Every budding photographer should be paying attention to THIS youtube review. This is reality, not hyperbole or shilling that you see mostly in written/video reviews online. As a pro photographer who also reviews cameras online, I can fully endorse this video to photographers who want to hear some truth for a change. Keep it up Martin, we need more of "us" out there, and maybe one day camera companies will start to listen as well. GREAT JOB.

@@MartinCastein I agree with Carl that Martin has hit the nail on the head with this video, regardless of what gear you use. As a professional photographer and filmmaker (shooting a wide range of subjects across 💯 countries and all climates), even in 2023, I still mainly rely on the Nikon superb D800 plus the old but legendary AF-D (bombproof) range of lenses, and a Panasonic GH3 system with.

Yes, Anyone can learn something from Martin. And EVERYBODY can learn something from Photography, as NOONE knows it all. There is ‘something’ about Photography that seems to bring out the snobbery and presumed expertise in some? Just read some of the online forums. Photography should be about enjoying and learning and encouraging others in our shared craft. It would make for better times. Please be kind. Thank You

"You are the photographer. The cameras are the tools. You are transferring your skills through the different cameras" These words should be repeated on any YT photography channel. I have been using cooking as an analogy to photography... there are many ways to interpret a recipe or create a meal; kitchenware are only the tools. Thanks for your input; I am getting to know and appreciate my D800... which I also bought used.

The D800 was the first camera of any brand with 13 stops of DR and it took years for other camera brands do catch up. Most cameras now have gotten to about the same DR but Sony and R Canons to get the extended DR use non-defeatable raw noise reduction, and Canon uses it at low and high ISO with only a narrow range where is is not applied.
I never understood the focus of photography is on bodies and the constant excitement about new models and constantly updating models. If someone is getting better images it is more likely due to more experience of the photographer or honing their style more. Replacing bodies with every release is a poor use of funds. For me, as a studio and location portrait shooter, plus location ballet, opera, and fine art shooter, far more effective use of funds is in lighting and modifiers.
I have the D800 I got in that first week of release. later when I needed two bodies, I added the D850 and then a Z6. Most of my work is on the Z6. It is strange when hobbyists check out my gear on a location shoot, they always comment about my choice of camera for the session, citing later models as if I am handicapped for using a lowly Z6 or D800., as if they could tell the difference between an image shot with any camera from the last 15 years.
Someone with a limited budget is much better off with a rugged 5-10 yo camera and invest in workshops or lighting or professional models or MAU, lights, for portrait shooters, or a lighter tripod if a landscape shooter

I am now a GFX user, but I still have my D800 and currently have the battery on recharge as I plan on using it in a few days. I genuinly miss using that camera. I was going through some old photos and actually realised that I took some really strong shots with it. You don't realise how much you miss something until you don't use it anymore. I love the GFX, but I miss the speed, simplicity and OVF of that thing. Pure enjoyment using that DSLR.

I sold my D800 about a year ago and almost instantly regretted it. In terms of colour, dynamic range and resolution there are few other cameras that can match it for the price if any, the images can be simply stunning straight out of camera. After kicking myself for a year and trying other cameras and systems I have just bought another one along with the superb Tokina 100mm F2.8 macro. Fantastic camera. Cheers John Pouw NZ

I haven’t upgraded my D800 since I got it back in 2012. It still continues to produce amazing images for me :) The only other camera purchase I have made since then are old film cameras and prime lenses. I _recently_ picked up a Fuji X100V for an everyday / travel camera, when I don’t want to lug the old beast around.
Re: durability, you’ll have a hard time breaking the D800. That thing has been all around the world with me, from the dusty, hot Australian Outback to the freezing Icelandic shores. I’ve dropped it on rocks, it’s blown over on tripods, it’s been rained on, slushed on, mudded on… you name it. The camera is unstoppable.

I've gotten my snowshoes tangled up in branches and landed on my D800 more times than I'd like to admit, had my tripod blown over. Think keeps on clicking, and I think I've taken more damage and aged more than it has. When I added my D850 the resolution difference wasn't exactly noticeable when printed.

