Marcelo are you sure ebays authenticators open the back case on expensive modern watches. Wouldn't this void the warranty.
    Thanks

Hi there. It’s a good question. I do know that the inspectors at the eBay Authenticity Guarantee centres remove the watch caseback and inspect the movement at their discretion. And it’s encouraging to know that there haven't been any reports of invalidated warranties since the service began over two years ago… and is many thousands of watches inspected 👍🏼

Buyer beware. I returned a watch that went through the ebay authentication process. I never personally handled the watch. The authenticator is now stating the watch watch scratches on it. I am now stuck with a damaged watch I never touched and out of $2600. Thanks ebay

Why are we not discussing the most important aspect of Ebay, watch buying and having the watch case opened? Ebay tells me they open the back case for inspection, unless its a clear back. So a Rolex will be opened, allegedly, because some say, they take watches in and the same day they ship them out, but lets assume that they do, which is what concerns me. Are they properly checking the seal and if need be, are they replacing it with a factory standard seal? Are they properly pressurizing the watch to factory standards. Ebay says yes. Ok, so they have high quality gaskets for all makes and models and are properly closing them and again, pressurizing the watch? Who is responsible if I buy a high end Divers watch and the watch gets water in it, even though the crowns are properly closed, I asked. They had no response, other than, their company in Ohio is very reputable and please don't worry. Why no mention of this?

Thank you for your detailed message William. I understand your concern.
I have quite a balanced view on this as I am both a professional buyer/seller on eBay and also a buyer of watches as a consumer (I am a passionate watch enthusiast).
I have sold/purchased both new and vintage watches so
for me, it is about risk management and trading off Pro's and Con's against one another.
I have been very happy with the authentication process and sleep peacefully at night knowing the watches are inspected. And I know many other professional watch sellers and buyers also share my view (certainly those that have nothing to hide).
For newer model watches from particular brands that are very heavily cloned and illegally sold as fakes, the trade-off is ‘risk of receiving a fake’ Vs 'risk of the caseback not being replaced correctly’.
This is a trade-off I am willing to take, especially as clever fake producers of so-called ‘super clones’ have been known to put fake movements in real cases. In order to eliminate this risk, there is no other way to check the movement without taking the caseback off.
The team of professionals that processes the authentication are trained specialists and have the skills and equipment to do the job with expertise and experience.
This is not their first rodeo and so far (at the time of writing this) eBay has no issues to report as far as caseback removal / inspection is concerned. And they have inspected many thousands of watches in their time.
So I personally have no issues whatsoever about the caseback removal.
If ever there was to be an issue, I’m sure eBay would make it right, as they have a reputation to protect and this is a proud feature of the business they are heavily promoting.
