As a movie theater employee, I love seeing one of our regular customers come in to see a movie by himself every few days. He really enjoys himself and I definitely recommend seeing a movie alone. I love going alone. I missed out on so many experiences when I was a teenager by only going if I could manage to find someone to watch a "weird" film that I liked. It's really the perfect way to destress.
Nowadays, I just go. Instead of trying to convince someone to see The Green Knight or whatever, I go alone and enjoy it with everyone else in the theater. Though, there have been times I've been alone in the theater (like when I saw The Farewell) but even then I don't mind. Some of my best experiences were alone, I still remember seeing Phantom Thread and totally vibing with the audience when the film ended.

I ended up enjoying that solo movie experience more than a lot of the other times I went with other people.

If you haven't already you should try a VR headset (a pc one...playstation isn't good yet). Using Big Screen Beta you can choose your own seat in your own movie theater and watch 2D or 3D movies with the 3D looking better than at the theater...except the resolution needs a bit of improving but still worth it. You can host your own movies at your own time and let friends join or random strangers or be alone. You can also mute people or kick people out (wish I could do that in real life). With a good pair of headphones (v-moda crossfades are one of the best for movies as long as you have the extra large earcups) you'll never want to go to the theater again unless specifically to socialize lol.

The first one I saw alone was “Cruella” in May of 2021.
It was also the first one I saw in the theater again after the COVID lockdowns (NJ theaters didn’t widely reopen until April of ‘21).
But anyway yes, it did feel odd finally going by myself.
But I’ve went alone quite a few times after to the point the staff basically recognizes me as a regular .

I went alone for the first time to see Killers of the Flower Moon. I really enjoyed the film! I even enjoyed the rest of the audience.
An older man and his wife arrived to watch. He walked very slow, bent over, supported by her. I thought how many Scorsese films he had seen over the years in the cinema and was just happy that he made it one more time. I’m a part of the new generation and seeing him kind of empowered me.

I used to not go to the movies alone, I always had to drag a friend with me for some reason. After I realised I'm missing out on seeing some interesting movies in the cinema because nobody I know wanted to go, I decided to go alone once. And it felt... refreshing. I didn't make it a habit yet, but after I moved to another city, a city where I didn't know anyone and therefore couldn't ask anyone to go to the movies with me, I started to frequently go alone.
Now I actually prefer it. No need to try and schedule it with anyone, don't have to ask around and wait hours or days for a response, don't have to guess if they want to hang out afterwards or not - I just check what they're showing that day, get my ticket and go.

As a person who is a fiercly independent loner, I never understood whats some folks gripe with doing things alone. I go to the cinema alone, I go to restaurants alone, I go to concerts alone (even multi day music festivals), I go shopping alone, I travel alone...If someone wants to join me, sure, but I am not going to be waiting around and waste my life and opportunities because I cared what anyone thinks about me (btw. some people are too self-important, no one cares what you do, I promise) and becase no one was around to join me.
The only problem is, that my local cinema, that is the only one in the city screening indie movies, operates on a system, that there need to be at least two people, otherwise they are not going to play the movie. But I had to leave disappointed only about two times haha.

I felt like the movie was watching me as much as I was watching it. It was all very surreal and beautiful all the same. I feel like I fully internalized Nomadland after one viewing so I never want to see it again despite loving it. It’s too deeply connected to the moment for me to appreciate seeing it again.

I think I’ve only been to a movie theater alone once or twice, but the experience was amazing. My favorite part was that it was a movie that I saw before my family, so I truly got to feel like the movie was “mine” in a sense.

This is my favourite video from you so far. This just helped me wind down and I really related to a lot of the stuff you said - especially about blurring the lines between "free time" and "time to do something else". So thank you, Karsten. Great video.
Also, I'd like to add that YES, going to the movie theatre alone is amazing. My mother used to do it and encouraged me to try it. I did it quite a few times and I love it. People always think it's weird but the day I went to see Frozen II at night, to escape the children that would be there and to watch it in English (I live in Brazil), I found a lot of people had the same idea as me and went on their own. It was so lovely, and I can't wait to do it again soon.