And while I really enjoyed my X100V, I sold it (for more than I purchased it for) last year, and upgraded to a Zf... and MAN.. _that_ camera is awesome. The D800 has been relegated to scanning film for me, but I can't bring myself to part with it!@@BorealASMR

I let my 800e go a few years ago and get pangs of regret now and again. Lately I’ve been futzing with my d700 and it’s made me realize that albeit my Z system cameras are nice, sometimes only a dslr will do. A simple uncluttered viewfinder with no focus tracking or face and eye detection boxes darting around is a nice and welcomed break. The new tech is incredible but after a while I’m worn down and the camera has become yet another device I have to interact with.

While not a fulltime photographer solely (I own a marketing agency with a photo studio) I only shoot with a D810 (primary) and a D800 (back-up). The range dynamics are incredible, but so it the enormous files, making them perfect for close crop without image quality loss. Indoor shots using HDR is amazing, as is my macro work (floral and bugs). And no other camera short of medium or large format compares with the headshots and portraits the D810/800 provides.

I have a D800 and D850, both used for landscape and northern lights photography. The dynamic range and image quality is fantastic on both bodies. To anyone in the megapixel race, 36mp is absolutely enough you'll never see that resolution on a screen, and it will print large beautifully. Being able to easily locate controls through gloves in the dark is essential for northern lights, which is the majority of my work, and both bodies offer that.

TH-cam needs more content like yours! Cameras are simply tools with strengths and weaknesses but we are the ones using them for our own creative ends. If there is a better tool for a specific job then it shouldn’t matter what the brand name is. I absolutely love my Canon 5d classic for portraits but it may not be what I would pick for architecture for example and it doesn’t even do video so of course I would need a different tool for that

Just bought a second-hand D800 with 52k clicks as an upgrade from my D600 which was on its last legs, which was in itself an upgrade from a D7100. I don't need all of the modern bells and whistles as I only shoot landscapes or take photos of old buildings. The D800 is all that I need going forward, and I am happy with my purchase. Prior to this I was using a Fuji X-T2 which I still love to bits, but I'm going to have the D800 as my mainstay. Thanks for a great video, really enjoyed hearing your thoughts.

Got my d800 in 2013. Still have it and still use it. D800 was the first camera where resolution simply no longer matters. One thing that it did for me is it gave new life to old lenses. On D90 i could see a bunch of flaws of old lenses like 50mm f/1.4 AIs, but on D800 due to its dynamic range and resolution these "flaws" were transformed into character. Due to pixel pitch you definitely need to slow down with d800 as compared to d90; or d800 will clearly show your poor technique. This is actually a benefit. As you slow down and start to respect the camera, you will pay more attention to composition and will get better pictures.

No builder would be criticised for using Makita tools for one job and DeWalt for another. They use the tool best suited for the job in hand. I don't know when, where or how we ended up here, but I'm glad you addressed the point. Cameras are tools, no matter their brand. We should use them as such. Thanks for the video. Great channel! Got my D600 last year after having used my first DSLR, a D3300, for 9 years, and I'm absolutely loving it. For me it lacks nothing that's really important compared to modern mirrorless cameras costing 10x as much. I also like the diverse MF & AF lens options for Nikon DSLRs, esp. the D600 with the built-in focus motor. But the only reason I can afford such a nice camera system is because most others have either upgraded to or only ever considered much newer and much more expensive gear, so I'm never going to complain about the hype around the latest models.

