Martin mate, I've been a Nikon user since F401x and slide film era. It's really a breath of fresh air watching value added content here. Have just replaced the aperture motor control unit on my D800e (was quite the operation) and also picked up a mint D600 with grip. Took a small Sony APS-C and the D600 on our Japan trip just recently and while you can't beat the autofocus accuracy/convenience of the Sony in fast paced scenarios/weird angles, whenever we had the time to slow down and take photos in a more relaxed environment, the Nikon's image quality just stood out. My wife could immediately spot the pictures taken with the D600.

Couldn't agree more, the output of this camera is just so lovely I'll never part with mine. It's a real gem and feels like it was amongst the last of the Nikons to have the filmic colours before they became more neutral (accurate) such as with the D750. Of the current cameras on the market only Pentax, for me, gives a similar feel to the colours. Great vid 👍

I agree 100%. It's a fantastic camera and still amazing for handling most jobs.
I also find D600 files a bit nicer than D750. The colours are just right! I have been using 2x D600 bodies for the last 10 years or so (they were bught second hand) and later bought a D750 brand new ... the D750 is only for 70-200mm F2.8 as its able to lock on to eyes..... but D600 stays with 24-70mm F2.8 and does all the work with flash as well when I shoot weddings and events. I only use center AF with D600, so AF is enough for me when i am using the 24-70 or any wider lenses. I love that it has 2 SD card slots, is lightweight and are so cheap as a lot of people are scared of the "oil splatter issue". That issue was resolved after first few batches and any affected shutter was replaced by Nikon even after many years later. I have used this camera many times in light rain and has never let me down.
It's a Toyota Corolla of cameras.

I bought my D600 new when it came out and cannot get rid of it even after a few years with a used D810, which I adore, too, and more recently a Z8. The colors on the D600 really seem to be special. People often comment on the colors of my images from it. While I love the Z8, I can only hope that this love eventually matches my deep love for the D600. There’s still so much newness in the Z8, and it takes time to really know. So far, so good cuz I’m just back from my first trip with the Z8.

I bought the D600 a year ago on your recommendation and totally agree with you Martin. I do have a speck of dust in the mirror box but it doesnt bother me. My D600 overexposes slightly, to my taste, so I underexpose one third of a stop to get better saturation in camera output. It makes quite a considerable difference. Cheers Martin great stuff again

yeah they do overexpose and i under expose 0.7 and you can actually set this in the yellow menu on the pencil menu to make it a permanent setting which is what i do on mine. this means its overwriting the built in default zero point for exposure. maybe i should make a shorts video on this.

    D600 and D700 User here.
You are 100% right to this camera.
For a general use its one the best cameras i have used.
The only downsides on the D600 for me are the clustered 31 focus points sometimes are a little off and slow (prosumer focus technology??), and its less configurable than the D700 ( the ok button to 100% zoom in review for example).
For me D700 for faster and accurate shooting (daytime street, concerts), and D600 for portraits, events, night street. Although i toggle between the 2 very often.
The colors on both - OH MY GOOD!!!! ( slight vantage to the D700)

This is funny, the "oh if I shot this photo on XXX camera it would have maybe been better" and it requires more work... that's exactly the feeling I had when I tried the D600 after using a D700 for so long... I really didn't like it. It's obviously very good, just not my preference. I would still take a D600 over something like a Canon 5D3 or something like that, I tend to prefer Nikon tones in general.
The only Nikon sensor that managed to capture that "oh it's good to go already" when editing the files that was released after teh D700 was the Z6 / D780. There is a little thing in that sensor that makes me shoot that camera more and more each time I pick it up.
    So far my favourite Nikon sensors I think it would be ranked this way (among the ones I have tried) : D700 > Z6 > D300 > D2X > D200/D80 > D600 > D810 > D800 > Z5 > D750. I haven't tried any of the 24MP or 20MP APS-C cameras, nor have I tried the 45MP cameras. I've heard good things about the color rendition of the 45MP sensor in the D850

