  • In this video I travel to Delaware and meet with my friend Jim Whattam. Jim has been working with segmented woodturning for several years. We met at his shop to shoot a video for our woodturning club, the First State Woodturners, on how to get started with Segmented Woodturning. Jim explains everything necessary to build a multi segment ring and finishes with a project where a ring is added to a solid rough turned bowl

I usually cannot sit and watch long TH-cam videos however I watched every second of this and learned so much. I will definitely be watching Part 2 as well. Everything is explained is great detail.

I try to give as much info as possible to be as helpful as possible when I make a video. Jim was a great fit since he's of the same mindset. Attention to detail helps everyone be more successful. Thanks for watching!

Good full and detailed coverage of the material you chose to include. The surprise to me was that the bandsaw could be used as well as the miter and table saws. Both the blue tape and the zip ties use was instructive. I will seek out Part 2.

About an hour ago, you presumed we had a lathe if we were watching this. Errr not yet ! Recently retired, pretty good at DIY and making things with wood. Anyhow, something turned up in my you tube feed about bowl turning, and I have toying with the idea. Long story short, Yep going to go and buy one this week, and it's thanks to people like you that have inspired me. This was a long and at times head scratching video, but I got my head in gear and grasped everything you said, I could have probably figured it all out myself, however your lessons on high school simple geometry, brought back a few long lost memories, and basically made it all seem so easy... Cup of coffee time, then onto part 2. Thank you so much for your time, your knowledge, your skills both in the art and the teaching. You are about to get a new subscriber, so I can binge until my lathe arrives. Again, THANK YOU

Hi and thanks for watching. I'll pass your comment on to Jim. We made this video and part 2 as demo videos for our Woodturning club. Jim is our club's resident expert in segmented Woodturning. He does an outstanding job explaining all the steps in detail so someone interested in this technique can be as successful as possible.
This video is on my channel because not only did I shoot and edit the video, but Jim and I share a similar philosophy. I know some people like the short video format, but with some things, a bit more detail is necessary. As you can see, segmented Woodturning can be a bit confusing, especially to a beginner. Tge goal was to make it simple enough so everyone could feel comfortable trying it
Thanks for watching and best of luck with your new lathe!

Thanks for watching! You should be able to find a link to the materials in the video description. It's a link to the First State Woodturners website. If the link is broken, please let me know.

Also important is setting the blade to 90 degrees with an electronic blade meter.

Thanks for the comment. Those electronic digital blade gauges are pretty handy
