      Your video proves that Giannis will not domitate in anyway possible without good coaching
      and a well coordinated team.
      What kind of question was that?
      Wouldn't it be sad to see him struggle once again like he did in the last playoffs vs the Celtics
      trying to carry one more team into another turnament?
      I don't want to see it.
      2019's coaching was a disaster and a shame.

      @@NikosReegas the thing is that giannis is not the same player as he was in 2019 and I’m not saying this as a dick rider but as a fact he’s if you compare he’s play style before and now giannis plays way more off ball which makes it way harder too build a wall and Giannis with the ball has gotten way better at everything. In 2019 giannis wasn’t a good passer he just had a high usage rate now Giannis is an incredible passer. I don’t think he’ll dominate like in the nba but saying he will play at the same level is pure delusion

    For the international basketball dummy. Three years ago Greece was coached by someone who didn't have experience at this level. Now Greece has one of the best coaches in Europe. And an assistant coach of the Bucks. So I don't see how Giannis will not be better. But Europe has some super teams. So it's hard to medal.

    Giannis played well in the last Fiba tournament. He was by far our best player. Our coach was horrible with not even European experience, really bad team selection, tactics and motivation of players. We played great defence on USA but shot horribly. The players were not well prepared mentally.

      I wouldn't say he played that well. He was good..But you would kinda expect more from him. He was much more inpatient than now, wanted to do too much alone (do we pinch this on him or lack of instructions from the coaching staff?) and etc.

      @@AugustasSuliauskas you don't think he was best player on greece team? For me he was by far our best player and the only player who played close to their normal level. If you look at stats and "eye test" every player on the roster played a lot worse for greece in fiba world cup and previous euribasket than for their clubs. Much lower fg % especially from 3 and FTS. The main reason for this is awful coaching of high school greek level. Shouting at players all the time nervous, passing this on to our team who therefore was not mentally prepared for the game. Giannis was 3rd option on offense playing most minutes at the 4 or 5 getting little touches in slow half court offense. So he was basically put as defensive player and really not utilised offensively at all. I think he did well considering the awful coaching and he was by far our best player and the only one who (for me) did not have a disappointing tournament. It's difficult for him because he is NBA style player and fiba is more finesse game

    2022 Giannis is evolved from 2019 Giannis. Even some of the clips showing his turnovers he's a much improved passer as far as timing and accuracy in comparison with his first MVP season. He also handles the balls less, plays off-ball more including as the screener in the high-screen game. He's also become a better post-up player and is a great passer out of the double team.
    That and Itoudis is a legit excellent coach and I am sure will stagger minutes as best as possible to get the best spacing lineup for him.
    That being said, Greece will compete mostly because of their defensive tenacity.

    Fisrt of all great analysis. You really saw the whole picture. Regarding my national team I am optimistic about the results in the upcoming eurobasket for some reasons.
    1) Giannis himself has improved a lot since the World Cup. Teams in the NBA had figured how to stop him in the playoffs as well as we all remember. Giannis suffered in the playoffs of 2019 and 2020 having to face the "wall" defense. However that was not the case in the next two postseasons when he really dominated. Even this year against the incredibly tough defense of the Celtics and without the help of Khris, Giannis was still too much to handle and forced a game 7 practically on his own, as the rest of the Bucks team didn't perform well overall.
    2) Second this time Greece has a regular coach and not just a good one, but a top class one and that can totally flip the script for us. As you said in the video it was evident the lack of ideas in our game, despite the fact that Greece had two of the best playmakers in Europe in the likes of Sloukas and Calathes. In the coaching staff of Greece excpet a member of the Bucks, there is also a member of the Bartzokas' staff, so I am expecting to see a lot of off ball movement and cuts that will help utilize Giannis and exploit the mismatches that he will create.
    3) Last but not least we have a player in our roster that I believe we really missed in previous tournaments. That of course is Tyler Dorsey that will probably compete this year with the National Team. His perimeter shot and of course the ability he has in 1 on 1 situations are two elements that are much needed with Giannis on court. He really can be a pain in the ass for the opposing defense, when Giannis will be on court with him (so the defense will have to primarily focus on him) and subsequntly Tyler will have extra room to perform.
    Of course all these are in theory so we will have to wait a little more to see him and the rest of the team in action.

    The BIGGEST upgrade that the Greek NT got this year was getting Itoudis as the coach. I expect the offense to look completely different with Itoudis brilliant offensive sets.

    @ejcash7234 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Reasons are: 1) The NT coach was very inexperienced and did not have a game plan; 2) The opposing teams studied Giannis well and adopted a zone defense scheme as they new Greece would rely on Giannis to dunk or hit rim shots; 3) The NT coach had trouble implementing the pick-n-roll to break the zone defense; 4) The point guards and small forwards had a hard time sinking 3's on the zone defense; 5) The selection of players for the NT was not the best, some players just were not engaged in the WC2019 Tournament, others we're coming to the end of their careers and no longer cared, others were slightly injured, others were a little too young, etc. 6) The Greek players had no respect for their coach; 7) Many bad calls from the refs on Giannis calling too often offensive fouls; and 8) Lack of motivation to win, the Greek Basketball Association was going through in-fighting, which caused discourse amongst players from rival Greek teams. I'm sure there are many other reasons but those were the ones I observed...As many have pointed out, Itoudis, has a better IQ and knows that the other teams will be pushing a zone defense on Giannis but watching the games against Great Britain and against Turkey, Greece has better 3 -point shooters like Dorsey, Agravanis, Moraitis and of course Sloukas and to some extent Papapetrou and Calathes. Will see...

