I remember PREORDERING this and getting a second classics prime for the occasion. To this day I maintain that this kind of addon is my ideal third party release, something I desperately want to return, and most important of all this thing stinks to high heaven.
Doesn't matter if it's an old product nor even perfect, I still love the overall look of this Magnus which I still want in my collection. Btw his enormous cannon is literally his own version of the BFG 9000
Honestly I this figure to thank for introducing me to third party. The animated video specifically looked absolutely amazing and for this I must thank the TH-cam algorithm
I like how the design of ultra Magnus armor really feels like something from the WFC/FOC games, and my first introduction with this kit was a old 3d promotional animation TH-cam video for this kit,I wish if they did use some inspirations from this kit to make kingdom ultra Magnus better
Love this thing so much. This was when it really hit people, 'I think there's really something to this whole third-party transforming robots idea'. Everything before this was just weapons and little novelty things. This was not only some amazing engineering that felt like it could never have come from HasTak, the LOOK of the figure is so damn unique. Like, halfway between Gundam and Transformers Animated. I will say also that, yes, it takes several transformations for the parts to loosen enough to not be terrifying. Mine's holding up still.
While I don't own it, this thing's always had a place in my heart as a historical artifact. Same goes for FansProject's old Bruticus set and TFC Hercules aka Devastator (the only one of these mentioned I do own). They were just the leaps for the Third Party scene, sets that may be a little dated now but really stood out from the pack in showing the merits of 3P stuff. They almost make me sad, too, because there's really been nothing out of the 3P scene since that feel like they've truly broken ground in the same way. Nowadays 3rd Party falls into the categories of "MP, Legends, or IDW-based", which are really genres that grew over time rather than catching eyes with new age stunners like these. I'd love to see something unique again from the third party scene, something that feels truly artistic while still filling a notable need in a collection. But to be honest? I'm not sure it's even possible.
Man, I love OG Fans Project. This one, the revenge of the fallen Superion addon set, and the Protector Armour for Classics Rodimus still remain the Jewels of my collection!
@@_V.Va_ you young wimpersnapper must not be familiar with impossible toys level of quality, especially thier awful tertajets. Fansproject raised the bar of standard of what 3p products should be forevermore and how often they had product out to keep attention. Quakewave was not capable of holding the entire genre up, as Fanstoys would release scoria v1 for another year and a half. Fansproject and maketoys walked uphill both ways and got drafted into WW1 so masterpiece 3p could twerk and eat hot chip.
@@_V.Va_ True, maybe. But he helped inspire it. This kit caused the white repaint Classics Optimus to triple in price almost over night. I still think this is what inspire the dual rocket launchers on the CW one.
this was outstanding when it came out, especially as the g1 Magnus was the only one we had that wasn't a white Prime. And the articulations where still good for the time
The classics Optimus mold is my favorite transformer toy of all time. The Knight Ginrai version is my favorite. I have every single version of the mold ever released besides the Lucky Draw version (that I hope to one day have) if that shows how much I love it lol. This upgrade kit is pretty cool, may have to get one someday.
Man, I remember being on the early days of the internet and seeing the Transformers Cybertron-style transformation of this set on baby youtube. I used to watch that all the time, it made me so happy! I'm kinda bummed I never got to own a copy, but given how much it goes for on the aftermarket, I'm okay with just tracking down that video again.
Great review! Thank you! I got this set when it came out, and I love it. Looks great on the Henkei Magnus. Makes for one of the great IDW "Historical Ultra Magni".
I really need to delve into Classics. Got that Optimus and Megatron Platinum Edition 2 pack and a Hot Rod and they're all pretty fantastic. I think those 3 figures are the ones everyone has though.
Missed out on Optimus and Megs myself, but ended up with two Hot Rods and an Astrotrain. I look around for an inexpensive HR upgrade kit from time to time, as I picked up the Targetmaster FP made during one of the many previous BBTS or TFSource sales and that dude is fun to fiddle with.