I just bought one I have been using canon for years but I still have Nikon cameras and
lenses, I never seem to have the heart to get rid of my older cameras. I still have my 5d 1&2 but I saw this with a low-ish 22k shutter count and very nice condition without the notorious grip peeling, I have a few FX lenses from my 35mm Nikon F series which I previously used with my D300 including a 50mm so I have a few starter lenses. I have only tool about 200 shots and I'm just getting used to the feel and trying different setting to see what I can achieve, I'm not a landscape guy mostly industrial archaeology and trains/vehicles if I'm not up to tramping about. When I bought my first camera, it was a tie between Nikon and Canon and until today I think either one would be excellent. In the end, I bought the Nikon. However, being an amateur, I do not want to buy glass for several systems and therefore I stick with Nikon. I could not agree more on the gear aspect. I just bought a D7200 from 2014 because it has practically the same controls then my D750. The D7200 is a great piece of gear I bought for 350 Euros. So I can give it to my kids without getting a panic attack when I see them handling the camera. Dynamic Range, Low light are great. I could not be happier. And I get the glass for what? 35% of the price of lenses for mirrorless bodies.
The D800 or D810 with their professional controls are cool pieces of kit. A little heavy for an amateur. But maybe one day I buy one for dedicated projects.
It is not true, that gear does not matter. But the best gear is worthless in the wrong hands. In order to really benefit from the latest gimmicks often you need very special requirements (for example bird photography). For my use even my D750 or D7200 are more than enough.

I had to smile when you mentioned your dynamic workflow with Canon cameras. I had to do precisely the same. You end up with at least 4 files instead of one, plus the Canon noise starts showing up even in the highlights when you run more than 5 exposures (sunrise landscape with forest, for example) - banding… that’s why I ultimately and permanently switched to Nikon (D810) and will upgrade to a D850 at best. It was quite a plunge, replacing expensive studio equipment with Nikon versions, but it was SO worth it. No Canon even remotely scratched the (Sony) sensor performance of the D810 even a couple of years after its release.
I keep my Canons for macros and as backups, but my heart was stolen by Nikon 😅

I have been using D500s and D7500s for several years. When I began using a Lensbaby Burnside 3500, an Sol 45, and later, a Helios 58mm f2,I desired a full frame camera body. I found a D800
E which was fairly affordable. I love it; it is now my most used camera (except for avian photography and infrared), and I love my D800. I had bought the E model, which is what what was available; I have never used the original D800, so I don't know what the difference would be. I use several FX lenses, a 14mm, 24 f2.8, 35mm f2, 50mm f1.8, my Lensbabies and Helios. I own a 70-200 f2.8 which I use on all my cameras and a 200-500 f5.6 which so far I have used only on my D500. The D800 is fairly hefty, but comfortable enough to carry with a short prime lens. All my cameras are fairly robust, but the D800 may be the toughest of them all. I would love to have a printed manual for the D800, but so far, I am doing well by using the menus.

Just came across this vid, really impressive and informative. I'm an enthusiastic amateur, but don't specialise in any one genre. I shoot anything, anywhere. No flash photography, no photoshop, no coloured filters, Jpeg fine. Luckily enough this hobby/interest have got me to work many music festivals, national and international artists, worked alongside the Royal British Legion, fun community days in parks and a few weddings, sporting events and football/rugby tournaments also. Just as happy plodding along down the local canal with a drone and camera firing away of anything interesting. Just got back from Crete, and did cover the Chania rock festival also, but so hot, sweaty, dry, sunny, the total opposite to South Wales lol. The breeze on the beach sweeping up sand also was a killer to the cameras so took out a Go Pro 12 with waterproof case to save my main cameras. I run 3x D7100, 10.5 fisheye 2.8, 35/50 1.8 primes, 17-50 Sigma 2.8, and a new Sigma 70-200 2.8 also. I can get 1,300 shots off one 32g card, and running 2x slots, also close to 900 pics off one battery, so love that aspect off my setup. I been looking at some used equipment going forward, nervously as I am so familiar with my current setup. Looked at Canon, and even Sony mirrorless, but heard mirrorless has issues in low light, and jucy battery use. The use of mirrorless and one lens abroad would be ideal, and much lighter, but see the lenses are still expensive, even used, so hopefully the go pro and cam phone will do the job with travel. I'm nervously looking to get 2x used bodies in the D800 with very low shutter count. I will wait a few more years or so to go full mirrorless. Do you think the D800 will be a good move in the right direction along the way? Or are their any other options to consider with my current setup? Look forward to this reply, all the best, Simon.