    @SiempreMatias 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Great points Augustas. Some thoughts.
    First off, setting the foundation: Giannis is a DPOY and a 4x All-Defense. In order to succeed, Greece needs - and has all the tools - to be by far the best defensive team on the tournament. We have a top-3 defensive big man and the best shot blocker in this year’s Euroleague in Papagiannis. One of the best defensive guards in EL history, in Calathes. Papanikolaou had a huge defensive season as well, returning to his standards after struggling with injury the previous season. Thanasis and Kostas Antetokounmpo are defense - first guys, Kalaitzakis, Papapetrou, Larentzakis can also guard. We pretty much have no holes in this area (like our aging legends Bourousis and Printezis, in 2019). Put Giannis in this mix and you might have a defensive juggernaut who can provoke TOs and create transition chances.
    Even if we try our best, we cannot space the floor. Only Sloukas and Dorsey are above average shooters (42% and 38% in EL this year), so let’s not be too optimistic about that front. Right now, Giannis might be our 3rd best reliable shooter. But, in 5 on 5 as you said is all about creativity. Giannis and Papagiannis as the roll men (btw I’m not a fan of putting Giannis at the 5), post ups, DHOs, decoy plays from the others. Hell, we have Itoudis now, I can sleep peacefully at night knowing how he conduct things.
    As for the medals, it’s too early. And competition wise, this Eurobasket is far more challenging than the 2019 WC. Slovenia will be there, Italy are a whole different animal, Serbia will have the 2 MVPs and an immense pressure to win, France is a force, Lietuva will be a much better team because Domas and Jonas are much better than 2019, Germany is full of talent, Czechs are great, and the list is endless. Maybe Spain with no Rubio has a slight disadvantage but, you know, who can bet against those guys?
    We are probably looking into the best Eurobasket ever. Greetings from Athens!

      Glad you liked it and thank you for putting time into writing this comment! Can't wait for the EuroBasket myself. Couple points in response: I like and dislike Giannis at the 5: I think he is a great roller and with him, it would be a killer defensive lineup there. BUT.. at the same time, other teams would be putting him in every PnR possible, trying to make him tired, possibly lowering his FG% in the later stages of the game. And I love him more as a free-roaming rim protector on defense. Also, I agree you guys don't have many shooters in the roster. But a lineup for Sloukas, Dorsey, Papapetrou/Papanikolaou, Giannis, Papaggianis does not look that bad for me. Greece obviously have to base their game from the defense, they just can't expect to outscore opponents. I'm not saying medals will be easy, but they are definitely more likely than 2019. Even with other great teams being so stacked this year.

Papagiannis is pretty good in shootng from midrange and Sloukas, Dorsey, Papanikopalou and even Papapetrou or Larentzakis can stretch the floor. I'm still not sure about how well Calathes and Giannis can fit in the same line-up, you're practically begging the opponents to just pack the paint. National teams is a totally different cup of tea. It has players that gather up from all over the world, some of them do not even participate in the pre-Euro events but they become available right before the official tournament. Besides that, coach starts with a pretty big number of players, excluding one by one until he has the final 12 of them. There is not a lot of time nor the conditions allow for the team to work on their tactics, to see what works and what not.

    Hello to BasketNews. Two weeks ago I gave you my op on why Giannis did not performed as the Superbasketball star that he is in MundoBasket 2019. After watching Greece play Spain, Poland, Georgia and Turkey in friendlies. I believe that my reasons were proven as legit and I have seen the NT improve like I haven't seen it since 2005. Here are some of my new observation: 1) Greece now has a NT coach who does have a game plan; 2) The NT coach knows fully well that the opposing teams will be boxing Giannis on a zone defense but now the rest of the team is working hard on pick-n-rolls as well as 3 pointers; 3) For the first time since 2006 I see the Greek NT having a hunger to win, players who steel, kamikaze themselves to get a lose ball, benchwarmers with passion and a vigor to win; 4) Players like Kaselakis who at 32 shows more passion than the Bourousis back in 2019. He comes off the bench, plays hard defense and shoots 3s without hesitation; 5) The addition of Dorsey has given the NT a speedy 3 pts shooter since the youthful days of Spanoulis, something Greece did not have in 2019; 6) The climate in the Hellenic Basketball Association is exponentially better than it was when the old farts were presiding over it; 7) All the players respect the Greek NT coach and listen to him, something that did not happen in 2019, which is building team spirit and helps players being more comfortable with the way the play and how the shoot. I like what I see and Giannis will be used to bail the team out should there be low moments in a game. We will see.

    Biggest reason is that Greece does not have any good shooting guards that can punish the opponent from the 3-point line.
    These means that opposing teams can do a zone defense and put their players in the paint, without worrying that someone will score a 3-pointer.
    Giannis is always facing 2-3 people when he gets near the basket. No isolation whatsoever.

    I definitely think there are ways so that Giannis can be "utilized" the best way possible. However, I think that getting Giannis to be a screen player for pick n' roll situations is not gonna be one of them because when the guards will have the ball outside the 3 point line, the guy playing defense on them will probably give them space so that he can crowd the "driving" spaces of the court... (I might be wrong though)

    He did underperform in 2019, but this was not solely his fault imo. Coach Itoudis seems determined to get the most out of this generation of players (he could also be a coach to visit NBA, he's young, already achieved a lot here)
    Some general comments to take into account as well.
    I think that time Giannis has put more thought (and sweat) to adjust some parts of his style to FIBA rules and his teammates since this generation has some very talented players. Huge difference can be seen already from the first friendly game against Spain.
    Also keep in mind that this time he will play alongside Thanasis and Kostas which is definitely a huge mental boost.
