Quite the video! I really admire your sense of adventure. My hunch is very few US anglers ever would have dreamt there were trout in the Azores. Their origin story seems to hold a mystery or two. One scientific abstract I located online cites a local researcher who maintains they were introduced “nearly a century ago.” By whom? Not stated. There’s also a very interesting and intriguing thread on Twitter in which a person recounts how her father, a hatchery manager, was directed from someone on high to get a truckload (yes) of trout ready to airship on an Air Force C-130 bound for a U.S. air base in the Azores. I find this account quite believable. Why? I used to carpool in the Washington D.C. area way back in my working days with a senior official with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He used to regale fellow riders with colorful episodes from his long career - including one when he was a fisheries manager in the agency’s southeast region, in Atlanta, when the request came in “from Washington” to come up with a load of trout for the Azores. I gathered he was tapped as project officer to be sure the goods got delivered alive and on time. When? My best guess is that he was talking about the late 1960’s or early 1970’s (I carpooled with him in the late ‘70’s). The clincher for me in the Twitter thread? The poster referred to: “… cigar-smoking Fed guy.”
That was my friend, alright! He was almost never without his signature cigar! Hardly definitive proof, I grant you. But the backstory/mystery of rainbows in the Azores is indeed intriguing. By the way, and this could be Urban Legend, he also recounted a second-hand tale he heard in the Fish & Wildlife Service about a small load of rainbows shipped out to the Highlands of Vietnam in the mid to late 1960’s … but I’m most certainly not suggesting you venture there in quest of them!

Wow first of all this is amazing. Thank you so much for this comment. And I 100% believe that this could be accurate. Last year we went and fished for trout in Costa Rica and it was a similar situation. When the Army was helping to build the Panama canal some servicemen went into the mountains of Panama and Costa Rica and stocked some trout. So I don't doubt at all that this is how they arrived in the Azores. What is also wild is that as far as we know only 2 of the 9 islands have trout. Leading me to believe that if it were a Portuguese sponsored activity they would have stocked more. Its also wild how little information there is on the trout fishing in the Azores... Would love to track down these old fish and game managers and find out where else they have record of stocking. Kind of sounds like a Jason Bourne style trout situation.
Second of all, sounds like we need to head to the Vietnamese highlands!

Wondering if you can tell me some places on the map near these rivers/spots. I've been going to Sao Miguel every few summers because my family is from there but they decides to move to Canada around the 60-70s and I'm now thinking of trying fresh water fishing when I go this summer.