Hey buddy, banging video again mate. Totally agree with your comments regarding Professional photographers and their approach and outlook on the equipment used. Also the D800. I only sold mine to make way for the Canon RP last summer. I last used it, last July on a trip to Ilfracombe combined with a 24-70mm lens, and it proved to be the best choice of kit to take (Heavy, but I'm used to carrying the girlfriends bags around too, so not really and issue LOL).
The lay out, the build and obvious image quality and fabulous dynamic range make it just about as perfect as you could ever want. The battery life was also stella, and with bit of messing around and practice, it's also a formidable tool for video work.
That mentioned dynamic range, has helped me many times when I used it with wedding work I've done, especially when I've experienced sudden, unexpected exposure shifts, due to the fast paced environment I'm in, and the end results have always been impressive, with many a highlight and shadow rescued!
I've almost always used it with a flash at the weddings, and found the balance of the sensor size, dynamic range, and flash exposure to be extremely well balanced (Something Nikon do well) and would also say, I've found I've had presentable results, even at higher ISO's when pushed, and with careful post editing, I've been able to push and pull the exposure and been astonished with the outcome. It may not appear to be the best choice for weddings, but I would say to anyone, this is not only a landscape monster, but also a fabulous tool for weddings too, especially for the price they are now!
I currently still use the D810, and I can honestly say, I'm keeping that, until it fails. It has slightly improved grip and few subtle tweaks (Although not quite as solidly built as the D800 I've noticed) but it has the same benefits of the D800, including the output.
Really looking forward to seeing your content produced with it, when you take it out into the wild, oh, and not forgetting your X-Pro 1 video of course :)
    Take it easy mate.
    All the best

Hey M.C. I’m not locked into camera brands, I just wish at least one manufacturer would make a camera to suit my requirements. Lots of near hits but no coconut.
    1.Full frame
    2.Tilting screen
    3.IBIS
    4.24megapixel sensor,
5.DSLR (not mirrorless) with 100% optical viewfinder made from glass prisms,
6.1:1 and 5:4 as shot aspect ratios
    7. Live view
    8.Canon DSLR ergonomics
Anyhoo, I’ve just purchased (May 15th 2024) the nicest sample I’ve seen so far of a Nikon D800, all the original bits and boxed with battery pack and very low mileage. It arrives tomorrow. 😎

when I buy used (which is always), i always buy a camera body which is already scuffed up a bit with cosmetic damage. 1. Its much cheaper and has no impact on either the images or the functionality, and 2. I'm not ever worried about having to baby it because it already has some marks.

I also like the D600 (I have a D600 with upgraded shutter and a D610). I have big hands, so I find all the Nikon cameras are more comfortable with the battery grip. I like the ability to crop with the D800e. I also agree that brand loyalty is a bit silly. It's like getting angry about whether an Estwing or Craftsman hammer is better. I also use Canon gear and the 5D Mark II corresponds more or less to the D610 and the 5DS to the D800e. Both camera systems have excellent glass available for any sort of need. When people do fall in love with a brand, it's not so bad, though, because passion to use a tool can be inspirational. And if you really enjoy the process I think it helps to produce better work.
Out of the camera, I generally like the Canon colors better. But for mid-grade lenses, the Nikon cameras have an edge. For instance, the Nikkor 180mm f/2.8D IF-ED can be purchased used for the cost of a cheap kit lens. The Canon stuff stops abruptly around 1989, since EF glass is needed. But Nikon lenses go back a couple decades more to the F mount AI glass. Does it sound too old to be useful? "The Afghan Girl" was photographed with a Nikkor 105mm f2.5 AI lens.
Can't say that I like Canon or Nikon better. I tend to use Canon more, but I just recently bought the D800e, so it may even out.

I dont have the money to change to mirrorless. Ideally I would love a D850, but since retirement I really cant justify the price of one of those. So I settled on a D800. Used price is very keen. Not got one yet, but I have seen one with an incredibly low shutter count, and a great price.