With my D610, I shot 6,000 photos at a music festival with a stabilized lens and occasionally using live view. Still had 1/4 battery life left at the end. As a lapsed Pentax devotee, l’m rather more catholic lately with cameras and their lens offerings. Olympus M4/3 light and compact for travel. Retro 4/3 for CCD sensors. Sony A7 for vintage Takumar, Tamron Adaptall, German and Soviet glass. Fujifilm X-1 too.
Mirrorless has replaced the DSLR for the must have ‘new tech’ $$$ consumers. Bequeathing ‘older and wiser’ users the often bountiful aftermath of some great kit.
Last year was Nikon D600, D200 matched with a D300. This year Canon, almost accidentally, as Nikon mounts for birding super-telephotos were prohibitively pricey. 40D, 7D and 6D.
The cycle now swings back to Pentax K200D and Pentax Kr rescued from storage and miraculously functioning. I live in the top end tropics. Is the grail a Pentax K-1 mk ii?

Yay, nice overview with great tips (definitely gonna try that back/front-button focusing/spot-metering technique)! Love my D600 but it's funny hearing it being praised for its compact size and light weight. Since having bought one as my first full-frame DSLR last July, I'm still getting used to the bulk and weight of this camera after having spent nearly a decade with the D3300. Certainly wouldn't want anything heavier and its nice to still have the D3300 as a featherweight option for less demanding tasks.
Mirrorless offerings hold little appeal for the modest performance improvements (low-light / high-ISO being the main one of interest for me), and the need for an FTZ adapter with good F-mount glass I already own makes them positively unattractive. Besides, showing my age perhaps, I have a soft spot for SLR camera systems and optical viewfinders. I never understood how taking these away became a feature costing a lot more money.

The points advanced about the that camera are valid. However, the only area I do not agree with is the focus system. My D600 had oil spot issues. Nikon exchanged it for a D610. I noticed the auto white balance and focusing was better. In time the focus system would struggle in on location shooting. I upgraded to the D810, and the focus system was much snappier and accurate than the 600 series.
Last year I tried using a D610 again with a 80 - 200 F2.8. It was a bit frustrating to use. It would often not lock on the subject. Yes, it was an outdoor and studio shoot.

( landscape, street photography, still life and macro ) I'd like to start shooting with a full frame DSLR. I like fixed focal lengths. I started with film in the early 90s. Then I switched to digital in 2016 with a Pentax aps-c. I currently have a Fujifilm (X-T3). I shoot a lot with 35mm or 23mm and 16mm for landscape ( on APS-C ). I'm leaning towards: Canon 6D or Nikon D600. Which of the two do you recommend? Thank you. Greetings from Italy.

I've got the D610 and have been looking at the sony a6400 because ou the autofocus. I wish the D610 had the D7100 autofocus system. I own both and a fusion of them would be perfect. Also, the raw files tend to be greenish.

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  26 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

youll probably just end up back at the d610 because you will be swapping one thing thats nice to have(autofocus on the sony) vs something you cant replicate(d610) but like me, you will probably have to go through this process yourself to confirm it, id just suggest if you get the a6400 keep the d610, because at first you will be so happy with the focus then you eventually turn back to the d610, probably.

So if I framed it through the viewfinder, then used the back screen (or even through the viewfinder) just to get the metering right, the images were almost always right straight out of camera, or easily editable due to a great dynamic range. :)

Martin, I don’t know if this has already been mentioned but the Nikon D600 did have that unfortunate issue where it would splatter bits of crud around the mirror box and onto the sensor. Nikon HQ’s initial reaction was disappointing until there was a class action suit taken out in America and I think something similar in Europe. I bought the D600 when it came out and liked it but I possibly over-reacted and my pants went on fire over the possibility that my model would throw stuff around, so I changed it for something else. All that being said I’m sure a second hand D600 from a reputable vendor will be tickety-boo. Enjoyed your video as always.

