  • Shifting is tricky, especially for beginners. I did my best to give the basics, and simplify it a bit. This video also includes some handy exercises. Hope it helps!!

    Thanks for adding the slow motion part. It really helps a non-string expert understand what's going on. Well done!

      Lol, I think it's a bit early to start practicing shifting if you started 3 days ago. You still have to develop your finger muscles and get used to where the notes are on the top of the fingerboard before you start venturing lower to the higher positions

    I've tried to concentrate on my elbow when shifting. It has helped to make the shift more relaxed. In addition it makes it more natural and smooth shift imo. This is great tutorial, especially the supporting finger theory. Its hard to achieve absolute purity and pitch but after 1000 correct repeats it should be okay :D

      Haha After 1,000 correct repeats, I do hope you take some time to rest and stretch!

    I like when u are using the tapes they help better see where ur fingers are heading. Can u make a video on what positions are and how,they are used. Are the positions located on the fingerboard or the scale being used?Ty!

    Thank you for the video. When you are shifting from the B in first position, are you shifting to the D (third finger) in the video?

    This is a most helpful video. This will sound silly but I began playing guitar before age 5 and I wish I had discovered the cello first. Compared to one of the string instruments, playing the guitar is kind of like pushing buttons - frets make it so much easier. Consequently, I never developed the confidence and trust in myself to move my hand 18 inches on a slab of ebony and expect it to be in tune. PS: I don't mean to snoop but I have the same cello stand as you. In Los Angeles we have earthquakes and I feel my cello is safe on that stand. I recently bought one for my guitar but now they have stopped carrying them in our music stores. Greg

      +Dorky White Guy Guitar certainly still has it's challenges though!! I am currently trying to learn it, and feeling fairly unsuccessful. I'm not very good at keeping rhythm, so strumming is a bit difficult. Lol I really like my cello stand! I wish I could get another one for my electric cello.

    Hi Sarah:) Watching your videos is really helping me learn cello by myself. I have a question for you for this video, though. When DO you use thumb position? And do you really use it from the 1 of 4th position?

    Hi Sarah! Thank you for all your help with your videos, you are so talented! I'm a braaannddd new beginner and this is a basic question I know, but when I transition to other notes, the strings always screech... I get a pretty good sound just playing one single note at a time though. Any advice?

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Meg Fritz well, it's hard to say without seeing you play, but my guess is that your bow hand is reacting to your left hand. This means that at every note change, your bow hand is tensing. It could also be caused by a crooked bow, skidding, etc.. my guess though is that you're just squeezing and putting to much pressure.

    OK I"m 70 and starting the cello for a new life challenge. Great information for position exercises. Question: I'm working with a cello essentials booklet and struggle with shifting from position 1 to 3 with string of quarter notes in each measure (estimate 80 speed). I can't figure out how to shift that quickly and I don't believe sliding will work as you demonstrated. When I go from 1st to 4th, I've trained my hand to hit the body and my fingers hit the correct 4th position, so that works with a practice string of quarter notes. Any suggestions to solve my conundrum are deeply appreciated....

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh gosh, to very difficult to explain without a specific example. It depends on whether you want an open string sound, how quickly the passage is going, what notes follow that specific passage...

    If you were shifting to 1st position to 4th position, would you still skid your finger on the string or pick it up and move it to 4th?

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You want your fingers to stay as connected as possible during shifting.

    Your cello is much louder than your voice. So when I keep a tolerable volume of your cello I cannot hear you well. I am watching this video on my desktop.
    If you can balance the sound it would be great !. Many thanks for the nice video
