eBay's UK Authenticity Guarantee for luxury watches. What is it? How does it work? Is it any good?

  • In October 2021 eBay officially launched its Authenticity Guarantee service in the UK.
    It sees watches being sold with a price tag of £2,000 or more being inspected for authenticity by a middle man on their way between the seller and buyer.
    If the watch you are selling is £2000 or more it MUST go through this process. It is not an option.
    This takes place after the purchase and before a watch is shipped to the customer.
    All of this cost is covered by eBay.
    But what does this mean for the watch industry..?
    How does it affect the luxury watch market…?
    What does it mean for us as a watch enthusiasts and collectors who buy and sell watches..?
    And what does it mean for me as a watch business - a professional buyer and seller..?
    In this video Marcelo Bustamante from Prestige Watches talks about it.

    My fav camera 🥰. A love of my life. My third child (I only have two human children).
    There can only be one choice. This is a middleweight camera. I loved the smaller brother (M50) and I have no interest in rolling with the big boys and their cameras. So for me - this is the one!

    If the Canon EOS r is a bit out of reach, then my camera before this was the Canon M50.
    An awesome, affordable camera that punches well above its weight.
    I LOVE this camera 🥰 amzn.to/3h0Br43

    Excellent, informative and helpful. Thank you! In the past few months I've purchased three Rolex (a 2022 DateJust 36 126233 Wimbledon Steel Yellow Gold Jubilee, an Oyster Perpetual Blue - 114300 2017, and a Day-Date 36 Rose Gold 2016 brown Alligator strap) and one Cartier (Roadster 37mm 18ct Yellow Gold Leather Strap 2524) with the confidence that they are guaranteed. I'm new to collecting and so this new (ish) initiative by eBay in the UK and your video are perfect. Thank you again for the video 👍👋

    Thank you for doing the video. I’ve just bought an Omega Seamaster 2022 and it’s with authenticity service now. I’m a first time buying and at £3600 I don’t want to be scammed. I will also pop into Omega AD to have them look at it also.
    Any advice welcome

    Buyer beware. If you attempt to return a watch the authenticator can claim it was damaged by you and you will be stuck with it and the purchase price. This is my current nightmare. It's your word verse theirs and Ebay always sides with their "experts".

      It happened to me recently. I bought a pair of Nike shoes on eBay. They went through the authentication process. When I received the shoes, I quickly realized that the shoes were not the correct size. I ordered size 12 shoes. The eBay listing had size 12 in the listing title. But the shoes are size 13. But now eBay is saying I can't return the shoes because they passed the authentication process.

    I purchased 2 watches, both went through the verification system and both were stolen in the Courier system. I will avoid buying anything that requires verification again as it is just too much hassle and the thieves know how to play the system.

    Interesting. Where did you find confirmation they open the case back? I’ve not seen it in any official eBay or stoll sites.

    • @PrestigeWatches
      @PrestigeWatches  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi. Thanks for asking. It is discretionary as to whether they remove the caseback or not. If they need it unnecessary (for whatever reason) then they won’t. However if they deem it necessary (perhaps they have a suspected Frankenwatch or super-clone on their hands) then they may need it necessary.

    • @nerychristian
      @nerychristian 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I imagine they probably don't need to open up a new watch, unless it's a watch brand like Rolex that is often replicated. If it's a brand like Seiko or mid-tier brand, I would hope they don't open them up. I would hate for someone else to be handling my new watches. Cases get scratched too easily.

    This is all very well but i have sold an Omega Memomatic for £1600 and there was no mention within the Ad that an Authenticity process would be performed, which by what you are saying is for watches over £2000 anyway. My concern is that as they are a very complex mechanical movement the person delving into it will break it., and then say that is how they received it. What shall i do???

    • @PrestigeWatches
      @PrestigeWatches  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      👋🏼 Thanks for the message. A little while after launching they reduced the watch value from £2000 to £1500; which opened the door to being able to authenticate even more watches.
      The Authenticity centre is run by watch making experts with decades of experience. It’s natural to have a concern about what happens to your watch however I would say that it isn’t something you should worry about. They will have your back and they only go as deep into the watch as the feel necessary to confirm authenticity. In some instances, this may just be removing the caseback…

  • @panyc10
    @panyc10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do they then actually check the movement? Say in a vintage Rolex? Their turnaround is rather quick to think that the check is comprehensive

    • @PrestigeWatches
      @PrestigeWatches  ปีที่แล้ว

      👋🏼 Yes, they would remove the caseback and check the movement of the watch. They would be able to tell if the movement is original or a mix of original and aftermarket parts. Or of course, a fake.