Well Martin I need to stop watching your videos just before I go to sleep. Last night I dreamt I had two weddings to photograph on more or less the same afternoon. I had a Nikon F5 and a Hasselblad but I realised I didn’t have enough Fuji 400H for each camera and I was in a bit of a panic and the light was fading too. Funnily enough I did a wedding many, many years ago for a couple on a shoestring budget. I shot only two or three rolls of film on my battered Rolleicord . So roughly 36 exposures to choose from. I think a lot of wedding photographers would have nightmares if they were restricted to three rolls of 120 film. I know I would. The groom at this wedding became a good friend but not until a couple of decades later when he moved into a house a few doors down from me. I had completely forgotten I had photographed his wedding until I was on a mammoth negative scanning session and found the original negatives and thought “wait a minute, that looks like…”. It was him. You could have knocked me over with a feather but we had a good laugh about it. 😂 BTW, I’m not hankering after a Nikon D600 again. No dedicated back button focus? I’m using a second hand but minted Nikon D200 just now. I feel the files from this camera is the closest I can get to a film experience. I have the disadvantage of growing up as a film photographer, so digital leaves me a bit cold and film is stupidly expensive now.

both are good options, the iso on the 6d is better than the d600, d600 has better focus overall and better dynamic range and more friendly to shooting auto iso in aperture priority, 2 memory card slots vs 1 on the 6d. Plus nikon has an excellent 1.8g prime range that canon cant touch. So my choice for weddings would be the d600 always for weddings. 20mm 1.8g 35mm 1.8g and 85mm 1.8g, add a used 24-70 2.8g the non VR version and 2 x d600. you can do a lot with that setup and a couple of flashes.

I would pass on the D600 and get the D610 to not risk the chance of the oil or dust issues. There are credible/real reasons the D600 was replaced within a year. Anecdotal evidence may say they're fine, but the overwhelming majority had issues, enough that Nikon had repair programs in place that covered even out of warranty cameras. Nikon is god awful when it comes to customer service, they've stolen thousands from me on trade-ins (received it both times, I have the proof by signature/address, and then they just never mentioned it again or gave me credit) and I'm far from being alone. If they actually put in a program in place for repairs that even covered out of warranty, then it was a large problem. There's a reason the D600's are both rare and inexpensive, that's almost never a combination that screams quality (nobody bought them in the 11 months or so they were on market, and nobody wants them).

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  26 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

i felt more like it was the first batch, because from what I can see it seems like nikon fix a problem without admitting to it, i dont know that for a fact it justs seems that way to me. Then the fallout was so bad they had to rebrand it with the d610 badge on the fixed cameras. As someone that was really into this range at the time when it came out there was a lot of talk of it being fixed but the d610 was just a branding thing to regain trust. I cant really disagree with anything you are saying as such. Screwing up the first batch of a product is almost a product release strategy for them.

@@MartinCasteinCorrect Martin. I had it on pretty good authority back in the day from someone who worked for Nikon that it was not a design fault, more a manufacturing issue. Only affected a relatively small number of bodies from the earlier production run. They were initially selling like hot cakes and QA was basically insufficient.
“Dust” was an added issue only because all camera bodies collect dust, but once you mix dust with a little oil it becomes a significantly bigger problem to remove. The rebrand was just that, the name D600 having been completely sullied. Great camera, Nikon could and should have handled it all very differently, although in the end they did do everything they could, including repairing out of warranty bodies. Though in most cases, given a certain number of actuations, a thorough clean was really all that was needed. Only a very small number had a replacement shutter mechanism fitted.
If you do find one used now, it will almost certainly (99.9%) have already been fixed, or much more likely, it never had a problem in the first place. And it will most likely be a bargain.
And for disclosure, I only shoot Canon DSLR so I have no vested interest in Nikon at all. Just wanted to share in case it helps allay any fears. Cheers.
