Looking to get the best possible data rates from your T-Mobile 5G Internet Gateway?
You’ll want to purchase and connect external MIMO antennas to the device’s internal U.FL ports.
Using a MIMO antenna pointed at the nearest tower and this can help you get the fastest 4G LTE and 5G data rates possible.
The T-Mobile 5G Internet Gateway has four internal U.FL ports, which allow for two 2x2 MIMO antennas, or up to a 4x4 MIMO antenna to be connected to the device. Accessing these ports does require some disassembly, but I will walk you through that in the guide below.
Here are the three main ways that external antennas help you increase your data rates:
    1.
    They Improve Signal Quality
In 4G LTE and 5G networks, signal quality is measured as SINR (Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio) or sometimes as RSRQ (Reference Signal Received Quality).
Improving signal quality has a huge impact on your data rates.
Higher data rates allow your hotspot to communicate using "higher order modulation schemes." That means they can use the same wireless spectrum to send more data per second.
    However, there's one big caveat:
In order to improve your signal quality, you need to both aim and shield your outdoor antenna properly. We talk more about this in the next section.
    2.
They Allow You To Connect On More Bands
Hotspots like the T-Mobile 5G Internet Gateway support a feature called "carrier aggregation."
Carrier aggregation allows the Gateway to connect on multiple cellular bands simultaneously.
The more bands you're connected on, the greater the bandwidth, and the higher your data rates.
However, many of the higher frequency bands aren't able to penetrate into buildings. Using external antennas allows you to access higher frequency bands, which are often less congested and offer higher speeds than lower frequency bands.
    3.
    They Increase Your Signal Strength
As you might expect, using outdoor directional antennas can help increase the signal strength.
This helps increase data rates, but only up to a point.
If your signal strength (called "RSRP" in 4G and 5G networks) is stronger than about -100 dBm, stronger signal won't speed up your connection any further.

    • @Timzart7
      @Timzart7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

A guy on the TMO discussion board, 007Bond (his handle), said in a recent post, he didn't get it to work right until he mounted the Waveform antenna outside his window. He has low-e glass. Before he got the antenna, his problem was getting the desired n41 5G band from one of three towers all which he was quite close to. With the antenna outside the window and pointed at the n41 tower, his average speed went from 75 to 650 with a similar rise on upload to 100. I understand how some people in apartments or even condos, might not be able to mount an antenna outdoors.
I don't have the antenna because I'm fine with my average speeds of 200/30, which being 5 miles from an n41 tower, is amazing. My peak speed ever was 420/70. Coming from single-digit DSL speed for the last 8 years, even after four months with this, I'm still in shock.

Did you move it to the attic or outside? I just ordered a Waveform MIMO for the newer T-Mobile Arcadyian Gateway, should get it this coming Monday (08/20/22), because I'm in a rural area and I get between 5 and 18mbps without a booster antenna. I've been watching as many reviews/tutorials as possible to see how well these work for others. Of course my experience will be different, everybody's mileage will vary, but I wanna get an idea of what to expect.

Thanks for the video. I just got my gateway to hold me over until Starlink is available. Early this morning I got 111/19 with 2-3 bars. I can’t imagine it getting faster than that. But I am interested to see how much better you get when the antenna is up high. During peak usage times my speed gets down around 10/1… some days it’s half a mb up also… being a content creator the upload is everything to us.
Just curious how if you noticed more bars on your unit when you connected it?

Red bluff ca I'm connected to a 5g capable tower but tmobile doesnt transmit 5g I'm my area yet if they ever will. I'm 4g only Maybe .6mb to 6mb with everything hooked up. When I first bought this home setup I was getting 5- 12 mbps but its been down hill every since and yes I have contacted tmobile several times my tmobile cell phone get the same speeds. Seems like we get throttled during heavier usage times even though were in a rural area. I was really hopeful this would be better but sadly it's not. I was o the loo it's for starlink but we just got emailed were screwed until the end of 2022 I might try adding a dual cable power supply amd see if that helps. Anyways thanks for the video it was really helpful. I was also wondering if there is a difference between the little ports inside as far as signal like if the pair you used is for 5g and maybe the other set you didn't use is for 4g I thought if that's the case that might go me better.

N42 (i think) I get 600Mbps down and maybe 20 up.... when I'm on the slower networks my UPLOAD is 100Mbps
T-mobile kinda jumped the gun on deploying these things but in the right areas they are downright insane speeds rivaling fiber even with midband.
If i don't have n42 my DOWNLOAD falls off turning the day but my uploads are still 50-80mbit ... i use this connection primarily for uploading stuff ... it's been a godsend... if it gets lower upload speeds when they upgrade the other tower .... I can take it for the 600mbit download !!! :D

I purchased both a panel and a higher gain log periodic to compare. For me, they both worked about the same. Really no improvement over internal antennas. I'm 3.5miles from tower as the crow flies. Flat terrain but 1/3 wooded, 1/3 farmland and 1/3 lake. The only benefit to external antenna is that now I can bring my can inside. Before I had to leave on table under covered porch roof to get a signal. I get 85/0.9 on good day and 40/0.1 on bad day (4G LTE only). Can't pick up 5G at all where I'm at. Maybe not worth the $50/month. Might drop it if my Starlink works (been on waiting list for months).

@@matthewmeltonTEAMMELTONFISHING Yup I went with Waveform. Their customer support is top notch. I tried near ground level, first floor, and above 2nd floor. Tried 3 sides of house. Rotated around 360° in ~22.5° increments. Took many hours because also tried various combinations of can rotations at same time. Ended up first floor level (about 12' off gnd level since house sits high). It's not quite highest speed, but easiest to mount/route cables and not much less than best location. Interesting note: If I arrange such that I hit lower bandwidth tower (band 25 vs 41) I get 1/2 the download speed, but get up to 2mbps up. Maybe because the lower frequency has better penetration capability leaving my low power transmitter.

    This guy,
    th-cam.com/video/vbzOMSIcrUg/w-d-xo.html
is only a mile from the Tmobile tower but he tried a bunch of antennas and they didn't help that much. For him, the placement of the cylinder unit, and even rotating it left or right, can make a difference. In one video, he even took it up on his roof.
I'm 8 miles from the tower. I have 4G phone that uses Tmobile towers. I get speeds between 1 and 65 on it, most usually 20 to 30, and I'm hoping the 5G will work on this home internet.
