Richard is a man of the people, he tests engines that are available to just about anybody, 5.7 LS1’s are great but you don’t find them in the junkyard too much. I appreciate the testing that you do my friend, especially the “other guys” engines 🤘
That FAST intake was a big deal on the 5.7, and many of us want to put our noses down on these engines, they make a ton of power with the right parts!
What would you recommend for mods on a 5.7? I'm looking at putting a turbo on mine. It's in a Holden Adventra which is essentially an AWD GTO wagon weighing around 2000kg (4400lbs). The stock 5.7 pulls alright once revs are up, but I want more🤣
@@joshthomas2536 With the turbo, the turbo makes the power. Put a single gt45 on it, and your good for 700-800HP and similar torque. You could run gt45 with stock exhaust, merge the exhaust with a "Y" send that single 3" or 3.5" pipe back up into the engine bay to feed the turbo. Relocate the battery to the trunk. Turbo can go in that location. Heat shielding where required.
@Ballen1182😂😂 where can I find that dyno ?
@dennisrobinson8008 turbos make the peak power number but the engine will make the curve. Its difference between a 3000-6500 rpm power band and a 4600-6000 rpm power band, only 1 of them is actually fun to drive 😂
As a C5 owner, I've been waiting on this one
Its not just an Aussie thing. Dont forget we still have countless Fbodies, Vettes and GTOs rolling around with LS1s
It’s all started here with the mighty LS1!!
Yay for LS1 content!🎉
I’m in the middle of a (unfortunately way too) long term swap using a low mileage LS1 I have been sitting on for a while. I’m fabbing up long tube tri-y headers to fit (MGB, so nothing available) and will do a cam , and likely heads at some point. I like seeing numbers on the original 5.7
Project got put on hold.. but I still love the LS1 content :) Thanks, Richard!
I pulled the 5.3 from my Silverado and tossed in an LS1 I had laying around that was pulled from my old Trans Am. Basically, just swapped short blocks, added a stage 1 truck cam and long tubes. Since the 08 comes with the better intake and heads, after rebuilding, I reused those knowing they would work great. I tuned it for 87 and e85 as well. Truck ended up picking up 80hp and 63 tq to the wheels, makes the same peak power as a stock 6.2, idles stock and gets the same mileage as my 5.3 did. I had played around with the idea of adding the Truck Norris and the I6 trailblazer converter which would have certainly added performance and power, but this was in the summer of 22 when gas prices were going up. I also liked the idea of something that idled stock and (in theory less oil dilution from overlap) would go stock oil change intervals. Overall, I'm super happy with it and love knowing it has the OG LS granddaddy, its nostalgic.
How did that work if the ls1 is 24x reluctor and the 07 5.3 is 58x
@@2sscole swapped the reluctor
With 25 extra cubes, a cam, and tuning, 80 more h.p. is completely believable
@@davelowets it was tuned before too.
I recently picked up a real nice base C5 Coupe, this is the content I have been waiting for.
Thanks from downunder. I would be interested to see power change from stock cats to hi flow cats to no cats if you have the chance one day. Thanks for all your hard work undoing all the secrets of the past and showing us what works and what is just marketing hyoe.
The high flow cats go bad quickly and can fck your engine
Best to go catless if possible!
Thanks for doing this!
I have a low mileage LS1 car and debating what modifications to do to my car.
When people ask me what they should do to their LS engines I direct them right to your videos..
Right on!
Strap a turbo on it Pump some E85 through it and send it haha
Pull it for an LS3 and add a cam. Cammed LS3 > all but max effort head cam ported 102 Fast Ls1.
But seriously, for cheap I'd make sure you have an LS6 intake, add 243 or 799 factory heads and maybe have them ported, headers tsp or speed engineering 1 3/4 or 1 7/8, small cam (220-230 dura 600 lift 112-114), and clutch. That's quite a bit of money still if you don't do the work yourself but you should be 420-430ish wheel 390-400 tq for a 6 speed.
3.73s if auto 4.10s if M6.
@@jjjjjj9284 naa it's low miles like new...
@@Carado5150 it has the LS 6 intake.
I'm back and forth about modifications because it low mileage like new..

Made 450/405 to the tire.