First of all I love the shots in this video. You really captured the Maine coast and I ope you enjoyed your time up here.
Secondly: You're spot on here. I see movies alone more often than not and it really feels like the purest viewing experience. I saw "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" alone and stony with less than 10 people in the theater and it was one of the best theater experiences I've ever had.
Thirdly?: Finding Nemo was my first theater experience as well. It was the opening scene with the barracuda or whatever it was that scared me as a kid.

2019 was my best year for me in cinematic experience when I watched Knives Out, Parasite and Sputnik in small cozy cinema all alone. To this, I can't decide whether I enjoyed those films so much because they were so good or because I watched em all alone.

I once had plans to see Booksmart with friends but things happened and they weren't able to make it. I still went anyway. I took the metro into D.C. and went into the theater alone with my popcorn and I still had a blast. There was something that felt so special about seeing a movie alone and still having a good time. The music I listened to on the metro was also memorable and overall it made for a very meaningful and reflective experience.

the best part is when you leave a theater and you are not immediately pulled into real life by talking and discussing the movie w someone. You kinda just reflect on what you saw and it feels so much more fulfilling

I managed to catch Nightcrawler all by myself, completely empty theater (I caught the first showing on a Tuesday, 3 weeks after release so the crowds had died down), and I loved it. For context, I regularly go the movies by myself and love it. But having the entire theater to myself was just the best.

Having done both, going by myself is actually far more enjoyable unless you’re going out just to go out and not to actually watch the film first and foremost.
I went to see Whiplash and it was only me and this old couple and it’s one of the best theatre experiences I’ve ever had. I was tempted to clap at the end (if you’ve seen the film you’ll know), not something that’s common in the UK. The only thing that stopped me was that old couple so I didn’t come off a weird.
The first time I did was a bit awkward cos it was Despicable Me 2 (I went off of Kermodes recommendation) and a bunch of teens behind me were just whispering “has he come alone lol” but I shrugged that off.
Also, that observation about worrying what the other person is thinking too much that you can’t concentrate has happened to me multiple times. I took my little sister to see Little Women and I was just irrationally paranoid that she wasn’t enjoying it...it turned out she was crying when the credits came up, she enjoyed it and I didn’t notice it.

I have 1 friend I go to the movies with once or twice a week (we have the Regal unlimited subscription for like $20 a month). But with that said, I still go by myself probably once a week because as a film lover, I try to see most of what is both wide and limited released. Seeing a movie alone, and especially in an empty theater is a fantastic experience where it's just you and the film

I saw Nomadland alone in theatre in April. First open theatre near me, nobody else knew about the movie so I went alone. Amazing experience. That same theatre showed a run of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy this July and I saw the entire trilogy, this time also alone. I wouldn’t have objected if someone asked if they could come to but I didn’t really feel the need to share this excitement with anyone else. I did something that I wanted to do and with or without someone else.

I wish these things weren't so stigmatized that I can't do them without feeling a little bad about myself

Honestly, thank you for making this video. I went to the theatre alone for the first time in 2019 and then got a theatre subscription in January 2020 which unfortunately got cut short because of the pandemic. Now, that theatres are open again in my city, it feels like a relief being able to go there alone again. I can relate so well to the anxiety of going with someone and fearing they might not like it. It takes away my focus too in the end when I just want to enjoy watching a film. So yeah, to everyone who's afraid of it being embarrassing or weird: just go. No one is judging you for sitting there and then leaving in the end. You'll notice that you might not even be the only one alone there. I've noticed lots of people by themselves when going to the movies! Enjoy it.

I've honestly learned to value both. Before it used to be I would see big films with friends and smaller films by myself. I'm thankfully surrounded by people who are usually up for most things so if we do tend to see something smaller and artistic together I'm all for it. But nowadays it's more like if I feel like going to see a movie I'll do it if a friend can or wants to join with me, cool, if not, then it makes no difference for me. But of course there are those times when you get that feeling that you're enjoying a film and the person(s) aren't. Or when you see a certain film by yourself and wish you could have shared that experience with at least another person