A really affordable landscape kit could be a D800 and a few pre-owned wide-angle Nikkor lenses. I was using my 24mm f2.8 ai-s lens on my D700. I get really good images with this set up. I take pictures of the sunrise on the beach(Florida) Later on I bought a used AF 20mm f2.8D. These optics are really good. Shoot with these lenses at f8 and use a tripod and expect outstanding results. I think the next step for me is a D800...(i'm keeping my D700 forever though)

Okay cards on the table, I’m a Nikon fan. I have 5 Nikons, a FA and FM2n from the film era, a D810 I picked up in 2022 nicely priced, a D5 I got this year 2023 which has hardly been run in only 1500 shots taken and without a mark on it this was a bargain for what I paid, I also have a Z7 which I have had from new and it’s a great little camera. Why Nikon, well I can use a lens built in the 1970’s on every single camera so for me it’s about buying into a system that will last a lifetime. Over the years I have owned, Pentax, Canon (film and digital), Olympus, Bronica, Fuji, and Minolta, with the exception of the Minolta all have been excellent. For me it’s just about getting out and taking pictures, my images will probably never win any prestigious competitions but they have been in newspapers and magazines which I am proud of.
It doesn’t matter what you own just get out there and enjoy using these marvels to capture those fleeting moments in time. You don’t need the latest and greatest to take wonderful images, a good camera from yesterday took great pictures then as it will today and will continue to do tomorrow.

Thank you Martin, I just got faced with this issue this very week. All my photographer friends have Canon gear, and sadly I do not know anyone who had Nikon. :( Myself, always had Canon...
This week on Flickr I ran into shots made by D810 with the Tamron 35mm SP F1.4 lens. They are absolutely fantastic, the "color science", how the pictures look - despite high resolution still relaxed and not fake sharp. It reminded me of the continuation of the 5D classic -> 6D line, as if it was the next step in that evolutionary line - towards higher resolution but maintaining the same look. I know, I remember you said Flickr is full of bad photos... (I know, I posted many bad photos myslef there!! :_) ... yet, I found it useful to find examples taken by different cameras / lenses.
Now I find myself dreaming about that Tamron / Nikon combo. With other Nikon lenses the colors are not in Canon's league, but combo! It is absolutely fabulous. And I have always loved the way Nikons work so well for B&W. Your videos were the ones that steered e back to looking at DSLRs, and not focus solely on the new mirrorless. DSLRs are such treasures, and I find them to have so much more human portrayal of the world....

Interesting discussion about professional photographers vs. non-pro TH-camrs. My experience is that too many professional photographers on TH-cam simply don’t have likable personalities. They tend to come across as snobby, condescending, cynical and all-knowing people. One gets the impression a lot of pro photographers don’t really like photography all that much. I find that sad. I would never pair a Nikkor 24-120mm with a Nikon D800 to shoot landscapes. As you said, it's not a particularly sharp lens and the Nikon D800 is very picky when it comes to optics. In my opinion, fixed lenses are much more efficient, even if they are awkward to carry and mount every time. If you have the desire and the time, in my videos you will be able to see shots taken only with fixed lenses. For everything else I fully agree with you. Good boy. • @josgeusens4637
    @josgeusens4637 ปีที่แล้ว

