliefs and creeds--yes, that includes atheists a s well) not a church congregation! I'm surprised the FCC never stepped in and corrected the situation...

    • @gidzmobug2323

      "Separation of church and state" is not in our founding documents. It is found in Thomas Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptists.
      Besides, we can all choose for ourselves whether or not we want to listen to the sermonettes.