Very healthy
I have a 2002 ls1 from a camaro I’m about to start on now!
@@Slowpoke99s10 you started yet? I just got my 2000 camero z28 with a ls1 in it got it yesterday lol😂
Aussie here, so yep, I love the LS1 5.7 content. Thanks, Richard ! Has there ever been a test of moving from an LS6 manifold to a Fast 92 or 102, but on a CNC ported 241/243 heads 5.7 using a baby cam? Obviously with a big cam, there's good results, but with a baby cam, im told not worth it. Especially with the extra engine noise and hacks needed for a Fast manifold. Plus over $3k of the folding stuff!
only you can decide what amount of money is worth a given power gain. A fast makes more power on every combo, the wilder the combo, the greater the gains
@@richardholdener1727 Thanks, Richard. I'm probably most concerned about the gain being nothing, which I've seen people report with a similar combination to mine. Basically because the cam is small, so doesn't need any more flow than what the LS6 delivers. I've seen many Aussie LS1 owners say this with cams up to the 220/220 range, but on the other hand, all the LS2 guys swear by the Fast upgrade no matter the cam size. Most likely due to the issues with that factory manifold I guess.
This is a great youtube channel. I have an idea, but others probably already said it, or you already did it. How about a 5.7 comparison, late model and stock. Then larger versions. 5.7 from GM in LS architecture, then 5.7 sold through FCA as the "Hemi".....look at that monster midrange torque. Wow, what a great motor.
This is good info, but I really wish you had some more 5.7 with factory GM heads.
lots of tests up with those too
Still rocking the BBk intake 🤞🏻
We've been needing this video. Thank you
Wish I still had mine… said too many times… 99 Z28 Hugger Orange. Made one trip down the strip. 13.6@102 best of 3 passes.
My opinion, it don't matter if it adds power either high or low, if a change adds it, it's better, especially if it doesn't take away from the other end.
Looking forward to more ls1/ls6 content
With collector extensions I wonder if having the dual extension pipes vs an H-pipe or X-pipe makes any difference with exhaust scavenging, or even if there is a loss or no difference with a y-pipe into a single exhaust.
Very good question.. and I would thank it would probably change a little bit
Yes, it WOULD
Awesome video as always Mate. Now ya need to do a 5.4 video comparing the two as they battled here in Australia for many years
He's done a 5.3 vs 5.4 which is a good comparison as well
@@madmodyep and that was another good video. I personally would love to see an overlay of the 5.7 vs a boss intake equipped 5.4 4v as a comparison I know cams specs are different on our Aussie engines but hey it would be close enough 😅
@@darkshine5 5.4s absolutely swing up to some of those 5.7s down under too. You guys having those boss intakes really makes the 5.4 potent.
@@madmod yeah it kinda a shame that the Barra was as good as it was. The 5.4 gets very little love down under. I'd guess that there would only be maybe twenty turbo boss motors getting about down here most ppl that did modify the 5.4 went either vortech or Yella terra(Harrop 1.9) and very few companies in Aus actually offer aftermarket parts for them compared to a LS/Barra gear.
@@darkshine5 Now that we can put Coyote manifolds onto 5.4 4 cam engines, I hope it will spark some more life into those mod motors. They can be had so cheaply.
Currently getting ready to build my ls1 for my 64 falcon 🤟🏻🤟🏻
Very nice output from modest HCI, especially such a small cam. That final torque curve would be really nice on the street! If you don’t have a 6.0, you could bore your 5.3-iron or aluminum-and duplicate, I would think. Or leave it stock and add boost…
Yes! I actually listened to Richard about camshafts and am running a Lil John's stage 1 turbo cam instead of some giant cam. I want a snappy bottom end with my 5.3 and I can just add boost to hit the horsepower numbers.
Yes you can iron ls1 makes big boy power stock ls1 pistons put you at 10-1 compression stage 2 truck cam from Texasspeed 350hp 350tq wheel with ls6 intake 1 7/8 headers
You can't bore a 5.3 that big...
You would be re-sleeving it and spending a LOT of money for that bore size
been waiting for this, the OG LS1 engine is what we get in New Zealand too
Yes 5.7🎉
Man that is a lot of power with such a small cam. wow!
Great information! Thanks for the video.
Awesome as always! Me and my friends always talk cars , and in disagreements, someone always brings up one of your videos as proof. Did you ever dyno test header wraps , or ceramic coatings?
those are more for heat management in the engine compartment
@@richardholdener1727 ahh another myth debunked! Thank you! This shall be my proof for our next argument 😂

