The way I understand it is the one closest to the road aims back at the house. the one closest to the house aims at the street so that is the one you use to blast clogs in the main line back towards the street.

To be clear this has nothing to do with unclogging a sewer line. This is designed to be a temporary stopper to be put in and stop sewage from being pushed back into the sewer line from the city side due to flooding. In that scenario I would put it in the one closest to the house but would imagine it wouldn't matter which one it goes in.

Dammit that doesn't answer my question however because I have 2 pipes about 4-5 inches apart, 7 feet from my front door, at least 50 ft from the street. These 2 pipes with caps are from the 1960's and are my cleanouts. There is little to no info about this setup. There is a water line that doesn't fall all the way down and I can see the reflection of light bouncing off the water from 1 pipe to the other.

You may have to have a sewer clean out company come and help you find the right pipe. Maybe they have an idea about your set up.

hello , i know you posted question 11 months ago , but i have the exact same situation , i need to drain my pool , but am unsure which cleanout is the correct one to use. i guess either one might be ok for my useage , but did you find out info / which one did you use ? thank you sir , update = i found out that i should use the cleanout closest to the house from local municipality answer.

@@w.l.graves7228 hey there. Yes I agree with that answer. What I have come to understand is this setup, 2 pipes, leads ultimately to 1 line that leads to the street and the house. Either of the 2 pipes is sposed to indicate the travel. So the pipe on my left, closest to house, would be for the direction of the street and the one on the right would be towards my house when trying to unclog the line respective to the situation. I was getting confused because I was using the one on the left for the street but the snake wouldn't go. Like if the pipe was capped off in that direction. I worked it all out but I was frustrated at why they used 2 cleanout pipes instead of one.

@@LexTheLionLocc right thanks , i think they are both street 90's,
rounded elbow 45 deg. all old homes had just 1 , till plumbers or codes or engineers decided 2 would be good for specific drain / backflow uses i guess.

@@w.l.graves7228 from what I researched the pipes are sposed to angle to guide the tool into its corresponding direction, the elbow, but mine are just straight down to the line. So whatever they were going for seems to not apply and is compareable to 1 single cleanout pipe. Its so redundant for what seems to be all the wrong reasons lol.
