- Just a brief overview of the new 2018 Leatherman Wave Plus in Black Oxide. Unfortunately my video was too long so check out part two.

Excellent overview. I've owned a Wave since it was first released. I once forgot it in a favorite fishing hole at night and didn't realize it til I got home. I drove back 12 miles humped about a kilometer through the field, clambered down a steep cliff and retrieved my beloved tool and have not lost sight of it again. I've abused it and the pliers are just as strong as they were when I got it. Broke the serrated blade once and sent it to the factory where they replaced it and the rest is history.
I watched the whole thing out of respect for your first video. For those who do not have the same patience as me, the overview starts at 11:55

Expecting my Wave+ to be delivered in a few days - went with steel. Looking forward to testing out the tools ... I'll be keeping this one in my truck for daily carry.
Thanks for the info and your thoughts, as well as your Service. For your first YT, you did a great job! Not filming with a shaky, handheld iPhone with auto-focus going ape-shit, etc. is a big plus.

I had the same skeletool and loved it until i broke the plyers trying to cut a piece of fencing wire. I got the warranty voucher for it and then decided to upgrade to the black wave+. It should be here tomorrow and I am excited!
Just got a wave plus on Friday. Was so excited but when opened it was broken so have to wait till tmrw when they are open again to have another one sent out. Beautiful though

Ok I’m a bit late to the Leatherman fan club but I love my Wave+ and have found myself looking for things to use it for. It’s a great product that does what it says and nothing it doesn’t. Just what it’s intended market wants.

Do you have any suggestions for an alternative to gun cleaners to clean the multitool? I don't own any guns and they are very rare where I live so no way to get my hands on some gun cleaner

EcoOne Thank you. This particular Wave + is only about a year old. The finish is holding up well. I don’t use the Wave every day though (It’s in a rotation of a few different Leatherman’s).

Can you break this in to where you can one hand open it or does the black oxide get in the way
Great tips on cleaning up the black oxide residue. My black oxide/silver wave + just arrived yesterday and I’m planning on cleaning it this weekend. That gun cleaning brush looks very handy in cleaning the wave + because it has a bore style brush (almost looks like a bottle brush)on one end of your gun cleaning brush. Where did u find a gun cleaning brush like that because I can only find dual toothbrush style gun cleaning brushes?
Unfortunately I’ve acquired a few different pieces from different gun cleaning kits so I wouldn’t be able to pinpoint which one it’s from. Sorry about that.
I was hoping for some links in the bio. But what type of gun cleaner did you use. Just any kind I can purchase on Amazon? Great video! Helped me make my purchase! I also grabbed the Topo Signal!

I just bought the Wave yesterday and super disappointed that they don't have the spring pliers like in the sidekick.
Other than that it's a great tool.

I ground the back of the can opener down into a wood gouging tool. It does the job well enough, but I could stand to make it a bit thinner (though it turned out so nice that it is tricky to talk myself into it!)

Amazing video and so helpful! Waiting for my Wave+ and it should come in about a week! Question tho, what kind of gun cleaner did you use? I don't own any guns myself so I'm totally lost when it comes to that kind of stuff but wanna clean my Wave+ the same way you did it!
Any gun cleaning solution should work fine. I think I used Hoppes 9 solution. You should be able to get that at Walmart in the sporting goods section.
@@EverymanGear thank so much for answering! Hehe, I live in Sweden so a Walmart is gonna be hard to find but I'll find something! Is there anything else that works like 556 or WD 40 or is there something particular in gun cleaners that makes this work?
Edit: found the Hoppes 9 but would still be interesting to know about the WD 40 and 556!
@@robin3840 I’m not sure about WD-40. It might work. All you’re trying to do is just really get that stuff scrubbed off of it and that might possibly work.

Hi, thank you! I’m sorry but I do not recall what font I used. The one thing I vaguely remember is that there’s not a ton of choices so it may not be too difficult to find.