Classics Ultra Magnus was never really on my radar. However Prime and Megatron both were. And as of this video, I just got Megatron, so one more to go.
i JUST finished putting the optimus into his armor and i love it. sure it isnt gonna win any posing contests but oh boi does it look cool and beefy. love it!
When I was little, I heard about this set, and always wanted it. I eventually ended up trading my Ultra Magnus to a friend of mine who had an ROTF Voyager prime.. Big regret on that part, because I ended up breaking it within a week. Sad, but I still entertain the idea of looking and maybe one day getting Classics Magnus and TFX-01. Just to placate younger me. I wonder if I can find one in good shape sometime soon.. Thanks for taking me back, Gav!
100% me too with this! I grew up watching their promo video for the set years ago and always wanted it. I actually own the set now and while it is extremely dated and can hardly move, I still absolutely love the style and design of him with the big bulky parts and heafty looking presence, like a fantasy knight in full plate armor. Which is always how I imagined magnus and tbh I don't think many have come close to that vibe. If a company came out and made a more modern and better articulated version I would buy it in a heartbeat!
@@Theover4000 I think one that comes close is the Iron factory city commander, but I find him a bit too small and doest have the gimmick of it being a set of armor over a smaller shell. Which isn't a huge deal breaker like the size is, but it does lose that charm.
Cool set, I got this recently and am thinking about getting the Nemesis Prime trailer as well. The white gun in the upgrade kit has two handles one in the middle for small Magnus and one on the end for Big Magnus.
I got a version of classics prime last year from toy-fu's stream & classics prime is a fantastic toy even now, a chunky & hella fun voyager with actual weight that makes it feel unlike most anything in my collection bar maybe MP grimlock. Classics prime is one of those moulds that I can highly recommend grabbing because it is just such a damn good figure even 16 odd years later, it it just that good of a voyager figure
I keep seeing this done with that gun turning into a giant pistol when it supposed to go onto the hand backwards and flip down to make a hand mounted rifle.
Great review. I haven't really jumped at 3rd party. I did get a few 3rd part items for my Titans Returns Sixshot. But none of the items really impressed me. But this set does have an interesting appeal. Again, great review.
I think this was a much needed accessory. I always hated the 'White Prime" repaints Hasbro kept on putting out. I get they want to make the most out of the mold, but really, if you're going to repaint the cab for Magnus, they also should have included a trailer that turns him into a brick like the G1 version. This was a much desired accessory if I remember correctly, to the point I think I've even read that some knock off's were made as well
I have the Classics Magnus but, given I don't have this exo-suit, I wish it was Classics Prime. Still, agree it is a great redesign from a time when they gave G1 a fresh twist. As for the expansion pack, well, Magnus _is_ the original brick, after all.
NGL I remeber watching the animation for this years ago, and never being able to find the set for a cheap price, its basically why I bought earth-rise magnus, cause they're borderline the same, Its just a shame I cant make it to the convention next year to finally see what the City Commander is actually like
The Fansproject TFX-06 Parallax upgrade for the vanilla Classics Optimus is fantastic and on sale on BBTS for only $15.00 especially if you get a spare Classics off ebay for a tenner like I did, you'll probably end up spending more on the postage than you do on the toys, but it's definitely worth the money.
haven't thought about THIS guy since i was younger. that gun is too big (this is a good thing - if it were merely "of reasonable size" that wouldnt be nearly as memorable).
Not sure if you’d like to see how it was displayed several years ago when it was released but I thought you might enjoy this th-cam.com/video/NcZvPgNcHI8/w-d-xo.html
With how prolific third-party add-ons have become, it’s good to look back and realize that they’ve always been high risk, high reward.

Another fine addition to the holy magnus shrine, yes…
Saw this as a kid and been after it and classics Magnus since!
... Just don't tell 2008 me that I haven't gotten it almost 15 years later. :P
The Classics Magnus and OP toys are some of the best ones from that line.
What a joy. I just picked up classics Nemesis prime with the same add-on kit from TFcon Chicago 2022
This was the first third party transformers item I'd even seen, I didn't even know you could do third party stuff before seeing a review of this guy!