346ci 10-1 compression good heads = easy power. Boosted these are monsters.
a dream come true for a last gen f body owner
My og 5.7 just made 544whp 446wtq. I think there's another 20-30 left in it.
Interesting how you say that the biggest factor of long tubes is the benefit they provide through scavenging. Well I noticed the stock header you used appeared to be a Camaro style (I presume) that is a "4-1" style collector. I noticed that later on GM started using a "tri-Y 4-2-1" design on the factory exhaust manifolds for the Corvette and the z06. I'm wondering if that is the exact reason the move to the design? I'd that's the save I wonder if there are large gains between the two factory headers as well as the long tubes. Great video thanks for showing the OG a little love!
it doesn't matter what you do to stock manifold designs if they are very short-the big gains come from primary length and collector design
Weird project but I have a 1995 Chevy 1500 extended cab 4x4 with the gutless TBI. Just looking for fun ideas lol
I wouldn't waste $ on a fast intake if you already have the ls6 on there.
(Only worth it on a max effort H/C build)
Free mods are good for at least 10whp
Look them up
Throttle body port
Bump stop
Etc etc
I just put down 355 whp and 358 ftlb with a boltons/free mods and a tune in my 02 Z28 M6

I need some ls7 testing. Planning on putting one in a squarebody
what do you do with the pcv system in these types of applications?
just got a C5 Vette trying to figure the best combo of parts for the ls1
Same just picked up a Fbody and can’t wait to get some mods
Show us how to get more vacuum with a stage 3 BTR cam, or any other cam that need the vacuum to run. I have a 1973 Camaro that I put a BTR stage 3 cam into LS swap, and need more vacuum for the power brakes.
DIFFERENT CAM

Run a vacuum reserve can....
Im going to put a barra into my old xr6 first, but if it decide it's not a good enough change, I'll be getting an LS1 t56, it'll be going in stock then getting mods
Skip the Barra
Richard how does that small cam keep making power at 6500 rpm that's a strong engine for what is
think 500 hp is very respectable.
I ...definitely didn't have any 500hp cars in the 70s or 80s.
Shit, Even 400
We did get 6l and ls3s in good amounts and we got ls7, ls2, lsa in lower amounts in higher spec holdens that your not going to find being wrecked that often on marketplace 😂
I must be overly paranoid but I just installed a turbo. I am going to give up the bit of power over the FAST and run the BBK so I can abuse the boost. Then I can sell my plastic manifolds before I blow holes in them and use that money for more goodies.
The plastic manifolds will be fine. I've seen 1000hp on plastic truck manifolds.
we've run 28 psi on FAST manifolds-you don't have to worry about hurting it with boost
@@richardholdener1727gd to know mate because my turbo LS1 is almost ready and it has the fast102mm on it ,cheers Richard love all of your work big thumbs up buddy 👍
I have been agonizing over this and I know you are correct. 102mm FAST seems like it is built much beefier and works for boost as you have tested many many times. But I should have specified mine is a FAST 92. Supposedly the bottom is much thinner and I can see it doesn't have reinforcement ribs like the 102. I have seen pics of broken 92s. So if I go FAST I would sell the 92 and get the 102. Am I being clear as mud? :)
Id be interested to see what ITB's would do on a LS1
I have those vids up
@@richardholdener1727 awesome. How far back in your play list do I need to look. Or a link please,
I want to see if there’s any gains from a expansion in the exhaust like on a two stroke. 3”-4”-3”. Would there be any gains from having a high-low-high pressure wave? I see more and more intakes that do it which makes more sense. But I have a race car and resonator that are 4” the rest is 3.5” (drag and drive gotta be “street legal”). I noticed a gain but that could be from the cat being .5” bigger than the previous (same brand race cat).
How about how to bullet proof Ls1/Ls6 blocks. Been seeing them have a lot of issues like cylinder 7, rod bearings, main bearings. What are some recommendations.
there is not a standing issue with rod or main bearings-nothing wrong with the blocks, those specific alum blocks are not the best choice for high-hp boosted applications
Hey Richard.. Now take the 5.7 and compare it to the 6.0. The 5.7 came with 345hp-400hp for (LS6), but the 6.0 came with 300hp-400hp for (LS2). Can you please make a video on this?
THE lS2 MAKES MORE THAN THE ls1 (THE LS6 MAKES SIMILAR PEAK POWER TO lS2, BUT MUCH LESS TORQUE.
LS2 had LS6 heads and more bore. Thus ore power than the LS1. LS1 heads peaked at 220-230 CFM , LS6 heads peaked at 240-260CFM.
ls6 had a more powerful cam and more compression
@@dennisrobinson8008 Difficult to bore the LS1 past about .005 overbore. Especially the early blocks. Easy to stroke but difficult to bore out. Less expensive to move to a 6L or 6.2L block.
Do you need to retune the car after switching cat backs? Ls1 cammed with along tubes. Only thing changes is the cat back exhaust. Borla baffle murflers switched to straight though pipe ? Need a recal?!
no need to recall
@@richardholdener1727 thank you so much!!!! I’ve been asking this question for 3 years to no avail. Mechanics, tuners and TH-cam. No one seems to understand what I was talking about. I imagine my LS1 Camaro would dyno the same. No hp lost or gained.
Hey Richard what is the optimum LSA for an LS1 Street driven piece
there is no optimum lsa-you need to look at more than lsa
Watching this because i have a 2002 ws6 trans am lol.
Richard where do u work and can I please have an application
What would be the current better cam . I just got one of these and a 2200 lb race car .
depends on what you want out of the cam-but look at the Truck Norris or Hot Rod from BTR
I have an ‘02 z28 I want to wake up. What changes need to be made to the fuel system to support these upgrades? Fuel injectors, fuel pump? Would you need to move to a high volume oil pump?
only injectors and fuel pump and tune-the oil pump is not part of the fuel system and the stock one works well
The fuel pump is fine till about 520whp.
Richard this may be the best question anyone ever asked you, however it doesn't directly pertain to this video. Since EGR increases compression by taking up space in the combustion chamber as an inert gas, what would it be like to supply Argon to the intake in any engine and compare numbers with or without the argon ?
Without even doing the test, what are your thoughts on that?
by adding an inert gas (especially exhaust) you are replacing the good air that make power
@@richardholdener1727 ah yes, the argon would displace the good air.
I’ve always preached that long tubes weren’t worth much power, but the power gain is from the elimination of the cats. This backs up what I’ve always said. 11hp from headers over manifolds. Yea it picked up a little more tq, but still not as much difference as everyone thinks.
If you've said that headers don't add power and removing the cats do-you are incorrect
@@richardholdener1727 that’s not what I said. I said headers (alone) don’t add much power. Which you proved correct. If you are going to repeat what I say, don’t forget words to try and probe me wrong. 11hp at the flywheel gain literally isn’t worth the time or money spent.
LT's make power! Shorties would be better than a cast iron manifold and LT's better than a shorty header. @@Turbogto_guy
@@dennisrobinson8008 but is 11hp worth the cost, hassle, noise and leaks? That’s 11hp at the flywheel. What? 6-7hp at the wheels? I realize as the engine gets bigger and more radical, the power gain goes up. But bolting headers on a stock motor just isn’t really worth it. A cam is worth far more.
@@Turbogto_guy A good set of long tunes make well more than 10hp on a 500hp engine. It is more like 30hp or more.

