Love the technical artistry of this hard working young band, trying to make a name for themselves. I liked the expression on your face when the bassist showed up. If you want to hear the lead guitarist sing, try their MV Bright Star from a few weeks ago--the video includes images of them playing on the bloody street in the US. Thanks for another good reaction.

Although they now have branched out into vocals and the like. I still love their instrumentals with 'Church' being personally the most moving. Enjoy Asterism and hopefully they will become bigger as time goes on. Hal Ca is a phenomenal player and still so young. Kids in Japan are given the right education.

While the playing was fantastic - it is the fact that they were able to compose such an amazing piece of music that was so impressive. Lots of people can play stuff written by others, but not many can compose music that is this complex and sounds this good.

Oh, I've been waiting for this video. :) And the moment you commented on the 7 strings of the bass, I thought to myself that you would stumble over those words later. 🤭 Miyu is good, damn good. And this was just a glimpse of it. Bottom line, exactly the reaction I was expecting. ✌🏻 And even if Band-Maid is my #1, I agree with you. As far as technical ability goes, at best very few can hold a candle to these three exceptional musicians here. Admittedly, I don't think Akane gives Mio a chance on the drums, but I would still love to see these two bands on stage together. A joint solo section with Kanami and Hal-Ca (Haruka) or a bass duel between Misa and Miyu? 🔥🤘🏻

I love instrumentals, I love technical prowess and I love when the two are combined, but only in small doses. I really respect these (at the time of this performance) kids and like most kids that are really, really good at something, they like to show off a bit and for this band that's a good thing. But as they get older that urge to melt the audience will be tempered and smoothed out. Now that they are in their 20's their music has matured and to my ear is a lot better for the restraint they show. Thanks for the review.

See, this is _exactly_ the sort of thing that I would listen to. It reminds me of the years after I quit music school and worked a 1700-0200 shift at a recording studio, making carts of jingles and bumpers for radio stations and driving around in my black Toyota with the ash trays full of "that's _INCENSE_ Mom!" listening to Rush and King Crimson. Life was simpler back then. Nobody even knows what radio is anymore. FWIW, youtube comments say Miyu didn't buy that bass, he made it. Talk about pretentious! You'd have to be an astrophysicist to make your own bass guitar!

Love the moment that happens in every reaction to this song when reactors realize what they are really witnesing . as to the drummer: while he's not particularly flashy, he does certainly "hold it down" ... and as far as i can tell (though i could be wrong), he seems to not even use an in-ear click-track (or any other sort of monitor, for that matter) which is absolutely unheard of in 2023. timekeeping truly is an underappreciated skill.

On stage she is a monster ... but I digress ... Miyu and Mio are also really great musicians too! They do a good job of sharing the spotlight ... but it is really difficult not to remain transfixed on HAL-CA most of the time.

I hesitated before clicking on this because I wasn't sure I wanted to hear you taking the piss out of maybe my favourite piece of music. Glad you appreciated it, and that I just about managed to contain myself when you called Miyu pretentious!
On the comparison to my favourite band, I think what sets Band-Maid apart is the songwriting. I don't think Asterism are quite at the that level yet in that regard (although they have moments when they are, like this song and much of the Guernica+a album, and they're still very young). But you were comparing the technical skill, and honestly, by that criterion I'd put Asterism ahead of Band-Maid and every other Japanese band, with the possible exception of Sokoninaru.
They (mostly the guitarist) do sometimes sing these days. Most of their long-term fans much prefer their instrumental music, but you could try Fiction for example. But as a Miyu fan, I'd recommend another instrumental piece, Church.

Ach, I never go in deliberately intending to take the piss, I feel like I usually try and give everyone a fair shake!
I reckon… this band are better technically, BAND-MAID write stronger songs. But like you said, they’re young, and you learn that stuff as you grow and develop as a band, so it’s exciting to think where they will be in five years.
But you’re right, Sokoninaru might just be slightly better technically, cause… wow lol

7 string is BS....that is a custom made one of a kind bass from ESP and was made for him alone when he was 17!!!!! Hal-Ca is 16 here on the beat up thrift shop Yamaha/Pacifica guitar. You just watched high school kids who had homework to do after this set, let that sink in for a minute. They write, compose and play all their own material and while they have become more progressive their fusion of Rock/Metal/Jazz is amazing. MY husband is a Hendrix fanatic (saw him before and after his tour in Nam) and he loves Hal-Ca. She was born to be a Rock smtar and has that vibe every time she hits the stage. The brothers Miyu/bass and Mio/drums are equally talented but never get the shine time except for Scuttle Buttin LIVE in Texas,US when they were the same age. They do have a lot of heart in their music.🌹🤘🌹
I prefer Matt and Tosin in Animals as Leaders (Metal Prog Instrumental). "Even more pretensious 😂🤣😅😏"
I prefer the heavier higher level technical skill in AAL plus they tend to use a lot more tapping, which I find as relaxing as Dimash's high staccato notes.
If interested in a solo with Tosin Abasi "Wave of Babies" or a Live "Brain Dance" or "Red Miso" They usually show the guitars more than this video, especially in thier older MV's like "CAFO"

Great, thanks for this one, the main reason I thought of suggesting Asterism was because of firstly a great sound, but, because of their youth, they’re only teenagers here, and the guitarist wrote this song when she was only around 14 years old FFS, (I was out catching frogs in the local creek when I was 14 !! )Next, I just imagined what’d it be like to head into my local pub for a beer and see these 3 in the corner smashing it out , (hopefully before I die) to see him absolutely slaying the 7 string bass tacke a gander at some of their other live songs, the bass is playing rolling melodies in the background.

Bassist strums the rhythm portion of songs on the bass guitar as well. The 7 string gives him enough range.

Oh, on a technical level they're way better than Band-Maid. This is nigh Animals as Leaders level playing. And better composition than Animals as Leaders, with far better soul. The comparison with Band-Maid is sort of pointless, however, as the biggest similarity between the bands is that they're Japanese, and both have female guitarists? Not salient points for comparison. Band-Maid is an act that thrives less on their (excellent, but not superlative) technical skills, and more on how they vibe as an outfit, with outstanding composition.
So if I'm going to be needing a kick in the backside to get going, as I often do, it'll be Band-Maid... but I'll be damned if Asterism hasn't found it's way on to my deep technical grooves playlist for when I want to get down and get into some pure, spirited virtuosity. Different bands for different musical needs. These guys are amazing.

What a tepid commentary on the guitarist) The author emphasized his annoying bassist, who has done a lot of big name players. But he neglected the real talent, 16 year old Hal-Ca, who was awarded the title of the strongest guitarist in the world by many music critics. This young lady's playing surprises and impresses, especially she is the author of the vast majority of her works.