Glad at least one real photographer sees a camera as a tool to get a certain result. That is what it is.
I am not a professional photographer, but I'm dedicated and passionate about photography for decades.
The brands of camera bodies I use? Olympus (OM, OM-D and MFT), Canon (5D "mark1"), Nikon...
Why? Because every camera body has different properties that serves different goals.
    It's obvious, isn't it?
Indeed the Nikon D600 was my choice for high ISO photos and high dynamic range, but - as you mentioned - it also serves very well for landscapes because of the sensor performance. That was a big plus when I went up hill to take a multi-shot panorama without the aid of a tripod. I was not planning on doing landscapes that day, but it was the occasion that took me there at the moment. If I had to stack these for HDR also, that would definitely have gone wrong. In stead I now have a panorama that's 6 ft wide with amazing resolution and dynamic range.
Up until now, no camera of the 600-series delivers such sensor output for that price and that's the main reason it is used so much. Although I have considered buying the 800, the resulting file size would also require 50% more storage and processing time while for me 24 mp is the ultimate joy to use in most circumstances. I guess Nikon realizes that too, looking at their range of bodies in that resolution.
That said, I might add that the software also makes a big difference and their use is comparable to the bodies we use. Some are really optimized for high ISO and when I was shooting jet fighters in very heavy rain, I had to choose ISO3200 which turned out to be no problem for printing out 3 ft wide after using PhotoLab with it's incomparable noise reduction features.
However, I've recently acquired the D750 with practically similar performance and price range than the D600, but it is a level up in usefulness.
The Canon 5D is a jewel for my legacy lenses from the 70's because of its flange distance. It's kind of slow but compared to the cameras the lenses were used on, it's definitely a good choice.
The micro FT OM-D has great sensor performance, but very high photo site density and therefor a high resolution. Putting my 600 mm on it, gives me unmatched details of moon and sun and obviously other far away objects as well.
I don't care for AF performance through the use of converters because for shooting fast action, I would never consider using any converter.
Photography should always be nurturing the inner artist and I agree that using (very) expensive gear will not benefit to that. Using cameras that I can afford within one month's pay, gives me so much more joy in photography. I'm not stingy to pay more for a decent camera, but we all have to ask ourselves what gear serves our destination and the newest will seldom be better for my purposes. I'll leave that to g.a.s., I suppose.
Cheers, Martin and thanks for the great video.

I love my D610 but was thinking I might need a few more pixels to make bigger prints. Going to take a 16-35, a 24-70 and a 70-300. (As advised by the tour)

Lens choice is good. I’d say only get the d810 if you can definitely afford it and want it. It is a better camera for landscape overall. You would benefit from the exposure preview in live view too.

@@MartinCastein hey! Thanks for the reply! I’m worried about not having a back up body…I’m away 10 days and will be bouncing around in a truck I guess! I have the xt-1 and a bunch of lenses but felt I needed the full frame for landscape…never really done landscape before…can find a D810 for around £500..

My Nikon fullframe dslr's can be a bit too large and too heavy when I do street photography. Therefore I added the Fuji system, the package like the xt3 and a 23mm prime is really more manageable . And it is pleasant that I can switch between both systems.

Makes sense, the improvements in the latest cameras for landscape photography are marginal at best. Any reason in particular for going for the D800 over an APS-C like the D7200, would it be more the build quality, MP, or something else?

    • @jimdabomb
      @jimdabomb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

For landscapes you want the best resolution, dynamic range, and iso performance which you’re going to get with a full frame over an aps-c but the main reason for most would be wide angle lenses

Hi Martin. I'm thinking of selling all my Canon gear to upgrade to a Nikon D800 or D810.
I'm mainly do astrophotography and landscapes. Would the 36MP sensor be to much for astro, as I've heard high megaPixel cameras don't allow as much light in the photon wells of the sensor?
Brilliant real talk content by the way 💯

  • @johnnathan2149

Martin I have one question that is relevant on this video! I've seen you have videos on D800 and on D810... and I know that the D810 is considered like a refined version of D800, but I don't know, because from what I've seen from photos (espesially on sunsets) I think I like more the colours of the D800. Ofcourse that may depends also to the photographer (his eye, his aesthetic, his skills, and to what kind of edit did he done to his files). What is your reallistic opinion, from your experience, on both of these models?
And again, I am sorry, maybe the hole question is false... Because I have this Wonderfull camera D700 that you mentioned me and it's brilliant!!! But in some occasions that I want to photograph I night sky full of stars in a landscape type of photography or the Iris of the eye (I've bought a macro lens for that), there and only there, I see that I need more detail for that... So... Is D800 really good for that? Or should I go for a D610 perhaps (!)... (I really love the rendering of D600 and I think it could be perfect brother for the D700, but is D610 capable enouph for these types of photography)? D3s? D750? You know... They are all at the same price right now when you look for used bodies... so what camera body should you suggest for me when the extra detail matters? Plzzz save me!!!