I want to know if the ls1 will be okay with boost and if so should I change the short block because I heard the aluminum blocks will crack
fine wigh boost
How does boost affect the valve springs? I'm curious to know if boost pressure can cause valve float. How much extra lift should be allotted for boost pressure. In my head if there's constant pressure ontop of the valve pushing it open at some point it should be able to force that valve open.
it will never force the valve open, it just effectively reduces spring pressure
What size was the Fast Intake? A 92mm or 102mm?
this FAST was the original Wilson FAST-80 mm opening
@@richardholdener1727 Oh awesome! Thanks for getting back to me

@@Carado5150 there's a bit more difference than that. My bolt on ls6 made 451whp/423wtq. Stock heads, stock cam. It ran 10.7@130ish in a 4gen. Best trap was 131.3. I have an LS1 with an old MTI C1 "Hammer" cam (222° / .566" @ 112° single pattern), similar to the Comp xr275.
I currently have the heads off (original 241's) and have been trying to decide between 243/799 and 706/862 with the valves unshrouded. Would love to see a comparison of these 2 factory heads on this engine.
I'm looking for broad power from off idle through about 6,000-6,500 more so than peak numbers.
Any recommendation between the two?
see the video comparing those heads
706 head will bump the CR so more power and the 243 will lower exhaust and you'll lose power
If you don't want to do it yourself, have the 241s ported with a performance valve job and decked .020-.030. That would make the most noticeable difference.
Did you ever get this running? I've got a set of 862 heads with a valve job (I used the bigger intake valves from the 241 heads). I've got a small 214 cam though, thinking of going bigger... I want a stealthy idle though
