  • This is my first ever video and something I have been considering for a while.
I'd discussed with my local Triumph dealer the possibility of them just doing the valve clearance check but understanding the resource requirement and associated dealer costs of the task prompted me to undertake the task myself.
I have quite a good understanding of mechanical and engineering related work and a well equipped home workshop. So far I've needed it all!!
Part 1 explains the process of getting access to the cam cover to enable me to check valve clearances on my 1600 thunderbird.Description

I just want to thank you for this series of videos you made even though it's a bit late, but you've helped me a lot to check my T-Bird before sending it to the dealer because of a clicking sound inside the engine which turned out to be a faulty exhaust decompression cam. At least I checked everything I could because of your videos and they couldn't charge me for anything extra.

Thanks for this. Thinking about buying one and wanted to see how involved the clearance check is on this model.

I was doing my spark plug change and was having difficulty getting the far left spark plug out. I did in the end using the right adapter but it got me looking at the engine and i noticed that it wasn't in the centre of the frame. I began to panic thinking the previous owner might have dropped it and bent the frame but thanks your video i can see at 4.52 that yours is the same. the whole engine is slightly more overhanging on the right than on the left- hence it is slightly harder to get the far left spark plug out, but can be done. Once again your video's have helped

I’m starting to think that I made a mistake by purchasing the thunderbird… don’t get me wrong, it rides very nicely but getting parts here in South Africa and services is a nightmare. Thinking of trading it for a Suzuki M109

I sold the Thunderbird in 2017. It got me into the cruiser scene but I moved over to Harley and have never regretted it. Doing anything on the Thunderbird was always awkward bordering on the difficult.
Hope you find what you're looking for!.
      Regards PB

Do you turn the fuel off before removing the fuel line? If so where is the fuel tap?

Hi, the fuel system is pressurised once the ignition is turned on and connection to the bottom of the tank is quick release which seals automatically once removed. (There is no fuel tap) If I remember correctly, pick the back end of the fuel tank up and the connector runs parallel to the bottom of the tank. I can't truly remember if there is a return line from the injector system but if there is there will be two connections to the tank somewhere. It's at least five years since I did this and I haven't owned the Thunderbird for three!
NOTE: Do Not try this whilst the ignition is switched on and leave it for at least 30 minutes after turning the ignition off. Pull the fuel pump fuse out before attempting to remove the fuel tank.
You may still get a small amount of fuel spillage when releasing the connector so make sure you have a rag suitably placed to catch it.
      Thanks for watching PB.