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I prefer the d800 to the d810 for colour like you say, I think you should get the d800 overall as the d610 is probably a bit basic in some ways although I really like it but you will be safe with the d800

@@MartinCastein Yes! I think that too! But the rendering of the colours is way better on D600/D610... I can see that on any photo... not just from your photos, but if someone checks on sites like the Explorecams, where people uploads images from all Nikon, Canon, ect. cameras in the world, then the rendering tells the truth about the mighty D600/610!!! I've compaired hundreds of photos from these two cameras and it is something like 65-70% real good photos on D610 and only 30-35% on D800. I think I don't like very much the rendering from D800 when it comes to skin tones... I don't understand why, but the result is so clinical that, you feel that, it's never gonna give you an artistic look like D700 or D610.
And also in a forest photography, where there is much information to capture, when I see images they are never very pleasing, they should be, but they are nor... it feels like it is not a solid image, but maybe something like little tiny dots have build and image in a way that the image looks frustrated and you are really trying to see what is there... I don't know, am I right?? Have you seen/notised these stuff too??
And, in the end, is there any Camera that can much the Rendering of the colours(!) with good dynamic range, and a resonable detail (maybe I think 24mp)?? Or there is no choise that can much these stuff?
I really don't know who else to ask about these stuff Martin... Thank you for all your help!!

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@johnnathan2149 I have noticed this stuff haha this is why I used the d600 for my wedding photography career. I have a video about it on my channel somewhere. The 24mp is more than enough the only thing you have to keep in mind is that the screen at the back has no exposure preview in live view so you just get an auto exposure. It never bothered me really. I have a video also called something like Don’t miss out on this Nikon camera. That’s about the d600 as well.

@@MartinCastein So if we want a camera that can much together a good rendering, and also a more detailed image (than d700), and also have some more dynamic range, and low light capabilities....... then the answer is D600, yes??
I' seen also D750... but I feel that (D750) suffers at reds and greens? Or it is in my imagination? Maybe it hasn't a so colourfull palette or maybe just cannot render so well as D610... I don't know......
But from D610 I've seen really beautiful skies full of stars and also beautiful rendering, even beautiful photos from macro photograpfy that I believe with the right lenses I can capture even the details from the Iris (eyes) that I want!
It seems that D600/610 is a camera for everything...!! That is my feeling...

I ordered a D800 Friday, for $500 I couldn’t pass it up. I’m a Canon guy. I had a D600 for a weekend but didn’t like it. The only Nikons I own are a D1, a D90, and a Fuji S5 Pro which is pretty much a D200. The only lenses I have so far are the 35mm 1.8 DX, 17-55 2.8 DX, and 70-200 2.8G IF ED VR yada yada. I’ll probably pick up the 24-70 2.8 non VR soon. I also ordered a D500 so I should be playing with the D800 and D500 before the week is up.

Hi Martin I'm really enjoying your videos your no nonsense approach, practical working knowledge and really good delivery is a great mix. I would appreciate your view on gear. I am a rejuvenated hobbiest old guy! I have the D300 and D700 which I have lenses I can mix and match. Nifty fifties for Dx and Fx. Tokina DX 12- 28 f4. And a Tamron 35-150 f2.8 -4. I am really happy with lenses. I was put off your 24-120 by indifferent reviews and soft at 120. The Tamron is great. Living In Cumbria I shoot landscape but to be honest ultimate resolution is not my mantra. BUT I am yearning to try and buy a D800 or 810. Would my lenses get an appreciable upgrade or downgrade in performance with the higher resolution. To be honest I am happy with best quality Jpegs and I would play with cropping fx, dx and crop modes to reduce Raw file sizes. Any pragmatic advice would be much appreciated. Interestingly you didn't opt for the quiet and the
less clunky vibrational shutter of the D 810. Cheers