Did you experience any black oil coming out? I ordered a black wave plus but I’ve heard rumors of black oil getting on people’s hands for the first few weeks.
ExTremeHYPE Yes. There IS residue. Unfortunately, being my very first video… I was extremely long winded. Lol...There is a part two where I explain that if you simply clean it off with gun cleaner it won’t do that. I cleaned mine with gun cleaner right when I got it and never experienced any residue. The black oxide one looks quite cool and tactical when brand new but isn't it just going to get scratched up and look pretty crap before very long? Stainless ones seem to retail for less with the same tools and your less likely to lose it if you drop it in the dark. I'd want a tritium key chain on a black one to make it easier to find.
yeah I have that issue with all the colored tools
I love mine but the bit extender is extremely tight. I couldn't get any of my bits in there. Gonna try WD40 but it would have been nice it they would have put a magnet in there. Seems like a missed opportunity. Love the tool though.
The R.A.E. sheath will scrape the black oxide off of the Leatherman very quickly.
SH*T SH*T SH*T SH*T!! i JUST bought a Wave and a Charge TTI second gen. now with the 3rd gen available i must spend for the 3rd gen. But lets think about this critically, 2 schools of thought. They now have replaceable wire cutters, Question: Is this Leathermans way of saving warranty repair money? if the wire cutters get fouled or damaged YOU must buy the cutters at your expense for about 10$-15$. 2. Leatherman does save money not having to repair the tools, however the shipping to Leatherman is 10-15$ with or without insurance. The true advantage is that you are NOT without your tool for a month (approximate turn around). So the true winners is BOTH Leatherman (not having to fix the tool under warranty) boosting thier bottom line turning a cost into a profit. And the customer wins because they arent without their tool for a month. Thats a true innovation in business, I applaud Leatherman for giving us what we asked for. I personally will keep cutter blades on hand to minimize down time.

Super Moon Well...I think the Wave + IS “the NEW Wave”. Same thing. My guess is that calling it the Wave + just differentiates it from the older style without the replaceable cutters. We’ll just have to wait and see if they continue to call it the Wave + or if, after time, it’s just known as the Wave. 🤷🏼♂️

I have the original wave and second version of wave:) but not this one. The older Leatherman's are stamped USA on them. Why do they not do that now?
40belowful Not sure. To my knowledge, they are made IN HOUSE (check out the video in the link below). If you're still not sure, I would contact Leatherman directly.

Because California sued them because half the tools on a leatherman are made foreign and they are just built in the usa. Not all made in house anymore. Because of this, the usa on the plier heads were removed for legal reasons
@The Shaggy Rifleman its not that as much as they lied about where they made them. Look it up. Some state sued them for it. And it was cali to my knowledge
@The Shaggy Rifleman im not bashing leatherman. I love my American gerbers even though some parts are made in taiwan. Except the centerdrive, that to my knowledge is 100% made here. As for leatherman they went to court in 2005 or so because liberal cali made a law that prohibited the use of the term 'made in the usa' on products that arent 100% made here. Leathermans plierheads are cast in mexico as far as i was last told, and there file or sawblade is cut and made im Switzerland. Most of the rest of it is made here. I still think they are, and i retract my statement saying they lied about it. For every other states law to this day is fine with (mostly) made in the usa stuff. Cali wasnt having it ig and as an agreement leatherman simply dropped the USA on the plier heads and cali dropped the law suit. Hence why they no longer say usa, answering the guys question above

Grobnik Honestly I’m not sure. Leatherman only allows a couple of different fonts so it shouldn’t be hard to find it on their website if you choose to do it.

Mine has held up well so far but I think with heavy use, some wear will be inevitable.

You could try that, but I don’t think it will be enough to get the residue off. That’s why I think the gun cleaning solution is excellent. You only have to do it one time.

Steven Davis Here is my input on the Charge plus. I have owned a Skeletool CX and a couple of the bigger tools for quite some time but have never had the Wave. Since it was the company's best seller, I decided to try it to see why. While I know that the Charge plus has better material, I wasn't ready to drop the money on it. Also, I'm not sure if this makes sense, but the black on the Charge plus looks kinda cheap to me. It probably feels amazing in your hand and it is obviously good quality (made by Leatherman)… But unfortunately it kind of comes across as one of those generic multi tools with the black. I do wish I owned one… But then again… I wish I owned every Leatherman. Maybe someday. Despite "barking" back at you somewhat… I realize the video was very long. I have gained a huge respect for guys who have tons of videos and tons of subscribers… Because, only in the last month and a half or so… I have come to realize how hard it is to really put out a good video that is original and not too long yet still informative and entertaining. For now....it's just kinda "getting my feet wet".

I also have a Black Oxide Surge (heavy, but awesome), and a Black Oxide Rebar, amongst other Leatherman tools.
