    I am able to use one of these in the back of my Ford Freestar mini van with just opening the vent windows in the back and cracking the front window by about a 1/4 of an inch, it never once set off the CD detector. i have run it at half way in -10f and on low in 30f degrees and in that confined space high turns the van into an oven, never had to go above halfway, i got 4-5 hours on half way and 6-7 hours on low, depending on the butane brand. i like this thing so much i bought 4 of them. its a great little camping gadget... i highly recommend them...

    I just bought this to keep me alive this winter as I am forced to live in my Astro van here in Connecticut due to being evicted. I bought the adapter hose for Coleman 1 lb propane. I have a CO detector and Maxxair fan I can open a little. Thanks for the instructions. BTW I chose blue also to match my van interior.

    Neato.
    Stove and a heater in one is a great idea; I think I am going to have to check this one out.

    ALL RIGHT THIS WENT ON THE "DUDE I NEED THAT" LIST! This design is PERFECT for putting one of those large thermoelectric wood stove fans on top so you can blow hot air in the direction you want! Butane is safer to burn indoors also in my opinion, and this can handle a more substantial pot on top, unlike the "spray can" butane stoves like you get in the Asian Grocery stores, this isn't inherently dangerous with a bigger pot or pan on top. Was it tall enough for the big isobutane canister, or would the weight of everything end up on the canister because it is too tall? Could make some wood shims to fix that I guess. That Stanley pot was PERFECT for this, but I bet the four person Stanley pot and pan would also be great for this! I am buying TWO of these!

    OK, we got our stove yesterday and had to immediately try it out. WE are impressed with this stove and how fast our tea heated up to boiling, I think it was less than 2 min, and it was set at the middle of the adjustment on the top of the stove.

    Barbara Davison you are highly intelligent the bottles you have can be disconnected and saved. The one's he's talking about are punctured upon initial use. But he immediately tried to say you can get adapter for your bottles. Smart girl. I'm sorry to say Walmart does have little stoves that sit on top of your bottles. Also heaters. There are so many things that can be used with the bottles you have at least 100's of them.

    • @Iridium242

      The Iso butane cannisters are not punctured upon initial use, they reseal when you take them off so they can be reused. Jeebel makes the adapter right here for use with propane 1 lb propane bottles. amzn.to/2Wvt5ui

    Great advice about carbon monoxide and general safety.
    Personally I have done, and WILL do, all kinds of crazy shit with fires, heaters, cookers and stoves.... in places I should not do them.
    The reason I am still here is because I have the same ethos you do. Always ventilate, always assume the worst biproducts are being produced by the flame, and always have a fire extinguisher near to hand. I just finished making a bar of Greenland Wax in my kitchen .... but I did it with a broiler, with a bowl of cold water nearby, with a fire extinguisher behind me, the air extractor on, and a carbon monoxide detector in the room. Its all about risk, and mitigated them. Thank you for yet another excellent take.

  • @Sylvan_dB
    @Sylvan_dB 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I expect "no upside down" because the fuel canisters are mostly full of liquid and instead of a little hiss during attachment you would get a flood of rapidly evaporating liquid, which will be cold enough to burn. Same as what happens if you discharge "canned air" upside down.

  • @Saltpork305
    @Saltpork305 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    They instruct you to not turn it upside down because if you do that with a butane canister you're dumping pressurized liquid, not gas into the fuel system. Liquid butane is vastly more dangerous than butane that has evaporated or mixed with air. That's why they tell you not to do that. If you do you need to wait 5-10 minutes before trying to start the unit to give it time to evaporate.

    • @davidhawkins847
      @davidhawkins847 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking the same.
      In addition the liquid butane can suck up all the heat and freeze which can burn you if you happen to come in contact with the liquid butane.

    George, do the Gas One iso-butane canisters cost less than the Coleman canisters at Wally world? Because of their compactness I favor them for travel but tend to not like them for at home because of price. But if the Gas One iso cans are comparable in price to butane and propane I'd rather not have to use an adapter. Did the gas one's come from Amazon?

    • @davidhawkins847
      @davidhawkins847 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You may want to do some cost calculations? A lot of the cost for Canisters is the steel bottle. It may cost less to get the smaller canister but your cost per gram may be higher. If you aren't doing anything where the weight is an issue, it may be more cost effective to get the 220g over the 110g bottles. You can go higher, but personally I keep the 220g since I find them to be the best compromise between size/cost and portability. Plus I find them to be more stable when using a stove mounted on the canister.

    Theoretically, yes. A propane heater can produce some small levels of Carbon Monoxide. However a properly maintained heater produces only Carbon Dioxide, a completely different animal. Wanna know how to tell without the gadgets? Look at the flame. If you see any yellow at all your producing Carbon Monoxide in excess of what the unit was designed for. Reduce the flame till all the yellow is gone and your back in the safe area. Carbon Monoxide is the product of incomplete ignition, and so is the yellow flame. The heater under discussion is designed to be an indoor heater. Adjusted and operating properly the biggest problem with using it in a tiny, enclosed space is burning up the oxygen. You need oxygen. Try not to go there.
    They dont want you to put the canister in when the stove is upside down because then the liquid gas will flow into the housing and it will not operate correctly. In fact you can find a fire ball. Dont go there. Right side up and the liquid wont enter the housing, only gas and gas is what it is designed to regulate.

      Though a car doesn't really have enough space around it to use it safely. Though in an emergency where it's freeze or burn you might have to roll the dice. I'd recommend fire proof insulation around it, like a large ceramic vase.
